Weve heard from Vice President elect Kamala Harris on schools. Its been such a big issue with schools closing, reopening, sometimes closing again due to the covid numbers. She talked about what the Biden Harris Administration approach will be to getting kids back in the classroom. Every parent wants their kid to go back to school. Every teacher wants to educate those children. Every Community Benefits from those children getting an education, so there is wide consensus about the priority and the goal, and then we have to bring everyone together around how we achieve that in a way that is smart, and smart is about prioritizing the safety of our children and their teachers and their families and their communities beand prioritizing e safety of our children. And because of the pandemic the latest surge, available icu beds are getting dangerously low and soon new statewide stayathome orders could take effect. Reporter it would be no more outdoor or indoor dining, only takeout and delivery and among the other proposed restrictions, marcus, much reduced capacity inside stores down to 20 . This only happens, this threeweek stayathome order, if the icu bed capacity in your specific county dips below 15 . Here in Alameda County the Health Department is already saying they might put this stayathome order into effect before that happens, again, to preserve the icu bed capacity and to save lives. Here is where the bay area stands. Most counties are covering at 30 icu bed capacity. Santa clara county is at 17 . Sonoma county is less than 1 capacity, only has three icu beds remaining. Governor newsom broke the state down into five regions when he made this announcement yesterday. You have the bay area, northern california, greater sacramento, san joaquin valley. The bay area includes santa cruz county. The governor says some regions could get shut down in just a day or two. We have no choice, frankly. We tried to press lightly on the brake, on that emergency brake. I think theyre pressing a little bit hard now because we cannot keep up so far with what were preventing which is flooding the capacity to care for patients. If thats the case ill probably have to lay off most of my people again, and its christmastime. It is no fun for them or anybody. The situation seems dire. These Small Businesses arent the problem. Outdoor dining isnt the issue. Its the people acting a fool out there that arent taking care of themselves and the people close to them. Reporter take a look at your tv screen. At least 205,000 cases were reported yesterday narrowly topping the previous high, a new record of 2,802 deaths reported. 25 more than the record set one day prior. California reported more than 18,000 new cases yesterday and sadly an additional 113 people died. And with the problem getting stronger by the day parents are asking if it will be safe for their children to return to school. Right now only pfizers vaccine is involved in Clinical Trials with teenagers. Kaiser permanente is a participant. Now we asked one 15yearold and his legal guardian if they would be comfortable with the vaccine when it gets the green light. I would like to take it. I dont know if its going to work. I dont know what the down side of it could be. If pfizers trials are successful older teenagers may start getting the vaccination by next march. Only after that point will they have a full fledged return to schools if that will be possible. San jose businesses now pleading with city leaders to help them keep afloat during the pandemic. 55 businesses are asking for a relief plan. They say it would help save downtown san jose including more city backed grants and tax relief programs. They will have to review some of those recommendations. New this morning at least some bay area businesses have been resilient during the pandemic. A new report from bank of america looked at over 1,000 Small Businesses nationwide and some 300 here in the bay area. It found almost nine of ten bay area businesses have been able to stay open. More than half of those that have stayed open have reinvented themselves to stay afloat. The department of justice is suing facebook saying the Menlo Park Company sets aside hundreds of jobs for foreigners. Jobs that should have gone to americans. Police officers responded to reports of a man and that man told officers dozens of people were being held hostage in a house. The move would also wipe away some drug related convictions. California legalized recreational pot back in 2016. The house passed a bill banning private ownership or trading of big cats including tigers, lions and leopards. As the race for a vaccine continues, a crucial deadline is looming for states across the nation. State leaders must decide who will be first to receive the first doses of the vaccine when they become available. Today in the bays Cierra Johnson live in San Francisco with more on that and dr. Anthony fauci talking with nbc about the vaccine and of course the surge in numbers, cierra. Reporter good morning, yes, those numbers are a concern. Well get to what dr. Fauci had to say. Today is the deadline for each state to submit a request for doses of that vaccine being produced by pfizer and also specify where they need to be shipped. Now state leaders and Health Officials have had some crucial decisions to make this week. Thursday was also the deadline to decide who will be the first to get the vaccine when it becomes available. It appears the majority of the states are following the guidelines adopted by the cdc in placing Health Care Workers and those in Nursing Homes at the top of their list. And these deadlines come as numbers in the United States continue to climb with the nation reaching that milestone of 14 million covid cases on thursday. Just moments ago dr. Anthony fauci sat down with Savannah Guthrie on the today show to talk about the numbers and the surge were seeing right now. He says this surge is expected to continue in the next couple of weeks as those numbers we are seeing today do not yet include the cases from folks getting together and traveling, gathering during the thanksgiving holiday. Take a listen. We dont expect to see the full brunt of it between two and three weeks following the thanksgiving, so i think we have not yet seen the postthanksgiving peak. Thats the concerning thing because the numbers, in and of themselves, are alarming. And then you realize it is likely well see more of the surge as we get two to three weeks past the thanksgiving holiday. Reporter dr. Fauci continued by saying everyone will need to be on high alert doing what they can to slow the spread and stay safe as we approach another holiday. He says large crowds need to be avoided going into the Christmas Season and that uniform mask wearing will be key in reducing those numbers. And right now im in front of ucsf just one of seven hospitals in the state of california expected to receive the vaccine first when it becomes available. Theres no denying the latest covid surge is unprecedented and as you can see right here the spike in Santa Clara County really mirrors the one across the state. Cases are higher than they ever were. Its led to some south bay facilities experiencing the firstever outbreaks. Health leaders say amber wood gardens nursing home has more than 150 cases. The vrc homeless shelter has a spike of 60 cases the past week. Residents have been moved to hotel rooms. Due to those rising cases, marcus, a new stayathome order is likely and it could start by mid month. It all hinges on how many icu beds are available in the bay area and surrounding areas. The Supreme Court has ordered a lower federal court to reexamine the states covid restrictions on church services. This comes in the wake of the high court narrowly siding with churches and synagogues in new york, and it means attorneys here will seek an Immediate Court order to allow indoor worship to resume. Some believe the reversal may happen here in california before christmas. Others argue that new yorks ruling sprang from a far different set of circumstances than those in california. The bond fire started from a house fire on wednesday in orange countys silverado canyon. It has exploded in size burning some 6,500 acres. Several communities there have been evacuated and two firefighters injured. They are now in the hospital. The fire is just about 10 contained. Power is also out for 50,000 homes due to high fire danger. Back here in the bay area get ready to pay more money for your power bill. Puc approving a new rate hike set to take effect in march. Average monthly Household Bills will rise 8 or more than 13. Over the year thats 150 or so. Pg e says that the money will go to improvements to help lower wildfire risk. Another staffer in the Governors Office has tested positive for covid. The latest case involves someone working remotely for several weeks who never came into contact with the governor. And once that system moves out i have another concern that we could have a high fire danger as the winds increase. Weve had such dry conditions that we are seeing our vegetation at record dry levels. So were looking at still one more day to enjoy the calm winds and sunshine. Temperatures reaching into the mid to upper 60s across the bay area today. And then once again going into the forecast for the weekend well start to see more clouds moving in by tomorrow. Mostly by tomorrow afternoon there will be some light rain. Notice thats not a whole lot. Thats definitely not what we need to catch up to normal. We are going to see an increase in humidity. Back behind the system the winds may pick up. I wanted to show you the forecast that shows wind speeds in Miles Per Hour and it does show as we go into sunday night into early monday morning, especially in the north bay, we could see winds picking up 30 to 35 miles an hour with the dry vegetation and some low humidity. That is not good because any small sparks could spread rapidly under those conditions. As we look at our Drought Conditions, here in the bay area we have extreme Drought Conditions, meaning the vegetation is dry, theres very low humidity and moisture. As we go into the next several days if you have a high wind, the Drought Conditions will get worse and we could see any new fires starting across the bay area. Thats something well have to monitor as we go into early next week especially on monday and then again possibly next thursday. Vianey, youll be watching that over the week. This happened as they tried to arrest a man wanted in a shooting of a massachusetts state trooper during a traffic stop last month. The marshals shot are expected to survive.
