Led by Sunderland City Council, it aims to raise the region’s profile as a destination for day-trips and weekend breaks. “Sunderland has so much to offer as a place to visit and play, from some of the country’s best-kept beaches to a unique set of cultural assets such as The National Glass Centre and Washington Old Hall that have helped attract millions of people to the city over recent years,” said Cllr Graeme Miller, leader of Sunderland City Council.

Euro final: Sunderland landmarks lit as England dares to dream

LANDMARKS across Sunderland were once again lit red and white to cheer on England - and Sunderland lads Jordan Henderson and Jordan Pickford - ahead into the finals of the Euros. National Trust owned Penshaw Monument, Northern Spire bridge, Keel Square, Fulwell Mill, Hylton Castle, the white lighthouse at Seaburn and the Beacon of Light were lit in the England team s colours on Saturday night in the run up to the match on Sunday. The flag of St George is also flying above Sunderland Civic Centre this weekend. The leader of Sunderland City Council, Councillor Graeme Miller, said: Sunday is a huge national occasion and it s absolutely brilliant to have two of our homegrown heroes in the England squad. I know the whole city is going to be cheering them on in the final.
