Hitchin's British Schools Museum reopening after lockdown

Museums in Hitchin reopen this week following the easing of COVID-19 lockdown restrictions.
The British Schools Museum fully reopens from tomorrow (Wednesday, May 19) and the Queen Street venue will hold its first craft fair of the year on Saturday, May 22.
Mark Copley, curator of the British Schools Museum, said: “We are so excited about opening up fully as we come out of lockdown.
It will be great to see familiar faces and as we approach the summer, we have a varied programme of activities to suit all tastes.” ....

North Herts Museum will finally reopen its doors on Tuesday, May 18, with museum staff working tirelessly throughout lockdown preparing for exhibitions

After being forced to close its doors since the third national lockdown, North Hertfordshire Museum will finally reopen on Tuesday, May 18.
The museum - on Brand Street, Hitchin - celebrates the culture, heritage and environment of North Herts, using museum collections to tell the stories of the people who have lived and worked in the district. 
Throughout lockdown, museum staff have been busy preparing for exhibitions ahead of the reopening.
Steve Crowley, North Hertfordshire District Council s service director, said: “We are very pleased we are able to reopen the museum again to the public and encourage everyone to come along and enjoy what it has to offer.” ....

Foxholes Care Home's history of Lucas & Devitt family's past


William moved to The Hall in nearby Welwyn in 1920, so Foxholes became the home of Philip Henry Devitt, of the shipping company Devitt & Moore. Three years later, and Sir Philip bought the old orchard and garden to the east of Foxholes.
In 1930, Sir Philip bought William Kitchener s garden in a move some predict was a way to protect Foxholes rural surroundings from Hitchin Urban District Council s plans for new roads and housing in the nearby Crow furlong.

Foxholes had a new owner in 1933, when it was sold to Hubert Moss, a provision merchant of Hitchin. But six years later, at the turn of the Second World War, the building was converted into a maternity ward where it stood until 1951. ....

The British Schools Museum, based in original Victorian and Edwardian school buildings on Queen Street, gives visitors an insight into what education used to be like. There s also a tearoom and shop.
