Cry of the campaign. We are going to build a great bo border wall. We will build a great, great wall. We will build a wall. Dont worry about it. We are building it. I promise that we will build the wall. And who is going to pay for the wall . Mexico. This new Shutdown Threat happening as the governments deadline to separate united families with their children has come and gone and more than 700 children have not been reunited and Boris Sanchez is joining us live from new jersey near where the president is spending the weekend on his golf resort there in bedminster and tell us more about trumps Point Of View and strategy here. Hey, there, fred. Some say that the time is a flat circle, and we are right back to where we were a few months ago and really starting a year ago around september when congress had to begin passing the continuing resolutions, because they could not agree on the budget. The government was shutdown for a brief period earlier in the year, and almost took a second before they found something that he would sign. When he signed the Funding Agreement from the government, he complained about the funding for border wall, and it appears that he is ready to do the whole thing again. On twitter he wrote, i would be willing to shutdown the government if the democrats do not give us the votes for the Border Security which includes the wall. The president going a step further calling on kocongress t say that they must act on fixing the dumbest and the worst Immigration Laws anywhere in the world. This is a separate tweet, and he says vote r, and r is of course for republican. And the president is trying to make immigration an issue in the midterm elections, but not all of the republicans are on board with this threat to shutdown the government. I listened to ron johnson a so where we are to dday is best encapsulated by the story of the woman we will call alejandra who came to the u. S. And crossed the border a month and half ago with her 6yearold daughter and fleeing Gang Violence in honduras. They were detained, separated. Ten days ago, alejandra was told that she would be reunited with her daughter that day and given the paperwork for her release, but it did not happen. She is still in the Detention Facility here in texas, and her daughter is in a facility in new york. When she is going to look for answers, this is what she is told. Translator the first thing they ask is always, do you know when it will be . When my girl will be brought here to be unified with me, and they tell me, no, i dont know anything. They say to me. Reporter through this 10day period of olimbo that alejandra has been in, she has been told by her daughters attorney that hss has raised a red flag in her daughters case holding up the process, and hss is telling cnn that they will not comment on the specific cases, because spokesperson said that people in i. C. E. Custody have concerns of safety or parentage, and the office of settlement is going to be continuing to work on a casebycase basis and will continue to put the Children First in the proprocess. As i said, no two stories are the same for the families and ti timing is everything. Yesterday, i met another mother and daughter here in mcallen and they had crossed the border and spent a month fleeing el s el salvador getting here, and when they crossed the border, they were detained briefly and never separated. They were getting on a bus to go to indianapolis to meet up with Family Members there, and there they are going to await together the first court date. Fred, the confusion continues through this story as it has for months now, and many still looking for the answers and finding them very difficult to get. Kaylee hartung, thank you so much in mcallen, texas. Lets talk about the politics of what is happening on the border, and i am joined by julian zelitser, and so when people started to learn about this there was a outrage and then a lull. One has to be wondering how this is going to be overlooked and how this circumstance could benefit President Trump or anyone who has been okay with this. Yeah, i mean, initially, there was with a really big backlash and a moeshl mobilization to do something and the energy fade and the problem is the still there, and really a tragic moment for the country. This is not good politically obviously for republicans, and that is why many republicans are uneasy hearing this story come back with this tweet which will remind us of the situation and many children still. Yes, i want to bring in cnn political commentator Peter Bin Heart binehart, and the president threatening a Government Shutdown if he does not get the wall. And speaker ryan saying that the president needs to be patient. We walked the president through the strategy of appropriations for the fiscal can year, and he agreed with the strategy, so we believe that we have a unified strategy to get as many Appropriations Bills done as possible. As far as the wall is going, we have some wall funding under way that is being funded, but it is not a question of the, but it is a question of when, and in the the president willing to be patient that we get what we need so that we can get that done. So a couple of things. Is this patience, and then why is it okay that there might be funding for this when the president on the Campaign Trail was saying that the u. S. Taxpayers will never pay for this . Is congress saying it is okay now . I mean, it is almost hard to keep up with these things. First of all, i dont think that anybody believed the president s threats any more. And one thing about the threats, it is not a good idea to make them unless you are willing to the back them up, and what we have seen with him domestically and internationally is that he is going to be making the threats and then he does not remember that he made them so the threats dont have credibility, and secondly, how politically effective to shutdown the government when the republicans are controlling every branch of the federal government, and that is not seeming like a great strategy going into the midterm election, and just on the policies, also, remember that almost nobody who studies immigration thinks that a wall would actually anything anyway, and so there is virtually no immigration coming from mexico anyway, and most of the people coming from Central America are seeking asylum which they have the right to do and whether we have a wall or not. So, julian, how do you see this the . Is it the president who is looking or thinking about making these moves while thinking about the midterms or is he making the moves because he is thinking about what he promised on the Campaign Trail and delivering on that and then perhaps the message of odelivering on that might benefit everyone who is running. I think that part of it is a miscalculation on his part that he going to be able to excite the base through these kinds of issues, and therefore match the enthu enthusiasm that is going to be with a lot of democrats going into november. That is miscalculation with these issues, and the second is that the president is not that committed to the republican party. He is thinking of 2020 and he is thinking of what is going to benefit him and this very well might, but it could be different than what is going to be happening in november, and that is why the republicans, you know, defending over 40 seats might find themselves in a bind. And so, peter sh, the party seems committed to him, the president. Yes. Donald trump is exceptionally popular among the republicans, and that is, you know, one of the big political strengths, and the problem that the Lp Republicans have is that a lot of the key seats defending in places like california, new york, new jersey are not solidly Republican Trump seats. They are seats where people have a lot of ambivalence and even hostility for donald trump, and so for those embattled members of congress, this kind of the focus by donald trump on the kind of the rearing up the base m may not be so valuable for them. Peter beinart and julian z t zeltin, thank you. And why this issue may come down to decorum next. Making cars lighter, its a good place to start, advanced oils for those hardworking parts. Fuels that go further so drivers pump less. Improving efficiency is what we do best. Energy lives here. And try Febreze Small Spaces to clean away odors for up to 30 days. Breathe happy with febreze. At crowne plaza, we know Business Travel isnt just business. Theres this. A bit of this. Why not . Your hotel should make it easy to do all the things you do. Which is what we do. Crowne plaza. Were all business, mostly. All right. Welcome back. President trump revealed in a tweet today what was supposed to have been an off of the record meeting with a New York Times publisher earlier in the month saying that quote, had a very good and interesting meeting at the white house with a. G. Sultzburger at the white house and spent a lot of time talking about the fake news getting out to the media and how it has morph morphed into the enemy of the people. Sad. That tweet prompted sulzberg er to say in part, the main purpose to accept the meeting was to talk about the president s troubling antipress rhetoric and i told him that i thought that his language was not just divisive, but increasingly da dangerous, and although the phrase fake news is untrue and harmful, i am far more concern canned about his labeling journalists the enemy of the people. I warned that this inflammatory how he is upset from the negative coverage from the failing New York Times and the washington post, and calling the reports on the internal government pages unpatriotic, and that is stunning to hear from the american president. What is more stunning is that we have become seemingly so president calling the normal course of reporting somehow unpatriotic, because as we know that without the reporters we would not know everything from the Watergate Scandal to Hillary Clintons private email server, but that is what the president uses when he needs a booster from the base. And the press is an extension of the american people, and that kind of ooaccess to the president and reporting is all about transparency, but what is interesting from the tweet of the president it is like he is taking the approach of getting the upper hand and letting people know that i gave the New York Times the what for, but maybe he did not expect that salzberger would come back to a say, this is a more specific tick tock of the conversation and i helped convey how dangerous this kind of the antipress rhetoric is. So this week, you know, just an extension of what the president has kind of threatened for a long time and not really liking the press, the white house banned cnn reporter Kaitlan Collins who was representing all of the networks as a Pool Reporter when she asked questions, and then later the white house telling her that she would not be a part of the rose garden event. The white house said it was in retaliation, you know, but the same time this is very problematic, because the press as a whole has corralled around by saying this is not good. So take a listen to this exchange Involving Maria Bart Romo earlier. I dont know this as a fact, but it probably came from the president. He likes to be respected and he was probably frustratedt that moment, but what i would do in a situation like that is to pull the tape of questions that Sam Donaldson screamed at Ronald Reagan and go right through the last 30 years of the Pool Reporters asking can questions that president s think are obnoxious or untorrid or disrespectful questions and point out that she was doing the job. This administration believes in the freedom of the press. President trump and our entire administration have provided exra troord their access extraordinary access, and the president answers so many questions in so many settings, and i assure you that we will continue to do that, but maintaining the decorum that is due at the white house is an issue that will continue to work for, but i am confident that whether it be with that network or any network or any members of the media that he that we will work in the way that the ensures the access of the american people. And on this day, she was the pool report, and actually representing all of us, and did you feel like kicking her out kicked out everybody . I would leave that decision to the white house staff and i just remain very confident. So is there a way to kind of gauge the consensus here about whether, you know, people are accepting how the white house handled this involving the reporter . No, the broad consensus is that it is a retaliatory move against cnn and kaitlan, because cnn is doing the job in reporting the news and sometimes it is negative for the president , and sometimes it is positive, but ultimately we report the news as we see it, and any reporter in Washington Is G is going to tell you that kaitlans questions which were caught on video were totally normal for the type of the Pool Spray Situation they were in. She was not shouting obscenities or shouting necessarily over anybody else, and asking questions about news of the day, and any Pool Reporter would have done that in the situation. And that had been tweeted out, and so it was an opportunity for the followup. And the president answers these questions often in the Pool Spray Situations f. He wanted to wean the press off of the questions and shouting at him when he is in the oval office with leaders he should stop answering the questions, but when he answers them, they will keep to asking them, because that is our job to ask the questions and get the answer and report the news. And that is it. Thank you, hadas gold. Straight ahead in the newsroom, heartbreak in california as a fastmoving wildfire claims the lives of three more people. Explosive dangerous fire behavior is how the officials are deskrik what tcribing what could face battling massive wildfires in california. 12 people are missing and 5 others are dead. They include a woman and her two great grandchildren who perished when the Flames En Ggulfed the womans home. The blaze has burned nearly 90,000 acres and just 5 contained. Cnns dan simon is joining us from redding. When do the firefighters believe they might get the upper hand here . Well, the conditions remain challenging, fred. If you want the look for the silver lining, we can tell you that the fire did not grow s significantly laos night. We are not seeing the explosive growth that we saw a couple of days ago and grew by 6,000 acres last night. That said, this fire remains very dangerous, and still very hot outside, and then tonight, we are expecting more windy conditions. Now, fred, every now and again, i want to point something out to you that every now and again, we see something that defies logic for the imagination, and in this case, look at the very long piece of metal that came from the pickup truck. We believe it was a wheel that just melted down. That is going to give you an indication of just how hot this fire was. In the meantime, again, it is very, very hot outside, and 110 degrees it is expected to the reach. And you can see what the neighborhood looks like this. Is Lake Redding Estates and one of the neighborhoods leveled. In addition to this, fred, you are talking about the number of people missing and that number is standing at 12, and that does not mean that of course these folks are presumed dead, but maybe a Communications Problem where people had to the leave in a hurry and maybe they left the cell phone at the house, and they have not been able to get in touch with the relatives, so officials are optimistic they can track some of the people down, and that number is going to be reduced. Right now the death toll is at five, two firefighters and three civilians losing their lives. Fred. Thank you, dan simon. Ahead in the newsroom. He said, he said, and Rudy Giuliani is accusing Michael Cohen of doctoring the tape that captured a conversation about payment to a former playboy model. At the president s former attorney and fixer Michael Cohen. He says that the president knew in advance about the june meeting. And also, the secretly recorded meeting of trump and cohen, and Rudy Giuliani said that he wants everybody to hear all of the tapes even as he railed against cohen. You call ed him an honorable honor. How would i know . I have not had a bad deal with mi michael, and i did not know that he had taped Conversations Sur Rep Tisch Shousely and grossly violate the Attorney Client privilege and por tetend to the recordings without letting the other person know. And how much of his place of work and residence relates to the president beyond the tapes . Well, i will see about if i can make it as clear as possible. We know of Something Like 183 unique conversations on tape. One of those were the president of the United States after three involving the mcdougal payment and maybe 11 or 1 others out of the 183 in which the president is discussed at any length. By cohen. Mostly with the reporters and all clearly corroborating what the president has said in detail on many of the tweets. In other words, that he didnt know about the payments to the either one when it happen and that he only found out later, and that cohen made them not for the campaign, and he did not like the campaign, and he said very derogatory things about the campaign and he said that i only made it, because i personally love the president and melania and that is why i made the payments which takes it right out of the Campaign Contribution arsenal. And so these are tapes that i want you to read. I want you to hear them. I didnt this think that i coul them out publicly, and the lawyer has a crazy idea that just throw them out there. And this is going to hurt them with the prosecutor, because as a former prosecutor, i dont want those tapes out to the press. And so you are a former federal prosecutor and what do you make of the claim of Rudy Giuliani that the Cohen Tapes Vindicate the president . Well, it is hard to know without hearing the rest of them, fred with regard to the prosecutors upset with cohen, and they may not like the tapes coming out, but apparently, there is no kind of protective order that he is violating, and it is really the trump team that waived the privilege, so it does not seem like it is going to get him in hot water here, and it is trump that would be affected. And so if he has copies of anything that were picked up in the raid, might he have other tapes elsewhere . That is certainly could pique their interest. I think that they are fairly confident that they got everything in the office, but that is one danger of him releasing these is that they may cause the prosecutors and the fbi agents to want to look a little bit more deeply, and, you know, get more curious about things. And giuliani said a number of things but he also suggested that the tape may have been doctored and cnn hired a Audio Forensics Experts ed primo and is what he told chris como. I believe it is incomplete, because we have a start of when the recorder was engage and where the dialogue abruptly ends and new conversation comes in, there is a editor and butt splicer there piece d together and i can clearly see that and i am certain with any forensic expert with the same qualifications would agree with me. So what made it that means that it is not an original and not a master and it is not a complete recording. It mean s ths that their conversation may have well continued beyond that abrupt ending and that other call that comes in . That is a high degree of probability that is the case, chris chris. I think that matches common sense is at all as well. Because it seems that they are having a conversation, and then something happened to the recording and what it is, we dont know and we cant tell from this and it seems to end on the word check. And so, shan, what is interesting or curious about any of that to you . Well, the word check is interesting of course, as to who said what. But with regard to giulianis accusation that there was tampering of evidence by cohen, that is not really the usual way that we would think of tampering with evidence. Typically, the accusation of tampering means that the evidence already exists, and so there would be a complete tape that had been doctored or altered, and that is not seeming to be what happened here. Rather it is more of a question of when he ended the tape. He would only know when to end the tape if he could predict what the president is going to say next which would make him uniquely gifted in that way. And so Rudy Giuliani says that Michael Cohen has breached Attorney Client privilege. And larry, cohens attorney say ths that mr. Giuliani seems to be confused. He expressly waived attorneyclient privilege last week and repeatedly and inaccurately as proved by the tape, talked and talked about the recording, for fitting all confidentially. Who has the upper hand there . I believe it is lanny, because the president did waive his confidentiality. I got it. And sometimes those experts need experts. On it. We look at comedy and animation and how some of the greatest comedic performances have been given by drawings not people. Here is a preview. Walt disney was the only one who was interested in pushing the entire medium forward. There is a reason that disney became famous. The quality of the animation was unparalleled. It was unbelievable. By the late 1930s, disney was now doing snow white and the elaborate fairytales beautifully done and spectacular and the rest of the industry was trying to keep up with disney, but some studios looked at that and they said, we are going to make people laugh. Loony tunes was all about gags and making you laugh. When they showed the cartoons in the Movie Theaters before the Warner Brothers movie, they would kill the way that the Standup Comedian would in a adult theater. You keep out of this. He does not have to shoot you now he does so have to shoot me now. I command that you shoot me now. The duck season rabbit season exchange to this day, if i watch it, i laugh hysterically, because you know it is coming, but watching daffy duck step into it every single time is absolutely brilliant. The time ing ing in the carts so great and universal comedy. You dont need to know much to understand why bugs bunny and elmer fudd are funny. Kill the rabbit. Kill the rabbit. Kill the rabbit. Bugs bunny is one of the most influential comedians of all time. All right. Joining us right now is Cliff Nesterov and who we all saw in the clip. I will tell you they have been watching loony tunes again with kind of new eyes through my kids, and it is really funny. It keeps getting funnier every time you look at it. So what is it about animation and why so many believe that it was bugs bunny who just might be one of the most influential comedians of all . Well, one thing to remember is that when Warner Brothers was making Merry Melodies and loony tunes cartoons, the intended audience was adults and not children, and they were shown in Movie Theaters and before the advent of television, so if you went to see daffy duck or yosemite sam or the seminal characters, they were soapers really befo really, and the people doing the voices like june ferae who was the voice of tweet the ti or mel blank who did most of the voices of bugs bunny or arthur key brian who did the voice of elmer fudd and many of them were in actors in radio sitcoms which were also adult audiences. And the voice of bugs bunny was a regular on the george burns and gracie allen show, and jack benny show. So they were experienced and comedic actors from movies and radio voicing the cartoons, so they had the ability to the entertain the adults, and they were trained that way. And so this is true of the all of the studios and universal who did the Woody Woodpecker cartoons, and again, they were made by the specific film studios, and they would proceed with specific movies in the Movie Theaters for adult audiences. Later on when they were return on tv, it was mostly children watching them, be that is why it is funny, because they were not intended for the kids. Yes, they are funny, but you cringe, because you say, wait, that is adult humor and the explanation explains it all. So while you had human voices, you know, there is something about the animation to allow comedy to be told in a different way versus comedic actors the and why is that . Well, of course, you could do anything that you wanted to in a carto cartoon. So it is inexplicable that a coyote would survive such abuse as falling off of A Cliff 100 St Stories and splattering on the ground and being blown up with dynamite. So you could do anything in the cartoon, and in the live action film you couldnt. That is true of radio as well. When television came in, in the 1950s, there were a lot of cranks who complained about tv, because you didnt, you could not use your imagination, and the same with Radio Writers or the comedy writers, because with radio you could do anything, because it was in the imagination, and with animation, you could do anything, because it was not real, but with the movies and the tv, you were confine and constraints in play. So you can be goofier, and sillier and weirder, and some of the seminal moments entered the culture, and the idea of seeing something that shocks you in the eyeballs of shooting out of the eyes for the beautiful woman and the wolfs tongue rolls to the ground, and that kind of thing has been done on the tv show or the live Cartoon Stage makes cartoons so fun. Animation fun. That is kind of the stream of consciousness, but then people get a chance to kind of laugh at themselves by way of laughing at that kind of animation. Cliff nesteroff, good to see you and thank you so much. Be sure to catch the history of comedy tonight at 10 00 p. M. Right here on cnn. S, and our nations veterans.
