That is the big cleanup. That is why northbound 680 is closed. So it youre in the area, you need to take an alternative route. So if you can avoid 680 all together, that would be great. Stay on 580 over to casser valley on to 238 and jump on 880 to go to your destination. Reporter if youre driving on southbound 580. There is typically a lot more traffic in the Early Morning hours. And people are bottlenecking, they are backing up traffic. So if youre headed on 680, youll be diverted on mission boulevard. And this is niles canyon road. And it gets backed up as well. So theyre asking everyone to take northbound 880. Big rig jackknifed. A fuel tanker hit it second later. And 3800 gallons of fuel has to be cleaned up. It is going to make for a long day and a messy commute. And we asked how this all and happened. Is it unclear how the initial crash happened. The weather could have played a factor. I know youve been trying to find a better way to get around. But 680 is a workhorse. Yes. People are using other ways and trying to, anyway. People have heard about this on mission boulevard and 680. You heard the officer say, northbound traffic is a mess. That is not the typical commute direction. But that is a mess and that will be a big surprise for a lot of people. Southbound, this commute is ruined. Dublin down pleasanton. Look at this. This is one of these commutes that you are going to have a big issue with trying to get out of pleasanto in and the east bay. It is very slow. We have other problems. Santa cruz mountain. They just cleaned up and accident there. Westbound 880 is slow. 37 is taking it a beating and so is 80 and the bay bridge is backed up. The first rain of the season has caused slow traffic or correlated with this bad commute. Yes, sir. Im not surprised. And the system is Holding Together. And now the cooler unstable air is coming in. If youre getting a break in the sun, i would expect the cloud cover to build up. The first rain of the season has arrived. And the calls of the fire is still being investigated. One person is dead and four san jose firefighters are hurt after a re at a downtown shopping center. It heavily damaged a business on santa clara street. They believe it may have been intentionally set. It spread from an adult bookstore to a market next door. Someone threatened to burn down the building. The fire crews did not go to the bookstore fearing the man would attack them with the sledgehammer. We did, after the fire was under control, find a body until the basement. We dont know if that was the person that was making a threat or not. We suspect it is but that is under investigation as is the cause of the fire at this point. We dont know at the time name of the person that died. W person that made the threat was asked to leave the building and asked not to come back. It is not clear if it was a customer or employee. The fcc wants Cell Phone Companies to tell people about their plans when pg g turns off the fire because of fire danger. They will burn offer the fire to prevent its equipment from starting a wildfire. They are asking about the plans and how theyre reaching out to customers. State fire investigates said that pg g is blamed for several fires in 2017 and 2018. People are finding it harder harder to get good fire insurance. You spoke to chp dublin and they went up to check if the hazmat crews have come in and were waiting to hear back from them. But we know that the oil tanker is being hauled off the shoulder lane and to the first two lanes of northbound 680. This started this morning just before 2 00. There was a big rig driving northbound. It hit the Center Median and jackknifed. A fuel tanker came and clipped it, just enough to puncture the fuel tank to leak 3800 gallons of fuel on the highway. We know two other cars were involved in the accident. Everyone is said to be okay. There were no major injuries. The driver of the big rig was complaining of minor pain. That is the good news. The bad news is for everyones else. 680 is shut down. No news on when it will reopen. People are trying to see what going on. So it is backed up. So chp is said, if you have to get around this mess, theyre advising to you take northbound 880 through oakland, maybe take 58 over to canter valley and pop out on 880 eventually. But all of this will stay closed for several hours, maybe into the afternoon. It depends on how fast they can get this cleaned up. There was a lot of people just stuck in parked cars. They tned off the car and the lights. And some of them even took a nap. It is mess and nowhere to go. If youre headed this way, youre going to be diverted off mission boulevard. There is no way around this. You can see from the picture it is also raining. Sal is following that and trying to get you around 680. There are crashes everywhere. This might as well be a commute in the middle of february when the rain is hard. We have the truck accident there on the map. 680 is a mess all the way up this way. But the commute direction where everyone is going is this way and that is very slow. People have bailed and using 84. The backup begins at the dublin interchange. After that, it looks quieter and warmer as we go into the weekend. 7 35. One person is dead and four san jose firefighters are hurt after responding to a fire. You say that the investigators are looking into this as a likely case of arson. Reporter yes. They believe that the fire was intentionally set. This business is where the fire broke out. This is the adult super store. Before the fire here broke out it was actually the shop owner next door, the minimart next door that are called threatening to burn down the building. The man making threats was yielding a sledgehammer and went inside the adult store. After the fire was out, they discovered a persons body in the day. Of the adult store. They believe that is the person that was threatening to build down the burning. And someone has said that the person threatening to burn down the shop was one of the worker. It is a terrible tragedy. We did, after the fire was under control, find a body in the basement. We dont know if that was the person making the threats or not. We suspect it is. But that is under investigation as is the cause of the fire. Reporter we dont know the name of the person who died and the connection to the Adult Novelty shop. The firefighters did say that there were four firefighters that were injured battling this fire because floor three different stories here at they tackled the fire. We reached out to the fire spokesperson this morning and were waiting for that information. 7 38. A new state senate bill could soon let students all over the state get some extra sleep. Senate bill 328 will push back School Start Times for middle and high schools and it only needs the governor to sign it. The state legislature that passed it on friday. They say that classes at middle schools with not start before 8 couple and Elementary Schools will not start before 8 30. A report said that most students will still go to bed about the same time. They say it will help the students grades and their health. Students that Start School Later have decreased rates of depression and higher test scores and december Car Accidents in. A woman killed in a crash has been identified as 24year old kelly blake of discovery bay. Five other people were hurt. It is not known if alcohol or speed were factor its. If you have to commute, i would strongly pull out, i need to work from home today. The south bay commute is slowest in the santa cruise cruz mountains. Southbound 880 and 980, it will be right there if that building was not there. And the southbound traffic is very slow so is northbound traffic getting into the bay bridge quarter. The bay bridge is backed up for about a 30 minute delay. This mornings commute is very slow and it has a lot to do with the wet roads. Yes. Our first rain of the season has arrived. Im mike mibach. And im gasia mikaelian. We start with breaking news that we have been following all morning long. A major traffic issue. We begin our Team Coverage at this hour. Shes live at the scene where a big rig crashed in the overnight hours. Reporter what a mess it has been. We were just moved off the freeway from the park that was closed because were told by the chp that they plan to reopen one lane very soon. That was about ten minutes ago when i spoke to them. And right now, we should see one stream of traffic flowing through the far lefthand lane. It started just before 2 00 this morning. There was a big rig traveling northbound and it sit the Center Median and jackknifed. Seconds later, a fuel tanker clipped it just enough to puncture the tank 3800 gallons of fuel spilled on the freeway. Two other cars involved in the accident as well. The entire lanes of northbound 680 were completely shut down. People were complaining of minor injuries. The focus is on cleaning up all the fuel. It was covering all lanes. They will clean up the absorbent. Reporter the rain has already started. Its been on and off in terms of how heavy it has been. So that is one of the challenges for the crews. If youre driving on southbound 680, it is busy as well as people are trying to see what is going on. Try to use 880 if you can. It is hard when people work and live in different cities. So keep that in mind this morning. We should be seeing one lane of northbound 680 opening soon. We dont see it quite yet. Well keep an eye on it. And chp says it should happen very soon. Theyre working on cleaning it up. The fuel tanker that leaked, they call in their own company to come in and clean up the mess. A little improvement. This is one of two big rig accident. The people stuck with the cars because they were between the closure and the exit ramp, northbound 680, most people are not allowed past mission boulevard. This region is it a mess north and southbound. This looks like a christmas tree. 880 is slow in both directions. If you drive on fremont or the other way around, that is slow. This is a mess because of that one truck accident and all the slow traffic. We have a truck accident in oakland. We have slow traffic on the Santa Cruz Mountains and 80. The truck accident is southbound 80 and 980 that is behind this building. Look at this slow traffic here. And people are driving fast here. This is southbound 880. There was a big rig traveling northbound just past mission boulevard. It hit the Center Median and jackknifed and then a fuel tanker hit it and clipped the tank enough to where it punctured the tank and 3800 gallons of fuel leaked on the roadway. There are would other cars involved in this crash. Everyone is doing okay. The driver of the big rig was complaining of minor pain. But the big mess is all in records tothe fuel that spilled. 3800 gallons, and they have to take a lot of time to clean that up. If youre headed in the area, you have to find an alternative route. 680 northbound is not your route this morning. We were caught with a group of people that were stuck just past mission boulevard. They had nothing else to do but to turn off the car and lights and took a nap. Some got out and walked around with the cell phones to try to figure out what was going on this is a live look this morning. This is southbound 680. You see traffiis moving slowly as it approaches mission boulevard p the freeway is shut down on the northbound side. Around 8 00 this morning, they may have one lane reopened very soon. Were still waiting for that to happen. Its been about 30 minutes now and still no lanes open at all on northbound 680. So 880 is the best bet. But so many people found out about it they are probably backing up traffic as well. A lot of this is problem do you think with the rain. Were asking chp about it and they said that the roads are slick and it is unclear if that caused the initial crash. Its been a rough morning commute all across the bay area. Without the major crashes, well have big delays because of the first rain. It always puts pressure on traffic. But then it ends up backfiring. And then you have a commute that ends up like this. People on livermore are backed up. Look at this im going back this up here. There have is not one freeway in the east bay. That is in good shape right now because of the earlier problems. The truck accident slowed down the commute direction as well. There is 280 in downtown san jose. Bay bridge is not backed up now. It is backed up for 30 minutes. 80, 24 have all been very slow. They say that is a possible case of arson. They say that the fire is out. This is the adult super store. You can see that the front door has been boarded up. Well show you the video from yesterday when the fire broke out. It was the shop owner next door. A man ran a money any market next door called a person threatening to burn down the building. The man was weelding a sledgehammer and inside the adult super store. The firefighters did not go inside. They fought the fire from next door. After the fire was out, they discovered a persons body inside the basement of the novelty shop. The angry person that was threatening the shop was one of the workers. You tell he was mad all day and going through some stuff. I wish it could have been avoided. We did find a body in the basement. We dont know if that was the person making the threats or not. With you suspect it is. But that is under investigation as is the cause of the fire at this point. We dont know the name of the person that died and we dont have confirmation on the connection to the store. All of that is under investigation.
