Adding hert mueller would not decide the result of the midterm election, saying perhaps he will release the findings before novembers midterms, but the notion that anything incriminating will return the house to democrats is specious. Unless the president is led out in handcuffs, democrats best chance to retake the house is to campaign on ideas, policies, and personal strengths, not just saying how terrible the other team is. Is, as a middleclass independent who always swings liberal, i am ashamed of the Democratic Party. That is why me and many of the middle class leaning liberals voted for trump. Starts who the democrats putting their policies for instead of those who dont work and the illegal immigrants. With trump. G make America Great again. To seehat would you like democrats do, either on the topic of immigration or the middle class . Caller i would like them to stop being obstructionist and to establish policies that protect the middle class. What they are doing is handing out america to people who dont work. They think that is the way to gain votes and they are wrong. The middle class needs support. They are not getting it from the democrats. It comes to immigration, are you and advocates of the wall are you an advocate of the wall . Illegals have broken the law. I would like to see a wall, but feasible. It would be helpful for people to determine what matters to them and see which party is offering things along the line and what matters to them. From local elections and involvement like that, nationally. Become more aware of what a blessing our democracy is. To votethat we all need and we need to have an informed vote. That is frank, in utah. The New York Times, trump finishes his vacation, Michael Schmidt writing it appears to be getting off to a lavish start before the president arrived. Rights we have only ed to vote a couple of generations. Religion is the tool that keeps the masses from killing the rich people. Toold trump is using that with precision. Host joe, columbia, South Carolina. Our line for democrats. Go ahead. Caller i am hoping upicanamerican men stand to any type of injustice happen in their communities against anybody. I hope theyd take a civil manner in trying to bring some type of consciousness to the forefront, but for me, i am hoping this year i get more in tune. In southt is joe carolina, talking about the message she has two message he has to washington. Democrats, 202 7488000. Republicans, 202 7488001. Independents, 202 7488002. Thisll continue on with theme for all three hours of the program. By talkshowoined host and columnist through the program, giving their thoughts. Starting a sauce this morning, arnie starting us off this morning, arnie, from concord, New Hampshire. Joining us on washington journal. We are talking about messages being delivered to washington in 2018. What is at the top of your list . Guest the greatest concern i have seen is the message delivered by washington. You can fit it on a bumper sticker. You are on your own, jack. What is look at happening with the regulation, the rise of inequality, aided and abetted by the tax reform 2017 was a great year to be rich, 2018 will be a better year for you to be rich. When you see what is going on ofh climate change, the cost 2018 alone will be 400 billion and 500 billion. What do we do . We give the over rich huge tax cuts and we dont put anything aside to address the extreme weather of 2017. 2018 will be worse. Pay attention to the facts. Congress does not look at the evidence or the reality. They are blindly saying we need Less Government at the time we need a stronger safety net. We dont want to address the deficit, we want to explode the deficit. I am shocked they are obsessed with the word no. No regulation, no taxes, no climate change, at a time those things make a difference in the quality of life for the majority of americans. That is my message. Figure out a word that is hard to say yes. Is the avenue for democrats or others in congress for those interests and concerns you have expressed . The mewe saw the rise of too movement. It does not have a leader. It is every woman in every walk of life who has said i have been theed at home, in workplace. It is leaderless, but it has created a message of significant rebellion and change. The democrats keep saying where is the leader . We dont need one. You can point your finger at transgender, poor people, hispanics, everyone. You have harmed every silo in america except the rich and famous. Those are the only people you protected. Need aocrats dont leader. Donald trump has delivered a message. This is your government, you better take it back. Any democrats who stand out who are the main voices you would like to hear from . What you saw happening in soginia, with the rise of many interesting people who emerged on the scene, you will see mayors and governors who are going to find their voice. With predictable voices is they have been in washington too long. They have their hands on the lobbyist for money. They have been massaged by the system. Bernie sanders has been around politics forever. You could not even spell his name or find vermont on a map. This is the year of change. Inequality, the events of 2017 and climate change, and between the deregulation that leaves so Many Americans vulnerable, and health care failing because they helped it fail, i dont know who this does not hurt. Government is it responding and respecting you . It. Better change dont wait for the Democratic Party to knock on your door. There, getme out your friends to help you. Start making the change because you are the change. In your stay, when it comes to the Opioid Crisis, those are up, but overall deaths are down. What do you see in the coming year when it comes to this topic in your state . Guest in New Hampshire, it is the seventh richest state in the nation. We have the highest Median Income in the country probably. We are rich. Land when it we comes to aiding and addressing opioids. We rank at the bottom for services. What does that tell you with send all deaths with send all tanyl deaths . Two or three months. You die in that time. Services matter. Safety nets matter. You cannot solve this crisis without helping people. An excuse. Ve we are not west virginia. West virginia is struggling and they rank number one. If you are not going to spend your money on your people, what is the money for . That is part of the problem i see. Crisis is like the inequality crisis. The economy serves the top 1 , but not the rest of us. For if it does not serve the rest of us . What is it for if we let people die because we will not invest in services they need to recover. Across the street from an elementary school. Talk to teachers about the new crop of 5, 6, and sevenyearolds coming into their question into their classrooms. They are children of parents of addiction. They are being raised by their grandparents. You can see the remnants of the addiction in them because the parents were addicted when they had them. Addiction. Ust about it is about children who are coming into our schools, that have those burdens on problems and our schools are not prepared for them. It is going to affect your child in my child. To talk about matters of local politics, chris sununu is your governor. What are the chances of him being reelected . Newt donald trump won hampshire. We were the first state to give him the primary vote. He did lose to Hillary Clinton. Sununu whoand chris suggested busloads of voters came across from massachusetts to vote for democrats. That was a lie and he knows it was a lie. If that was true, how did he get elected and not donald trump . Here is the new poll that came out. Has about a 53 approval rating. Guess what Donald Trumps rating is in New Hampshire . They control everything. Maybe not the federal level, but at the state level. His approval level in New Hampshire, 27 . A whopping 27 . Hold on to that. This is the state that gave him primary. Win in the this is the state he barely lost in the election. He has tanked. The numbers about the economy are all as low as Donald Trumps numbers. Host arnie has a show on w and hn whnh radio. Stream online. Hnfm. Com. We cover everything that is going on in the country. We look of the stories no one talks about. They will make the difference in the 2018 election. It ignored the tweets and focus on your life and your reality. Jack. Hosts andshow columnists accompanying your thoughts this morning. Joining us now, mitch, a senior political analyst. Guest happy new year. I hope you are doing well. The carolina journal, what is it and what do you bring to the publication . Print it is a monthly thinkation, a free market tank. It is focused on North Carolina politics and public policy. We watch what is happening in washington. Columnist. A i cohost the weekly carolina radio show and am the senior political analyst for the john locke foundation. Host do you have a specific message or messages . Several messages for the folks in washington. They have taken care of the tax package. It has good and bad points. On the whole, it is focusing on the goal of Economic Growth, getting it rolling in the United States. You need Economic Growth to take care of the other things people would like to see happen. With the tax package taking care of, next, address spending. Left of Center People have commented on the fact this tax package is in place means we will have a large impact on the federal deficit. It is time for congress and the administration to say where can we rein in spending . We have to address health care. We saw a number of attempts to repeal and replace the Affordable Care act. Those did not happen. Something is going to have to happen on the health care front, especially since the tax package the individual mandate. A lot of people said that was the key to the Affordable Care act. If you did not force young and Healthy People to buy insurance, you help pay for the Health Care Needs of those who are older and sicker, the system would fall apart. If you dont have the individual mandate, i think you will have a hard time of following through on the promises, if it were possible of following through, on the promises of the. Ffordable care act something needs to be done on immigration policy. Trump wants to build the wall, stepping up enforcement measures. Congress has to set a policy. I am not sure where that stands, but they will have to reach some agreement to deal with immigration in a way you have open, ited states being an welcoming place, but also have people comply with the rule of law and set standards. Every nation around the world has some sort of immigration policy that is enforced. Hours have not been enforced for not beenours have enforced for years. Some decision needs to be made on that front. Host when it comes to spending, are are the themes we reporting on . Welfare reform, is that a good area to start . There needs to be effort on welfare reform. In the 1990s, the welfare , there weretaken good results coming out of that. More things people dont remember is it only addressed a small part of what you could encompass under the term welfare. There has been slide back on some of those reforms that need to be addressed, and the larger area of all of the social benefits and entitlements in working, whatt is does not, what can be changed, what do you need to change the qualifications. Entire, complete look at that system would be merited. When it comes to health care, you mentioned the individual mandate. Republicans wanted to see and overturn of obamacare completely. Is there a compromise republicans and democrats can come up with when it comes to providing health care . Guest i am sure they could. The key will be will anyone want to compromise . Will they make this an electionyear issue . Who is this a better Election Year issue for . Do republicans go back to voters and say look, we told you this was going to happen, it is happening now, you need to keep us in power. Democrats say look at the republicans who let your health care unravel, vote for us. We will see history is on the side of the democrats. Election, itterm is a republican administration, things should be on the side of the democrats. The impact of trump is unclear. He is not a traditional republican, has not had the traditional republican voting base. Some support in places where no one expected a republican to. Does the normal historical pattern hold true that it will benefit the democrats . One of the things that will be a challenge, if their message is entirely antitrust, i dont know they will be as successful as they would otherwise. There are some people who really trump is doing. Others dont necessarily like to see him as president , but like the fact he is speaking out against political correctness, washington elites. Much ofld like to see what happens in washington be thrown out, but lots of things change and the democrats are only saying we are against , they are not going to do as well as they expect. The editors of the local paper, the raleigh news observer, talked about economic accomplishments. Said it is a governor who knows how to sell estate and it is also about compromise on the infamous house bill. What do you think about the first year, particularly his economic accomplishments . Economice accomplishments in North Carolina were substantial. Governor cooper, whether he deserves it or not, will get much of the credit because he is the governor. Much of the credit goes towards the republicanled General Assembly and policies they have pursued since they took control in 2011. Especially when they passed a major tax reform bill in 2013. Becauseeaping rewards of changes put in place largely because of republicans. Roy cooper got the benefits of that in his first year in office. Becausedeserve credit he is a salesperson for North Carolina. Roy cooper is trying to sell North Carolina as a place to do business and he does deserve credit for that. More creditto get than he deserves because he is the chief executive, but a lot theredit does belong to republicanled General Assembly. Think to watch, some may see this as of secure, but whatever the u. S. Supreme court does in the partisan , this couldng cases have a huge impact on the way we elect congress through our future. U. S. Ous rulings from the Supreme Court has said the United States does not have proportional representation, meaning if you if the democrats get 55 of the vote, they should get 55 of seats in congress or vice versa. The courts ruled against that. Oppose partisan gerrymandering have been trying to get at proportional representation i other means. If the court says we are going to take this efficiency gap or some other way against the idea that too much partisan gerrymandering is unconstitutional, you could see impact on the makeup of the u. S. House of representatives. It will have an impact here in North Carolina. We have a couple of cases in court now, in which the General Assembly in true districts for 13 Congressional District ofbers with the purpose electing 10 republicans and three democrats. They were not hiding. Debates, the the person leaving this said we drew a map to elect 10 maps and three democrats because we could not draw a map to elect 11 republicans and three democrats and two democrats. If you look at that map of how people vote and you see there is a large swath of red and these pockets of blue where people live, that is why republicans have a geographical advantage when it comes to Congressional Districts. We have to move something move toward Something Like proportional representation, that would be a boon for democrats and a knock for republicans. How often do you post for your website . Have something new every day. You will not find anything but a new years message today. There is a free print publication that comes out monthly, as well. Host happy new year to you. Is our first hour done, taking a look at your message to washington for the next two hours, we will hear from you as well as columnists throughout the hour. If you want to give us your thoughts host we will take those calls. President trump specifically sending out a twitter address where they feel an accomplishment for them in 2017, there is a video overseeing those accomplishments. The largest tax cut in the history of our country. Crave a nation we birth in the gave modern world and we shape tomorrows world with strength and skill of american hands. For america, the sky is never the limit. Host david in georgia, independent line, your message to washington, go ahead. Caller thank you and happy new year, pedro. Will i had to laugh at the ready person there. The color stuttered and stammered all over herself. I guess she does not listen to fax. My message to washington is you a president who pokes pushed forward a tax packet that has given this nation economic hope. The message is to get control, stop these illegal leaks, and hold people accountable. Next message of hope. Host are you worried about deficit issues . Caller i am but i think entitlements reform will help the little bit there and the creation of jobs. I was actually forced into Social Security 4. 5 years ago and i am a pack rat so i figured in about seven more months, i will have depleted everything i put into Social Security. I liven live that long, off of less then 1400 a month. We have to live within your means. For the gop to come up with these tax precious, i do not see to seedren and i want my grandchildren and children at better jobs and economic stability. Cj is next and joins us from minnesota, republican line, high. Good morning to you and america and happy new year to america. Thank you for allowing me to talk. I listened to your talkers and the people calling in. Station on the radio was the one who had the most to say with what is really going on. Can you say we will make the country great again . For some people, the country was never considered great. I speak about so many people and if you want this country to be great, you have to include everybody. That is just a Campaign Slogan and as far as congress is concerned, i blame them more than the president because congress has the power to legislate the president just like they did obama. Appointment for the Supreme Court judge and now they are giving all the credit to dominant trump. They left it open for a whole year for the next president anyway so why should trump get the president . He walked around like he did something big. That is how the Republican Party operates. Poll on the selections because they did not do anything for several years and got reelected anyway. Host when you talk about people left out, who specifically and how . Caller look at the native americans when they went on with the pipeline, some of them are now sitting in jail. Democracy now is one of my Favorite Network channels, they that started up trump let they the pipeline go through but that is the most dangerous thing and congress is letting it happen. Not only that but you look at the way the hispanic people are being deported, that were are not here, they doing anything to prevent that one congress is supposed to do something about it. There are so many things that are Congress Passes job and they are not doing it. Host ok. Independent line. Caller thank you. Happy new year to everyone. In part to answer your last i want to think President Trump for allowing us to keep my money in our paychecks starting next month. I would like to thank our president for letting our veterans, see a doctor when they need to, instead of dying while waiting online for months and months as occurred in the past , and lastly, my ,essage to washington would be to tell theies, politicians like governor jerry brown and his democratic friends in california, and the democratic controlled machine in chicago to stop letting out a from prisoninals because common sense and the facts tell us they go on to kill and injure innocent people like kate steinle, and innocent whole in the inner cities are victims unnecessarily. Passage of thehe tax bill, you talked about the benefits you will see starting in the next month or so, the what about the idea of state and local income taxes and deductibility especially from a state like new jersey . Well, there is an exemption, i believe, of 10,000 or more, but the bottom line is the majority, of 85 of are going to see more money in their paychecks and less money to the government, including states like mine and new jersey. That is a fact. Way, i would also like to thank our president for bringing , which benefits every american, democrat, republican, black, white, etc. Ast before you go, you have new governor, democrat phil murphy, what do you expect from him . Caller not much unfortunately. I pray it will not be a case like derek brown in california who lets out criminals and who will go on to commit more crimes. It is just common sense. Host beverly is in ohio, democrats lied. Good morning. Caller the message i want to send to the president , specifically, i want him to in hisr that hes had campaign or when he was early president , that he said he loved war. That scares me with this korea and i found out when this young man was killed and maimed David Johnson, that in United States has troops 177 countries out of 191 countries on the lannett. Why do we have all the strips . Increase thents to because theyet love war. Think of people who will be killed by war. Think we are exempt, but that is what the man in korea is he gets tired us, of killing his people so he is threatening us with bombs. If the president loves were, we might have a war here. Remind him what he said. Thank you. Our a shout out to producer on his twitter feed, but if you really want to follow it is going on, here are recent tweets from him about what is going on with congress dared congress has 18 days to avert a Government Shutdown and he goes on to say in 2018, the first with president ns trump, the majority of house and senate are state. Out at out with the old and in with the new. African because of his resignation and Luther Strange lost his election. On tuesday, tina smith and doug jones sworn in as senators went it with a new Senate Makeup in 51 republicans and 49 democrats. He finishes by same house is not back until january 8 to start the second session of the 115th congress. 193 democrats and three vacancies. A plan vacancy this month with pat leaving by january 31. At craig caplan is how you follow him on twitter. Follow the goingson in congress. Clarence is next. Good morning. In allg the presidency of his actions and the response from the people of our country, it amazes me that we as a people seem to get caught up in charlotte intends to come on the stage every so often. One thing about bringing the jobs back, he has factories all around the world. He goes on and on about how other people should do this. When did we stop being great . What is happened . We talk about the military. We have had the Strongest Military for the last 50 years. I never saw that. To me, the effect is like jim jones and Michael Qureshi had on people. They will follow him to their own death. It does not seem to matter. That is what i had to say, thank you. Host get infrastructure done, increase the military budget. I will compose his work, then why are red states the poor states in the nation. Facebook andon cspan. John is on our democrats line. John good morning. How are you . Merry christmas. I want to once again say happy. Ew year to the nation being a person coming from a different country at age 26 1980 five atrom the age of 26, i am now 58 years thisi just want to say country has given some of us and i want toife speak directly to the Republican Party. Im a christian. Immorality and i should hold they the president accountable and not to because we are going to leave this world and if we want to deliver the message of to the nation, then the Republican Party and the leaders need to hold them accountable. That is the way it is supposed to be. We are christian. We want for the christian message to stand, to bring hope in the lives of other people. That is what i want to say. Thank you. John from ohio giving his message to washington and 2018. Good the editor morning. Happy new year. Host what is bleeding heartland . It is a website primarily about iowa politics and we have published for 11 years now today. When it comes to specific messages to washington, what would those messages be to you think . Guest the most imperative tasks for the new year are to extend the Childrens Health Insurance Program and do something to help the jailers. It is a basic issue of justice. The dream is that we have a who camehousand people to the country through no choice of their own, we should not punish people for what their parents did. I was frankly disappointed democrats did not hold the line and insist on a dreamer action. As for the children Health Insurance program, 9 million kids across the country, it is costeffective and only costs about 15 billion per year for the federal government and republicans just voted to add 1 trillion and a half dollars to the debt, probably more like 2 trillion after people game the system. 16 billion a year is a small healtho pay to give insurance security to millions of families. There is no excuse for them not to get that done in the fall and i want them to do that immediately. Host we heard from some senators about a possible for daca. Nal deal do you think anything will be done and what our longterm effects particularly as you see them in iowa . Guest a border while is not a big issue for most people in iowa. We have loudmouth stuff a loudmouth congressman, steve king, who likes to make it a big issue. Opinion polling is overwhelming that 80 or more of americans andk it is only fair wish not punish the dreamers for their parents actions. There was already a comprehensive Immigration Reform bill that included a lot of Border Security measures. And not punish the dreamers for their parents actions. Into lesson 13, the Senate Passed it with a huge bipartisan majority and house leaders refused to bring it up. I would be willing to accept a compromise like that here at i think a wall is a red herring and a waste of money and most people in the border states do not even want it. How many in iowa get the type of service with the chip program if no deal is met . It is significant, about 60,000 in iowa and we only have a population of three 300,000 people. The 60,000 kids who qualify for what we call hawkeye, our version of the Health Insurance program, only about a quarter of them would qualify for medicaid if congress does not do a longterm extension. You have 44,000 kids whose parents would bes to make other arrangements and our iowa state ifhorities are planning out congress does not do a longterm extension, they will send out letters in february telling them a money will likely run out in late march or april. Host all of this is under the shadow of the 28 c later this year. What do you see as the potential of democrats gaining the senate or the house . Guest i think some people are counting their chickens a little too much. There is every possibility we could see a democratic wave election. I am not counting on that. There are so many things we do not know. Donald trump will not be on the ballot. The fact that more and more republicans and independents are moving away from donald trump does not necessarily mean that republican candidates will do poorly in the midterms. The best Case Scenario for democrats is the virginia scenario of high democratic turnout, higher than the usual and a suppressed republican turnout. In 2014 and september, there were huge stories no one could have anticipated. The ebola virus was one of them. And number of terrorist actions were in the news. Every competitive u. S. Senate race in the country shifted away from the democratic candidate in 2014. It is a good example of how we just do not know what might, ont might be an issue not anyones mind out that could end up influencing how voters approach that election. But i think it could be a great election for democrats. We have two of the four house seats in iowa which will be highly competitive. The first and the Third District , david young, twoterm republicans, they will be strongly challenged and we will have a competitive governors race as well. Right now, i am not prepared to predict that there will be a huge democratic wave. Host there is a poll about the governor there who say half of people approving of kim reynolds theynother have saying want another governor. Talk about her term so far and who the other players are whom i challenge her . I thought the poll was interesting. Half people said they approved her work at only 35 said they would vote to elect her if the election were held today. I thought that was astonishing. She is a relatively new governor. She has been part of the Administration Since 2011. I think the poll showed it was a mistake, that alive islands are not happy with the way things are going. Our state budget is in a shamble. The Reynolds Administration privatized our medicaid, which serves about a halfmillion people. Portion out of a population of 3 million and the privatization is not going well. Kim reynolds has been stubborn about it saying it is improving and that we will stay the course. Nd that we are not going back i do not see a lot of leadership from her addressing real problems facing the state. School funding is stagnating Mental Health services are terrible, and it is mostly happy talk from the governor. Asked for the challengers, we have seven candidates and the democratic time. The governor has a strong challenger in the republican primary. I do not think she is likely to lose it but as the budget situation continues to deteriorate, she will have explaining to do the spring. Our primary is in june. Things could get worse in the budget right when people are starting to Pay Attention to the governors race. Three candidates who probably have the best chance of running the democratic riemer he would walton, a state senator who is a lot of support from organized labor and a des moines businessman who will probably be the most funded candidate, and john who might be best known for many people as having run john kerryss president ial campaign in 2004 but he was an early supporter of barack obama and held different positions during the Obama Administration and he will publicly raise enough money to put together a strong statewide campaign. It is a wide open race for the primary, democrats will coalesce around the person because kim reynolds is just extremely unpopular in this party right now. Host what is the state legislator makeup . Guest republicans have strong majorities, 29 of 50 in the senate and 59 of 100 in the house. It is hard for me to see a path for Iowa Democrats to take a majority. In 2020, i think both majorities will be up for grabs just because of the way they are lining up. We do not know the turnout because iowa in 2010 and 2014, the democratic turnout dropped off at a bit more than the republican turnout did compared to the previous president ial election. If that is different from the way it was in virginia, democrats may do better than i am anticipating. A local story in iowa, about iowa state elections, it is about David Johnson. Now deciding to run as an independent. Can you set the stage . Is a fascinating figure. He has been in the state senate for almost 16 years now. He represents one of the most republican districts in the even have a did not challenger in 2010 or 2014. He has always been a little independentminded. He opposed the privatization of medicaid. He was troubled by the republican failure to find natural resources. Certainly theas reason why David Johnson left the Republican Party but it was not the only misgiving he had about the Republican Party. He was occasionally willing to cross party lines. After last summers is primary in protest of donald trump being the nominee, during a legislative session, he was the only independent to serve as the 1920s. He voted with democrats on most of the most high profile bills. Antiabortion so the one prominent bill where he stuck with the republicans was the waiting period but he was usually with the democrats more often than not. Republicans will really go after his seat. Republicand be a seat. The question is whether David Johnson who is highly regarded in his part of the state, whether he can hold onto enough republicans, he should have an overwhelming majority of democrats, who will not nominate a candidate. It will be interesting to see how well he can defend that seat. How often do you post and what inspires you to post things . Love writing about politics. I covered russian politics from it 95 to 2005 and shifted my focus as russian politics changed. I love it. Most days i post once or twice, most weekdays. Aboutd say it is probably 10 a week on average. There are legislators back in the session a week from today and it should be a very busy year like last year. Host thanks for your time. Happy new year. Up next, lisa thanks for holding from washington dc, republican line. Caller [captioning performed by the national captioning institute, i want to thank the president because i will pay less in taxes, less in taxes in general. The people who are complaining, how many people actually itemize . I choose not to own property because that is my personal preference. I do not have children because that is my personal preference. On my w2 and i still own taxes oh taxes at the end of the year. I hear people say give to chip or this or that you dont take this Entitlement Program away. What about people working every day and paying their taxes and they just want a little break, just the little guy, the regular person . Taxeople do not want a rate, they can send their income tax refunds to me and i will gladly accept them. I listened to the lady talk what the chip program, happened to personal responsibility with parents and number one, having children you can afford to take care of, providing your Health Insurance for your own children . Why is it everyone elses responsibility to do this . Same way with food stamps, and snap. Those are temporary assistance programs. It as everyone making generational lifestyle . D. C. D. C. Und me in people have been on welfare for decades, no reason. Bring bring back welfare to work. Host independent line, larry, hello. Caller good morning, pedro. Im a grandfather raising two grandchildren, and eightyearold granddaughter, 10yearold grandson, due to the fact that their parents are on heroin. Snap and i am on disability myself but i were 42 years of my life. People talkthese about, we have got to reform this or that, welfare is not what you think it is. When i first got my grandchildren, i applied for food stamps and got 300 per month. You should also get financial assistance. I applied for that. Give me 198 dollars per month. Process, they cut my food stamps down. Ande kids are growing cannot help what is happened with their parents. When i go to the store, i am paying more with less. Less aidike to see being given to Foreign Countries and go back home to assist parents and grandparents who are raising their grandchildren, who are raising their children and them when i hear about entitlements and people think the government is really giving away money for nothing, i have whon to people personally never work, when lady did a lot of time in prison, she only gets 200 month. When i sit and hear you say, we get billions of dollars a year, billions of dollars to pakistan, and then you come back home and you say i am abusing the system, i am not abusing the system. That is larry. For about an hour and a half, we have asked people to comment on the message to washington in 2018 and we invite you to call phone lines to let us know. Make your thoughts known on twitter and facebook. Focus of the show today until 10 00 where we will hear from columnists and talkshow hosts for the next hour and a half as well. Primarily, we hear from you, john, democrats line, hello. Caller good morning and happy new year to everyone from the oregon coast and thank goodness for cspan. Inmessage for washington 2018 is i would like to see the democrats show a willingness to , infrastructure and daca but we dont need a wall. If republicans wont compromise after all, they never really on a tax proposal, democrats need to trot a line. Be willing to compromise, but try line. The line is, no wall. On infrastructure, not another runup in the deficit like in a tax bill, but a payasyougo system, for example, i do not think the federal gas tax has in 20 or 25 years. Do you see an interest from democratic leadership about compromising on these issues . I dont know. I am not sure. I know individual senators and Congress People are but i think the leadership would be wise to compromise as long as number one, infrastructure pays for itself with revenue, and two, daca but no wall, and i would point out some previous callers, that working people in the new. Ax bill are getting peanuts the corporations and the 1 are getting the peanuts. In waynesboro, georgia, democrats line. Caller am i on . I was calling about the message what is the tax break or whatever . What is the difference excuse me . Host you are on still. Caller i was wondering about thatessage, how is it people hide their money and take six a low of poor people and i guess what im trying to say is they are all stealing from the government. If a person so poor excuse me . You are still on p listening to your television but go ahead with your comment. Is poor whorson who lies on a foods food stamp application and gets an extra 50 per month, and a person who is a millionaire or a billionaire and has money so he does not pay the income tax and pay the income tax and shares profit with the inheritance tax host cornelius is next, joining us from alexandria, louisiana, republican line. Caller i want to thank you all at cspan. She says you all are alive every day. These other programs take the holidays off and do not have live programming. I want to thank cspan for that and this is my comment. Republicans need to get together and get behind trump. I happen to be an africanamerican, a republican, and i happen to support trump. The people at the last guy trying to talk, they will see. Ax breaks he is right about one thing, the billionaires go to Foreign Countries and high their money and they need to try and bring that stuff back. I believe in a 10 flat tax for everyone. No loopholes or nothing like that. Thank you, sir. You for calling and thank you for watching as well. We are alive 365 days a year from 7 00 to 10 00 in the morning. Congress sometimes come in early and we go to that. We appreciated on this first day of the new year. Tina from minnesota, thank you for calling. You are on. Caller happy new year. We hearling because all is the debt, the debt, the debt. Bernie sanders pointed out we are the wealthiest nation on earth. Where is the wealth . It is not being kept. Our wealth is being bundled up fromocked up and held away the people that caps money that people will be able to keep in their paychecks now, it will infrastructure and all kinds of stuff. So where that money are we going to get the money . We need to tax the wealthy people and the multinational corporations that have forgotten that they are part of the United States of america. Thank you. Minnesota, taking a look at the story, Lake Superior state university, on sunday they released its 43rd annual list from the queens annual misuse and overuse and general uselessness. The 14 words and phrases come from the suggestions made. Let me ask you this, unpacked, impactful, nothing burger, dish, drill down, let that sink down, and fake news. The others are preowned, on boarding and off ordering, hot typo, heater, a champion and from texas, roy is next joining us on the message to washington on this day. Hello, roy. Caller hi. I am from texas but was born in pittsburgh and i wanted to get that out of the way so they do not think i am some texan or thing like that. Do need the law because there are like a billion people trying to get into the United States p or when i was a kid, you only had 100 20 million and now you have 360 million. Going with the guy before, we need to stop giving our money away. Heres ago, i was reading the paper. We gave 31 billion to israel. I said i voted for obama and they said obama will stop that. In 2009, he gave 19 billion and all this time, we were 1 billion and a lot ofort the people alive depend on the a stuff for hospital insurance. Just one other point. Democrats for health care, we would not have it. 12 democrats that voted against obama, we would have a Health System today. Mexico, maine, where harvey is, democrats line. Caller thank you for cspan and thank you for letting me come on. I would like to know why people think in this country that north koreas a big problem. The big problem in the United States of america is the drug thelem, which comes from administration in our own country, pushing drugs. Have doctors you can go to and you get a pain in your left toe and they will give you oxycodone. One out of every four people in the United States of america are addicted to drugs. It is a worse threat to the United States and north korea. Host your message to washington would be what . Caller four donald trump to do something to the Drug Administration in the United States of america and quit as the footing around. Theyre trying to do something and they dont do nothing. Host harvey brings up a kimation on north korea and jongun, the leader of north korea on Bloomberg Television on new years day. Writing that the leader boasted in annual news new years day speech that he had a clear button on his desk and the entire night in states the entire United States host on your message to washington in 2018, we will hear next from wanda from maine, independent line. Caller happy new year. You are doing a great job for cspan especially working on a holiday. Householdto run my more like trump has done. Unfurled from underneath the charities because it goes to the top anyway. And i know a lot of people think the wall is good but they can get over the border one way or another. That wall will not make much of a difference. I had a friend who worked for the Border Patrol many years ago. In,r i would bring them they were told to release them. I had another thing to say. But i cant remember. Are im interested why you taking a change of attitude toward charities. Caller he took a change, you know, i got my Social Security and i got us a 27 raise. 26 went to medicare and everyone is saying the Health Care System is hurting. 26 went to medicare. I try not to use my medicare. I was on opioids and i cut them because i said no, i do not want to get addicted. Say no to drugs. Boycott drugs. There are Simple Solutions people do not realize. Host but you turn your interest to charities. Caller people at the top are probably the ones getting rich anyway. Hello. Republican line. You are on. I think democrats ought to work with President Trump and they ought to go after hillary in them and as far as Social Security, i got zero. Thank you. Ok. your message to washington in 2018 is what were asking you to comment on in the remainder of the program about an hour and 15 minutes or so. Call us host we are on twitter and you can post their and our Facebook Page. Little bit and see if we can get those comments on facebook. The you can post on our Facebook Page. Massachusetts is where margaret is on independent line. Morning. Ood happy new year and many returns of the day to you all. Every timeg because i turned the television on for months, it has been the russians and the irani ants all countries that are supposed to be at us. It is people in the country who have castigated mr. Trump. He put his beautiful family in massacredand they with their insinuations and saying they did this and that. Our own country will take the government down. It is not russia or the others in the country, it is evil. The ones who are evil in this country will take the country the, not russia or any of other countries of the news. News, i thinkhe you journalists would make their money by watching us listen to them argue. People who do that to the country are my father was in world war i and was guest and my mother brought up five of us alone. A place, city to hall in boston on School Street and east to get soldiers relief for five of us. She never got a pension, nothing. Why cant people be satisfied with real things in life . A good bowl of oatmeal in the inanimatenstead of objects, cars and all of this stuff . I feel awful good that i let that out of me. And you did not cut me off, so that is nice. You eat oatmeal every morning then . My mother would put a big bowl of hot oatmeal and say it around the edge. She says it is hot. Host that is margaret in massachusetts, independent line, and i was mistaken, we posted this question on facebook. These are comments this morning. Steve said republicans are the problem, not washington. Tess cuts for the rich are they lie that he goes on from there. Scott brown says the president one, get over it. Grow up. Are 583 more comments i do not have the time to read through. You can if you wish. O to our Facebook Page we invite you to do the same on our twitter feed as well. Joe is a talk show host for wc hb radio. Good morning. I am well, thank you. Messages to washington is the theme of the program. How would you add to that . Been a messages i have listening to have been stunning an interesting here at we have heard a lot of the same things in charlottesville. Very few cities have wanted to put 2017 behind them as much as charlottesville has. , theessage to washington one from the ed gillespie campaign, to this parties especially republican leadership, do not worry about who you pick. Let voters pick the person they want. Ormatter how centrist middleoftheroad they are, they will be cast as a deplorable pickup Truck Driving immigrant child chasing valid and that is the campaign now. Meme may have created. If you are a republican and running for office, that is who you will be. It does not matter, we could run pope paul the second, and he could chase chase down immigrant kids, and we will see it with the senate race. Tim kaineseat is up for grabs. I think he is running. Fundraising ml out and it seems a little quiet from him. With in a world like with michael bloomberg, tim kaine can raise the money he needs with a couple of phone calls. A fourway race for the republican nominations, some great candidates and one is a stewart from, cory a donald trump president ial campaign in virginia, who ran a nearly beat ed with a gubernatorial nomination and is one of the candidates running as. Ell along with ew jackson the message is do what is right for your voters and take the message from democrats and ohio that won the president ial race and understand that like though clinton said, it is the economy, stupid. Hillary clinton won the state, and you mention the future as far as virginia itself, there have been discussions of other it is a blue state or a red state or a purple state. Ed gless begot more votes than tim kaine or mark warner or bob mcdonald in the gubernatorial race. The Democratic Party campaign got 300,000 campaign more votes more people to the polls than ever before. Fear and loathing on the campaign trail, i think you will see more. It is working for people, scaring them into the polling places because there are unknowns. What will be interesting with tax cuts going in and Companies Offering more jobs in races and more new Companies Getting startup capital, what happens by november 2018 if the economy starts growing faster, i think that is where some of the panic on the far left is, if they are worried their basal find jobs and realize hold it, you told me you are the only ones who could help me before but it seems like i am doing all right now by myself. One of the stories that captured National Attention is going on in the house of delegates whether because of the selection decided by one vote, where does it stand today and if their answer being a republican agreement, what does it look like for the governor . Guest the agreement went into effect seven years ago because for a long time the Virginia House of delegates thanks to harry byrd who also has a statue and a noted segregationist, he had a machine that the Virginia Senate strongly in control of the Democratic Party, that was broken about eight years ago and a plurality was reached they wrote a powersharing agreement between the two parties to set up Committee Chairmanships and everything else. The interesting thing in the there is act race is Court Proceeding that has been requested by the democratic candidate and the judges are not in the United States. They are in on vacation. The General Assembly begins on the 10th and we may not have a resolution until days before hand when the judges look at it. It is a flatfoot tie. Both sides have 1108 votes each for the races. Part of theng Virginia House of delegates, two notes, we were told for a long time that gerrymandering has rendered the seats whoever the nonincumbent is, that was blown seats in roanoke, we saw the reporter who was heinously murdered, run on a strong Second Amendment opposition, a strong dem grab , there were 2200 votes total cast and 2. 1 million spent for each one. You could have sent each one of those voters a healthy check to pay their mortgages or car wrote car loans or student loans. Think about it. 2. 1 million to divvy up 2000 votes. There is something wrong with how much power goes through the seats is it if it is worth that much money to win. Host you watched the governor for the past term. Assess his time in office until you think he goes to larger aspirations . I definitely do. He has been the one member of the clinton political family that has had electoral success on their own. A lot differently than he spoke. His rhetoric is often a lot more to the left them what wound up happening. That has to do with the fact that we had a republican controlled house and senate. It was not vetoproof. He could not just rain with impunity but he signed in an association law. As the Affordable Care act waves goodbye to us and floats off from the shore, we have something here in virginia that a lot of other states which they can withe, where i other broadcasters start a direct primary Care Association and for just pennies of what our off to my health care plans, we made National News for having highest Insurance Premium we canes in the country, say i am opting out and i will join the direct dimeric Care Association. Ralph is coming in, and that is what he brings as far as what he is as far as his positions, what do you think . A relative unknown, not that he did not do good work for constituents but he was not one of those firebrands. When he ran for lieutenant governor, well it is a safe candidacy and he would not challenge teri on a lot of things. Herringumption was mark would run for governor as opposed to running for reelection but without getting too lucky, it will be interesting because rough had a career history of being a guy you could look to across the aisle where every now and again, he did something republican. With a closely divided house and senate, both could be divided by one seat, he will watch a lot of ,owerful single vote members look at Lisa Murkowski or john mccain for those who watch National News, and how much power that one vote has because that vote could change the outcome of a bill. You will see each democrat and republican in the Virginia House and senate has become an immeasurably more powerful for dear dealmaking purposes. So they can get what needs to be legislated for their communities. It will be interesting from that standpoint with such a closely divided house. Host our guest is the host of joe thomas in the morning. Do they have the ability to listen to you even if they dont insure out dont live in charlottesville . Butt they can listen unfortunate some of the National Protest marchers who like to pretend to be in our area like to do online and telephone marches, but you can listen online if you are in virginia. It has been a most year since the events in the city of charlottesville. How are they faring . What happened on august 12 was not involving people from charlottesville. Television than jay leno at that point just to try and let out the point that this was not charlottesville. What i would like to see and what 2017 will drag us back in time with a lot of Court Proceedings, fields will be an interesting case, a plea deal to keep it out and things like that, but as far as the city going forward, it has already just been a little stunned by the behavior of these people because it is not what charlottesville is. It has deep economic problems mainly for the same reason a lot of College Towns do. Make high incomes but do not generate a lot of jobs out of those high incomes. If you run a computer company, you have to hire people if you are a professor at university, you will generate wealth but you are not with a lot of coworkers. Or people that work for you. Service oriented thirdquarter tax sobers that were down again if the Job Opportunities are just who has a better Convenience Store job, thats have our challenges. Charlottesville wants to let those people who came down here protest the city as a march to move on. We have well see how it goes. Fromof them seem to come more of the middle of the road and some of them from either further to the left. Thomas. E thanks for your time. Happy new year. Guest anytime. Never produced income in their lives to think of the workers authorized. And happy morning you new year. Host flo in wyoming. Democrats line. Morning. Caller good morning. Outraged over this trump. Ess to begin with, i think trump is a natural born thief. Actually, i dont think he could to water. K elected by putin,. Herefore hes loyal to putin and they had several objectives. To seal the deal on the estate tax. Penny we get, the middle class gets the wealthy 100. Er we will know how bad off we are couple of years. Theres a few people dont know happening. They are thinking only of the 20 or 200 they are going to get. Dont realize that that we are going to pay for everything thishe wealthy and for little pittance that were. Etting were going to have to pay for the grandchildren and great grandchildren will pay. Host lets go to South Carolina independent line. Hi. Caller good morning. Morning. Ron, lets go next to texas city, texas, democrats. Ine caller yes. Id like to correct the record primarilypeople who listen to thomas on a regular basis in virginia. Cant get basic facts rite. Right. That point of the mess age to washington, ron, what would it be . Caller ok. I wanted to check on something with you, pedro. Washington to follow up on some stuff, systematically [inaudible]. On at theyve been hiring and hiring and hiring. And people have to live on the border. Be able to got to drive to work. So you have a limited group of that you could select from. In addition to that, they have. O be able to speak spanish so that limits your universe to pick from. Eventually you begin to scrape the bottom of the barrel. And whats the indication that you scrape the bottom of the barrel . You got two guys in a patrol car working interstate 10. You know why . So they can get to them in a screwed uper they and they need to call in backups guys,s the Border Patrol where they claimed some mexicans overwhelmed them by throwing them. At host ok. Thats ron in texas. Heres the president on the latest stemming from iran, several dayses of protests by the people there of its government. The president sending out a saying iran is fail ing at every level despite the terrible deal made with them administration, the great iranian people have been oppressed for years, are hungry for food and freedom along with human rights. The wealth of iran is being loot ed. Time for change. He puts that in all capitals. Theres some of the video from that have been going on for the last several days. That, wellow you continue on. When you talk about your message to washington, it could be about foreign policy. It could be about iran. It could be about economics it could be about politics. But for the less than an hour we have in this program, your mess in 2018. Shington missouri is next. Thats where mike is, independent line. O ahead caller good morning, pedro. Happy new year to you and the. Nited states i believe my message to washington would be probably to that is beingney spent by donald trump spending timellion every he goes to maralago. Spent at leaste 24 million in a calendar year this last strip is still not over. Hes probably spent more than 3 million. And i want to know what the Republican People think about the republicans taking people likerom myself, who didnt have a. C. A. Wasuntil the passed, and now i wont have it again because of the greed of. He republicans and i would also like to mention korver who said he corder whote bob said he wouldnt vote for the bill and yet as soon as he got his tax break, he voted for it. My message to washington, i pedro, would be stop the lying in washington. To see tom stier pay for polygraphs for donald accusers. And when they pass, have him do the same thing. Tom steyerr, a a guest on our newsmakers weekend. Ver the if you want to see that interview, halfhour interview with reporters, go to our at cspan. Org and you can find that interview. Only whathings not was happening in 2017, available through our video library. Eye on it, even on 2018, as we progress into the new year. That available at cspan. Org. Florida, erdale, democrats line. Caller hi, pedro. Happy new year to you. You. Thank caller i just want to pass a president. To the he just needs to stop playing and do someto work good deeds for the American People. Ive read that he played between since 79 rounds of golf taking office. That cost taxpayers about reading. On, im and hes tweeted about 460 times. Bout golf he played his first round of golf two weeks after taking office. Needs to go to work and get something done for the American People. And one other thing. Lying. Need to stop the the mostrecent one, outrageous one, is denying the hollywoodf the access tape. Come on. He just needs to get serious about the presidency and go to work for the American People. Thank you, sir. Host the New York Times takes a look on this first day of publishing in the new year about how state leaders are reacting tax cutecently passed law. He writes governors and legislative lead york, cal cool, and other states are considering legal challenges to elements of unfairlyhat they say single out parts of the country. They are looking at ways of raising revenue that arent by the new law and they are considering changing the state tax codes to allow residents to take advantage of other federal tax breaks, in effect, restoring deductions that the tax law scaled back. One proposal would replace state income taxes which are no longer fully deductible under the new law with payroll taxes on employers which are deductible. Another idea would be to allow statents to place their income tax payments with tax deductible charitable contributions to their state governments. Youll find that in the website, in the pages of the new york morning. Is ohio, republican line. This is steve. Ello caller hello. Thank you for taking my call. I want to agree with the democrats but change their definition. Theyre right, there is going to be a wave in 2018. Its going to be a tsunami. And the tsunami is at first will suck all the dirty water out of up of thoseade people who dont get with the trump agenda which the American People voted for. Didnt vote for him to be a saint. They voted for his agenda. To get rid of everybody, and thats Everybody Party isnt going to make a difference it doesnt make a difference anymore. The parties are irrelevant. The democrats have absolutely no message. And those people who call the themselves republicans and dont support that agenda, theyll be out also. So they are absolutely right, the wave thats coming in a tsunami. Dirty watere out and then we replace it with. Lean water host all throughout the morning weve been talking to various columnistsosts, across the United States via skype. One from new york joins us local ly here inned i woulded i our downstairs studio , the founder and of the National Memo. Good morning half. Y new year. Guest good morning. You and everybody watching. Host what is the National Memo . Guest a daily newsletter, a i founded in 2011 focused on politics but we carry other news as well. And opinion. Host so with this idea of mess for washington in 2018, from what you write or at least are interested in, what would be that message or messages . Guest well, i think the message resistance to the Trump Administration and its depth, ingrowing in breadth. Its not going to with a. Its going to get larger. Likely to have a huge impact on politics in the coming. Ear i dont make predictions. I think only people with no sense in my business make predictions because theres the risk that someone will look back and see whether youve got them right or not. But i will predict that that resistance to trump is going to grow and that it will have a big impact. Right now, olling pedro, an enormous preference for democrats in the congressional midterm. The likes of which has not been polls goret of these a long time. Ranging up to 18 over the republicans. At the further edge. Know, 8 is an enormous generic difference between republicans and democrats in the midyear election. Product of the resistance to trump, the success es of that resistance in virginia and alabama, but all over the country. And i think you will see more of that. Thats the message to washington and i think its a message that should heed. You know, im a liberal columnist. Thats no secret. Timeseen on cspan many before. Weve talked about that. Analystses, people who have no partisan acts to grind, are look at the mood of now and areright seeing this. Host ben with that in mind, how do you think democrats should best capitalize on this . Guest well, i think they have point out the shortcomings and abuses of the trump theyveration as continued to do and i think they have to start to pose. Lternatives you know, today, in my hometown, we learned that the trump canceled aion has deal that was supported by christiens like chris and democrats like andrew cuomo and bill beblase yo, mayor of york, to build a new tunnel, a new transhudson tunnel system, repair the hold one. Is so vital to our country s infrastructure. The president has talked about donestructure but he has nothing about it. Democrats really have to come in and say, listen, this is how jobs. Get good this is how we protect the future of the country. And, you know, we stand for this rebuilding the country. The promise the president made his own hometown he has now killed the most important project. Host republicans have said following the passage of the tax cuts that once people start seeing the more money in their and the like that could be a good incentive mess aging wise for them going into 2018. Of thatyou think argument . Guest i think its weak. I think the amounts that will see inricans their paychecks are very small, particularly when you look at monthlya weekly or basis. Dissatisfied,be especially when they recall that the president promised to curb abuses of Companies Like golden sacs and other financial and instead has given them enormous, enormous benefits in addition to that, i think going to wonder, as we have since the beginning of 2016,ign in 2006 how much money the president stands to make from his own tax legislation. We dont know because he has unlike allo refuse, of his predecessors, to release his tax returns. Seen them. We wont see them in april. He will not release his taxes. Extentont know to what he and his family are going to benefit from the tax legislation we havee idea some idea because he scaled back the estate tax which we know them. Enefit and there are benefits to Real Estate Developers in this tax know he and his children can take advantage of. Dont know,ry we and i think peoples suspicions about who benefits from the tax compared to the ordinaryx break that people will get, is going to make a deep impression as it already has. To othern it comes issues, particularly for new located where youre . Hat is of most interest guest i would say infra structure is up there. Rebuild. Ow we have to the National Memo is a National Publish indication so people all read it. Country we have writers from all over the country. Athink the Opioid Crisis is huge problem for people in this country. Again, this is something the to deal with. Ised he has failed so far to do substance about it which is part of a broader failure on the part of this administration to deal with healthcare issues. They did not come in with a better substitute for obamacare or any real substitute for obamacare except to deprive people of coverage. Theyve done nothing about the Opioid Crisis. The other day, and this is something im sure people all the country care about a great deal, he got rid of the hiv aids counsel sill council. Them all. Why . Because he has no policy to deal with that. Its been a bipartisan policy for years in this country to stem the aids crisis. Fire long time now its looked least approached turning a corner on that, with a by of funding provided president george w. Bush with the support of democrats, including president clinton and others, and now the Trump Administration seems to be just that, terested in abandoning that. A very dangerous policy because aids could easily come back as a in this country to accompany the opioid issue, which is now spreading. Working class white communities. It is spreading into minority urbanities as well, communities. The fact that they have done that afteraddress many promises from the president is dismaying i think to a lot of people. Host in light of the election to 2020, and looking who do you see as the future of the democratic leadership, potential 2020 a lead when it comes to the side, a challenger for donald trump . Guest youre asking me to make i dont do that. Host let me ask you, who do you like . Who do you think has the strong take that on guest i think there are a number of democrats who are , have promising potential. Is one who i have admired for a long time. Elizabeth warren certainly has a and a in the Party Following in the party and a strong message. There are several patrick is another democrat i think people will look at. Of my stategovernor , andrew cuomo, is a potential candidate for president with a strong record. T home and an image as a moderate although i think hes governed more as a progressive on many issues. I think as the previous guest , the post from virginia, i think terry mccaulive may well consider running. I think he surprised a lot of people in his role of governor the depth andth seriousness that he brought to that job. Aople thought of him as fundraiser. I know him. He has always been a much more serious and sort of centered politician than a. Undraiser. That but there are a whole host of potential candidates. Is another one who showed a lot. People. Think to shes from the countrys biggest state. You have to take somebody if theyy like that decide they want to look at the president ial run. Governor mack cawley mccauliffe said hes interested . Guest he has not. He knows better than that. Host looking at the senate, you mentioned the host of people. Kirsten gillibrand came into the news several weeks now because her work on Sexual Harassment what do you think about the long term impact that will have on congress . Guest well, i think, first of all, senator jill brands work on Sexual Harassment has been laudable, in the military particularly, but i think certainly i think she would say, and i think many other members, male and female, would say that the record of congress on these good, particularly with respect to its own practice s and that they need to be reformed. Im hopeful that senator jill brand and others, both the house will lead ane, effort to bring about real change. That members idea of congress are using public pay off, basically, people who have accused them of oute kinds of abuses is an rage. And i hope that thats a everybody view that agrees it is wrong for members misuse publicy to funds in that way. So that would be the beginning review of these practices. Another thing that needs to be both in congress and in the broader society, is to stop nondisclosure agreements to prevent people from knowing what has happened. Caseis particularly the with respect to congress where i governed, neede to know what those who are governing us have been doing the our money, with employees who we hire to serve them and to serve us. Has to be changed. Thatnow, i think i hope in the coming year we will see faltering in the effort to make these reforms and change the way women are treated in our country. Host our guest joins from us our studio here inned i woulded here inned i woulded i would, covers national politics, talked about issues of new york. Question. We saw the last couple of weeks or at least the last week or so, video about Hillary Clinton. Reaction. Ot of first of all, tell me your thought of that. And you may have to explain a little for the viewers. Also, what do you think about the role that Hillary Clinton plays now . Guest well, you know, i wrote a book last year about president. Linton and his post presidency as part of that effort, working on that book for quite a while, him. Veled with i spent a lot of time around him i know what he has done. Spent some time with secretary clinton as well. She was kind enough to let me her. View ive followed her career for a long time. And i think the disrespect that was heaped on her by the staff gavenity fair who champagne tests on that vili video, taking up knitting, were absurd and made them look like fools. The twitter reaction was predict people would say she doesnt deserve this kind of disrespect. Her r you think about you know, and my feelings about the accumulations laid against made very clear for years. She was the first female candidate for president running against great odds, coming after a democratic president , with all the innuendo years her over the i think frankly by the time the video came out, they had had enough of that. They didnt want to here that anymore. She has started a pack. A role she hopes to play in the resistance, as i was mentioning before. I dont think she expects to be in the sense of somebody who is going to run for office again. Forthrightlyd very that thats not her intention. But shes a person of great intellectual gift and who cares a lot about our country. With her, disagree with her ive disagreed with her many times in the past i going to continue to care and to tell us what shes. Hinking nationalmemooson,. Com is the website if you want want to read the mr. Conason and others. Happy new year you. Guest thank you. Happy new year. Phones. Ck to this is eva from indiana, independent line. Caller yes. Number one, i think we should wait to see what the president does before we shut. Im down i dont know what president so wait until he does something. Second, i want to draw attention , i wasy, 73 years ago starving to death and freezing death in ash visits. Auschwitz. Silenced. Was so as i hear about the iranian , im trying to ask my [inaudible]. Ns freedom for the iranian people. I have lived under oppression and i do know what it means to freedom. Host thank you. Velma is in new jersey. Emocrats line caller yes. You know what . Trump. Sick of donald he is a liar. And you know what . Another thing . The people vote all of these republicans in there. They can vote them out. Its time for American People to get off their behinds and vote of these republicans out. There making a mess out of government. And donald trump, he need to go, period. Hes a big liar. Host mike is in illinois, independent line. Mike. Go ahead. Caller hey, thanks for taking my call. Pedro. Ew year, i got a couple of things here. Know, people have to start spentering that obama 11 trillion when he was in office. I dont know where the hell that went. And he used to go golfing on. Eekends and weekdays outsourcing, who started the out sourcing . The democrats. How did that work out . Put millions of people out of work. Of people on food stamps. And into poverty. State, you got a blue state. And the people that are on welfare, they get just as much money in a red state as they do a blue state you but host but your message to washington in a sentence, what would it be . Guest say that again . Host your message to washington in a sentence, what would it be . Guest what would it be . To clean up the zoj and the fbi d. O. J. And fbi and stop this because nobody believes whats going on. If the democrats keep this on, theyreg going going to lose by a land diagnose slide. Landslide. Host ok. Democrats line from minnesota. Your message to washington this year . Caller good morning. Happy new year, america. My message to the republicans in washington would be to stop lying like everybody else is calling in this morning. That maybe the Russian Investigation would probably ust if trump would just show the tax returns. Host why do you think what do you think republicans are lying about . I think trump alone, i think hes up to like, what, 2,000 lies since he office . Politifacts has obama lying 18 times in many his eightyear term. I cant trust anything that comes from washington, honestly. And a message for the democrats well, in washington. You really need to get it together because the resistance, like your last speaker was saying, is growing by the numbers every day. Pull the democrats through this next election. To pull itt need together because were backing them by the thousands, by the actually. Host atlanta, georgia, republican line. Derr. S hello. Caller hi there. Boy, are we confused this morning. Knowingt find me even what a republican line is. A liberal independent think ing person. I got to tune into your clapper man,h that that dedicated his life to serving this country. And the key thing he said was what you do when youre in lead ership position is you watch out for some intellect among the that bring you that you bring onboard and then you spark them to use their to help change things. How do all of you bigots feel now . Looking around . Are things going well for you . Senate with ar prayer. You . That working for doesnt that tell you, hey, kids , dont use your intellect, do what the bible says. Study about knowing anything. Just do what the bible says. Its horrible. Host so your question, message to washington would be . Caller look around. Look around. Think . You how is it coming along for you . What about changing your stupide towards basic stuff. Host ok. A guest from atlanta, georgia, talking about a message to washington in 2018. A talk show host based out of iowa joining us on skype. Good morning. Happy new year. Guest happy new year. Good morning. How are you . Well, thank you. As far as messages for 2018, what would deliver . Guest i think its going to be Election Year, pedro. When you look at the economic thecators, Economic Growth, vast majority, super majority of americans are about to get a tax cut. When you look at unemployment continues to go down and when you have low unemployment and growing, that means businesses will be hiring. If businesses are hiring, that means wages are going up. Consumer confidence is the highest its been since the dot com boom. Thosen you look at all of indicators, theyre in the favor of the party in power which is the Republican Party. Trumps you look at approval numbers, those are like sub terrainian. So i think were going to find november just how much people really vote on how much toy like somebody as opposed how much they like their situation because the metrics are in the republicans favor approval numbers certain ly favor the democrats. I think this tug of war, with aboutrty wanting to talk personalities and the another party wanting to talk about the economy, i think its going to very, very nasty 2018 , maybe even nastier than the last couple of years. Message, therefore, is to the people in washington, while youre there ripping each other s spleens out, remember everybody else that lives out here in what you like to call juster country that really want to be able to afford college for their kids, want to be able to afford their mortgages, want to be able to a mortgage, and just want to have access to the American Dream while you guys are trying tonights contrived news cycle on cable news. Host so as far as a best way forward, then, how would you re recalibrate what youve been see ing and hearing to something along the lines of what you like to see . Guest i think both parties to elizabeth list en wise to listen more to actual bases. I think the Democratic Party has lost a lot of working class americans because, frankly, its that having a war over who gets to use which bathroom is more important than frankly just or about any jobs outside of a few sectors. I think the Republican Party, if you look at the original tax plan they were going to pass out of the house, i called it on my lose the house to the kratz in 2018 act. Absolute unmitigated disaster. The republicans in the senate i think bothg parties need to remember that there is a lot of folks for the democrats to remember there are that arentple bigots because they just want to know their little daughter is targeten she uses the bathroom and really just love the country, love america. And really dont care about your war. Re i think for republicans they need to remember theres a lot whenericans that like it corporations hire them for jobs but need to remember not every is a corporation at the same time. Host would to go then for the and the republicans in the house and senate, welfare re form discussion on the table discussion on the table, a host of other things including what to do about daca, are those things do you see those things actually being resolved especially in an Election Year . Host no. I dont think any of those resolved. Going to be im not sure that the democrats believe unfortunately i think looking at their best path in a return to power simply trump on donald everything. And well see if that works. Because, again, the economic are all in the republicans favor by opposing trump on everything, theyre republicans to claim credit for all of that. Now, pedro, you spent three minutes in washington, so you to messaging, omes the Republican Party ranks well below the French Foreign legion, all right, in terms of accomplishment and victory level so if i were the democrats, i why maybe i might make that kind of calculation but, you know, im not sure how that the democrats already dont have are going to go vote in november on russia, alleged russia collusion, the mueller investigation, and, you whatever antitrump sensationalism cnn concocted tonight. Theyve got to remember people still want you to win their votes. You win their votes by standing their values. Host steve deace from iowa and the host of the steve deace show. Mr. Deace, locally, we talked with another columnist from iowa, particular ly on state matters. New at least the governor currently and her chances for reelection. Guest i think thats almost im possible to predict. Talking about someone that in kim reynolds is largely an unknown to most iowans. Theres not the fan fare about breaking theend are gap there would have been had she won in a standard election. Toing it essentially handed her gives the Democratic Party sort of a populous fervor here in our state. Lot of republicans in the grassroots, particularly among conservatives around the werent huge fans of branstead to begin with. On the other hand, the democrats , really, have both benefited and its been a detriment having such a strong in our former Democratic Senate leader for so many years onthat he kept that Party Message and disciplined. On the other hand, you couldnt two, three, four other democrats of any sort of accomplishment or any sort of id in the state of iowa right now. Its because, again, he was such wellknown figure. Much like nationally, everybody how disliked trump is and its true, nancy pelosi and Chuck Schumer arent exactly the most inspiring figures either. So you cant beat somebody with nobody. The democrats have to come up with a candidate that inspires people. Its pretty thin. Host turning to national ourtics, we talked to previous guest about 2020 and people he sees coming forward as as democratic strong Democratic Candidates to take on on the President Trump. See it . You i know you focus on a lot of different politics, republican and democrat, but as far as lead democraticthat group what do you see . Guest i think the Democratic Party should resist the temptation to jump onboard of a personality. I think they need i think my favoritene of shows from a few years ago is gallactica, the new one. My favorite episode, the command in to the president and writes a number on the board, like 78 or 91,000 or something. He says, you know what this signify . She says, i have no idea. She says, this is how many human are left. Thats why you need to ban abortion. I dont care what your feminist say. S we need people. We might be stranded in space for god knows how long and i theseeople that can pilot ships to save the human race. In other words, he makes it very practical for her. Someone needs to walk into the Party Offices and say , you know, you can debate jihad issue and debate how great iran is and all of this other stuff. Let me write a number down for you. 78,000 votes. We need to come up with a candidate who is capable of winning back those 38,000 voters in those four states 78,000 voters that delivered the presidency to donald trump and find out what are the issues about not whatre are the issues we want them to. The average americans that have been largely voting for us since j. F. K. What do they care about . Thats the question that i think the Democratic Party needs to answer first before it starts names. About host steve, can anybody follow your show even if theyre not located in iowa . Guest you bet. We are nationwide every day on c rtv. Com. You can also follow me on at stevedeace show. You. Thank and happy new year. Guest thank you. Host back to the phone. Here is elizabeth from delaware. Independent line. Were asking you for your mess age to washington in 2018. O ahead host good morning and happy new year to everyone. My message is this. Tsunamigoing to be a all right. Its going to be a tsunami of Democratic Women taking over country in 2018. Trumpians out you there who push the Russian Investigation down to not , remember at the Republican Convention when they took away the sanctions on russia how many republicans were involved in that. The question s, have you all turned russian . That donaldeving russiaas not pushed by when our 17 agencies have that that is true . What we know is a fact, that. Ussia was involved and that means that donald trump must be impeached. Terror to this country. To lose ed america not winning anymore because hes allowing every other country to take over where america was number one, the number one power we are no longer the number one andr thanks to donald trump the russian putin and [indiscernible]. Host california, republican line. We hear from dave next. Caller this obsession with the russian story has been almost pathological on the part of the. Edia my message to the republicans would be dont Pay Attention to polls and dont Pay Attention to the media. I didnt vote for trump. I had trepidation about some of characteristics. But i have to say ive been his Job Performance the economy is doing well and becausebetter, partly of the deregulation on small , the stock market has gone gangbusters, which makes my and the retirement of a lot of other americans a rot more secure than it used to be a lot more secure than it used it to be. Isis has been pretty much crunch. D we have an originalist judge on replacedme court that scalia, which i like because the judges dont interpret the constitution as it was original ly intended. Theyll make it mean whatever it to mean as weve seen over and over here in the 9th Circuit Court of appeals. Is a strong trump supporter of not only the military but the police. Between al at stand Civilized Society and law of the jungle. Obamacare, obamacare was in a death spiral before the individual ended the mandate. And i cant think of anything be more antiamerican than the individual mandate this idealy was founded on the of limited government and. Ndividual freedom host ok. Lets hear from philip in new line. Republican caller yeah. A statement not only to washington but to the nation. Strength is in numbers. The president is bringing back money, businesses, and jobs back to the United States. Following what Andrew Jackson accomplished. But he had a rougher problem with the international bankers. If the American People realize hes doing to flex america s muscle and bring our country, back to this the rest of americas problems will fall into place and be resolved. Thank you. And happy new year to everybody. Host orange, virginia, kathy on line. Mocrats caller hi, pedro. How are you . Host well. You. Caller a simple message. I think and im a democrat, of course. The economy was on a train to recovery as far as i was concern ed before the gop got in and put their hands in the kitty. But they work for us. E pay their salary and i think theyre going to be fired if they dont do their job properly. You. Host what does it mean to do your job properly in your opinion . Kathy hung up. Albert, chicago, illinois, democrats line. Hi, albert. Ahead. Caller good morning. Happy new year cspan. Take issue with two things your last guest said well, one, as far as this thing about the democrats caring more to use what going bathroom more than working class , republicans are the ones who are running around the bills as far as who gets to use what bathrooms. It seems like they are the one getss care more about who to use the bathroom than working class voters. If that wasnt the case, they theset be passing all of culture war bills. Number two, hes talking about is going to be the democrat ic leader, who is going to be running for 2020 on the democratic side, who going to be running for the presidency. The 2008 before election, nobody saw barack president in for 2008. Before the 1992 election nobody saw bill clinton running for the presidency. Early to say who is going to be rung in 2020. Host dont you think theres some type of leadership come to forefront soon depending on how electoral politics work and get . Arlier it seems to caller well, i believe that somebody is going to come to the be toont and it wont long from now. But all of the speculation right now doesnt really make any sense. Somebody is going to come to the forefront and then well know who is going to be the leader of the Democratic Party, who is going to be running. Really after the 2016 election. Who is the new democratic leader going to come to the fore front . Host vaughn from missouri, independent line. Hello. Youre next. Caller how are you doing, pedro you. Fine, thank caller i got a message for the dems. Start makinghem to promises like the republicans ofe promises to rescind all those things that republicans have been doing, like voting right totax cuts and work, like that, and talk to us. Talk to us. Let us know what you stand for. And above all, be honest with yourself and us. And stop being weak. Other thing is, you know , i need to understand who our corporations are in competition with. They keep talking about pay taxesns cant because they need to compete. Compete against who . Seriously . Really dont know because they dont ever say. Stophe other thing is, with the gun control mess. You gave up the argument that selfdefense. If thats true, who doesnt have the right to defend themselves . You need to get off of that. Because thats really turning offer a lot of people. And stop trying to starve those people over there in north korea to death. You take that article that you read, that article that you read replace north thea with the u. S. And read article then and see if we can accept that. Us, whyn accept it for cant we accept it for them . Host the Washington Times that a look at new law kick in as of this first day of the year. New year meansg new laws taking in effect in states across the country in as opioid such addiction and hiking minimum wage states are looking to act issues where congress is still trying to figure out the federal level. Aweh carolina is enacting law that prevents doctors from prescribing more than five days pain pills and seven days after minor surgery meaning forents would need approval refills beyond that. Michigan has a similar law that will take effect. And 20 cities are set to enact minimum wage increases in 2018. Times the washington website. Next, North Carolina on our democrats line. Danny. Caller hi. Good morning, pedro. Appy new year moip thank you. Caller on several occasions ive heard presume. Presume say when he came into inherited a mess. It was a total mess. The economyhas said is doing so well, the stock market is doing so well. . Hat did he inherit and then with all of the s hes cutting, what has that actually done to im prove our economy because basically we were already on came into before he office. Hes saying that he inherited such a gigantic mess. Wanting to know what has he really done to get us on this pathway. Comment with a tax bill. I just really want to know whats in it. Seems like theres more in it than just a tax bill because so many beforeres [inaudible] they were supported. So im kind of worried about billis actually in that simply because everybody wanted a little bit for themselves even get onwould board with it. Thats a concern i have with it. Host i would invite you to go our website, cspan. Org, in the days leading up to the passage of the republican tax plan. Weve spent several days analyzing the details of it and what it means for you, the and the taxpayer. Again, all of that available at our video library. From tennessee independent line,. Ere is sam caller i just wonder how many taxpayers know how many dollars go to subsidize our manufacturing, when the stimulus package went in, there was a power plant built in illinois, 60 miles southeast of it structuralchinese steel. Plant that builds wind durbins in pensacola, North Carolina, 90 of what goes comes china or europe. Looku dont believe me, [indiscernible] running back and forth across is the interstate loads ofg the generators, gearboxes, and other stuff. No truck line called bulldog highway express that all of jacksonhaul out ville, florida to the plant in pensacola. Of them tax dollars how come theyre going to europe and china . Say. S all i got to host next up, beth, dayton, ohio, democrats line. Messages have several for washington. Ok, a democrat won the popular vote. Forw number of voters voted trump but not have many of them are still supporting him. Has made everybody Pay Attention now. The russian interference is not won or lost but the interference of a foreign. Overnment dontth the huge tax cuts go for peoples entitlements, they paid into that. Thats their money. For corporate welfare. Why are we giving tax breaks to who can nowanies drill all over pristine land in alaska . And like that guy just said, all of these corporations are bring in foreign stuff. The money is going elsewhere. Think about it, washington. Were now paying attention. Host kentucky is next. Onthew lives there calling our republican line. Caller yes. A message for the andticians in washington for all the bureaucrats there as well. We the taxpayers here are and the purpose outward. U to face i know originally the president didnt evend states have a domestic policy. Now we have all of this social attempts to change this, change that. Economy in our state is based on federal subsidies. Terrible. We need to change that. Trump promised he would do that expect. s what i host do you think hes going to follow through then . Guest hes trying but theres resistance and there shouldnt be. Host resistance from inside and outside his party . Caller i think that his stillal supporters are with him. I, myself, didnt vote for him attempt topport his change things. We have to change things because. Heyre wrong now host ok. Thats matthew from kentucky. One more talk show host joining way from california. John phillips. Hes a talk show host on kabc. He joins us now. Good morning. Happy new year. Guest good morning. Happy new year. Sit acrosswhere you the United States, a message to washington ored i woulded i would itself . Has been aink 2017 year of tremendous change. For me as a trump supporter, im very happy with a lot of the. Hange thats been going down a lot of these bills, the tax bills that just came forward, was promised to us during the campaign. A promise kept. Were very happy about that. 2018 and sayto that infrastructure needs to be needscare of, immigration to be taken care of, more people ourhe courts who share ideology is something i would like to see happen. Weird toknow, its so see an outsider in the white house. We havent seen that in quite some time. And washington certainly doesnt it. How to react to in 2017 we saw a lot of those. Eople have lots of frustration and i think 2018 will be very similar to that. Nd i think thats a good thing host we heard from other people throughout the morning about fellow republicans not only trump. How go you think they are do you think they are as far as andorting President Trump his goals, things he would like to accomplish . Guest i think its an issueby Issue Coalition for him of. This is something we saw during the campaign where voters and see donald trump as a distinctly different brand from party. Ublican the tax bill, for example, i thought was a huge thing for the republicans in congress. To have some sort of big legislative victory if they retain control of the senate in the house. I think they got that whether people get their taxes back this theyll be happier. I think that some of those bad numbers that were seeing will rebound. Trump, its different. Because this is a tax bill that broughtney could have to us, that john mccain or george w. Bush could have brought to us. Him from thes republicans in congress is his position on trade, immigration, really thinkso i that the important thing for wall on immigration , trade, not getting us involved in foreign wars. If he can stick to that hell keep his people happy. And i think the republicans just got a great gift with this tax the that will help him in midterms. Host do you think that momentum midtermven with a election coming up later this year . As badi dont think its for republicans as people think. There are a bunch of competitive races in Orange County, from. Rnia, where im i write the state and local politics column for the Orange County register. Those races just arent competitive that people nationally are thinking, for mimi walters could lose reelection. Well, theres no way mimi reelection. Lose there are republicans in that part 69 country that never real trump butup to they didnt like him for a whole host of reasons. They didnt like the language used. E they thoughts that he was a feau x conservative, that would govern as a liberal and not as someone who shared their ideological believes. Beliefs. So you saw those numbers in a president ial election with high reelected. I dont think there are as many competitive seats right now as democrats would like to think. Host you will see it a governor s race in california this year. Who are the frontrunners as they right now . Guest right now Gavin Newsome leads the polls. We have a screwy system here in california where its the top two people regardless of party ballot. To the november in recent polls, former mayor of rigossa hasantonio been coming in second. There are a couple of whoblicans in the race havent been able to break into two. Op i would submit you this morning that the field has not quite gelled. I would notten surprised not be surprised if other names jump this race. There isnt a highprofile female candidate. We have the former superintendent of public instruction here but she hasnt been able to really breakthrough polls. Of the there is some chatter, like here in the city where im sitting palm springs, california, that this weekend congresswoman Jackie Speier is with advisors about potentially running for governor 6 california. She would be viable and that would shake up the race c. E. O. Ofn, former hewlettpackard, recently stepped down, speculation shes advisorso political and could jump in. See that deck getting shuffled. Host were running out of time. I do want to ask you about new come into effect as of today. One of them deal with marijuana in your state. What happens . Guest well, that remains to be seen. Weve seen colorado and other deal with legal pot with some degree of success and some degree of failure. The state of california has beenthing that discussed. The proof will be in the pudding outee if they can roll this in any rational way. Ideologically im in favor of however,g marijuana practically speaking, there are going to be a lot of bumps in the road and i suspect well see california. E in host our guest is the host of kabc790 in los angeles. Tell us about the show.
