Throughout much of the 19th century, most laundry was done by hand in a laborious process that often stretched over three days. Some cities offered commercial laundries, but the work was still done by hand, often by Chinese immigrants who toiled long working days for minimal wages. The invention of the steam laundry began to change all that.
Steam laundries did not clean with steam. Rather, they made use of a boiler and a steam engine to power the machinery. The boiler also created hot water for the laundry and steam for a commercial press that eliminated the need to use hand irons heated on a stove, which could scorch clothing. ....

MAD BMX gears up for big year of events and competitions

The Mackay and District BMX club is gearing up for a big 2021 as governing body changes come in to effect and member numbers climb.
Publicity officer Michelle Tickle said the club, which now came under the Aus Cycle banner, would kick off with a come and try day next month that would give prospective riders a taste for everything on offer.
While a date and location was yet to be locked in, Mrs Tickle said the day was open to riders from two years to anyone still able to ride.
The new year is shaping up to have riders back on track with regular scheduled events and riders vying for gold at state and national titles after a disrupted 2020 because of COVID-19. ....

Man's rescue after car crashes in river near Pen-y-Fan

A MAN jumped into a river to rescue two people whose car came off the road near Pen-y-Fan last week.
Harry Blackburn, 22, had gone walking with friends at the national park, but on returning to the Pont Cwm y Fedwen car park, came across the accident.
“We got back to the car park and as we got to the car, my two friends had run down to this bridge around 200-300 yards away,” he said.
“They said they heard a screech and a bang. I didn’t hear that, but I heard them screaming so I ran down after them. ....

Newport man helps after car crashes in river near Pen-y-Fan

“It was pitch black, but we could see the car had flipped in the river. My other friends had run down, and I heard them saying they couldn’t see anyone moving in the car.
“I just thought I needed to get down there as nobody’s going to get here on time.
“I managed to find a way down the right-hand side of the bridge and got my torch out. I didn’t know what I was getting into. All I knew was it was filling with water and I needed to get them out.
“I’ll never forger the driver’s face as I helped him out – his eyes were wide and, as I got him out, he looked up and took a massive gasp of air. I helped him to the shore and gave him my phone to shine a light on the car. ....
