Its interesting that she has this background with the Vice President because weve watched Kamala Harris and gavin newsom for quite a few years now in california, sort of decide which office they want, whos going to go into the other office. And so one wonders whether the Vice President called gavin newsom and said, this is the person id prefer in that office. And gavin newsom, for his own reasons, has said, okay. Butler could be sworn in as early as tuesday night when the Senate Returns to session. And she could also be possibly running for the seat december eighth is the deadline for candidates to file for that office. And we now have information on the funeral arrangements for. Her casket was flown back to San Francisco on a military jet last night from washington. It was then driven to sinai memorial chapel, where San Francisco Police Escorted the casket inside. Today, feinsteins Office Released information on how the public can pay their respects. The late senator will lie in state at San Francisco city hall on wednesday. This will be open to the public from nine in the morning to seven in the evening. Mourners will be welcomed to sign a condolence book. And then on thursday, a Funeral Service will be held in the herbst theater at the war memorial and Performing Arts Center on venice. This is not open to the public due to limited space. First responders rushing to the waters off of marin county today after a911 call came in about a swimmer missing amid a possible shark attack. That swimmer still unaccounted for tonight. Ktvu zac sos is live tonight in marine county with the latest on that search. Zach well, much of that search effort has paused right now due to nightfall, but rescue crews spending all day searching for that missing swimmer. Those crews coming from multiple agencies as they rushed to a remote beach off the Point Reyes National seashore. They searched the waters from high above and below. Stinson beach fire, part of a Multiagency Team of First Responders desperate scanning the waters off marin county sunday for a missing swimmer who witnesses say was pulled under by a shark. We responded and did all that we could. And the 911 call coming in just after 1030 in the morning, the swimmer going under off Wildcat Beach around 11 miles north of stinson beach. We launch an rwc, which is a rescue watercraft. Its essentially a jet ski outfitted for rescue purposes. Our rescue swimmers deployed a dye pack. So that they could see the area of the current. His team joining crews from the Us Coast Guard marin county fire and the National Park service. A cutter rescue boat also launched and in the skies overhead, three medical choppers nearby, several hikers watching on and taking these photos. The first thing we saw was a helicopter flying above. And i zoomed in on it and there was a medical sign on the tail only learning hours later what had happened. I mean, its just i mean, its a tragedy. By nightfall, rescue teams still unable to locate the swimmer. Stinson unfortunately, is known for having sharks out in the waters, and most of the time, humans and sharks live completely safely together. Between 2000 and 2021, only five great white shark attacks reported in the point reyes area. I just cant believe like that someone just went through something so horrific and so far, officials have yet to identify why that missing swimmer they plan to resume their full fledged search effort at first daylight tomorrow. Crockett fire says the victim lived at the house on lillian street, but they have not released the name of the person who died. Fire crews responded just after seven this morning following reports of smoke and flames coming from the home. Firefighters from crockett rodeo, hercules and Contra Costa County worked together and contain that fire just before eight this morning. Still no word on what caused it. The Largest Health care strike in us history could now be days away. The contract for 75,000 kaiser employees made up of eight different unions, expired at midnight with no deal from management. This means a walkout at hundreds of medical facilities and several states could happen as early as wednesday, affecting more than 12 million members. Ktvu is Bailey Ocarroll reports. I would be upset because, i mean, this is my hospital. This is where i go to write. And so trying to find emergency care, this is where you would think im going to the e. R. Or whatever. So yeah, i would be very upset. At more than 9 million californians rely on kaiser for health care with an impending strike, patients are worried it could impact them. Its also concerning because my mom is a cancer patient, you know, and so does that affect her or shes currently here getting a blood transfusion. So i mean, its scary. Kaiser wants to put those concerns to rest. In a statement to ktvu, they wrote, we have a contingency plan in place to ensure members continue to receive safe, high quality care for the duration of the strike. Our hospitals and Emergency Departments will remain open. Kaiser permanente members can get updates on appointments, pharmacy guidance and where to get care on kp. Org front line workers say they have no choice but to strike. We want the kaiser executive one to make sure that, you know, they bargain in good faith to we want to make sure that the kaiser executives stop the short staffing that we have. And three, we want to make sure as Frontline Health care worker, i want to make sure that our patients are safe and getting the Quality Services that they need. Alan smith has been a radiologist at kaiser for the last 15 years and says the Staff Shortages are clear. Not just because of the long waits in her own radiology department, but also what she sees as a patient and other departments. I had an eye infection and i went to the emergency. See, they gave me a couple of drops. Mind you, it was over the phone. I tried to get an appointment as an own health care. It was three months out before i can even get an appointment with an ophthalmologist. Thats just simple. Though kaiser says theyve hired more than 50,000 frontline workers in the last two years, they added that they expect to reach their goal of hiring 10,000 new employees in 2023 by the end of this month. Union employees told me that those negotiations were ongoing today. They and that they hope to continue bargaining, hoping to reach an agreement before wednesday when those workers could go on strike. But i do want to emphasize this Bargaining Agreement does not involve doctors and nurses. And a strike would not impact Emergency Health services. According to kaiser in the newsroom, im Bailey Ocarroll, ktvu fox two news San Francisco Police Arrested a man who they say stabbed four people along market street. Police say officers respond to a report of an assault at 745 this morning right near market and battery around the same time, Police Received another report of a stabbing at fourth and market. Thats where officers found three people who had been stabbed. All four victims were taken to the hospital. Their conditions were not released. Police say they arrested one man for both incidents. One person has been stabbed in vallejo outside the park gates of six flags, discovery kingdom, vallejo pd says two people who were not park guests got into an argument last night that apparently started on social media nearby security personnel responded immediately since they were just a few feet away. The victim suffered nonlife threatening injuries and was sent to the hospital, but the suspect managed to get away. No other injuries have been reported and no arrests have been made and police in antioch say a homicide suspect is expected to survive after being shot by officers. Police say the shooting happened near west third and eighth street around 740 this morning when the suspect was spotted with a gun inside a suspicious vehicle. Officers say shots were fired when the suspect refused to comply and took off running. The suspect, who was wanted for a homicide in antioch earlier this year, was taken to the hospital where hes been treated for his injuries. Antioch police, along with the das office, are investigating shooting. Today marks 30 years since the kidnaping of polly klaas. Later in our newscast, how her family marked the day and the way the tragic event has reshaped how police handle missing childrens cases. Lamonica mike, the former Police Officer says that he was subjected to jokes and teasing about nine by 11. His Attorney Says he had had enough. So he left the force and then filed a lawsuit. He sacrificed his career to make this point. Randy strauss is the attorney who represented former San Jose Police officer nabeel haider, who sued the department in 2018. Haider was born in lebanon and is a practicing muslim who joined the force in 1996 after the nine divided by 11 attacks. He started to be. Targeted and attacked by my fellow Police Officers because he was a muslim from the middle east. And what i mean daily basis, he was called names , really disgusting names like terrorist suicide bomber, a member of isis. The complaint says in 2003, when the United States invaded iraq, harassing towards haider escalated. He says he was repeatedly harassed during briefing meetings. Though he served in the United States military. Haider says on veterans day 2017, during a meeting, a captain called him an isis veteran, and everyone burst into laughter for nabeel. That was really the breaking point. Thats when he realized that he would never fit in with this group of guys and women, that he was an outsider. He was another. After leaving the force and filing a lawsuit, strauss says, San Jose Police claimed haider participated in the jokes and called it locker room banter. In response to the settlement, the council on americanislamic relations, or cair, released a statement saying in part, it is deeply concerning that the city and San Jose Police department did not acknowledge any wrongdoing, instead choosing to trivialize his claims by suggesting he was a willing participant. We reached out to the San Jose City attorneys office, but they didnt respond in time for this report. And strauss says that haider has since moved out of the bay area. Mike Lamonica Peters live tonight in san jose. Lamonica, thank you for that. Governor newsom has signed a bill into law that increases eviction protections for california renters. Supporters say the law resolves a loophole in a 2019 law that allowed landlords to evict tenants out for no fault reasons. In a Santa Clara County case, one landlord evicted tenants, saying they needed to move in. Relatives but then relisted the apartment for double the rent. Well, now landlords have to pre identify the new tenants in relative cases and fill the rental within three months of eviction. The law also allows for more lawsuits against landlords for wrongful evictions. The death toll from the maui wildfires went up by one following the death of a victim at a hospital in honolulu. Family members say laurie allen died friday after spending more than seven weeks in a hospital burn unit. They say as allen tried to escape the flames in lahaina, she had to run through a burning field. She was rescued by a Police Officer and firefighter who brought her to a shelter and then to a hospital. Allen is among almost 100 people who died from that firestorm on august 8th, nearly 8000 people remain displaced and living in hotels and other accommodations around maui. All right. And so those fires, the smoke potential has really diminished, if at all. If anything is going to come out there at all. So despite the off shore flow that were going to experience with warming increasing temperatures, air quality should stay pretty darn nice. Fire danger goes up, as you would suspect. These are the highs from today. 80 in fairfield, 79 in antioch. Highs tomorrow like i say, will be a couple of degrees warmer than these. The trend is this the temperatures today warmed a couple and it goes up a few degrees each day as we head into the middle of the week. Even in the end of the week, by saturday, we should start to be cooling down. By saturday night into sunday. But a warm period coming up. Its going to be a heat wave, not shouldnt be mostly upper mid 80s and then some low 90s when we get into saturday and sunday would be the warmer or saturday would be the warmest temperatures wed see maybe 95 in the inland valley still going to be warm enough that fire danger is a thing. So thats kind of going to be a story here at some point this week where the fire danger will elevate, not extreme, it doesnt appear, but well elevate. It also sparked major changes in how these types of cases are investigated and prosecuted. 30 years later, emotions are still high. Ktvu henry lee takes a look back. October 1st, 1993, the date 12 year old polly klaas was kidnaped during a sleepover at her home in normally quiet petaluma. She was found dead two months later. Her killer sent to death row where he remains today. It makes me so angry. You know, it really does. You know, im still dealing with major anxieties as 30 years later as her mom slept in the next room, polly had two girlfriends over at her home. A man suddenly appeared in the doorway with a knife. He told the girls to lie on the ground. Asked who live there and when . Polly answered up, he took her and left. Pollys father, longtime child advocate marc klaas, says the pain has subsided, but will always be there. The whole idea when people tell you to get on with your life or to get over it is ridiculous. And its absurd because you cant put Something Like that behind you. Cherished photos on his walls, replacing the ones once plastered on missing posters across the bay area. A painful reminder of the tragedy that will always be part of petalumas past. Just a lot of more stranger danger. Yeah. And lots of doors locked. And Shannon Russell was ten when polly was kidnaped. The two had been in the same soccer league. It definitely defines petaluma. Ive traveled all over the world and people will hear the word petaluma and theyll say, oh, polly klaas. And they live in other countries. Other places. Pollys killer, Richard Allen davis, was identified after investigators realized Sonoma County sheriffs deputies had contacted him hours after the kidnaping when his piano got stuck in a ditch. Hes been sentenced to death, but the Death Penalty now on hold in california. If there is any justice in the world, hed be hed be in the ground and shed still be walking around. Vale bello worked the investigation as a detective sergeant with the petaluma Police Department. The fact that that davis is still here, the fact that hes still alive and being taken care of by our state dollars, you know, it it doesnt just bother me. It bothers a lot of us. Davis led investigators to a shallow grave near cloverdale, where he had left pollys body. He was smoking a cigaret with his hands cuffed in front of him like he didnt have a care in the world, says he actually thought about shooting davis right there. I started to reach for my shoulder holster. I had i had my pistol there and my now good friend from the fbi reached over and hes like, hey, man, hey, hey. Thats, you know, not worth it. Polly hartline, pollys case has spurred many changes. Theres kidnap protocols now. Theres things like megans law, which notify the public about sex offenders living within their community so that they can use that information. We have an amber alert now. Hes a sociopath. Hes a walking embodiment of why you have a Death Penalty. And, of course, this this case spawned a the three strikes law ktvu political analyst brian sobel was vice mayor of petaluma at the time of the kidnaping hes visited. Davis at san quentin prison, where he refused to admit that he had sexually assaulted her. At one point he got very frustrated and he said, you know, if i ever admitted to that, id be dead. And i said, rick, youre dead anyway. Sobel and klaas say california has yo yoed with respect to its criminal justice policies. From three strikes to progressive of das calling for reforms. Its not just das. Its polly petitions as well. The politicians seem to have seemed to be doing everything that they can to empty out the prisons, and that includes putting dangerous people back on the street. The Marin County Sheriffs Office says it found an inmate dead in their cell today at the county jail. The office says a deputy was conducting a routine check at 2 24 a. M. Thats when the deputy found an inmate hanging in their cell. Life saving measures were performed by the san rafael fire department, but that inmate was pronounced dead an hour later. The Sheriffs Office has now requested the novato Police Department do an independent investigation into the death. Fleet week in San Francisco kicks off tomorrow. A good five degrees over many spots yesterday day temperatures were a little chilly on friday. Remember that . We got a few showers, sprinkles up north, especially friday night into saturday. These were the highs from today and the interesting thing, as you look at the highs from today, how much rain they got up in butte county, up around paradise and colusa talked some folks up there. They got like 2. 5in of rain from this. So in those fires zones up in northern Del Norte County as well, lots of rain. So that the smoldering fires, the ones that were bringing the smoke and the poor air quality our way and with the wind shifts coming, we talked about it earlier that smoke would would have been coming our way. But it looks as though those fires have been not completely extinguished, but have really been knocked down aggressively. So the warming trend is going to happen. Is it unusual . No. This is exactly what happens this time of year and it will warm up. I dont suspect we could see a record. I guess its not hard to get records this time of year in off brand place. But the idea is going to be for a pretty decent, warm up. And so no matter what this time of year, when you get into the mid 80s, upper 80s, low 90s, youre going to increase the fire danger and its going to be a thing. So this week we will most certainly we have some concerns for fire, especially towards the middle end of the week and the potential for a number of small fire starts to happen. Are there absolutely. A woman is suing disney world for 50,000 in damages for an alleged injury from a waterslide. Emma and Edward Mcginnis claim the injury happened during a 2019 visit to disney worlds waterpark. The suit says emma came down the waterslide and experienced a push of loose garments into her body when she hit the pool at the end of the ride. The suit says emma could have avoided the injury if disney would have instructed her to wear the proper clothing. Disney has not commented on that suit.
