With the israeli gaza strip. Im confident theyre going to act on the rules of war. Theres a standard that democratic countries and institutions will go by, and so im confident that theres going to be an ability for the in gaz have access to medicine and food and water. That was President Joe Biden yesterday on 60 minutes as palestinians in gaza are in dire need of humanitarian aid. Well go live to israel in just a moment. Meanwhile, the United States military is increasing its presence in the middle east amid a threat from iran and another terrorist group. And also ahead, back here at home, an update on the speakers race. Republicans have a vote planned for tomorrow, but it appears that their nominee does not have the support he needs. Well go through that and what could come next on capitol hill. Good morning and welcome to Way Too Early on this monday, october 16th. Im jonathan lemire. Thanks for starting your day and week with us that is poised to be a busy week. Well begin this morning with the latest out of the israel hamas war. The United States secretary of States Antony Blinken told reporters israel will reopen its border into gaza for aid. The humanitarian crisis in gaza continues to grow. According to the u. N. , hospitals in that settlement are expected to run out of generator fuel within 24 hours, this as the territorys 2. 3 Million People do not have access to clean Running Water and are out of both food and medical supplies. About 600,000 palestinians have been displaced from gaza so far after leaving the northern part of that area in the wake of fridays Evacuation Order issued by israel. However, a leader of hamas said yesterday palestinians will not leave gaza to migrate to egypt. As gaza braces for a potential Israeli Ground assault, Senior Biden Administration officials are warning there are israeli counterparts to show restraint and avoid mass casualties and a humanitarian disaster that could turn the world against the jewish state. Meanwhile the u. S. Is working to get americans in the area home after a deal to evacuate citizens from gaza through egypt fell apart over the weekend. The u. S. State didnt has arranged chartered flights as well as ships bound for cyprus for americans who do wish to leave israel. Meanwhile Secretary Blinken is back in israel. He was there a few days ago. Hes returned to try to prevent the conflict from escalating. The New York Times cites three Senior Officers in the isrli military who told the paper that Israel Isrering a large f h scale invasion of the gaza strip. The times reports is riles goal would be to destroy the leadership of hamas, but the more detailed plan comes at the same time as a new warning is issued by iran. Axios repor that irans Foreign Minister told the u. N. Envoy to the middle east if israel follows through with its anticipated Ground Offensive i iran will have to respond, and now the u. S. Is sending a second Aircraft Carrier strike group to the eastern mediterranean, this one led by the uss dwight eisenhower. With this as the backdrop, worries about the humanitarian crisis in gaza, white house officials are weighing a potential trip by President Biden to israel to show solidarity for that nation. Ive got new reporting this morning. A trip is far from a sure thing. There are significant security concerns, but it is being considered after an invitation from Prime Minister benjamin netanyahu, and if it does happen, the president may go as soon as this week. Well keep you posted. Joining is live from israel, Senior National correspondent for nbc news, jay gray. Jay, give us a sense a as to the latest as the nation prepares for this potential Ground Assault of gaza as well as the egypt border potentially reopening to allow refugees to escape. Reporter yeah. And the key emphasis on potentially at this point, jonathan. Were in an open air market here in the Downtown Area of tel aviv that normally on a monday would be packed. You can see the tension in this city. Sure, some of the markets are open, but there arent many customers. Some have decided not to open at all. Theyve not opening their doors, put out their wears, and theyre not going to see the customers they normally see in this type of situation. We know the people here are anxious to see what happens. They did their job overnight, stopping air attacks, the missiles above the skies. Now there are shifts like whats going to happen at the border crossing, the advancement of the Ground Troops thats been building along the border for quite some time. Jay, give us a sense there as to the situation in gaza. Is there a sense that despite hamas threats is there a feeling some will get to leave, and is there a sense when the Ground Operation will begin . Reporter i would believe overnight there was excitement and belief that, yeah, that was going to happen starting this morning, 9 00 local time. We are now just after noon local time and theres been no movement along the border and no indication there will be. I think theres a lot of frustration, disappointment, not only in getting people out and the Many Americans assembled at the border, but getting supplies in, water in, getting things to the region to help the civilians on the ground there. At this point theres no clear indication. As you talked about, Secretary Blinken back here now in israel and has been working around the clock on the diplomatic side of all this, but at this point and at this time period right now, jonathan, its clear theres been absolutely no movement. With the crowds continuing to gather there, many see it as their only hope for escaping the region, and movement is going to have to happen in one way, either out of gaza or pushing at the border because its becoming way too crowded there. All right. Senior International Correspondent jay gray live from israel. Thank you. Well have more live reporting from the middle east as the day continues. Joining us now retired u. S. Army general twitty. Prior to 2020 he was the deputy commander. Good morning. Lets talk about what an israeli operation into gaza would look like. Theyve been sending signals for a weeks time now. There is belief it could be imminent. If they go in, whats the fighting going to look like . Yeah, good to be with you, jonathan. The fighting is going to be an enormous undertaking. 2. 2 Million People as you talked about. And whenever youre fighting amongst a dense population such as whats in gaza, unfortunately youre going to see noncombats invading casualties as part of this makeup im getting ready to characterize here. And so the israelis will have to go in, Fight Building By building, street by street, alleyway by alleyway, tunnels by tunnels, and it will not be a Home Field Advantage for them. Hamas will have the advantage because its their turf, and so they all understand the lay of the land. And so initially i think the it raleys will have a hard time getting a foothold, but they will certainly dominate once they get in and get an understanding what they need to methodically do entering into gaza city and the tunnels. As i said earlier, theres going to be tremendous casualties on both sides. Hamas, tremendous casualties, israelis, tremendous casualties, and unfortunately within the civilian population. We played President Biden earlier in the show where he believes israel would show some restraint where they to go in. He also said on 60 minutes he believed Israel Occupied gaza would be a big mistake, urged them not to do so. Whats your assessment . Do you agree with the president . I do agree with the president. I dont think you can occupy gaza, because if you occupy gaza, i think youll start to see the arab world start to turn toward israel, and we dont want that to happen. We dont want to create further instability in the region, so the israelis need to go in, hit their intended targets, ensure that hamas doesnt have the ability to fire miss aisles or conduct the operations they conducted this past week, and once they do that, get the place stabilized, then i think they need to leave and ensure that theres some type of structure there that can handle the humanitarian situation that theyre about to endure as well before they depart. Wed have to see the response from iran and hezbollah as well. Retired army u. S. General stephen twitty. We really appreciate it. Well have much more as Way Too Early continues. Next on the show, well turn to many of the civil and criminal cases against donald trump, including the case that could have the former president facing a second gag order. The faceoff between donald trump and his former Attorney Michael Cohen has now been delayed. Former President Trump was expected to attend cohens 250 million Civil Fraud Trial against him as cohen took the stand, but that testimony has now been delayed because of an unspecified healthrelated issue. Cohen told nbc news he will reschedule. Its unclear if trump will still attend the trial this week. Hes scheduled to be in new york in the coming days for a deposition in a separate case. Meanwhile the judge overseeing trumps federal election disruption case in washington will hold a hearing today on a petition for some sort of gag order. The Washington Post is reporting that the prosecutors requested the gag. They worry that the former president s inflammatory comments could prejudice potential jurors or intimidate witnesses. Trumps team for their part has argued that any sort of gag order would violate the former president s Constitutional Rights to Freedom Of Speech particularly as he is running for office again. The judge could issue a ruling as early as today. Elsewhere, hollywood is mourning the loss of beloved actress Suzanne Somers. The battle for a new House Speaker takes a potentially pivotal key step tomorrow. Thats when republicans plan to hold a House Floor Vote on congressman jim jordan of ohio for the position. Jordan won the gop nomination for the speakership late last week, but the Wall Street Journal reports two tallies on friday shows jim jordan has some steep challenges. In the initial internal vote that afternoon jim jordan defeated austin scott of georgia to become the partys nominee for speaker. In the second vote, 152 republicans said they would vote for jordan On The House Floor, but 55 were opposed. That is far more than enough to deny jordan the gavel. At the same time, republican congressman mike johnson of louisiana is already laying the groundwork to seek the speakers gavel if jordan is unable to get the needed 217 votes On The House Floor. Joining us now, congressional reporter from politico and the lead writer for the huddle news letter, danielle diaz. Great to see you this morning. Lets talk about jim jordan. Theres been some problems voiced with his candidacy including Donald Trumps support for efforts to overturn the 2020 election. His team has been whipping votes. Whats the latest . Whats the expectation of what well see On The House Floor tomorrow, and if jordan is short on the votes, why is he insisting on bringing a vote to the floor . To answer your last question, the reality is a lot of them want to see a speaker is vote tomorrow for the sake of having these voters go on the record to talk about where they stand. Thomas massie last week told us he believed it would be good for members to do their votes, their conscious votes vote their conscience tomorrow. Some will vote for donald trump, some will vote for Steve Scalise, some will vote for mccarthy or nominate mccarthy. This will be the first time we see a evoke since mccarthy was booted from the speaker gavel two weeks ago. Thats what were going to see at least in the first round of nominations from the house floor. Were expecting that to happen at noon. But the reality is jim jordan doesnt have the votes. Hes definitely short of the 217 votes that he needs. You know, Steve Scalise didnt want to take it to the floor. Thats why we saw him drop out of the race last week. Jim jordan is willing to do this. I do want to note his aides say hes closer to 217. He spent the Weekend Making Phone Calls to members, trying to convince them. There are a significant number of republicans who were never jordans. Well have to see how that plays out tomorrow at noon. If jordan is defeated, who else is in the mix . We mentioned mike johnson of louisiana. Are there other candidates who are also potentially preparing their bid . Well, we know there are names being floated for they want to run for speaker, but its unclear right now who will toss in their name. Tom emmer is someone thats been floated. Kevin hearn was considering a bid. Eventually dropped out and decided to go for majority leader, but, of course, thats not going to be a seat because Steve Scalise is staying in his position and not running for speaker. The reality is republicans are growing theyre not sure theres going to be another name that could come up. If Steve Scalise couldnt do it, if jim jordan couldnt do it, its unclear who could be the next nominee. Of course, democrats waiting because they say theyre okay with nominating hakeem jeffries. He already has the majority, every single democrat for his support, but its unclear if thats someone, of course, nominated for speaker. It doesnt seem any republicans will vote for him, either, jonathan. This chaos in the house for gop comes as congress is not able to send aid to israel, and, of course t Government Shutdown looms in just a months time. Politicos Daniella Diaz joining us this morning. Still ahead here on Way Too Early, well turn to the latest Business Headlines with our friends at cnbc, including a look at the market ahead of what should be a busy week of earnings. Earnings heating up with a good chunk of the s p 500 slated to report the results. Whats the early take on wall street . Yeah. Thats right, jon. As you can imagine, investors have been watching the Geopolitical Development in the middle east very, very closely. We did have a negative close for u. S. Over the weekend, of course, people watched closely, and what we saw in asian markets was a decline as well. The nikkei down 2 . In the last hours things are looking up. U. S. Futures are opening up now in positive territory. Investors are looking toward the end of the week. Were getting plenty of earnings. S p 500 will be reporting some of the names reporting johnson johnson, netflix, and tesla. Dont forget, weve had a first batch of u. S. Bank earnings come out friday, jpmorgan, chase, and wells fargo. Well look to the days ahead. The electric vehicles passed an important milestone. Joumanna, tell us what it was. Thats right. Electric vehicle sales topped 300,000 for the first time ever. Thats a 50 jump from a year ago. In terms of where it stands in terms of the global number of industry sales, its still only around 8 . So even though things are moving upward its still a slow percentage relative to the industry sales. Heres something of note. Tesla Market Shares slipped to the lowest, this despite cutting prices. Interesting there, the analysts say perhaps in the coming quarters, they may see a pickup in momentum with the pickup of their trucks. It tells you tesla is getting a lot more competition in this space. We could do this segment just about every morning on taylor swift whos basically master of the university right now. She had a cameo on snl this weekend and also added another record to her impressive resume, this one at the box office. Tell us about it. Well, taylor swift always delivers. I think that is the main takeaway here. Another recordbreaking weekend for taylor swift. Amc says in the first two weeks alone, the movie has reached 90 million. Another record, the highest grossing Concert Movie ever, surpassing Justin Biebers never say never film release. So taylor swift beat that in just two days alone. Really interesting statistic there. One other thing that stood out to me as well, jon, nearly 80 of the audience were females. Im wondering whether you yourself will account for the 20 of male audience, if youll go watch that. I havent yet, but i did attend a screening of The Paw Patrol movie over the weekend. It was excellent. Paw patrol and taylor swift, shes got them beat. Still ahead, well turn back to the war in israel and the diplomatic efforts by u. S. Secretary of state Anthony Blinken to keep the conflict from spreading across the middle east. Welcome back to Way Too Early. The war in israel is quickly impacting the diplomatic landscape of the middle east and around the world. According to frances 24hour news agency, saudi arabia officials told u. S. Secretary of state Antony Blinken over the weekend they were halting diplomatic talks with israel. Youll recall, of course, in recent months the white house had been supporting the effort to normalize relations between saudi arabia and its longtime adversary israel. But due to concerns about israels retaliatory efforts on gaza, the saudis say those talks are over. If thats the case, hamas mission may have in some ways been successful. Meanwhile President Biden remained optimistic about the relationship between those two nations. The saudis, israelis, and understand their security is enhanced if theres normalization with israel, and so i think that its still alive, its going to take time. Look, its going to take time to get done. Its going to take time, but the direction of moving into normalization makes sense for the arab nations as well as israel. But its not just saudi arabia expressing concerns over israels strike on gaza. In a recent phone call with the saudis counterpart, chinas Foreign Minister he reportedly said israels actions had, quote, gone beyond selfdefense. Joining us now, president emeritus on the council of Foreign Relations and author of the weekly home and away newsletter published on substack, our friend, richard haass. Your newest piece is entitled why washington should restrain Israeli Military action in gaza and preserve a path to peace. Tell us more on your take. I think the president made that clear last night on 60ment theyre not doing things that capture most of the people of gaza. Thats one distinction that i think is central. Also, yes, theres got to be a Military Element to israels military policy. In the long run, israel needs a Political Part of its strategy. You cant beat something with nothing. If you dont want gaza to be the voice, youve got to open a political path to say if you rule out violence, if youre willing to coexist with israel, which hamas isnt, we can give you some of what you want. But that has to be an offer once the dust settles. Lets get your analysis of the threats we heard from iran over the weekend, reports that they have warned that if israel were to go in for a full siege of gaza, that they would have no choice, they say, but to step in as well, whether that means hezbollah or the Iranian Military is unclear. Whats your analysis . Is this bluster or is this something that israel and the rest of the world should be worried about . Irans threats, i take it seriously. I think it might be hard at some point for hezbollah to sit this out because pressure will grow, like why arent you doing something. That to me is a real concern. To me, its another argument of israel going in wholesale rather than retail into gaza against hamas. And i think it also raises questions to the United States if iran is threatening that, what might we do, say to iran, you dont want to go down that path. I think the United States could threaten i rehab with greater sanctions, for example, going after those such as china for buying its oil, not even ruling out Military Action against iran. Thats an awful situation it puts us in. We dont want a wider war, but we may have to threaten oneorr what do you make of egypts reluctance to assist . Look, egypt is worried internally. Theyre a country that lives on edge. That i have their own problem with radicalists. Theyre not going to lean forward here. Egypt ministered gaza until 1967. They want no part of it. Its been basically a problem for them, smuggling coming in to egypt, radicals and terrorists coming in that way. I dont expect egypt to do much perhaps beyond helping to arrange along with qatar of hostages for terrorists and israeli jails. It appears the countrys centrist parties may have won enough seats in the election to form a Coalition Government in poland. Give us your take on the fact that the right wing ruling party lost. Right wing ruling party lost its a rae minder that the push hurts them. In the case of poland, this is really good news for the people of poland, and i think the people of europe. And there was a sigh of relief in the Biden Administration as well. President emeritus of the council on Foreign Relations, richard haass. As always, thank you. Were the United States of america for gods sake. Were the most powerful in the history of the world. The history of the world. We can take care of both of these and still maintain our Overall International defense. Thats President Biden emphatically affirming that the u. S. Can support both ukraine and israel at the same time. Joining us now, White House Reporter for bloomberg, akayla garner. Excuse me. Thank you for joining us this morning. Talk about how the white house is trying to balance these needs for the conflicts but when there isnt a speaker of the house and a limit to what the u. S. Government can do. Jonathan, good morning. We are expecting the white house to put out a supplemental request this week. This is something we have been waiting for for several weeks. Initially, it was mostly seen as a package for ukraine. Obviously, since this attack by hamas on israel, its now started to include israel. It is expected to include both funding for ukraine and israel but also two other elements i think are going to be very important to win over republicans, who obviously did not support ukraine funding in the last measure we saw a few weeks ago, and that is funding for taiwan as well as Border Security measures, which have been a big ask for these hard line republicans. They have very much wanted to see that included. It seems the white house is willing to include. That. Weve heard it from several republicans over the weekend, indicating it is part of the white houses request. Theyre using this now to reassure leaders in israel and, as you mentioned, at the end of the day, even though this seems like it would have enough bipartisan support to pass, there is no speaker of the house. That is a key position in order to get anything be done in the house of representatives. That just illustrates how unprecedented of a situation that we are in because it is very unclear what the speaker pro tems powers are. There is debate whether he could push through a package. At this time, the house caucus is extremely focused on getting a speaker appointed. There is no sense theyre anywhere close to being able to do so. Give us the west wings perspective here on the speaker race. How worried are they that they wont be able to fully fund the government. The Interim Speaker idea with mchenry, is that an idea . Are they pushing democrats to lend a hand . What is the sense . Jim jordan is the nominee at this point. It is unclear and unlikely he could have enough support to become speaker of the house. If he does, i can assure you the white house would be very uncomfortable with him in that position because he has been openly skeptical about continuing funding to ukraine. Hes voted against it multiple times. He said that as speaker, he would reject it. With those powers, he could have potentially prevent any such bill from even being put to a vote. Even though they have not publicly said that, they said they do not have a vote in this fight and havent wanted to weigh in, i can say, they wouldnt be comfortable with a jim your jordan or those oppose the ukraine funding, in that position. Give us a sense of how the white house is balancing everything. He has a series of events on the economy. He was just overseas. Heading to colorado today. How is the white house trying to do both things at once . Totally. One thing i want to put on your radar is right now, they have been continuing to send multiple people no israel to show their support for the country, even though they have not been able to provide the type of funding they have with ukraine. Something the president is considering is actually a trip to israel. Thats something to definitely keep on your radar. As you mentioned, the president is traveling to colorado today, specifically to Lauren Boeberts district, one of the republican hard liners. He is trying to paint a contrast there, particularly on his inflation reduction act. He is trying to show how this is bringing thousands of jobs to one of the largest Windmill Makers in the country. He is trying to paint a contrast between himself and extreme republicans. Many americans cannot argue with jobs, investment into manufacturing, and he is hoping to create that contrast. Even though he is doing this in a very red district thats not likely to vote for him, he is certainly hoping to create the contrast. That is central to his election campaign, as well. No question there. There will be Real Security concerns about a trip to israel. This is a president who had a secret trip to kyiv. There is a sense that russia, once given the headsup, wouldnt try anything. Unclear whether hamas would listen to those warnings. Akayla garner, thank you for joining us this morning. Thanks for getting up Way Too Early with us on this monday morning. Jampacked morning joe starts right now. Theres limited fighting already on the northern israeli border, and i wonder, what is your message to hezbollah and its backer, iran . Dont. Dont, dont, dont. Dont come across the border . Dont escalate this war . Thats right. Is iran behind the gaza war . I dont want to get into classified information, but to be very blunth
