Donald trump and Kamala Harris a lot of signs it is barrelling forward, it is on and that is the trumpian way it has been publically debated. Yes, they debate the debates these days. But trump did post online he will debate harris. That reflects a further reiteration of what he expected. He claimed he will do and wants to do the debate but theres been squabbling over the details. But tonight we have public statements from both sides and the moderators, abc hosts, that this is still on in philadelphia september 10th. Trump was threatening to skip the debate and the Microphone System whether it was being held over or not. Reports that team trump wanted to stay with the muted microphones used in the biden debate but not the way it was done in past cycles. Harris wanted them open, and discussions are ongoing in those details. Kamala harris has not had as many events in the public spotlight which is understandable as we reported. They beat the rnc in terms of Television Ratings narrowly, they had a huge week they were on everyones mind this is the last slow summer week before labor day and the kickoff of the full campaign season. That doesnt mean theyre not planning things. Today Kamala Harris announced shell do her first formal interview since becoming the nominee. And itll be with her popular and well accepted running mate. This is going to be a joint interview. I can tell you, you probably know this and any journalist will tell you, this is a big get we congratulations cnns dana bash scoring the big interview. Its scheduled to air on thursday night. Thats a big night going into the holiday weekend. There were efforts by republicans and others saying harris was completely dodging interviews whether this quiets them at all remains to be seen. We know where itll take place. As we get closer to the general election, fall period and early voting some states matter a ton more. Georgia is one of them. Today we also learned President Biden will join harris on the trail for the first time next week in pennsylvania. Why does that matter . You might have seen at the convention, day one was bidens and he ceded the ground back to harris. And yet on key issues, domestically the people who biden brought together in 2020, democrats watched the convention and loved the unity but wondering how it works, those are people that joe biden has a connection, a history. The only person that beat trump in the Electoral College in a president ial race. Them getting out for harris and helpful for the base. No one suggested that joe biden is key to winning over new people or hes doing 51 . Thats one of the reasons democrats wanted him to step aside. When it comes to key states, joe biden going out in places where democrats think he has a following and matters and continuing to show this is a unified front, well, thats something that not only Kamala Harris draws on, but lets be clear, something her opponent cannot draw on. We didnt see any former president s out in force at the convention let alone in key states they might matter. A contrast with trump and the lack of unity with the traditional history of the Republican Party. Theres news that harris is making inroads with the flip of the coin. I told you how some of the republicans, including former president s arent all in with President Trump and some of their aids are going towards Kamala Harris. This is new. About 200 aides to bush, mccain and romney coming together, making it count in a big open letter they say we have disagreements with harris, plenty of them, but, quote, the alternative is simply untenable. This is strange. And republicans are finding it hard to align behind it. Also the more donald trump runs the more republicans down ballot are going to lose. Theyre not going to try to keep this man on top while he pretty much destroys their party along the way. There are options theyre looking at that include Kamala Harris and paying attention to the fact they dont have to agree with everything that is part of the Democratic Party line but there are things with donald trump they dont want to see move forward. Donald trump is running a vengeance campaign hes angry. This isnt about the people, the Republican Party, down ballot races this is about donald trump invoking his vengeance on everyone he believes has done him wrong. For donald trump this is something he never wanted to do, his two biggest things he hates the most happen to be women and people of color, he sees both of those in Kamala Harris this is a difficult thing for him to have to overcome. Jack smith adjusting but still on offense this was the trial affected by the Supreme Court ruling. Here you have a new Superceding Indictment that came down late today. This is superceding with no new charges but presented to a new grand jury. This is jack smith and the Justice Department complying with the Supreme Courts ruling which favored trump and created a new type of immunity there wasnt any type of immunity in any legal precedent for whats called official acts. Legal scholars debated it but heres what it means to jack smith who must comply with Supreme Court rulings. The times reporting on the new indictment saying much of the old indictment remains untouched. Trump faces the same four charges. So, this is jack smith saying we will follow the law and we think theres a way we can continue to bring this case, the bulk of it the same against defendant trump but also adjusted where they felt the law required them to. Thats what happened when you get a new court ruling. They removed details about how trump tried to use the doj to overturn Election Results or created lies and fraud. And removed Jeffrey Clark, a trump ally at the doj who was listed. Interfering with the doj was one of those plots we marked several as arrows. And you might see down there doj sbr feerns. Its one of the things that happened later third to the bottom in december 2020. Now the doj following the Supreme Courts orders is stating this is an official act. You can see the doj interference well put that back up may have still occurred. That is to say there was a plot, if we can get the arrow up im going to show you again. There it is. The plot to get the doj to interfere still occurred. Whats different now this is why the Supreme Court is powerful you can see we changed it to green because theyre saying thats official, not eligible to be charged as a federal crime. Smith also has been busy appealing a ruling to try to keep alive the classified documents case in florida. The Supreme Courts immunity ruling relates to that as well. That momentous decision by the Supreme Court ruling former President Donald Trump is entitled to some immunity from prosecution. Justice Clarence Thomas took things a step further and said were not sure even the appointment of a Special Counsel named jack smith was legal. That gave judge cannon a green light if they wanted to go in the direction she took it with a 93 page opinion dismissing the indictment in its entirety. This is Justice Thomas telegram to judge cannon coming to its full fruition. So jack smith has been dealt setbacks in the lower court and Supreme Court. The news here when taken together he is trying to get the florida case basically rebooted, and a lot of legal experts think a higher court that is less friendly to trump would probably allow that and trying to maintain the coup trial while acknowledging what the Supreme Court said about official acts. You handled cases like this its unusual to have the Supreme Court jump in in the middle and create whats basically new law but jack smith has to play by the rules. What do you see him doing in the new Coup Indictment today . From an old prosecutors perspective, i think jack smith is being appropriately relentless. And he has really carefully tailored this indictment. Its gone from 45 pages to i think 36 pages. As you point out, the big thing was the pulling out of the Jeffrey Clark routine, trying to convince the Justice Department on to come out with the false statements about the Election Fraud. The other thing i missed was they also pulled out the Attorney General advising the former president that there was no Election Fraud. I think that was a nice piece of proof that they dont have anymore. But i tell you what, the indictment as it reads now, as mind blowing as it was before, from a trial tactician perspective, dont make perfect the enemy of the good. Theres an awful lot in this indictment that just screams out for kind of Slam Dunk Area in terms of what theyre going to be able to prove, their charges. So theres a you know, i think a lot of peoples initial reaction when the Supreme Court came out its been eviscerated and i think jack smith came through here with a Superceding Indictment, as you point out, having another grand jury find beyond a reasonable doubt that excuse me, beyond probable cause to believe that a crime was committed here. And theyve done an awfully nice job. Well see how the judge rules to determine whether or not it was properly tailored in accordance with the Supreme Court ruling. When i say appropriately relentless, because it comes at the same time as you point out that hes filed his appeal with the judge cannon ruling. I think theres another really strong argument there that judge cannon has ignored decades, if not in fact, i think jack smith points out centuries of procedures here where the appointments provisions were upheld for this type of appointment of him. I guess its one of the arguments i think he makes is that the Attorney General officially appointments assistant United States attorneys. My certificate was signed by Attorney General edward piece. But this goes back to saying if this Attorney General garland cant appointment jack smith he cant appoint an assistant u. S. Attorney of which there are many across the country to prosecute cases. So i think he made good cases for the prosecution on the Election Fraud case and i think hes done a really nice job of appealing and articulating the strong arguments that he has with regard to appealing judge cannons ruling. I have a minute left with you. Let me read one other part from jack smith. He said trump the defendant had no official responsibilities for the certification because youre not in charge of certifying your own win or loss but saying he had a personal interest as a Candidate Being named winner of the election. What do you think jack smith is saying back to the Supreme Court . I remind viewer yeah but the one thing let me finish one thought. Yes. David, i want to say the Supreme Court was trying to help trump but they left the door open they could have said we tossed the whole thing were the Supreme Court. But they did a split and jack smith answers saying give me a break, he was a candidate at the insurrection he wasnt a Government Official dealing with his own loss. Thats a great point because a big chunk of this Superceding Indictment focuses on Vice President and the president s efforts to have him play a role that he didnt really have other than ceremonial in the senate to reject the electors. That as well as his speech on the ellipsis was really, as jack smith said, okay, guess what, he wasnt acting as president. He didnt have official duties with regard to certification of electors he didnt have official duties when he made those speeches. What he did, what he was, it was in his campaign thats probably where the rubber hits the road here in terms of the judges challenges in determining how well he has tailored this indictment down to the Supreme Court ruling right down to the Certification Process and his interactions with mike pence. Let me say one thing, notwithstanding, thats an important part of the case, i think its a powerful point of the case. I think even if the judge tears that away which i dont think she will do. The rest of it with the fake electors and the conspiracy to defraud the United States and americans of their right to have the vote counted i think those are very strong cases he has there. What does it mean that harris is doing this and how did it feel for you just as a person . Man, for me it was a dream realized. I am nearly a decade in the reproductive rights work despite being only 24 i worked for Kamala Harris when i was just 19 as one of the younger staffers in history full time on the digital staff on that first president ial run. So getting to see my candidate of choice on stage getting the nomination and also influencers Playing A Key Role My Past Position in a strategy i got to see come full circle was so many ways to me. Olivia we have more sound of this, lets take a look of both of you. I was a free lunch kid raised in Public Housing and i got my health care at planned parenthood. Weve seen that tendency in many countries. The other reason could be that the parties dont often really target, engage or listen to them. How do you think the Harris Campaign is doing on that front . Well, as a youth organizer, somebody whos been involved in Democratic Politics in georgia since i was 14, i know from personal experience that democrats are trying to reach out to young people. I know both of our other guests all of us at the convention we had more than 1,000 young delegates. That is not an easy position to get you have to show up to the meetings, get elected, you got to care and get involved but with 1,000 delegates from all over the country i had so many young folks come up to me from texas, tennessee, alaska and fo vote is another thing. I know this campaign is more dedicated and focused to reaching out and supporting and hearing young people than any other National Campaign ive ever seen. Wow. On a lighter note, deja, did you see how much coffee parker drinks . Did you get any read on that . Because every time we have seen him in the tiktoks or when nobody is looking, he seems caffeinated. Listen, we all needed to be caffeinated to be out there. As Content Creators, most of us have fulltime jobs outside of this, things that we are experts in, work that we are doing, and we are also a oneperson show, editing, filming, styling our content, so caffeine is well earned. Olivia, how do you feel about the way this has evolved . Because in the obama era, that was back long enough, and im going to date myself, but that was back long enough ago where people would talk about epolitics, ecampaigning, email, we dont do that with phones. Anyone who has been around campaigns knows phone banks are a thing. We dont talk about phone politics. Theres something about recent or new technology that people get kind of really stuck in the mud about, and then a decade or two later were like, right, thats just life, and obviously, if i may, some of your generation is growing up with these tools, so theyre part of life. Its not everyone whos young is always making their own videos. People do it their own way. You have grown up in this milieu, what can you teach us or our viewers who may not be on tiktok every day about whats changing . Ill date myself. I was in kindergarten when barack obama won his first president ial election. But the epolitics aspect of this is i think it was very clear talking to young people there at the convention. I had a young man come up to me. He said, i started watching your tiktoks four years ago, i was 14, and now im the youngest delegate from new mexico. He just turned 18. That is the tangible impact that this social media politics atmosphere has had is that it is actually mobilizing young people on the ground to get involved in their communities. Like parker said, thats a real thing that we saw with not just the delegates but you had young people on the platform committee, the rules committee, the credentials, they are very much getting involved in the democratic process, and it is extremely exciting and a worthwhile investment. Parker, go ahead. Well, you know, i couldnt agree more. Out of the ten people that were on our committees from the state of georgia, five of them were Young Democrats and they are five of my best friends. I was really glad to see that representation, and ill be frank with you all, i became an influencer out of nowhere. Im not the biggest fan of tiktok, you know, i called my senators when the bill came up. I genuinely did not want to go on social media to make these videos. I have a Public Policy degree from the university of michigan. I have been working in politics enough to know whats at stake. If my silly caffeinated self can go on camera and tell people about what gerrymandering is or why Ballot Initiatives matter, or why its so hard to vote in georgia, and you cant register within 30 days of an election, and lines at the polls and absentee ballots, im happy to do that. I have a responsibility to help other people in this generation, and keep people in the fight that these folks have been in for so long. That was so real. I went viral unexpectedly when i was 16 for an interaction, bird dogging, if youre an organizer, you know what that means, jeff flake, around his efforts to defund planned parenthood. That was my first viral video that launched my career as a content creator. I want to flag something as we look to the future. The nature of what it means to be a public figure, to be a political figure is changing and at the root of it is an aspect of Content Creation and personal brand building and monitoring and creating a persona online.
