This is a live look at a situation unfolding in philadelphia. There is fire in a building. At this point, i dont have confirmation this is tied to the protest we saw unfold over the weekend. If i could get confirmation about whether this is tied to Police Protests or resulting rioting. What is clear is that there is a large response with a ladder on top of what looks to be a three or four story building. This is in fact tied to protests unfolding itself philadelphia this morning. You can see the emergency response. Philadelphia, like many big cities across the country was home to large protests over the weekend. Some of the crowds were peaceful and gathered to speak out against the death of george floyd and also decades, if not generations of systemic racism. Some gatherings turned violent in philadelphia where there were rioters and looters causing damage. We are watching the response to a fire that started in a building in south philadelphia. The building appears to be large. Perhaps not the whole block but large. This is tied to protests and it was over the weekend and continues this morning. It is a story we continue to follow care in philadelphia and at home. In fact, lets talk about what is happening at home. The Lgbtq Community in San Francisco and its allies are preparing for the historic 50th pride anniversary. We are enjoying joined by the president , carolyn wise anger about what we know is an unprecedented time with covid 19. Thank you for joining us. Thank you for having me. Reporter as you know, im a little bit sad that the 50th had to happen under these circumstances sounds like the people involved with pride are going to do their best to give it that same feel over the internet. Yes, that has been the intention. We started planning what pride would look like around the time, or maybe a little bit before the mayor started to shelter in place and we started thinking about how we can bring the celebration to our community. Its going to be a little different with 13 hours of programming across that weekend of pride which is june 27 and 28th. You can find the Virtual Program with djs and speakers. There will be performances. We will do our best to pick up the celebration that we normally have at city hall and bring it to a virtual world. It will be different in light of the demonstrations going on here in the bay area. But, pride started as a demonstration and an act of civil disobedience. So, covid has not stopped pride and these demonstrations actually highlight what the purpose of pride truly is. I have to ask you, since you mentioned the demonstrations and all of that, do you think that Something Like this, and you have kind of already said it, but i want to hear more about how this resonates with the Lgbtq Community . People protesting in the streets is something you know about. You resonates more than most people think. We have people come and remind people that pride was a protest. It is deeper than that. It was a protest against Police Brutality, but also a forgotten fact that people dont talk about is that pride was a protest started by a black trans woman and protection of a black trans woman. It has always played played two black bodies and blackbodies. We dont talk about a man that was murdered in florida like george floyd. It is almost like pride is going back to the roots of what it originally was. Reporter do you think pride, when its allowed to meet again, that the celebrations will be bigger . Do you think there will be pent up desire to get back out onto the streets and claim them again, after we are allowed to . Definitely, when we are able to meet physically again, it will definitely be a party in a time where people gather and say that we got to the other side of this. One of the mantras and theme songs is that i will survive by gloria gaynor. Ive always had this mythical fantasy that she would sing on the city hall steps. I shouldnt have said that on tv. To really celebrate getting to the other side of Something Like covid. Reporter it is a joy to have you join us. Thank you for joining us and i think people will take comfort in the fact that something is going on, even if it is in traditional. Beyond that, we feel we should strategically in our local communities Work Together in order that we may claim our collective guilt as a nation for creating the conditions that have led to unfortunately too many incidences where violence has been perpetrated against africanamericans. This has been done for over 400 years with the International Slave trade. It has been done for the 250 years that america was complicit in the maintenance of slavery. Enough is enough. We are saying today that talk is cheap and now it is time for white america, in particular, to take the lead and say, we are going to stop racial violence. We are going to stop injustice and we are going to Work Together as a beloved human family to make sure there is peace in this land in the world. Talking to us about a city, what is your thought about that . As a civil rights organization, we have been peaceful. I have been in this since the age of 14. Whenever we became involved in protest, we went through training and we were taughtpersons who are doing violent acts are basically opportunistic individuals who are invading the ranks of a peaceful protest. People should be aware that there are these kinds of people who take advantage of the pain of those who are oppressed. Reporter do you give any credibility to the theory that some people might say that those people who we see burning and looting and ruining parts of their own city might not be outside agitators but instead are acting out against generations of systemic racism . That this anger and fury that we are seeing is just a manifestation of that . We feel that we should be about solutions. If persons are interested in helping to come t with our struggles. Sit down with each other so that we may listen and hear each other out. Violence is never the way. Though, i can understand and sympathize with the fact that young people and those who have been in the struggle are just upset with america. America has refused to accept the fact that it needs therapy. This nation is sick and if we do not go through therapeutic experiences of firstracism and admitting the 250 years of slavery was wrong and admitting that thewas started by a faith leader, thomas dixon, in charlotte, north carolina. It was about terrorizing black people and making sure re not enfranchised and would not be able to exercise our right to vote. We have a repeat of the same old thing happening today in america. You have Voter Suppression being led by number 45, the president of this nation. We have people trying to keep africanamericans still down on the ground with their political, social and religious knees on our necks. But, it is time, it is time, for the people of conscience and goodwill to see this does not represent america at its best. We mustand respect the di of all peoples. Or else, as doctor king says, we will perish as fools in this nation will go the way of ancient rome that failed in yesteryears. Reporter reverend amos brown speaking in front of your church in San Francisco. I know we will hear more from you as you leave the gathering on the steps of the San Francisco city hall. The family of george floyd and many protesters are now asking for more serious charges against the former officer who was arrested in the case in the last hour, i did speak with the bay area attorney about the possibility. Is pretty clear that at the time that mr. Floyd was on the ground that the officer who had his knee on his neck was told he needed to turn them over. That would have relieved the pressure on his stomach and his neck and he refused to do that. That led to the conscious decision to inflict harm on this man at that time. Reporter he said the intent to do harm meets the definition for seconddegree murder adding the firstdegree murder requires premeditation would not apply. He believes that the three other officers will be charged for their roles in floyds debt.
