Tulsa Attorney Asks Harvard University To Return Native American Artifact

A historic tomahawk on display at Harvard University is now at the center of a conversation over who morally should own it.
The more than 150-year-old artifact once belonged to Ponca Chief and Native American Civil Rights Leader Standing Bear.
All I m doing is making a simple appeal to their morality, said Brett Chapman, a Tulsa attorney.
Bret Chapman is one of Standing Bear’s descendants and says the tomahawk should be returned to the Ponca Tribe.
Last month, Chapman wrote a letter to Harvard s Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, where it s now on display. ....

Native American lawyer calls on Harvard to return ancestral relic

On 29 April, the attorney sent a letter to Jane Pickering, the director of the museum where the tomahawk is displayed. In the letter, Chapman laid out challenges to Harvard’s moral right to possess the relic.
The repatriation demand comes in the wake of the Peabody Museum’s apology for the “pain” the museum caused by its refusal to return Native American objects amid accusations of violating the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act. Strengthening calls for museums, universities and cultural institutions to right historical wrongs are happening at a broader scale across the country.
“The only reason this tomahawk came into Harvard’s possession was because of the illegal, forced removal of Native Americans,” Chapman told the Guardian. “If it hadn’t happened, Standing Bear wouldn’t have needed a white lawyer, and wouldn’t have given the heirloom to him, who then wouldn’t have given it to Harvard. ....

An attorney who is a descendant of a Native American tribal chief and civil rights leader is calling on Harvard University to return an ancient relic currently on display at one of its museums.
Brett Chapman of Oklahoma, who is related to Chief Standing Bear of the Ponca Tribe, detailed in a recent Twitter thread that he sent an email late last month to Harvard’s Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology challenging the “moral right” to hold and display a tomahawk that once belonged to Standing Bear.
Chapman in his letter to the museum’s director, Jane Pickering, explained that the single-handed axe wrongfully ended up in Harvard’s possession after Standing Bear, one of the first Native Americans to sue and be granted civil rights under U.S. law, in 1879 gave the tomahawk as a gift of thanks to one of his lawyers, John Lee Webster. ....
