The creation of J.P. Luby Surf Park on Padre Island really started with the creation of Bob Hall Pier.
When Bob Hall Pier opened in 1950, it was instantly popular with anglers and even locals just enjoying the scenery. But in the 60s, kids discovered the pier created a good break for the new surfing craze.
Good surfing spots are generally created when a rock or coral reef is just under the surface of the water. The Gulf of Mexico s sandy bottom is in constant motion, creating haphazard wave formations.
Sand will build up on the lee side (side away from the wind) of the pilings. The pier will hold the sand in place, creating a reef-like structure. The waves in turn will break more uniformly, giving the surfer a better ride, local surfer John Trice explained to a reporter in 1984. ....
