kavanaugh. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell already scheduled a key procedure vote for tomorrow and a final vote could come saturday. laura podesta is here in new york with the details. good morning. >> good morning. senators tell cbs news that republicans and democrats will take turns being briefed on the findings. fbi background checks are supposed to remain confidential so barring any leaks it's unclear how much of the report, if any, will be made public. >> the senate will vote for the first time tomorrow on supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh. >> there will be plenty of times to be briefed on the supplemental material before a friday vote. >> a confirmation vote could happen as early as saturday. the move comes shortly after the fbi completed it's accusation into sexual misconduct allegations into kavanaugh. he tweeted earlier this morning that after examining the probe the white house is confident that the senate will vote to confirm judge kavanaugh to the supreme court. senators will view the findings for the first time today. >> you guys take tons -- >> we're not managing anything. >> the white house pushed back when asked if they were limiting the scope of the investigation. >> brett and mark came into the bedroom and locked the door behind them. >> the fbi interviewed mark judge, leyland keyser and patrick smyth. the people christine blasey ford says were at the house the night she was assaulted. they also talked to timmy and squi from his high school calendar. those directing the fbi investigation were not interested in seeking the truth. and president trump continues to throw his support behind his supreme court nominee. last night he tweeted, he is a fine man and great intellect. anne-marie. >> laura podesta. thank you so much. a south carolina police officer was killed and six other officers were wounded in a shoot out with a man holding children hostage. the trouble began when the officer tried to serve a warrant at a home in an upscale neighborhood northstern a n inside opened fire. that lead to a two-hour standoff. the dead officer was a 30 year veteran of the florence police force. the children were rescued unharmed. kenneth craig reports. >> the tragedy unfolded wednesday evening in florence, south carolina. >> we lost a good friend of mine. an officer that i have known for 30 years. >> officers were trying to execute a search warrant at a home in the vicinity of vincent drive and hoffmire road. as they approached the house someone opened fire at them. >> these officers, unknowing of the fire power the suspect had. and again, they thought it was a random search warrant. >> within minutes three sheriffs deputies and four city police officers was shot. an officer from the city has been pronounced dead. the conditions of the others were not made public. >> fire was being shot all over. the way the suspect was posit n positioned, his view to fire was several hundred yards. so he had an advantage, and the officers couldn't get to the ones that were down. >> about two hours after it began the florence county emergency management agency declared the active shooting situation over saying the suspect had surrendered following a standoff with police. kenneth craig, cbs news, new york. >> a navy veteran in utah is under arrest in connection with suspicious envelopes sent to the pentagon and president trump. william clyde allen is expected to be charged next week. two envelopes expected to contain ricin were later found to contain castor seeds. one was addressed to jim mattis and another to a navy top officer. details have not been released. >> texas officials are trying to figure out the cause of a deadly school bus crash. the bus drove into a ditch yesterday afternoon. there were 38 other students on the bus coming from a middle school in mesquite. a power line was hit by the bus and a fire was started. civilians joined police and fire crews to help rescue the children. tennessee officials say they may have rn cocornered a suspect wa for murdering two people. kirby wallace may have been cited in a field northwest of nashville. he's been on the run for nearly two weeks now. he's suspected of killing a woman at her home and a man while stealing his truck. wallace is considered armed and dangerous. area residents are on edge. >> what's happening. you never know if you're going to wake up -- i go out every morning. i escorted my wife out with a gun to her car. we're not living normal lives at that point. >> police say wallace also stopped an 80-year-old woman at knife point and forced her into her home and then stole her car. wallace is wanted on charges of first-degree murder, felony murder, aggravated larson and aggravated kidnapping. >> overseas now, rescue crews now reached all the areas effected by last week's massive earthquake and tsunami. this is drone video of a village. it was wiped off the map and swallowed by soil that appears almost ly liquified. 500 people live there. more than 70,000 are homeless. there's shortages of gas, water, and other essentials. the trump administrations effort to end a program that allows immigrants to live and work in the u.s. was blocked by a federal judge. temporary protected status is granted to immigrants from countries ravaged by war or natural disaster. until the situation improves in their homeland. in this case, sudan, nicaragua, haiti and el salvador. in his ruling, judge edward chen said president trump harbors an aminmous against non-white aliens. >> coming up,
