Antiabortion activities, happy with the pick for the Supreme Court . And with the eyes of the world watching did President Trump pass the test in first facetoface with a world leader . Get to jim acosta here, youre in front of the white house. President took action to limit the flow of refugees coming into the country. Heres the president. Im establishing new vetting measures to keep radical islamic terrorists out of the United States of america. We dont want them here. We want to ensure that we are not admitting into our country the very threats our soldiers are fighting overseas. We only want to admit those into our country who will support our country and love deeply our people. Jim what more do we know . Sweeping actions in the executive order. Just going through them striking. 90 days were seeing a suspension of visas issued for people coming from the seven countries you mentioned at top of the show that have had ties to terrorism, iran, iraq, syria, somalia, yemen, sudan and so on and what lot of people are getting their minds around at this point is suspension. Entire Refugee Program for 120 days and as part of that suspension the Trump Administration is now ending the flow of Syrian Refugees in the United States. That program is over. Also part of this, Trump Administration is implementing what theyre calling extreme vetting measures. They want to have uniform vetting measures for people coming in from all over the world. Want to make sure that folks coming in are subjected to biometric screening and that kind of thing. Especially coming from the part of the world theyre concerned about. Don, one thing to point out to viewers, at this point all of the countries that are affected by this 90 day suspension of vees sas are muslim majority countries and when it comes to Refugee Program theyre saying Going Forward when they look at admitting refugees in the country in the future after the 120 day suspension is lifted will be a prioritization given to people who are religious minorities in some of these countries. That basically means Christian Refugees coming into the country will be given priority status over muslims or people of other religious backgrounds because presumably in most of these countries if youre minority person religiously, tend to be a christian. Sweeping changes. Havent gotten a lot of guidance from the white house on how its implemented and steps are. What is the reaction . This is a religious test. Is that how people are viewing it . It is. If you look at Senate Minority leader Chuck Schumer said there are tears flowing down the cheeks of the statue of liberty. Senator harris from california put out a strong statement, talked about as candidate for 2020. Make no mistake, this is a muslim ban. This executive order signed in the afternoon at pentagon but didnt get hands on the physical document until after the evening news casts were over. Well into the evening no Conference Call to reporters or officials coming out to explain this is what it this means. Just given executive order. Lot of it is subject to interpretation at this point and will be hotly debated on the sunday talk shows and well into next week. President always had first facetoface meeting with theresa may. What came out of that meeting . I think lets make sure we get the stuff out of the way that i think is important. That is that the u. S. And u. K. Are showing that once again they have a special relationship. President trump went out of his way to greet may at the portico door. Rarely done at white house and chose her for first joint news conference. Says a lot. Having said all that, differences on display. Theresa may made it clear wants to continue the sanctions on russia over invasion of crimea, thats something that President Trump is open to lifting. Well hear more. He has a phone call tomorrow with vladimir putin. And theresa may made a point of sighing you told me 100 behind the nato alliance. Interesting corner she tried to put him in in the news conference. Donald trump has said throughout the campaign and into the transition he thought nato was obsolete. Interesting diplomatic jujitsu on display by the british Prime Minister but lots of similarities and agreement on many issues. But big differences on display. Now bring in Michael Smerconish and author of lessons my father taught me, thank you for joining us. Mr. Smerconish, what do you think about announcing extreme vetting measures on immigrants from muslim countries, limiting the flow of refugees into the country. Religious test . It is. Im surprised there werent a few more nations put on the list to give cover to what is inevitable legal challenge that 0 will come on that basis saying its prohibition based strictly on religion and not geography. That was first thought. Second was for better or worse because thats a divide in the country, hes doing what he said he would. This was part of the campaign, controversial, seemed like he backed off his muslim ban pledge but in fact here it is, one week into the new presidency. Been any number of things that are transpired so many of us, ill take the heat for this, awaited the pivot that never came. He was zoint from the moment he descended the escalator at trump tower to this point of time to what he said and doing what he planned. Before you react, read part of this statement from your father in 1981. First of all he says nation is nation of immigrants more than any other country. Strength comes from immigrant heritage, so on. Re recognize that immigration and refugee problems require international solutions. Will seek Greater International Cooperation in the resentment reduce immigration. Policy is important part of our past. And fundamental. With the help of Congress Work towards a new immigration policy that will be fair to our own citizens while it opens doofr opportunity for those who seek a new life in america. Sounds a lot different than the policy we heard today. Absolutely agree with that statement my father made. But then we had 9 11. Then paris, france, then s san bernardino, all the other problems that weve had with the radical extremists, blowing up buildings and killing people. And i would believe that my father would make a completely different statement based on that scenario than the scenario he was making a statement on in 1981. It is a different time. And hes absolutely right. Question is, this isnt permanent thing, its a hold for now. So that they can we can see if people can be vetted better to come into the country. Yeah. I dont know, find interesting what michael said about his father for whom i had the utmost respect wouldnt go along with this. I shouldnt debate Michael Reagan on what his dad would have done. But youre going to. I cant imagine the gipper taking this position. Were in a different time and place. World is under attack by radical extremist jihadists. We werent under attack by jihadists back in the day. Do you think my father would open the doors to soviet union, people wanting to come to the United States of america unvetted . No. He wouldnt have. Look at time frame were in. Youre not saying people are coming unvetted are you . No but even the fbi said they have no way to vet the people coming in the way they need to be vetted coming to the United States of america. Look at what is going on in germany and france with the refugees going in there, theyre having problems. We see those problems and president is trying to make sure we dont have any more problems ill ask you if this is religious test. It goes against the constitution . But in the document he doesnt say religious test. Can call it that all we want but where in fact are the terrorists coming from . Youre right could have put more countries on there and maybe should have. But reality is these are where the radical jihadists are in fact coming from, living and planning to ive been sitting here with wheels spinning. I know if what im about to say leaves my lips, going to be a hue and cry but going to say it anyway. Would that stop you . I fully embrace the ling bo of radical islamic terror. This is not coming from the left what iin tend to say. Total victims on december 11. Undeniable. But there after invaded wrong country. Walked into and lit a hornets nest on fire. Part of me is saying we bear responsibility for the dominos that fell thereafter. And some of the folks now precluded from coming to the United States could frankly look at United States and our wrongheaded invasion of iraq and that was p beginning point and many on the right and left have argued that point. Originally going into iraq, right or wrong choice. Weve argued that for 20 years it seems. But look at last eight years. When red lines are drawn and we in fact allow the russians to cross that red line and nothing happens to them at all. Look at things that barack obama put in place. Look when he brought our people out of the middle east and allowed isis and rest of them to flourish. I got to take issue as father of three teenage sons im thrilled he got us out of there. Otherwise be there today fighting somebody elses war. And george w. Bush negotiated and said had to get out. Peter bergen has written a tremendous book and documented how this is a serious issue. But threat we most face today are individuals who are here, Many Americans who have become radicalized. Theyre the ones im worried about. My question. Lot of it is homegrown terrorism, not people coming from other countries. Social media and what have you, youre right and go over the people overstaying visas and work with those and figure out how to get them out. But what would we be saying if Hillary Clinton won, hey say open borders, live here and be happy the rest of your life. No. I wouldnt have been. Maybe you would have. We would be on television debating it. You have a president trying to protect america. I didnt support him for a very long time but we elected him and he is doing exactly what he said he would do. Give him time to see how its going to work out. If the world is better, were going to applaud. Its safe to say we would be debating open door policy. We dont have one. But if that was the premise. Producers are telling me to go. I was struck by the Trump Supporters you had on this evening and zrekt from both sides. Right on. Democrats mostly have trump dementia . I forget what its called. And on the opposite side as well. I dont get the people so hostile toward me saying why would you give them that platform . We had election in the country and 46 represented by guests i had tonight won the election. I want to hear what they had to say and issue of silos and bubbles is twoway street. But beyond that what bothers me most, doesnt matter if someone is conservative or liberal or who you support but matters if you are informed. I wont say those folks werent but a lot of people are just not informed and basing their judgment on things that are not true and on misinformation. Don hang on smerconish, then you. Facts have never been fungible in the past the way they are today. Share your sense of frustration. People watching this show saying the same thing about the left as you said about the right. I didnt say it about the right. Thats how its interpreted. But thats wrong. Just like if they are alternative facts. Thats wrong as well. Tip oneill and Ronald Reagan get together and get things done. Would love to see President Trump and leader of the senate get together and get things accomplished. Im in trouble. Weve got to go. Fascinating conversation. Enjoyed it. Make sure to watch smerconish every saturday. You better go to sleep to be fresh. Coming back, restricting refugees is it the way to be safe . President donald trump making good on a campaign promise, signing executive order today that limits flow of refugees into the United States by instituting what he calls extreme vetting of immigrants. President of the International Rescue committee. Lets look at this on the full screen. Signed this executive action limiting entry of refugees. People from terrorprone countries from ebting. On and on. Half from the current level by end of the fiscal year. Its a sad day isnt it it . America is no saver than it was but 60,000 people who have been through the vetting process around the world, victims of terror, arent able to come here and americas reputation as humanitarian leader is lost and propaganda gift for those who want to say that america doesnt want them there. Hasty and harmful said of decisions. Hard to get to america as refugee through any other route. Why wont it make us safer, many watching say people who come in looking to harm our country and shariah law and all of that. Good thing is i can explain the current system. Takes up to 36 months for a refugee to be vetted outside this country by american authorities. 12 to 15 Government Departments of the u. S. Including the cia vet individual cases. Biometric testing that was referred to in the previous segment means that americas choose the refugees to come and be productive residents and patriotic citizens. Record is successful. We work all around the world and resettle refugees here. I met refugees from iran and syria, arrived in the last couple of weeks. Here and grateful to make a new start for yourself. Youve heard what kerr had to say. Swift in response, going to mount a federal challenge to the executive order. Any success or symbolic . Im not here to give you legal advice. This is a nation of wilaws and constitution has to be upheld. Point i want to make is theres global refugee crisis around the world. Tens of thousands of people given the docket they cant come here and left in limbo by this and americas allies in the gulf and elsewhere having to explain to the population that america has shut the door on refugees. Sad state of affairs. You know the young girl they tried to kill afghan shot by taliban. And noble peace prize winner. Closing the door on children, mothers and fathers fleeing war and turning back on proud history of welcoming refugees and immigrants, willing to work hard for new chance at new life. But this is what Chuck Schumer said, tears running down the cheeks of the statue of liberty. This is one of the most backward and nasty executive orders that the president has issued. What do you make cover the new york daly news as well. I live and work in the u. S. , im from the u. K. One of the great things about america is it says it wants people from around the world to come here and make something of their lives. When you hear friends of america always looked to america as source of freedom saying its backwards step, its a chance for the administration to say it can listen. There was item that said cheney even said it would be against america. Even to schumer. There is an issue around the world how to take on islamic extremism and we need to be as strategic in forming policy as they are in the terror they try to spread. Defeat of forces depends on alliance of countries like this same question last two guests. Is this a religious test, which is against the constitution . Theres no question that executive order says in terms that religion will be privileged above other reasons. Politic political in cuba, dont get the same consideration as religious refugee. Globally how does this play . Change americas role and position on the global stage . Changes americas reputation and i think it makes its role around the world more difficult because of the alliances you need with countries mosting millions of refugees. Countries like jordan have a million refugees and see america quibbling about taking 50,000 and wonder what alliance they have. This is holocaust remembrance day, what do you think of the american president doing this on this day . Where the professional and personal come together. My family are refugees, dad was refugee to the United Kingdom in 1940 when the germans invaded belgian, my mom survived the war and many members of the family didnt make it through the war. Jews were slaughtered across europe. And yes theres a backlash and people are saying were afraid. Other people are saying we want to stand up, people fleeing terror in syria and elsewhere, we see ourselves from 70 years ago. People say living in different times now, people actively trying to kill us. Different time but in 1940, 1943, jews werent allowed to come to america. Only in 1944 they were welcomed in in significant numbers. Learn the lessons of history. Of course move forward but lets learn the lessons. Appreciate it. Always a pleasure. President sitting down with the Christian Broadcasting Network today for a wide ranging interview on everything from the refugee policy to Supreme Court to his faith. Bring in david brody, he did that interview. Thank you so much for joining us. Spoke with the president today. End of his first week as leader of the free world. How did he seem to be settling in . Looked comfortable to me. Interviewed him ten times, first time as sitting president. Came into the blue room and seemed at ease and comfortable. Its interesting. One of the things with donald trump all along, or President Trump now, he seems to be comfortable in his own skin and doesnt seem at all to have changed as president. So he signed executive actions today to limit the flow of refugees in this country, getting a lot of play. In your interview he tells you Christian Refugees will be a priority. I want to play that again and then well talk about it. Persecuted christians overseas, weve talked about this, the refugee changes youre looking to make for persecuted christians do you see them as priority here . I do. Horribly treated. If you were christian in syria, impossible and tough to get into the United States. If you were muslim could come in but christian, almost impossible. Reason it was so unfair is everybody was persecuted in all fairness, chopping off heads of everybody but more so the christians and thought it was very unfair. So were going to help them. What did you make of his answer . Well what i was struck by don is he interrupted as i asked the question with yes as in they will be a priority. Very forceful on that. Weve talked about this before, him and i, in previous interviews. But as president obviously words definitely matter and fact hes going to prioritize persecuted christians was pretty strong language, especially the fact he interrupted the question and got right to the i didnt know if hem and hau on the priority and open up to criticism but consistent all along. Did he understand. Many people see this as religious test of sorts about people who could be admitted to the country. How will your viewers feel about that . And does he understand that number of refugees that enter the country, 38,000 versus 37,000 christian to muslim, the number is up right there. Did he understand that and how do you think your viewers will react . I think what he said in the interview today will be sympatko with how our viewers feel. What i mean is reality is donald trump looks at things more in the broad picture or broader scope. Radical islamic terrorism, he believes very correctly there are islamic groups killing folks in the middle east. This just in don, we know this. Donald trump sees that as generality of whats going on, therefore christians are indeed persecuted skroefr seas, hes lumping those together and saying something needs to be done. Reality is christians overseas, last i checked, not going around and chopping heads off radical muslim terrorists, hes looking from that perspective. Especially if you look at population, less than 5 christian from syria and 93 muslim, 5 christian is the religious composition there. Estimate from 2010. So president is planning to announce his pick for the Supreme Court next week. You asked about that. Lets play it. Also its who is going to get approved. We have to go through a process after i pick the person that im going to be picking, who i think i know but not 100 . Cant guarantee it. I put out 20 before the election, these are the people ill pick. I think the person i pick will be a big, big think people are going to love it. Evangelicals, christians will love my pick. And will be represented very fairly. So when he says that evangelicals will love his pick, im sure hes aware whoever he chooses has to get approval of congress first. What does that tell you . First of all, evangelicals as you know voted for donald trump, number one reason because of the Supreme Court pick. No question about it. Its nobrainer this better be a good pick they gather around. And obviously heard of gorsuch and hardyman and bill pryor. Pryor having some issues as it relates to transgender rights so may have been a tipoff that maybe bill pryor isnt going to get the nod because theres been squabble in their circles about bill pryor. You asked president about his spiritual journey and god. I would say that the office is so powerful that you need god even more because your decisions are no longer gee im going to build a building in new york or do this. These are questions of massive life and death. Even with regard to health care. Were working very hard on health care but there youre talking about life and death and better lives, People Living better because they have Better Health care at lower price which were working very hard on. You realize these decisions are all so important. What do you make of his answer . Donald trump and i go back about seven or eight years or so. Hes a very private man about his faith. Doesnt wear it on his sleeve. Thats not shocking. Some of what he said today is revealing in the sense that hes on a journey. I dont think theres any question about that. If you dig deeper, if the Christian Broadcasting Network, were digging a bit deeper and we know the gospel has been presented to him on numerous occasions and talking about the love of jesus and all of that but were you surprised to hear in the context of health care and life and death issues . Not at all. There is a compassionate streak to donald trump. He doesnt typically wear that on his sleeve either, bun of the debates, talked about doesnt want anybody to go homeless in the United States. Gets him in trouble with conservatives, wanting to spend more than they want to spend. There is a pattern of compassion in the personal donald trump, the inside donald trump, the one that many people ben carson said there are two Donald Trumps and i think thats part of his fabric. Ive interviewed him a number of times, you have as well. Person you meet in person is not necessarily the person on the podium or behind the microphones on television, theyre often contradictry. Your interview airs this weekend. Anything else you want to share now . Quite a few things still out there. Sunday night 11 00 on another cable channel. Christian broadcasting network. Thats okay. On freeform on the former abc family. One of the things he talks about is tax reform. I asked him within the first 100 days do you expect to have a tax reform bill on your desk . He said not necessarily to sign but wants a structure in place the first 100 days. We talked about that and other things as well. Appreciate it. Thousands of antiabortion activists gathering in washington today for the march for life net not even a week after the womens marches in d. C. And around the world. Discuss now. Kayleigh mcenany, hilary rosen, thanks for all of you coming on. Less than a week after the massive dmongsz and today a large crowd of demonstrators in washington standing up for what they believe in, dont believe in abortion. Can you fairly compare the marchs . I dont know what the numbers were for the turnout, differing years, one year 650,000, i dont know this year, but i think theyre not necessarily opposites right . Because the womens march was about a lot of issues. If you look at issues they laid out, about disability rights, gay rights, civil rights, womens rights, lot of different issues and proabortion rights obviously. This was more narrow, focused on the prolife cause, specifically abortion, and maybe say other issues like assisted suicide but mostly about abortion. This was specifically antiabortion. Last week was lgbt and womens rights and health care and on and on. Would you say last weeks march mostly in opposition to President Trump . I think its fair to say last weeks march inspired by the election of donald trump. Planning it for a while. Something the left is very good at, seen organized protests, well funded. But we need to be cautious about dismiss the womens marches last weekend. A friend of mine wrote a piece in the New York Times talking about its reminiscent of the Tea Party Movement and may learn those lessons. Van jones says that as well. Comparison is relevant. We dont want to sit and gloat in glory. Im conservative and were in control and those are crazies marching. Theres element of that but also legitimate concerns that women across the country have about a donald Trump Presidency given his behavior and past statements. We have to pay attention. Midterm elections are around the corner. And many said that about tea party. Look at who is in control of the house and senate, lot of it sparked by tea party. Republicans in control in large part because of it. People dismissed them, said racist or violent, trying to cast them as that, or nut jobs. Some element of that but not overall. What do you think . I do think we are learning on our side from some of the intensity and resistance of the tea party. Big difference is tea party protested within their own party as much as they did in the opposition. But theres no question that last weeks march was a mobilization of the resistance against donald trump. I mean against the perception and fear of what he will do. And what we already have now started to see him do when it comes to Family Planning globally, immigration, and think our challenge is going to be on the left, our challenge is going to be to make this resistance mean something on ongoing basis. To make folks feel nervous about it. Like frankly we saw the House Republicans worry a little bit this week in their retreat about planned parenthood strategy. If i were in the Administration Im not political person or savevy politically but would be concern and they have to mobilize. Majority of all women voted for Hillary Clinton but majority of white women voted for donald trump. Recent poll all women 33 favorable, 57 unfavorable and 41 and 48 with white women. And will he be a uniter or divider . 34 , 60 divide, 42 and 51 divider for white women. I think if he does what skt ivanka trump has urged him to do, paid leave. Will surprise a lot of women. Someone who cares about right to be a working woman. I think the march on behalf of all women so they claimed, really on behalf of liberal women. Characterized by misplaced anger. Madonna wanted to blow up white house and ashley judd compared him to hitler and watched this march and women saying i wouldnt have been here now if my mom had selected abortion. I saw a positive message i didnt see. You can respond after the break. Well be right back. But then i. So, i finally broke the silence with my doctor about what i was experiencing. Its most positive day, youre taking two lines. Ashley judd, michael moore. Entire day filled with love, no violence, not a single arrest, huge amount of good energy. Wont have the characterization. Even van jones said disappointed. I cant accept the characterization of close to a million women coming to washington being in communities around the country and you characterizing it as negative. It was not negative. Was it tough on people who have been against them, was it tough on a president who has threatened their livelihoods . Absolutely. But it was not about random violence, it was about taking care of themselves. Lot of negativity and conservative women not welcome and Prolife Groups not allowed to participate its can they were invited to participate number one. Renounced. Heres the thing, people are afraid of being deported. People are afraid of having health care taken away, people are afraid of their rights being stripped by courts. Dont act like that should be sunshine to donald trump and people against it. Listen to president s words. President next week is going to appoint a Supreme Court justice if they get a majority votes will do all those things. That is the problem. I thought you wanted to say something. Problem right here. Problem is you have Trump Supporters say just listen to the president s words, what he said. Women did listen to what donald trump said, he bragged about grabbing women by the genitals, called fat women pigs, Breast Feeding is disgusting. All these things but just entertainment, and now apparently found jesus and doesnt say this anymore but can only go off what you said and i understand. Donald trump has said so many things hes not taking im willing to forget that stuff. Its policy that matters more. Theres reason they feel the way they do. One of the things i was concerned about, major prolife demonstration today and not talking about it, getting into argument about donald trump. Lot of those woim women not conservative, i have progressive women who are no the prolife. There are some women at both. But who did feel not that welcome because the march organizers did disinvite a Prolife Group which was short sighted. If you look at what Democratic Party needs to do, think would be better if more open to welcoming in women to the womens march for example who agree with them on Everything Else but disagree on abortion. Shouldnt be the issue that separates women. Maybe that issue is just so core to women this is devils advocate, i dont know. Im not a woman. But why cant people stand up for what they believe in. You are the polar opposite. But are you . On this issue. Not necessarily. There are a lot of kinds of prolife people. You can be prolife and doesnt want to overturn roe v. Wade just have i have to get to the top of the hour. Can also not want Womens Health care taken away in a planed parenthood clinic just because other monies go to a clinic. I got to go. Can also not feel abortion is right for yourself but not want to make that decision for another. Thats true. Do you agree . Im a guy, just want to make sure. Well be right back. Top of the hour, new show. My business was built with passion. But i keep it growing by making every dollar count. Thats why i have the spark cash card from capital one. With it, i earn unlimited 2 cash back on all of my purchasing. And that unlimited 2 cash back from spark means thousands of dollars each year going back into my business. Which adds fuel to my bottom line. Whats in your wallet . vo do not go gentle into that good night, old age should burn and rave at close of day; rage, rage against the dying of the light.
