Nearly 70 million votes already cast and if youre thinking of using the Postal Service to mail in your balballot, time to start thinking of a plan b almost 50 of all first class mail was not delivered on time thats from the week of october 16th, making it 14 weeks in a row during which the usps missed its target the safety, the certainty, and the vote is now a critical concern. In wisconsin, about 40 of active registered voters have already cast their ballots but if the mail is slow, those votes could be thrown out. The Supreme Court, you see, has now declined to change the states voting laws, which means absentee ballots received after the polls close will not count at all even if theyre postmarked today. It was back in april during that primary, the widely criticized primary, that 70,000 votes were only made legal by a court order that allowed latearriving ballots postmarked by election day. The court order yesterday takes away that relief, and that suggests many milwaukee officials to say they are condemning that decision what it means for a large municipality like milwaukee is that a lot of people will lose their opportunity to vote. That lawsuit was very much about recognizing delays with postal delivery and affording municipalities the opportunity to count latearriving absentee ballots. Reporter now, the latest numbers on the Wisconsin Elections commission tell us there are about 300,000 absentee ballots statewide that have yet to be returned Election Officials are also warning it will be a slow count for those absentee ballots there is a lot of the manual labor and they are not even allowed to open up the envelopes until 8 00 election night. Shep to test the speed of the mail ahead of elections, nbc stations across our nation have been running their own test, sending more than 1400 letters between major cities for the last several months. What did they learn in the postal speed test . Heres cnbcs kayla tauschi. Reporter as lines wrap around polling stations nationwide, mailin ballots are flooding into the u. S. Postal service, an autumn crush following a summer of discontent warnings of delays and cuts to resources just ahead of a high stakes election. Are you highly confident that those ballots would then be received extremely highly confident. Reporter with confidence in question, nbc stations have been putting the post office to the test, sending hundreds of letters Cross Country since august nearly all arriving within a week, 88 within three days. The post offices ontime benchmark. Then came october. Only 79 of our more than 800 letters arrived in that time frame, and a dozen, or 1. 5 , were unaccounted for after ten days a potential headache if those were ballots and their addressee was the board of elections the real challenge comes if ballots come in and they have to be counted, making sure theres enough people to do it, making sure the ballots come in early enough so theres time reporter and in battleground states like florida, late ballots could have an impact more than 5 million voters have requested to vote by mail. If 75,000 votes disappeared, thats onethird ballots must be postmarked by election day and can be counted for up to ten days after the head of elections in Hillsborough County says this. I have to load the early voting totals into the server shortly before the election. So by 7 00 election night, well be releasing a lot of unofficial results. Just look at tearrant county in texas. It includes big cities like arlington and ft. Worth. About onethird of all mailin ballots have faulty barcodes they are unreadable by machines. They are now in the process of duplicating those ballots, hand marking each one tarrant got about 60,000 votes that are affected. Once the ballots are added and the votes counted, theres only one number that matters in the end. That number is 270 thats how many electoral votes it takes to win. Thats right, shep, so lets take a look here this is our battle for 270 map what youre seeing here in gray, this is the battleground for this president ial race, and it looks like a lot of states, theres 13 of them here, but you can break them up into a couple different categories pretty easily these three, new hampshire, minnesota and nevada, those are three blue states, Clinton States from 2016 that the Trump Campaign says they think they can flip and theyre trying to flip in 2020 obviously if they did, that could change the map a little bit. But so far if you look at the polling, at least, in those three states, the polling has been favoring joe biden. So trump would like to flip one of them, but if the polling proves right in those, that would put biden at 232 that was Hillary Clintons number in 2016 that would mean every other gray state you see right here, that was a state that trump won in 2016 where hes playing defense now, you can see he needs to shore up a lot to get back to his 2016 win. Where does President Trump have the best shot in texas he won by nearly 20 points in 2016 it looks very competitive right now. Its an absolutely mustwin state for the president. If he does get it, you can see his electoral vote will creep up there. If biden were to get that, absolutely catastrophic for donald trump if trump can get texas, that would keep him in the game his campaign would also look at ohio and iowa, states he won by nearly 20 points in 2016 they look competitive right now, but they become mustwin states for the president. You can see that would start to get his numbers up there as well where else would the Trump Campaign look . Florida. 29 electoral votes the polls look about even right now. Trump carried it in 2016 that would put him over 200. Everything im clicking on here is a mustwin state for the president. Were just working through here to see what it would take if he were to get to 270 then his campaign would also need to get North Carolina, the polling there looks close. Would need to get georgia, the polling there is basically dead even now you see the map is really trying to narrow what would trump need here he would still need two states wisconsin, michigan, pennsylvania he would need two. Most likely his campaign is targeting pennsylvania aggressively and theyre targeting arizona aggressively he would need probably those two but some combination there all those battleground states i just showed you, this would have two of them, two of them potentially flipping to biden with trump still winning trump playing a lot of defense out there. He needs a lot to break his way.
