The man convicted of attacking congresswoman Nancy Pelosis husband with a hammer is going to prison today. Sentencing comes six months after david depape was convicted on all federal counts, as ktvu Christien Kafton shows us people were quick to react to the judges decision. Inside San Franciscos federal court building, u. S. District judge Jacqueline Scott corley handed down a 30 year sentence for david depape following his november conviction. Christine pelosi, daughter of nancy and paul, read statements from both parents describing the impact the attack had on the pelosi family. Paul pelosi saying, quote, ever since the defendant violently broke into my home and woke me up yelling, wheres nancy . At 2 a. M. On october 28th, 2022. My life has been irrevocably changed, the attorneys asked the judge. For 14 years, prosecutors asked for 40. The judge said depape didnt express remorse for trying to kidnap the former speaker, and also said she had to weigh the impact depapes actions will have on discouraging potential future politicians from ever entering Public Service because theyre worried about the safety of their families. Christine pelosi read a statement from her mother as well. The former of the speaker house, saying, quote, it is therefore necessary that the guilty party sentence be very long as punishment for the attack and the injuries, paul continues to suffer and as a deterrent to others considering violence against public officials. Ultimately, the judge sentenced a pap to 360 months in prison, 18 months for the time hes already served the u. S. Attorney for the Northern District of california, Ismael Ramsey issued a Statement Read by a spokesperson outside of the court today. Todays sentence reflects David Depapes lack of remorse and contrition for violently assaulting mr. Pelosi. The courts sentence will ensure that depape will not be able to use violence to pollute the political process. The fbi also said the sentence should be lengthy. The brutal attack on paul pelosi in his home was not only an attack on an individual, but an assault on the very principles and safety and civility that formed the bedrock of our democracy. Depapes family was at the courthouse today. His son speaking out after the sentence, i think thats quite sad, i think thats a really long time, because if you think about it right, hes already nearly 50. Hes hes basically its just a death sentence. Depape still faces a trial in San Francisco superior court. Their criminal courts hear that is set to get underway next week. If he is convicted, there, his state sentence would run concurrently to his federal sentence. In San Francisco, Christien Kafton. An east bay woman was on track to graduate from college tonight, but police say the father of her little boy shot and killed her and now, three months after her tragic death in nursing, students grieving mother and her children that she leaves behind were on hand to accept her diploma. New at ten ktvu joey horta is live from Diablo Valley College. With how this promising student is being remembered. Christina, joey horta reporting live for us tonight in Contra Costa County. Joey, thank you. I dont think that Police Action among younger students or just people of any sort, is necessary. Several of the protesters at a vacant building near the campus of uc berkeley have been arrested and identified. Well hear from members of the community on this latest demonstration over the war in gaza and in whether it has been a cooler pattern. Paint us a visit over the past few days. And this pattern, it could stick around as we head into your weekend. Well have the update coming up. Well share why this year at the Contra Costa County fair, theres a new policy , an it h all ktvu Jana Katsuyama spoke with University Officials about why the response to this demonstration was different than the one set up on sproul plaza. Uc Berkeley Students say on campus, there has been a lot of talk about these recent protests. Its all over instagram, all over social media platforms. The lawn outside the uc Berkeley Building on channing way was clear friday after University Workers cleared the lawn of the tents, signs and barriers that had been erected by protesters earlier in the week. Overnight, uc berkeley police, along with officers from 20 different Law Enforcement agencies from foster city up to fairfield, were called in to remove the encampment. 12 protesters were arrested as police and riot gear erected barricades surrounding the protest site to keep other protesters from entering the area. A uc berkeley Spokesman Says police removed protesters from the building that had been vacant for several years. A request from the very beginning, a criminal act. They broke into a building, they vandalized the building, they trespassed on University Property on friday, the University Says only one person was confirmed to be a uc berkeley student. Four were berkeley residents, two were from the greater bay area, one is from colorado, and four others have refused to say their identity. So Alameda CountySheriffs Office is investigating. The University Says the Law Enforcement response was different from the resolution, with antiwar protesters in a Different Group at the sproul plaza encampment because those protesters did not break the law. We have always at uc berkeley responded differently to criminal activity than we have to violation of campus policies. Some neighbors said they do not approve of people outside the Community Coming onto campus property, but others say they dont agree with the Police Response when the protest had seemed peaceful. I dont think that Police Action among younger students or just people of any sort, is necessary during demonstration of activism. Some people are taking this time and platform to speak up for their values, and thats something that berkeley prides itself on. So, you know, im here to support it in comparison to other College Campuses and stuff. I do think that our protests have been a lot more peaceful, which is why weve all been pretty supportive of it. The University Says the protesters were arrested on charges including vandalism, burglary and conspiracy. I called the alameda County DistrictAttorneys Office to find out if she plans to file charges so far, ive not received any response. In berkeley, Jana Katsuyama ktvu, fox two news. The president of Sonoma State University has announced his retirement one day after he was put on administrative leave for making a controversial agreement with propalestine protesters. Mike lee sent an email to students and faculty on tuesday announcing that agreement, which included an academic boycott of israel. On wednesday, the cal State University chancellor placed lee on administrative leave, accusing him of, quote, insubordination when making that agreement. Then, late thursday, the chancellor put out another statement saying lee informed her of his decision to retire. Nathan evans, of the schools academic and Student Affairs department, has been named the acting president. The Israeli Military says it has recovered the bodies of three people taken hostage by hamas on october seventh. They say a 56 year old man and two women, ages 22 and 28, were killed at the nova music festival. Officials say their bodies were found overnight, but the exact location was not released. Israel says around 100 hostages are still captive in gaza, along with the bodies of around 30 more. Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the deaths heartbreaking, saying we will return all of our hostages, both the living and the dead. The Us State Department has issued a Worldwide Travel advisory. The Department Says this is due to the possibility of terrorist attacks against us citizens, especially lgbtq people. Officials say people should stay on high alert during pride celebrations. The advisory comes after the fbi issued a warning this week about possible terrorist threats ahead of next months pride celebrations. All right, shifting gears to our weather. Another nice day after the fog cleared out. Heres mark tamayo. Hey, mark. Hi, there. Greg. Yeah. The fog is making its comeback once again for tonight, so no big changes with our forecast. The heat remains absent. Well be starting out the day with some cloud cover tomorrow morning near the coast and right around the bay. Take a look at the highs from this afternoon. Lots of 60s around the bay and the warmest locations. No 90s not much in the way of 80s just some 70s out there. As you can see for antioch and fairfield and san jose 76. We will have the cloud cover tomorrow morning becoming partly sunny even mostly sunny into the afternoon hours inland, and then on sunday its a partly sunny day as well and temperatures really not moving around too much. If you want the warmer temperatures, looks like we will track that. Well have that change in the early next week. Bay to breakers sunday morning in San Francisco. The bay side, as you can see, mostly cloudy skies at 8 00, temperatures in the 50s. Theres the parade route heading out to the breakers, out toward ocean beach, and we are expecting still partly sunny skies. Temperatures not warming up too much. Mainly in the upper 50s. Heres a satellite. And as you can see right now, the low clouds getting their act together offshore. And already some patches pushing back into the bay for this evening. So right now its either partly cloudy or even mostly cloudy in a few spots for tonight. And current numbers San Francisco 54, napa 56 degrees and san jose currently in the lower 60s. Winds are a factor. Earlier today we still have a breeze out toward fairfield out of the southwest, at 23 miles an hour out toward sfo, winds in the single digits. So the winds, at least on these panels, not as strong for this evening. Here is our live camera looking out toward sfo, where we have the cloud cover moving in. And heres the forecast model tomorrow morning showing you the expected overcast at 7 00 and then into the afternoon hours, the clouds trying to clear back to near the coastline. And theres the eventual temperature range from 60 all the way to 78 degrees. We will talk more about that eventual warm up with your full update coming up in a little bit. All right mark, thank you. Well see you soon. The bay area has been out of the drought for a couple of years now. For the first time in more than four years, nearly the entire state is free of drought or abnormally dry conditions, according to the latest u. S. Drought monitor data. California now has its lowest amount of Drought Conditions since 2011, thanks to a fairly wet winter and spring, the states only remaining patch of abnormally dry conditions is in southern california, in the easternmost parts of San Bernardino and riverside counties. Former workers say an east bay hotel at an east bay hotel rather say theyre still waiting to get paid the thousands of dollars theyre due, and progress in pulling teachers off the picket lines in Contra Costa County. What needs to happen next before theres a final deal . And fried food, carnival rides and chaperons the Contra Costa County fair runs through the weekend. What organizers hope to accomplish with the new rule agreement with teachers who threaten to strike. The two Year Agreement gives teachers with the Contra Costa CountySchool EducatorsAssociation Union a 6 retroactive raise dating back to july of last year. They will also get a 1 raise starting on july 1st. An agreement provision allows salaries to be renegotiated if the cost of living adjustment exceeds 2. Bargaining unit members must now vote to ratify that agreement. Former workers from the Radisson Hotel in oakland are demanding payment for more than 404,000. They say they were not paid. They spoke out today in front of the oakland airport. Hotel workers first launched complaints four years ago, and last october, the city determined the hotel did engage in waive wage theft, withholding money from 128 workers. But nearly six months, six months later, those workers say they still have not been paid. The city Attorneys Office needs to file a lawsuit to force the radisson to pay these workers, and the department of workplace and employment standards should impose a penalty on the radisson for each day that they have delayed since the city told them that they owed all this money. This case is considered oaklands largest wage theft case in recent city history. Thousands of people are expected to head to the Contra Costa County fair this weekend. With it comes the return of fun, food and festivities. But these are not the only things that have come to be associated with the fair. In recent years, theres been a rise in violence and disorder. Ktvu alice wertz is live from the fairgrounds with the rules in place aimed at keeping people safe. Alice yes, greg. Its just wrapping up here tonight for the evening at the contra costa fair in antioch. This has been going on for 75 years. Like a lot of county fairs, theres arts, crafts, culture and deep fried food. But it was after last year that there were some fights that they changed the policy on attendance. This year, no one under 18 is allowed to attend without an adult. With them, it was last year, friday night during the contra costa fair in antioch. Hair pulling, grabbing, punching spoiled the good time. Young people fighting caused the fair to close early that night, a strict new policy was put in place requiring all minors to be accompanied by an adult over 25 years old. We have implemented a chaperon policy for the safety of our guests, so all guests under the age of 18 need to be chaperoned by an adult of 25 years or older. If there are groups with more than four minors, there needs to be an additional adult for every four kids. Some knew about the fights that broke out here last year. David fernandez is 17. I was here last year, but i do understand because of the fights and everything. So i didnt see them. But i seen the videos though. Signage at the entry gates spell out the new policy. I didnt even know that until we got up to the front. If a minor behaves badly, security will escort the minor and the adult chaperon off the fairgrounds. Organizers want everyone to have a good time and to feel safe at the fair, especially with a lot of violence. You just dont know what people are going to do. I just think its a good idea just to make sure the kids are behaving correctly. Vendors and participants we spoke with also liked the new policy, knowing its usually teens and young adults in crowds with no supervision that have been troublesome in the past. They welcome this new policy. We need to keep keep the Contra Costa County fair alive and everything. And if thats what it takes, we need to do that. And here in antioch, this four day county fair will wind up on sunday afternoon and evening. And as for minors, they need to have an adult with them. As we mentioned, there are all the good stuff, things that happen here at the county fair, deep fried foods, pony rides, free petting zoo, and lots of goodies. Back to you, greg. Yeah, still will be a good time even with the new rules. Alice wirtz. Thank you. People in San Franciscos hayes valley turned out for the opening of a new trader joes this morning. Store officials cut the ribbon, and at the new location on fulton street and laguna. The new store will feature more than 12,000ft s of familiar trader joes favorites. The stores captain said. Its an exciting addition to the hayes valley neighborhood, and i like the sisterhood, like the companion ship, and also like more. You learn about your roots. As we celebrate aapi heritage month, well take a closer look at a dance studio thats teaching the next generation about chinese folk dance in a bay area brewery with korean flair, getting some national attention, the praise daca beer in oakland is receiving what happened after stanford to a six to nothing lead against saint marys. Jesse gary has that story later at sports, and not so fast. Theres a hiccup in the plan to bring pandas to San Francisco, and it al mes were in the middle of. Seizing the date in the middle of. Trying new things in the middle of the perfect pairing. And parking it here for the night so come get away. Together. To the incredible, unforgettable illinois the middle of everything. Ktvu Claudine Wong shows us it gives people an opportunity to enjoy a pastime while learning about their roots. For these dancers, every movement is about a connection to culture and to heritage. Each dance has a story to tell, a story that follows it with the music and then the movements. Thats like the part that i really enjoy about dance. Chinese is 56 minority groups and its so unique. Each one has their own culture, music and so forth. So when the audience are, you know, watching our dancers, they really kind of like a put china into a small a, a scope so that they can see from different angles by looking at different dancers. What i want my girls to do at the very beginning is to know as much Chinese Culture as possible. The Chinese Folk Dance Association is one of the oldest organizations of its kind. It started in San Franciscos chinatown 65 years ago and was created as a way for generations to connect. So i think having chinese dance, because its not something readily available, its hard to find. Its just nice to have to give them that space to sort of learn about themselves and to be able to grow. Because being a kid nowadays, i can imagine how tough it is. I like the sisterhood, like the companionship, and also like more you learn about your roots today. That connection comes at no cost. Every saturday this dance room is filled hour after hour with children and even adults learning to dance. There are a lot of chinese dance schools in the bay area, but were free and were in the community. Most of most of our children are girls. They come from immigrant families and their families. Their parents really want them to have to share a group, share a little bit of their culture, keep a little bit of the culture because theyre born here and, and, they may not be able to afford the high, high tuitions of other schools. Most of these dancers have been here for years. 12 years ago, amanda lee was at school when she saw a performance. I was at my Elementary School and there was this girl who was performing chinese folk dance, and i was like, oh my god, thats super pretty. I want to do that too. Thats about the time. Nikki laus mother found the association, too. It seems like a really good way to spend my saturday. This seems like. And i was also not very connected with my culture, with my parents moving here and so i was like, oh, this might kind of seems like a cool way to kind of connect with them. 12 years later, one of their favorite dances is one they performed together. Its a duet with me and nikki, and, the story is like im the peacock and shes like a bird catcher and shes going through the forest and shes looking for a peacock and she happens to find me. And then we kind of just play around in the forest a little while. Sometimes i see, like, people dancing along with us, which i really like, enjoy. I think thats like, really sweet. It is just one of many dances that with every performance, tells another story. We make trips to go to china and then we do like dance camps there, and then we learn dances there, and then they come back and then we do the same thing. We pass down like the dances per generation. Its a little bit of acting. So it helps to kind of teach the students. You cant just go through the movements, you have to sort of feel through them and what it gives them is something that stays with them. Teachers are volunteers, they they they have been they theyve been dancing with us since they were 7 or 8 years old. They went went working, build their families. And now they volunteer to come back. They come back to share the art, the dance, the sisterhood, a link that they hope gets passed down to generations to come in San Francisco. Claudine wong, ktvu, fox two news. It is the super bowl of craft beers and a bay area brewery is in the game. Daca beer out of oakland is one of a handful of breweries that will take part in sam adams crafting dreams beer bash next month. Theyll be taking their korean inspired flavors to boston for a chance at a mentorship and a collaboration with the craft beer giant. The brewmaster and founder of daca beer told us at four what winning the competition would mean. What im doing is pretty new in the industry, and just to, be able to collaborate with the, you know, pioneer of the craft beer industry, that would just really mean a lot. And like the program name, that would be sort of brewing our american dream. Mayor london breeds plan to bring two giant pandas to the San Francisco zoo is getting some pushback from city leaders. The board of supervisors voted to postpone a request made by the mayor to raise 25 million to host the pandas once theyre brought in from china. That money would go to address some of the zoos infrastructure needs. Supervisor asha sapphire, who is hoping to unseat the mayor this fall, says pandas are a distraction from the citys more pressing issues. This is about prioritizing our future. This is about prioritizing our children over pandas. And if we can rally to fund a home for pandas, we certainly can rally to raise money for essential programs that impact every single corner of this city. Controversy over an image obtained by the New York Times from the home of a Us Supreme Court justice. As fox news Shannon Bream explains, you could cause significant problems for samuel alito and his colleagues. A three year old picture of an upside down flag outside the home of Supreme CourtJustice Samuel alito is generating calls from the left for him to recuse himself from some high profile cases as the country awaits a slew of opinions in a series of contentioUs Supreme Court debates this year, the court suffers historically low trust right now among the american people, and this is doing nothing to help that. The New York Times obtained the picture dated january 17th, 2021, and quoted a law professor who equated the flag to putting up a stop the steal sign in the justices yard. Justice alito told me today that it was yard signs that actually sparked the dispute. That led to his wife, martha ann, briefly flying the flag upside down, something in which he says he had no involvement. Alito says his wife had spoken to a neighbor about a sign saying bleep trump, in view of where schoolchildren waited for their bus. It did not go well. Alito says the neighbor then put up a sign directly naming mrs. Alito and blaming her for the events of january 6th. According to the justice, while the alitos were on a walk, a man at the home with the signs got into a heated discussion with mrs. Alito, quote, including the c word she was distraught and hung the flag, as it appears in that published photo. The justice offered no explanation for that gesture. Most of the country got its first glimpse of martha and alito during her husbands heated confirmation hearings. At one point in tears, Senate JudiciaryCommittee Chairman durbin was a part of those hearings and said today that the flag photo quote clearly creates the appearance of bias. Justice alito should recuse himself immediately from cases related to the 2020 election and the january 6th insurrection, including the question of the former president s immunity in us v donald trump. There is no indication Justice Alito intends to step away from any case currently under consideration. We will get the next batch of opinions from the Supreme Court next thursday in washington.
