Briefing the local media this week, Bank of Namibia Governor Mr Johannes !Gawaxab said full economic recovery would be hinged on vaccinations, investments and financial sector stability.
“In terms of the country’s economic challenges, which were exacerbated by the COVID-19 epidemic, Namibians, along with the rest of the world, have been through unprecedented and tough circumstances since the pandemic’s outbreak.
“As a result, Namibia’s GDP shrank by eight percent in 2021, eliminating jobs and hobbling businesses while also putting pressure on the government debt. The country cannot afford another hard lockdown since it would jeopardise more jobs and businesses,” he said. ....

Namibia held its 2021 first quarterly performance review in Katima Mulilo, Zambezi Region from 26-28 April 2021. The main objectives of the review were to assess the progress made, opportunities that exist, and challenges experienced, as well as lessons learnt during the implementation of the first quarter of 2021 Country Strategic Plan (CSP). The review was attended by WFP staff, external stakeholders, including the UN agencies such as FAO and UNFPA Country Representatives as well as senior government officials from the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM), the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture (MoEAC), and the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Land Reforms (MAWLR). The proposed marine phosphate mining off the Namibian coast will have a minute impact on the seafloor bed and there is no reason the fishing sector and the mining sector cannot coexist. 
In addition, the area where phosphate deposits occur does not coincide with any key commercial fishing in the area and the proposed seabed mining does not pose a threat to endangered or unique biodiversity in the area. 
These sentiments were recently expressed by Chris Brown, CEO of the Namibian Chamber of Environment. 
In a recorded interview, posted on the website of the Chamber of Mines of Namibia, Brown explained that the proposed phosphate mining area to be dredged per year is about three square kilometres, which he stated is equivalent to 0.00003% of Namibia’s seabed in the country’s exclusive economic zone.  ....
