This morning help for parents and the tools they need during a special live event in studio 1a, today, friday, october 20th, 2023. From nbc news, this is today with Savannah Guthrie and hoda kotb. From studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. Hi, everybody. Good morning. Welcome to today. Nice to have you along with us on a friday morning. It will be an important morning around our studio. We take a whole hour and say lets look at one issue and go in depth. But its really important. This is the issue you and i have been talking about. How do we get our kids off the phone . When do you introduce them to a phone . The best way to police it, all those things. If you have already given your kids a phone, how do you get control over it . The solutions this morning. We will talk about it and get into it in just a bit. We begin with the president s prime time address, calling for support for both israel. New signs that a Ground Invasion is imminent. The countrys defense minister telling troops they will soon see gaza, quote, from the inside. We start with the white house with Gabe Gutierrez. Reporter savannah. Good morning. In just his second oval office address, the president tried to link the wars in israel and ukraine, pleading with americans to be a beacon to the world. The urgent speech coming just hours after the pentagon says a u. S. Warship shot down missiles, potentially headed towards israel. Facing escalating wars in israel and ukraine, President Biden making a direct appeal to the American People in prime time. I know these conflicts can seem far away. It is natural to ask, why does this matter to americans. Reporter the president arguing that helping israel and ukraine in its war against russia is vital to u. S. National security. Hamas and putin represent different threats, but they share this in common. They both want to completely annihilate democracy. Reporter today the president is sending congress a request for 100 billion in military and humanitarian support, largely for ukraine and israel. But congress is paralyzed with no house speaker, so it is not clear when lawmakers will be able to give the money. We cannot and will not let hamas and putin win. I refuse to let that happen. Reporter the address coming just hours after the president s whirlwind trip to israel and amid growing outrage across the arab world over that deadly hospital blast in gaza. Im heart broken by the tragic loss of palestinian life, including an explosion at the hospital in gaza, which was not done by the israelis. We mourn every innocent life lost. Reporter the Biden Administration scrambling to prevent a wider war in the region. The u. S. For the first time shooting down missiles and drones the pentagon says were fired from yemen possibly in the direction of israel by iran backed forces. Syrian militias have also targeted american troops this week while hezbollah has intensified attacks from lebanon. When terrorists dont pay a price for their terror, they cause more chaos and death and more destruction. Reporter the president warned israelis not to be blinded by rage. Can be just learned there was a rocket around baghdad. One was intercepted and one hitn wars an empty storage facility. , sav gabe guterres, thank you for leading us no casualties, savannah. Off. And after ther Gabe Gutierrez at the white in house leading us off. Thank you. Tensive air strikes e even as the president spoke clearing w Israeli Forces intensified on ar gaza, clearing the way for a an major ground offensive. That appears ready to begin at Ground Invasion, and that appears to begin any moment. Richard engel, our chief correspondent, is right there in west bank. Good any moment. Morning Richard Engel is right there in the west bank. Hey, richard. Good morning. , richar reporter good morning. Yes, we are in the west bank. Yes, we are in the city of ramallah, and citizens are city of ramallah. Protesters here to denounce he to renounce israel, and th israel. E peop the people with us here right l hamas, and supporting hamas, and they are shouting that hamas now carrying the green flags are from hamas. They are supporting hamas, shouting that hamas needs to dot more attacks. Nd not just here where the anger is growing, it is not just here where anger is growing, it is across the bue middle east, and it could get more intense as israel prepares for a possible ground offensive. Israel is signaling its long anticipated ground offensive into gaza could be coming. Israeli defense officials visiting troops and telling them they will be seeing gaza soon from the inside. Israel has called up around 360,000 troops, mostly reservists for the ground offensive, expected to focus on northern gaza where hamas militants broke into israel killing 1,400 israelis and killing more than 200 people. The Israeli Military is already attacking gaza from the air with unprecedented force, flattening entire neighborhoods. The Health Ministry in gaza run by hamas says around 4,000 palestinians have been killed so far. A ground assault would be much more deadly risky for Israeli Soldiers and could tip the region into a wider war, which is already expanding. Anger against israel and the United States is spreading across the muslim world. Demonstrations throughout the region today. Our crew in gaza filmed at a hospital after what witnesses say was an israeli strike on a house, where israel told palestinians to go for safety. Overnight, gazas Small Christian Community said it too came under attack where a church where christians were sheltering was hit. The Israeli Military says it did carry out a strike near the church against what it called a hamas command center, and that the church wasnt the target. Pain the growing on both sides of this conflict. Nbcs former israelbased correspondent Martin Fletcher revealing overnight his relatives, americans who were over there visiting his grandmother in israel are hostages. I just found out today two of my wifes family are among the hostages. We know from what we found out about hamas, they were told to kill the difficult ones and use the rest as human shields. So this is a very personal they were last seen their hands tied being dragged away by the d away by the hama hamas terrorists. Reporter many of these s te reporter many of the demonstrators are now marching terrorists are toward israeli troops. Marching the demonstrators in the clashes and they are also going to be a significant announcement that in their estimation most of the hostages could see clashes. Captured ar a significant announcement e stl saying that in their estimation, most of the hostages captured by hamas are still alive. Hoda . All right. Richard engel for us. Thank you. President biden is pushing for more aid to the region without a speaker of the house, congress is unable to consider it. Pe that is true. Than you, ri there he is new chaos and drama as congressman jim jordan is ch. And without a speake expected to try for the gavel for a third time. At this hour, the votes dont seem to be there. Garrett haake on that story. Garrett, good morning. Reporter here we go again. House republicans will start that third speaker vote any minute now after going in and out possibly contentious meetings and watching their backup plan to jordan just fall apart. Jordan and his allied planned to give the temporary speaker Patrick Mchenry more power yesterday and let the house get back to functioning and give jordan more time to find votes. But furious conservatives, including jordans own allies shot that plan down with mchenry threatening to resign at one point citing constitutional concerns. Some of the 22 republicans who have been voting against him say theyre receiving Death Threats for refusing to support him, and they will not bow to bullying. For the hardright ohio republican, the options are now basically drop out or keep voting, and he says he plans to keep trying. But he has no new strategy to win over his skeptics on this the 17th day without a speaker. But pass ang aid package is probably the most you werent thing they have do, but they cant do anything else until they elect a speaker. They want to pass the funding package if they want to avoid a thanksgiving shutdown. Theyve done no work on that whatsoever, and there are other priorities too including passing more money for Disaster Relief and shoring up some pandemicera child care programs that have lost funding. The house cant do any of those things without a speaker. Do any of that without today they will try again. Savannah . A all right, garrett. I know youll be watching. Speak, and they are no closer to electing one today thank you, garrett. And now, new thank you very much. New developments in the case of that american soldier who crossed the border into north korea and was detained there for months now the army is charging him with desertion Stephanie Gosk is here with me good morning. The department of defense reiterated that his wellbeing and safe return to american soil was their top priority now, less than a month since his return, king is facing serious charges from the u. S. Military this morning, new consequences for the american soldier who returned home last month after causing an International Incident when he fled into north korea. Travis king, the 23yearold active duty soldier spent two months in north korean captivity after bolting across the border in july. He is charged by the u. S. Military with desertion. Documents show eight counts the others involving child pornography and striking other military personnel his sprint across the border came shortly after his release from a south korean prison where he served 48 days on charges that he damaged property he was due to fly back to the u. S. While he bolted on a private group tour of the heavily fortified Demilitarized Zone separating north and south. Unlike cases of prisoners held in north korea, king was released without any u. S. Concessions. It is not what we normally expect of north korea. In the end they interrogated him and understood the circumstances under which we left and thought, we dont want him in the country so they let him go. Little is known about how king was treated in north korea. As he waits now on pretrial confinement in texas, his mother released a statement pleading, i ask that my son be afforded the presumption of innocence up until his announcement of charges, king had been receiving medical treatment at joint base san antonio where he was undergoing reintegration procedures. Much more to get to craig joins us this morning. Good morning to you as well. This morning were following an Unexpected Development in one of the legal cases against donald trump. One of his former attorneys changing her plea to guilty. Admitting her role in an effort to overturn the results of the 2020 election in georgia nbcs senior Legal Correspondent laura jared is here with more. Laura jarrett, good morning. For the first time in any criminal cases the former president cases, prosecutors now managed to flip someone closely involved in his efforts to stay in off after he lost the last election this morning one of Donald Trumps fiercest defenders now a witness against him in georgia. How do you plead conspiracy to commit . Guilty. Reporter sitting in Court Thursday admitting to her role in trying to overturn the 2020 election results, the second person to plead guilty against the former president and more than a dozen others. Here to testify truthfully against any and all codefendants in this manner and any upcoming proceedings. Reporter that testimony potentially explosive as she outlines key dates she met with trump as a member of his legal team, including a december 2020 showdown in the oval office where he waived seizing votingns machines the former president floated naming her as special counsel to investigate voter fraud as testimony reveals he privately dismissed her Election Fraud claims as, quote, crazy. What we are really dealing with here and uncovering more by the day is the massive influence of communists money through venezuela, cuba and likely china. Reporter powell routinely pushing such wild conspiracy theories about the election on tv. Im going to release the kraken. Reporter she didnt. Instead admitting in open court she helped orchestrate a brazen breach after the election, forced to now apologize to the voters of georgia and hand over documents as this plea deal of prosecutors. The terms of that deal not lost. You dont get six years probation and no jail time because you dont have good information. Well, so how much of an effect might this guilty plea have on the president s case the issue is the former president s defense team doesnt know where she will go with this theyre counting this as favorable to their defense we know she has to testify truthfully or she does not get the benefits of this deal. By the way, she has to testify not only against the former president. Her former client, she also has to testify against everybody else, including Rudy Giuliani and the others. If they call her to testify she could supply evidence, not just testimony. She is forced as a part of this deal to hand over documents to prosecutors. Laura, thank you. Lets go to the nfl now. Late game drama. The jags and the saints were all knotted up at 24 each until this happened lawrence fires. Thats caught on the run Christian Kirk inside the 20 he goes. And it is coming from the pop stars perspective as more details emerge from her eagerly awaited memoir good morning. Well, this book is getting a lot of buzz, and everyone seems to be talking about it. The 275page memoir, a copy of which the New York Times was able to review, the 41yearold pop icon talks about everything from her rise to superstardom, her relationship with the press and that conservatorship where she said she was powerless to make her decisions okay, guys. So my book, the woman in me is coming out october 24th. Her personal accounting from teen pop sensation. Reporter this is britney sp spears personal accounting. Hit me baby one more time to the horrors she says she endured. From 2008 to 2021, her father jaime was put in charge of her affairs. During that time, spears describes a life of controlled manipulation too sick to choose my own boyfriend and yet somehow healthy enough to appear on sitcoms and morning shows and completely devoid of choice. They put Parental Controls on my iphone everything was scrutinized and controlled, everything of her father she writes, he saw me as put on the earth for no other reason than to help their cash flow. In addition to the bombshell news of her pregnancy and abortion with then boyfriend Justin Timberlake, spears add contexts to their breakup that spears said she was devastated yet, portrayed by the media as a harlot, while she was comatose in indiana and he was happily running around hollywood spears said she was forced into an illfated interview with diane sawyer where she felt exploited, set up in front of the whole world. You broke his heart you did something that caused him so much pain, so much suffering. What did you do . According to the times, that interview, spears says, was a breaking point she also says that her portrayal as a party girl was overblown. It was never as wild as the press made it out to be. But she didnt like hard drugs and never had a drinking problem. Spears shares insights into her mental state during her most erratic behavior in the throws of severe postpartum depression, abandonment by my husband, the death of my adored aunt sandra and the constant pressure from paparazzi, i began to think in some ways like a child now this memoir, spears says, i all about a finding of the woman in here. Now, jaime spears declined to comment. And People Magazine is now reporting that Justin Timberlake is happy at home with kids and his wife jessica biel and focusing on new music. Do we know what could be next for Britney Spears so many of her fans have been wanting new music from Britney Spears and for her to go back on tour but she says right now it is about healing. She says she suffers from intense migraines. It is about possibly healing wounds with maybe her mother, her sister she also says that rather it is time for her to actually find herself. So no new music on the horizon but, remember, she did put that song out with elton john not too long ago there is always a glimmer of hope there. Thank you. Back now at 7 39 big news impacting millions of home buyers and sellers. Just this week, the average Mortgage Rate in this country oa stunning 8 . Here to break it all down is nbcs vicky nguyen good morning if you are looking to buy or sell a house with Mortgage Rates at these historic highs, what do you do 8 is not great for buyers. It is obvious why. But 70 of people that sell a home become a buyer, too lets say you bought a home for 300,000 two years ago your mortgage was about 1,000 now it is 1,700 the one bright spot on the horizon, the National Association of retailers is saying that by the end of 2024 we could see rates drop to 6 . Okay. So what goes up must come down should we be waiting until 2024 to buy that is a great question and one where you need to look at whats happening right now do you have a great rental rate per month and will you be diligent in saving towards a down payment for the next year and a half yeah, go ahead and wait. Stacy heads other own reality group. Shes bullish on buying because Real Estate Agents say it is tricky to time the market. If you were waiting for rates to drop two years ago, you would be kicking yourself right now because home prices havent gone down either. But look at your Monthly Payment. Can you comfortably afford the home you want with an Emergency Fund with a 20 down payment instead of freaking out about the rate, think about that number. So if you have to move then, you dont have a choice, you have to buy something now, how can you reduce that Monthly Payment . How can you bring that down . You should make a list of musthaves versus wants. You might want a home gym. Dont compromise on where your home is located. You can always switch out the tile in the bathroom, not where it is located. Maybe you want your kids to be able to walk to school, hoda. I see that could be very important. How long do you want to stay in that years, five years . Talk to your realtor about these things so they know your priorities, they can streamline this for you. Is it possible you could just refinance . You take the high interest Mortgage Rate and cross your fingers you can refinance later . Thats exactly it, savannah date the rate, marry the house if you have been doing your research and you found the place right for you, lets say rates are 5 , maybe 6 , you can always refinance. Thats important a loan is like any other product. Shop around. You have really good credit or excellent credit, you should be going to a bunch of lenders and saying what can you do for me . You dont have to get a loan through your bank. This is a really important time to explore also consider adjustment rate mortgages that last five or seven or ten years maybe it will adjust down next year if this prediction goes down but you have to be prepared for the scenario if that rate adjusts up as well. Thank you very much. All right. 7 42 mr. Roker, what you got cooking . We got rain coming out here the rain is increasing as the day goes on. Savannah al, all right we are ready to kick off our live event this morning, kids in crisis, screen time. So many parents across the country are talking about it, moms groups, dads groups we will dedicate the rest of the show to it. The videos, the games, the texting, all of it simply put, a lot of children and also, we should say, adults struggled to even put their devices down. Over the next hour, we will address how screens and phones can impact a childs health. The many, many questions parents are facing and hopefully give you some tools, too, to navigate pretty rough waters. We will start with a closer look at exactly what is at stake. I love the escape. Screenager. You want to keep scrolling and scrolling. Im on my phone about ten hours away. Nobody speaks face to face with people anymore. Im just stuck on the phone, and i just cant get off. The average american teen spends 30 years of their life behind the screen. Is social media safe for my kids growing evidence of harms. Social media use may compromise the Mental Health of young people. Endless access. She was pushed content about body image and selfharm. When we think about giving our children smartphones, it is like putting a twoyearold in the front seat of a car. There will be a crash. A new warning about something else, social media this is not the first social media challenge to cause harm or take lives smartphones are almost like a perfect storm. A teenager does not yet have their frontal lobes fully developed to say this might be risky. Like years passed, when everyone was smoking and now we know smoking is not so good for you. Their risk reward system, seeking reward the chemical dopamine is more active in this window. Teens risking their lives for likes . Put a 13yearold in the er. The choking game or blackout challenge. It is unfair in a sense that teenagers have this kind of access at a time where they may not have the ability to fully understand the consequences. These Tech Products want kids to share more, post more, create more stuff because that helps feed that engine it is trying to profile kids to know what might you click on next, what brand can i align you with so when your child gets profiled, thats an unfair battle i just want to like relax a bit before bed so im scrolling and i look at the time im like, oh, my god it is 1 30 you get so sucked in. It can be really addicting. They can begin to hinder your life more than they help it. No, you were watching tv or you were watching tiktok always have that battle. It is really dangerous the algorithms out there. We dont really know how those algorithms will impact the brains of kids i have seen a couple of my friends. It can have lasting effects. Instead of liking yourself, it is how much everybody likes you. My video is not getting as many likes as my friends why are these people not commenting and telling me how pretty i look. It switches into consuming you. You are fearful into whats going to happen . Why am i getting upset with myself i would get so consumed, i had to like delete instagram at one point for like a few months. The most common words they associate, depressed, angry and alone. What i believe is the defining Public Health issue of our time, and that is the youth Mental Health crisis. When you look at the rise of teen depression over time, it coincides with the rise of smartphones and the rise of social media. No one gave me a play book. No one told me or warned me about how my digital habits would impact my Mental Health. It actually almost led me to take my own life you find your child lifeless in her room at 3 30 in the morning. She had a locked note in there. If i can get through it, you can understand what she put. Behind the social media life, nobody knows the real me and how much i have struggled. 57 of children are saying that they hide information from their parents online and in social media parents are trying to swim upstream. Social media makes them feel worse about their body image. Kids who use more than three hours of social media a day face double the risk of depression and anxiety symptoms. I worry about how my daughter is going to think of herself is she going to compare herself with others on social media . Is she going to feel anxiety a case of social media bullying. Increased exposure to cyber bullying. 1 in 5 children say they have experienced bullying. Us as parents, we need to start banning together to hold the social Media Companies accountable. This is an opportunity to teach your child how to thrive with digital technology. Know where it has a time and a place. Wait as long as you can to give your child a phone. When kids did have like iphones and stuff and they had phones, i think they were influenced to be just a kid. The best thing that we can do is give our kids the tools they need to flourish in the digital age. So now you know why were here this hour is really important. Joining us now a pediatrician and codirector of the American Academy of pediatrics center. We also have a psycho therapist and author of disconnected. How to protect your kids from the harmful effects of device dependency. And a family coach. Were glad to have you with us lets start with the science what i really want to talk about is what we dont know. I cant imagine anything else you would hand to your kids and let them have that much access to it, not really knowing the effect its having on a developing brain. There havent been longterm studies. As a clinician and a researcher, i usually tell parent these devices are designed for adults. If you go back to steve jobs first presentation of the iphone, they were so excited to be packing so much stuff into this one device. You could take your life everywhere, but they werent thinking of kids at all. So there has been a lot of reactive resolution or addressing of problems once we discover them. And there is a real reason kids are not little adults. Thats why this feels hard kids have a lot of different stages of developmental and emotional regulation thats occurring through Early Childhood, middle childhood and adolescence where devices can get in the way. The science isnt there there arent great scans of a nineyearold brain. But 60 minutes did do Something Back in 2019 and they found they had some slides of scans of a 9yearold and 10yearolds spending a lot of times on screens, and it showed which more premature thinning of the cortex that processes information from the five senses we wont know for years what is happening to our kids brains, but we know its probably not great. So what where are we at this point when it comes to Brain Development in kids . I think there is so much Cool Research coming out about this, looking at how the brain is responding to different aspects of social media or smartphone use. But youre right you still have this gap in knowledge. So the best thing we can do as caregivers is try to understand what our kids are going through. When you are an adolescent, you are living with this brain sensitive to social rewards and rejection. You have a social lobe still coming online. So it can inhibit all the impulses and emotions you are feeling. That is why it can be a tough mix with social media and smartphones, but it is also why kids are drawn to them. It is a perfect storm other than the first year of life, adolescence is the most significant change that happens in our brains in our life. That brings me to you, tom you were a school counselor. Do you remember the moment when smartphones came on the scene and the impact you saw it happening on the front lines at your school . Ill put it in perspective. I worked in a Public High School from 1995 to 2001. Around 2012, okay, i started noticing this major change taking place so prior to that, occasionally a kid would come down to my office having a panic attack, an anxiety attack of some sort. Starting in 2012, i started getting more kids come to my office and the Nurses Office per week than i used to get per school year. At my private counseling practice, i started getting more referrals for middle age school kids with Anxiety Disorders than i had gotten collectively. Smartphones became mainstream in 2012. From that point on, this problem has escalated and worsened. The problem is a lot of kids got bullied in school back in the day. The kids these days are getting bullied in school, and that bullying comes at home, and then midnight scrolling, and they got lost in this loop. I actually feel helpless sometimes when i think about the kids out there that need us. Part of it is when you look at an adolescent, i call it the purgatory stage, you are not a child, you are not an adult, you are in this middle phase of trying to figure out where you are, thats the feeding ground or selfesteem issues. So i think adolescence is insecurity thats natural and normal. Then you layer in all this feedback theyre getting, and they think its making them feel good when you look at the word self, if you are distracted by the modern day weapons of selfdistraction, how do you know self . How do you know who you are . And how do you have confidence you get a ding on your text message, an alert, a like, whatever with kids and their particular vulnerability they have with this developing brain, it is like, are they getting this high and do you have to keep chasing a bigger and bigger high to change them fundamentally is the question. My latest book, i talk about something i have been seeing a lot of recently called oppositional defiance disorder kids that are just being defiant and oppositional towards their parents, punching holes in the wall, cursing at their parents the common denominator is theyre on these modern day weapons of distraction you dont want to have too much dopamine when that stimuli is removed, the phone, the video game system, you have a crash of withdrawal that manifests itself behaviorally so about 30 days, if we can unplug for 30 days, get a kid to do that, the balance would return. I want to point out, it is not only pleasure seeking. A lot of the way that we as kids and parents is to let our brains take a rest. When we interview kids, they say i have been having a hard day. I need to not think for a while. Im avoiding the next day or my sleep because they are pretty stressed out so understanding that that, too, is a driver, not just this i feel like wating is have gy kid the phone at the Doctors Office because theyre feeling stressed but then you dont ever learn how to regulate your stress because the minute you need a break, the thing is slid right in front of you. Essential in Early Childhood when they need us and play and moving their body to learn how to manage their own emotions whats cool about adolescents is they have abstract thought they want to talk about this i think of it optimistically as when i talk to kids. I have an eighth grader at home. Theyre curious. They want to talk about this they want to be part of the solution if thats one thing parents take away is have conversations. It does feel, catherine, ideal with my own kids theyre only 6 and 9 theyre begging me for a phone already. I talk to my friends who have older kids and they say, we gave in and now our whole relationship is transformed it is only about that phone. It doesnt feel like a fair fight. And parents need help, too. We do we need help because it is we have talked about this amazing computer that does all of these things its hitting their dopamine and all these things but there arent ways that we can help you know, we can limit the hours they use it. We can limit the number of hours they can spend on social media i had to limit my own hours on social media thats important to talk to kids about. It is not just me telling you what you have to do. This is a problem for all of us. We all have to improve. I think some parents are thinking, trying to tell my 15yearold who now, you know, is practically about to drive a car that, hey, you are not going to be able to use this phone between this time and that time doesnt seem realistic. Yeah. But the thing is if we say absolutely you cannot have your phone in your room and we stick to that, pretty quickly they give it up. Yeah. But we can tell when theyre wishy washy and they dig. I got to jump in here real quick. So i did a survey of my own here at the high school i asked the following question to 100 High School Students over the course of that school year that come to my office they say its going to stay confidential here. The question i asked them was what time do you go to sleep on school nights. 92 of those 100 kids said between 1 00 and 4 00 a. M. Every night of the school week and their parents had no idea. Thats because the phone is in the bedroom. Thats the number one tip, get that out of the bedroom. We will keep getting into it. But we want to hold off giving that phone as long as possible im trying to hold on to childhood on behalf of my children well continue the discussion. Thank you to all of our experts. We should mention, we have a wealth of information on today. Com as well. We will hear from teens on the impact on their every day lives. So well continue right afr te we are back with more of our special event kids in crisis screen time. And it is time to hear from the kids themselves. Yeah. How do they feel about their devices and the time they spend on them . Kate snow is here with that part of the story hi, kate. Good morning, guys. By the age of 18, 86 of kids have a smartphone according to Common Sense Media and the u. S. Surgeon general says 95 of teens 13 to 17 are using social media there are a lot of positives, connecting with friends, for example. But there are also real risks. She remembers the moment she joined social media. It was the day of her 10th birthday party. I was someone that grew up heavily bullied and struggled to fit in socially. So when my peers told me there was this app they were downloading to stay connected to each other to expand their social life, i thought if i downloaded it, it would help me fit in, fit in, too. She downloaded instagram and followed a few other students. But when she turned to the explore page, she saw content from accounts she didnt follow. When she started clicking on posts about models and weight loss, she says it took a turn. It went from swap out a candy bar for a carrot to this is how to hide your food, how to avoid eating completely. She says the content helped lead to her eating disorder. She was hospitalized 13 times starting at the age of 15 when her doctor delivered this dire warning. He looked me in the eyes and said the insurance called and asked for your prognosis, and i had to tell them that you are going to die in the next couple of weeks your heart, liver, kidneys, theyre all failing. She made major changes in her life and shes in a healthier place now going to therapy and taking a twoyear break from social media her story is not unique. 46 of teens 13 to 17 said that social media makes them feel worse. Back in may, the u. S. Surgeon general issued a warning calling the youth Mental Health crisis, the defining public issue of our time. We see rates of depression of disease and loneliness going up in young people. Im concerned social media is a driver of that. Teens that spend more than three hours a day on social media face double the risk for Mental Health issues like depression and anxiety and a lot of American Teens are spending more time than that a poll this month found just over half of teens say theyre spending at least four hours a day on social media apps favorite app id probably say like tiktok. Tiktok. Instagram. Yeah, instagram. We have a divide. I sat down with 15yearold elizabeth, 13yearold josiah, 16yearold megan and 17yearold eric at their school outside new york city to learn about their own social media use. What does it look like when you start looking at tiktok. It is just so many funny videos and i just keep scrolling. Im just avoiding Everything Else in my life. I watch tiktok to fall asleep. These teens say they dont use filters when they post on social media, but they see a lot of that. What about your friends i have one friend that uses a filter on every single photo, every single video i dont know what she looks like for real anymore i havent seen her in a long time. How much of your Mental Health is tied to using the phones or screens . Do you see a connection there or not . Not so much now but when i was younger i was more impressionable to what i would say. And i was definitely more down on myself then. What would you see . People like with the filters or people with the unimaginable bodies that are all fake and perfect. And its like, why cant that be me you know most of their parents follow them on social media. My mom does send me a lot of tiktoks, my dad insta reels and stuff. They tell me they have taken steps to have a healthier relationship with their phones megan says last school year she would sneak her phone into her room at night. This year her parents make her hand it over at 9 30. My work wasnt getting done i wasnt getting good sleep because i was scrolling. It seems like scrolling at night is the only free time we have. Thats what it feels like anyway but now that they take my phone, im getting much better sleep. Sophie is a sophomore at stanford and a Mental Health advocate, meeting President Biden last year. She says her relationship with it is different. Social media now is a place of learning. But it is a place where i have to be able to make decisions in order to protect myself and to protect that 10yearold sophie every single day. In the years since her experience, instagram made changes. Meta says they dont allow anyone to encourage or promote eating disorders and they remove content when they see it, when they become aware of it. Nbc news reached out to social Media Companies about Safety Measures for teens snapchat has in app parental tools that allows you to view your teens friends and who they messaged recently. You can restrict sensitive content, report any concerns that you have. Tiktok said they set a onehour daily screen time limit on teens under 18 but the teens can enter a pass code to override that and continue watching. A lot of teens will tell you they know the pass code. Kate, thank you very much. Lets keep the conversation going with a group of parents that understand this battle. And to answer their questions, a relationship therapist who helps families overcome Mental Health challenges, including the challenges of screen time. Shes the author of courageous conversations connect. So what was your wakeup call youre young youre a part of this generation not too long ago when did you realize this was a real problem and what is your message to those out here listening today my wakeup call is when i almost ended my life they asked me about forms of wellness i was spending between 10 and 12 hours a day. My message and what i built is an organization to solve this problem. I believe we need to give kids the tools to have relationships to achieve digital flourishing. A lot of parents give their kids phones because they say i want my kids to be safe. When really what we have seen throughout this hour is the boogie man is inside the phone, not outside the phone. But if you are going to give your kid a phone, what are some things you should do to make your kid a phone, w sure you do it properly . You have to remember, the phone is a powerful tool that you are putting in the hands of your children. It is like putting a twoyearold in the drivers seat and saying drive. Youre going to crash. So the childrens brains arent fully developed. The parents have to guide them just like anything else. So open conversation, not one or done having a conversation, what are you going to do with the phone how are you going to manage the phone . Here are the signs to look for, what are the danger signs. Those are important. Also thinking about, all right, now that you have open communication, the protective factors. Know the codes know the accesses. Know the social media platforms that those kids are on then make sure that you have access your parents are not your friends really at the end of the day, youre the parent your job is to protect them. So have that access. Lets get some of the parents questions. We have wanda who has a 12yearold daughter what is your question . So i seem to find that every time i ask my daughter to put her phone down, it turns into a fight. How can i get her to put her phone away without causing an argument this is such a big issue. Parents say this is the only thing theyre fighting about anymore. Yes wanda and all you other parents, thank you for having that question you are not alone. This is a Community Conversation this is not the individual conversation you guys got to talk to each other. What are you doing with each other and for your daughter or for your sons, find Common Ground there is always going to be Common Ground. Keep the lines of communication open the Common Ground might be, okay, we will stay on the phone less we will have tech free zones. Did that work for you i definitely needed boundaries i didnt know how to have them because my brain was still developing. The boundaries will lead to a fight. I think about this as a parent parenting is hard. Letting it slide is so much easier sometimes you are not in the mood to fight, so you give in. You cant give in. We have diana napier who has a teenager at home she has a question. Hi. Good morning how do you foster open communication with your children so they feel they can come and talk to you if they see something online that makes them feel jealous or scared well, the reality is that tech is very emotional there is so much fear. Were often points and yelling at our kids for being on their devices. But more often than not, i escape through my screen to numb out. The best thing you can do as a parent is to be vulnerable yourself and sit down and hold your teenager because they need that more than you need finger pointing and ask them, social media is making me feel bad about my body lead with curiosity. Ask them not just the bad things but also what really excites you about being in the digital world. Show me because i have no idea what for you page is. So we want to play a clip from project Healthy Minds at an event thats a nonprofit last week there were two parents at an event. Their 14yearold daughter died by suicide they learned she was depressed after opening her own. Tony had a message he wanted to share. Take a listen. One of the things i really want the world to know please know your childrens unlock code. We knew her unlock code. We knew her passwords and everything, but i just didnt know how to navigate through these platforms. Thats it you can set all these rules. But if you dont understand how to use it we keep saying it is not a fair fight. What do you do for parents you have to make space. We talk a lot about boundaries, but we also have to make this fun and bring play and creativity to this a lot of times we say have a screen free Scavenger Hunt parents are the models, just like my other substance. You have to save yourself first. And you said at nighttime lock the phone up. Yeah. I mean, al roker did that with his son he took his kids phone, he put it in a lock box in a safe and said, see you in the morning. Yeah. It may cause a huge todo, but afterwards, they slept that night. They have woken up in the morning and they can start again. Its like create tech free zones and opportunity for talking. Go out and talk. In the car, dont miss the opportunity to get off the screen and be the model for your children because youre creating different culture. It is a wakeup call for all of us. My kids are the first one to say, you are on the screen guess what we can all do better thank you to all of our parents. You can find more answers on today. Com, including the resources she talked about her nonprofit has to offer. All right we will keep it going. Up next, jake ward is here to offer even more Practical Solutions. What you can do today to change the atmosphere around electronics in your house. But, first, this is today on were talking about the impact of screen time now we want to focus, craig, on some solutions. Jacob ward is here. And you can follow along with his tips by scanning the qr code on the screen right now. Lets start with alternatives. Yeah. So we as a family are put in the same position as so many of todays guests trying to figure out with a 12yearold, who do we do. We have a pledge that i helped to pilot that is a pledge we wont give our kids smartphones you cannot be the only one in our case we knew our 12yearold was going to begin making friends at camp, doing sports and giving them my number is not appropriate, so we got them this. We got them a light phone, the dream phone of the 1990s it essentially gives you only talking, text, music. Thats it maps and a calendar and a couple others. Heres the thing, it doesnt have a camera. There is one called gab. There is a couple of them here that are designed to acclimate your kid in a way to the smartphone experience. Over time you can unlock more apps even though the American Academy of pediatrics found that 12 is the average age that kids start to get a phone, that doesnt mean you have to do this we had to get one to create a socially appropriate way for my get to be independent and get around this is what i was comfortable with, a smart watch, this kind of phone, maybe thats the way to go for you. But for us no camera. The Pediatric Academy says 12 what is the real age theyre getting them on average by 15 all kids have a phone in some form the question is what do you do if your kid already has a smartphone there are apps you can get one called bark. One called custodia used to monitor your kids use of the phone. It can filter out gambling sites and porn but you are walking into with this one you are having to have a conversation with your kid saying im monitoring your phone because if you try to sneak around on them, if you monitor their background or monitor where they are in the World Without telling them, that destroys your conversation. Isnt the solution to set up just in your School District a meeting with the other parents to go, hey, were all in this together lets set the standard of the age. No tiktok. Carson, it took me two years to get together with all these parents. I think fundamentally everybody was onboard. Only a couple people were resistant. It took two years of meetings to figure out how to do this. The standard you had to set was high school is the beginning of any smartphone, much less social media. 30 seconds. You cover Silicon Valley. Yeah. A lot of people say Silicon Valley executives dont let their kids have phones. If you look at one of the most recent posts by mark zuckerberg, he blocks their face out. It is no clearer than that that those guys understand what happens in the long term when the hardware, you know, gets into their hands. I think we should follow their lead and maybe adopt something other than the traditional. And we will put all the Additional Information about this. You can find these tips and more by scanning the qr code or to today. Com. Wegor i think we should do this again. I do, too. This is the first of many. It isnt to make people feel bad. It is to say, guys, lets do something about this. We want to thank our friends for helping us with this event. Good morning. 8 56. Im marcus washington.
