Minority students have been nominated to military service academies at disproportionately lower rates than their white counterparts for more than two decades, according to a study published Wednesday based on admissions data.
The report, published by the Connecticut Veterans Legal Center and the Veterans Legal Services Clinic at Yale Law School, found that over a period of nearly 25 years, members of Congress have awarded just 6 percent of their military academy nominations to Black students and 8 percent to Hispanic applicants. White students received 74 percent of all lawmaker nominations.
One portion of the study looked at nominations from 2009-2019 and found that 32 percent of nominations from House Democrats were for students of color, compared to 15 percent among House Republicans. ....

'We failed them:' New data shows Hispanic residents disproportionately impacted by COVID-19 in 2020

PENDLETON — New data released by the Umatilla County Public Health Department shows what was long understood but had yet to be disclosed — Hispanic residents have been disproportionately infected with COVID-19 in the county.
Residents reporting Hispanic ethnicity accounted for 41% of Umatilla County’s total COVID-19 cases in 2020, compared with 34% from non-Hispanic residents and 25% from residents whose ethnicity was unknown, according to a report released by the health department this week.
In addition, the county’s Hispanic population tested positive at a rate approximately three times higher than non-Hispanic residents in 2020, the data shows.
“We failed them,” said Jose Garcia, chair of the Hispanic Advisory Committee in Hermiston. “We failed some communities. Because for every death that happened in Umatilla County, there was a family involved.” ....

Teaching culture through coloring

The Tulare County folklorico group is part of the JEMA Foundation formed by Micaela and Raymond Macareno.
JEMA Foundation - the name stands for Juventud Enriqueciminento Musica y Artes , which is youth enrichment and music and arts, says Micaela Macareno, who works with the foundation.
Adds Raymond Macareno, also with the foundation:
Culture is very important, not just in the Hispanic community, but making sure that we do our part to display that culture and enrich our students. I love that we provide an option for our youth that it doesn t involve just being on a handheld device or a tablet, something that they can be outdoors, learning with other students that have that common interest. It s good for exercise as well. ....
