Holmes Virologist Autumn Holmes, PhD, a postdoctoral researcher at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, has been named a Hanna H. Gray Fellow by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). The fellowship provides up to $1.4 million over eight years to outstanding early-career scientists. Its aim is to help those with the potential to solve major challenges in the life sciences make the transition to becoming principal investigators. Holmes’ research focuses on finding new therapies for emerging infectious diseases such as chikungunya. Transmitted by mosquito bite, chikungunya virus causes debilitating, often chronic arthritis in people. While chikungunya is still mostly confined to tropical parts of the planet, the mosquito species that carry the virus are likely to expand their range over the next few decades due to climate change. ....
Date Time Two Propel-owned funeral homes pay penalties for alleged misleading local ownership claims WT Howard Funeral Services and Coventry Funeral Homes, trading as Fitzgerald’s Funerals, have each paid $12,600 in penalties after the ACCC issued each of the businesses with an infringement notice for allegedly making a false and misleading representation about their ownership. This coincides with the release of an ACCC survey seeking further information about the experiences of consumers and businesses with the funeral services sector. WT Howard promoted on its website that it was “proudly local and independently owned” while Coventry represented that “Fitzgeralds Funerals in Townsville North Queensland is locally owned and operated”, when in fact both WT Howard and Fitzgerald’s Funerals are owned by a publicly listed company, Propel Funeral Partners. ....
Murray River Council The Moulamein community will see movement at the Howard Park playground this week as the site is prepared for some exciting new additions. The current playground will be demolished and removed, followed by excavation works to prepare the site for new equipment. The net swing will remain. During demolition, the surrounding park and facilities will remain open, but the playground area will be closed-off to access. Mayor Cr Chris Bilkey said the new equipment will be a great addition to the park space. “Howard Park is a key recreation space in the centre of town, so it’s really pleasing that we are set to give the site a decent refresh.” ....
Date Time Yorkshire and Humber Climate Commission gets to work An independent advisory group has been launched to support ambitious climate action in Yorkshire and the Humber. Yorkshire and Humber Climate Commission brings together a team of climate leaders from across public, private and third sectors in what is the largest regional commission of its kind in the UK. Professor Andy Gouldson, Executive Dean at the University Of Leeds’ Faculty of Environment, is director of the new commission and will oversee its work. Chaired by Liz Barber, CEO of Yorkshire Water, the commission aims to help the region reduce its carbon emissions as quickly as possible and ensure that people in Yorkshire are prepared to cope with the growing impacts of climate change, such as heatwaves, flooding and sea level rise. ....
