A New Mexico woman will spend 20 years in prison without parole, for pulling the trigger in a drug hit three years ago in Sitka.
In passing sentence, Superior Court Judge William Carey said the offense committed by Christina Quintana was the worst he had seen in a drug-related case, in his 40-year legal career.
In a negotiated agreement, the state dropped all charges against 35-year old Christina Quintana except one: Assault inflicting serious injury with a weapon. ....

A funnel cloud photographed over Palmer was an unusual weather phenomenon. But was it a tornado?

Print article
PALMER Robert Warren was almost home from the gym Thursday evening when he saw the long, thin funnel cloud extending from the clouds over Palmer just before 7.
The funnel dropped so low, it sent dirt swirling beneath it.
Alaska’s ample disaster menu includes earthquakes, volcanoes and killer cold. Tornadoes or weather that resembles them rarely make the list.
“I immediately pulled over so I could get pictures,” said Warren, a 47-year-old nurse practitioner who works at Hiland Mountain Correctional Center.
By the time he got out his iPhone, the funnel had already withdrawn back up toward the sky. ....

Tuscaloosa: Concerns over furthering the spread of COVID-19 have prompted officials with the Tuscaloosa Public Library system to again close its branches. The closures will remain through at least Jan. 5, said library spokesman Vince Bellofatto. All three locations of the Tuscaloosa Public Library are expected to reopen Jan. 6. “TPL made this choice to support the overall health and well-being of Tuscaloosa city, county and Northport and for the safety of our patrons and staff,” Bellofatto said. “It was a very hard decision, as TPL is dedicated to serving the patrons, but the best way to serve our community now, is to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.” Library officials will remain in contact with the library’s board of trustees and, if needed, additional measures might be taken. The library initially clo ....

(AP) - A women’s prison in Alaska that had just three confirmed coronavirus cases last week says it now has more than 100 cases.
The Hiland Mountain Correctional Center reported 109 active cases of the virus on Monday. The state Department of Corrections said the prison can house about 400 inmates.
Randy McLellan, a correctional officer at the women’s prison, said the prison has been on lockdown since the new cases were reported.
“To leave to have communal meals can’t happen, recreation or any programs they want to participate in or religious services all that stuff is affected, it’s all limited,” McLellan said. “They get no visitors. They’re essentially cut off from everything because of this outbreak. And it’s very unfortunate.” ....
