Change of command for top coastal advocacy group

Change of command for top coastal advocacy group
The Island Institute in Rockland has been a voice for coastal towns and islands for nearly 40 years.
Author: Don Carrigan

ROCKLAND, Maine — 18 years ago, Rob Snyder began work with the Island Institute, helping the group become a leader in the statewide effort to protect working waterfront.
Since then, Maine voters have supported millions of dollars for working waterfront, but the issue remains a focus for the Institute, one of many it has embraced over the years to help sustain island and coastal communities.
“And when you dig into what that means,” Snyder said,” we support the leadership on this coast, helping make sure they’re informed, networked, and supported so they can solve real-world problems they face in a practical way. And that can take the form of project work like renewable energy and broadband networks, working waterfront in communities or helping strengthen the most remote schools ion the coast.”

Maine Voices: Legislature should take steps to keep solar development green

Maine Voices: Legislature should take steps to keep solar development green
Lawmakers have the chance to guide the location of projects to minimize impacts on land that provides other important benefits.

Staff Writer Tux Turkel’s Jan. 4 article describing Maine’s current solar development “land rush” is spot on. This new wave presents a host of benefits for Maine people – lower electricity rates, gainful employment opportunities and, of course, reduced carbon emissions – but also an inherent conflict: Renewable-energy development takes up a lot of valuable space, space that is also needed to meet other climate goals such as growing food, providing connected wildlife habitat and conserving carbon-absorbing forests and farmland.

Some new proposals for environmental legislation in Maine are aimed at specific goals, such as speeding up weatherization efforts in Maine homes, or expanding solar energy use and evolving battery technology to store the power at night. Others are broader, such as conserving more land to sequester carbon dioxide, or asking Maine residents to bond $50 million to help communities adapt to a rising sea level.

Rep. Chellie Pingree has been elected the new chair of the House appropriations subcommittee that holds the purse strings for a wide swath of federal environmental, land use, arts, and tribal affairs agencies and programs.
The position confers substantial power and influence to the Democrat, who has represented Maine’s 1st District for the past 12 years, especially as her party now controls the executive branch and both chambers of Congress. The Appropriations Committee chairwoman, Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn., announced Pingree’s appointment late Monday afternoon.

MEREDA annual forecast conference looks different, but focus is the same

The 2021 Annual MEREDA Forecast Conference & Member Showcase took on a different look this year, but with the same focus on its goals its had for the past 17 years, organizers said.
The conference, which usually attracts more than 1,000 real estate and development professionals from across Maine, took to the internet Thursday, and while no final registration numbers were immediately available, with a week to go, 500 had registered.
MEREDA Board President Josh Fifield acknowledged that no one would have to "trudge through the snow" to the Holiday Inn by the Bay in Portland to get to the conference. "This year is different," he said. "No trudging and, unfortunately, no being together in the room."

Maine's response to the climate crisis with Hannah Pingree

Thu, 12/31/2020 - 8:00am
The impending climate crisis is real. Maine is especially vulnerable. The waters in the Gulf of Maine are warming faster than pretty much anywhere else on earth. Many of our coastal communities are vulnerable to flooding from rising sea levels. Our forests will suffer. Maine’s Office of Policy Innovation and Future (OPIF) has recently released a detailed Four Year Plan for Climate Action. As we begin the New Year and look to the future, “Maine Challenge” will explore with Hannah Pingree, the head of OPIF, the urgent call to action embodied in this plan which has far-reaching implications for all of us in Maine, rich and poor, old and young, alike.
