SMITHFIELD – Three students will share the top of the class this year with two co-valedictorians, Maximilian Chelminski and Cameron Kasbarian, and a salutatorian, Victoria Richard, as Smithfield High School transitions out of its traditional class ranking system.
SHS Principal Dan Kelley said the year was already challenging enough, and students kept the competition tight for top rankings. He said he was proud of the school’s top three, who persevered among a class of 165 students. ....

Youth forum will focus on unity mural


SMITHFIELD – A second community meeting on racism will focus on the perspectives of youth and their experiences with racism and bullying in Smithfield, opening up a broader conversation about coming together and moving forward as a community after the discovery of racist graffiti graffiti two months ago.
Led by the Smithfield Youth Council, the forum is scheduled for Wednesday, March 10. Youth say they plan to further discuss plans for paintings to replace the graffiti.
Town Council President Suzy Alba met with the Youth Council following the discovery of racist comments on the pilings of the Route 116 overpass on the Scenic Stillwater Trail. She said the forum will focus on unity and tolerance around issues of race and equity and the youth response to the issues. ....

Smithfield schedules forums on race and equality


SMITHFIELD – Responding to racist and hateful graffiti found under the Route 116 overpass on the Scenic Stillwater Trails, Smithfield is hosting a virtual public forum to create a dialogue and positive change in the community.
On Wednesday, Feb. 17, at 6 p.m., the public is invited to attend a virtual forum, titled “Race and Equality in Smithfield.”
The forum will be moderated by the Rhode Island Commission on Prejudice and Bias and will provide the opportunity for the Smithfield community to speak freely and respectfully about the incident and related issues, said Town Council President Suzy Alba.
Leaders of the YMCA of Greater Providence, YMCA Rhode Island and the Anti-Defamation League of New England will attend as well to offer expertise and insight on how those affected, and the town, can move forward. ....
