We begin with the politics lead and the president continuing to try to lie his way out of the ukraine scandal as sources tell cnn that the Current White House National Security counsel official will back up much of the damning from bill taylor, the dom diplomat in ukraine about ukraine being pushed to investigate the bidens. White house sources told cnn the president has a Communications Problem regarding this scandal. But truly this isnt a Communications Problem, it is a facts problem and the facts are bad for the president. So he seems to be trying to change them by lying and saying, for instance. That the entire impeachment inquiry is about one thing its one conversation that i had with the president of ukraine that was perfect. It is not just about the phone call. The allegations that President Trump held up military aid to ukraine and other things ukraine wanted in exchange for opening investigations that would benefit him politically including into the bidens. They are not just based off that one phone call, they are based on testimony there was an entire campaign that involved multiple Administration Officials and the president s lawyer Rudy Giuliani having multiple conversations with officials in the Ukrainian Government months before the july 25th phone call. President zelensky and his team were discussing the pressure from the Trump Administration to open these investigations, a source tells cnn. As for the president s repeated claims that the call was, quote, perfect, well that is a judgment call but multiple republicans have conceded it was not only imperfect, at the very least inappropriate. The president tried to lie that the Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell agreed the call was perfect and told him that but here is what Mitch Mcconnell said about that. The president said you told him that his phone call with the ukraine president was perfect and innocent. Do you believe that the president weve not had any conversations on that subject. So he was lie being that . Yeah. A source tells cnn that lawyers for President Trumps former National Security adviser are in talks with the three committees leading the inquiry about being deposed. He made some very big mistakes. Reporter bolton was fired last month, the president mocking him as a tough guy. Sources tell cnn that a former top deputy testified that bolton called the president s personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani a hand grenade who is going to blow everybody up. It corroborates a lot of the other information that we had previously about mayor giuliani freelancing reporter the ieng the inquiry will ratchet after others on the july 25th call between trump and ukraine president zelensky in which trump asked for a favor and brought up the 2016 election and the bidens. If you have somebody directly saying i was on the call and this is what happened, that is direct evidence that really causes problems politically and legally. Reporter morrison, the first person on the call to testify, is expected to confirm key elements of the testimony of the top u. S. According to bill taylors testimony this week, tim morrison, the white house official said he had a, quote, sinking feeling, in which the president insists that the ukrainian president needed to go to a microphone and saying he was opening an investigation into the bidens and this is another person backing up a key part of the testimony. This could be pretty damaging testimony for the white house a Current White House official willing to back up what taylor said. We had republicans say that taylor was secondhand information and he didnt hear the conversations directly. This could be someone who was directly involved who was directly in the white house who was hired by the president so he cant say this is a member of the deep state or someone who is an opponent of the president. Sure you could well the president may still do that but the fact that hes still working there in the white house and hes defying the white houses call for this whole impeachment inquiry to be deemed illegitimate and it could back up what taylor said and it is damaging and if you have multiple people back it up, it stacks up against the president. But taylors testimony is based on morrison calling taylor. So it is based on sondland and volker and morrison. Morrison is very important to hear what he said. Cnn is reporting, right, that two sources say that morrison will say he didnt see anything wrong with what happened on the phone call. That he told taylor, he didnt see anything wrong with it. So that is what is interesting to see, what he testifies when he gets up there. Does that matter . Because morrisons testimony is important. Does his opinion on this matter . Presumably it would. Right. The just kidding defense or oh, no big deal, ignorance is not a defense in the eyes of the law. It is wrong, it is wrong. And if it is about a quid pro quo, meaning that the United States is holding up something that is a vital of National Security interest to itself and another country for a president ial personal favor that is a problem. Usually in diplomacy and National Security, you use the tools as leverage to get behavior from another country and advancing another political issue. And trumps adviser said in her deposition that john bolton then the National Security adviser told her to tip off to tell the white house lawyers about the activities of giuliani and others calling giuliani a hand grenade who would blow everybody up and now we know that giuliani im sorry, that boltons lawyers are talking to the House Democrats about a deposition potentially. And john bolton comes up also in bill taylors testimony too. It is in the middle of a lot of these conversations that were having. You mentioned fiona hill and the challenge of doing business with the ukrainians. John bolton left the white house under not so great circumstances. And we werent sure what the circumstances were either. Exactly. Some of them seemed to be about invitations of to the taliban to camp david, him being upset about that. But the president didnt have very good things to say about him. Often while he was in the white house and then on the way out. And of course bolton said oh, youre going to hear from me at some point and this is one of those instances where well hear from him. Well see what he says. It is not good that all of the people are cooperating. Youve got tim morrison defying the white house strategy to shut this whole thing down and paint it as ill legitimate and hard to say that john bolton is deep state and against the interest what is American Foreign policy. And not a trump loyalist but works in the white house and was there because of an ideology whether it is regime change in iran or hawkish hardline policy so if trump was doing was underpinning what bolton thought was good for National Security, hes more likely to spill the beans. What do you think of the white house saying they have a Communications Problem . It seems to me it is more of a facts problem than a Communications Problem. So look, impeachment is a political undertaking. This isnt about the facts but how people in america perceive the facts because the house have to vote up and down on articles of impeachment and then the senate will vote whether to remove the president or not. And so unless there is a ground swell of support behind the facts, members of house wont vote for articles of impeachment and not move so. So now you see the depositions scheduled in the house the second week of november. Speaker pelosi said this will be wrapped up by thanksgiving. It doesnt look close to that. And then you talk into next year. An election year. You go out and read and look at swing state, some of the polls done in swing states, the focus groups, and voters are saying, hey, there is an election coming. Let the polls take care of this and congress focus on what theyre doing. That message resonates very well. The polling generally supportive of impeachment and the polling in the battleground states is the opposite. Stick around. But the president has another problem and that is an anonymous senior official is coming out with a tellall book features the president s own words. Im not a fan of never trumpers and never will be. I was not expecting him to bring this up at criminal Justice Reform and getting a lot of kudos for this bipartisan act and one of the few truly bipartisan achievements of his presidency and he seemed to kind of step in it a little. And it is not surprising in that way, right. The president is obsessed with an impeachment. Folks want him to keep on message and focus on the good things that his administration has done, he is there on hsbc in columbia, south carolina, likening himself apparently to africanamericans who are often the victims of criminal Justice System, sort of the inequities in the criminal Justice System, something weve seen him do before, likening him to a lynching victim which again is an inappropriate linkage because what we know about what happened with lynching victims, right. Denied justice and hung from trees for speaking to a white woman or anything like that. And so this is what donald trump does. I think any speech that he gives in front of an audience like this, hes going to mention impeachment and mention the sense that he feels like hes the victim of an unjust process so that is what were going to get. Listen, i dont understand why when folks go before africanamerican communities it has to be about criminal Justice Reform. That is just sort of a pet peeve. I think africanamericans care more about education and health care. Certainly they care about criminal justice as well. But there are a wide ranges of issues to talk about with africanamericans. And one of the things that the president said, he suggested under a democratic president , they would never do this to a democratic president , never go after and try to impeach a democratic president. Well, i mean, it was just a few years ago that bill clinton was impeached. Well, yeah. Youve heard this from the president. He doesnt feel aggrieved by this process and said this should never happen to another president again and feels like hes under investigation since he walked into the oval office on january 20th, 2017 so making that message and it worked with his base because they also feel aggrieved and attacked in some ways so the president made a decision hes going to have a base first place and he goes outside of the base like today where he talked about criminal Justice Reform in front of a historically black college but still reverted to this aggrieved messaging talking about the witch hunt, talking about people who are attacking him and he thinks that works for him and in some ways it does work. It was a headline on the post on the day of the inaugural, let the impeachment begin. It was a big the Washington Post . R ran a big post. It does have some grounds to feel aggrieved. Well every president has grounds to feel aggrieved, i would say. But david, the president said i dont have teams. Im the team. In terms of whether or not he should have a team to combat the messaging. It seems like you disagree with that. You should have so look i think the president is he had a great message here today. Hes done a great deal of work here and in a big bipartisan fashion and bipartisan victory getting this first step back done and doing good for a lot of people and you step on the message. So i do agree. I think there should be a better coordination in the message but the president messenger number one like hes the decider number one and that is the messenger. I want to ask you about this new book from the Senior Administration official from the Trump Administration who wrote that New York Times oped a year ago. On the back of the book, axios reported this first but were following it up to confirm, on the back of the book it said you will hear a great deal from donald trump directly for there is no better witness to his own words and no better evidence of the danger that he poses than his own conduct and the official was a frequent participant in meetings and accounts specific conversations and have access to internal notes. I think we would feel better if there was a name to the book to the author you mean. I guess whether or not there is a quid pro quo proven, do you think it is wrong for a president , any president , to ask a foreign leader to investigate one of his domestic political opponents . It depends on the circumstances. And let me explain, jake, what i mean by that. Here is what i think the entire case is going to come down to. Did the president ask for an investigation of a political rival or did the president s president ask for an investigation by possible corruption by someone who happens to be a political rival. There is a difference. One would be in his self interest and the other would be in the national interest. If the president , for example, had asked for an investigation of senator Elizabeth Warren, that would have been over the line. Because her son or daughter did not receive a lucrative contract after she was put in charge of the affairs of ukraine. I think this entire case, i mean put all of the bovine waste and the spin and innuendo aside, i think it will all come down to motive, intent, mens rea, did the president have a goodfaith basis for asking for this investigation. So, can you point to any other time in the Trump Presidency where this president seemed alarmed at potential corruption in any country, saudi arabia, israel, pakistan, any other country . Oh, i think the president is against corruption. I think we all are. But any any other i mean any time that he specifically pointed to and pressed a foreign leader to cut down and crack down on corruption. Mmhmm. I dont know about a foreign leader because im not privy to those calls. But for example the president puts together a proposed budget with his office of management and budget and they send it to us and there are many suggestions that they make to try to reduce programs that are in their judgment wasting money and possibly have roots of corruption in them. Youre a pretty savvy guy. You think it is just a coincidence that the person that President Trump was pressing who had alleged corruption and we should point out that ukrainian prosecutors have seen no evidence of wrongdoing by historically black or joe biden and it might be a coincidence that it is the current democrat frontrunner to run against him in 2020 and just that he heard about it and was legitimately offended by it and not because this is the person who could be best able to beat him in 2020 . Well i think it is more than a coincidence. Here are the facts that we know. Im not making any allegations. But Vice President biden was put in charge of the Foreign Affairs with two countries by president obama. China and ukraine, his son historically bla hunter biden walked away with contracts to both and the ukrainian charged mr. Zokeski and was in charge of burisma and giving him national Gas Operating licenses while he was secretary of National Resources in ukraine, that matter has never been investigated. Right now it is sitting in front of ukraines National Anticorruption bureau. Im not making any allegations. I suspect the president is going to argue and i think he actually believes, jake, that he has a goodfaith basis for asking about a investigation of these circumstances before he commits hardearned taxpayer dollars to ukraine. Well youre sure willing to give him the benefit of the doubt there the proceedings excuse me. The proceedings are entirely different story. Im very disappointed in Speaker Pelosi and chairman schiff. I think the philosophy of nancy pelosi and chairman schiff is gui guilty. I think the impeachment proceedings are rigged and held in secret. Why do you think that. Lets talk about that if we could. Let me i want to get your reaction. You sign on to the resolution in the senate from mcconnell and graham and one of the issues it takes with and you noted is closed door depositions and in the house and democrats and republicans are both participating but the depositions are there private. This is standard preet procedure when the republicans had the house. Take a listen to then trey gowdy just one year ago. Public hearings are a circus. That is why i dont like to do them. I dont do many of them. I mean, it is a freak show. The private interviews are much more constructive. That is how republicans did it. Thats not how i said it. I dont agree with congressman gowdy. Here is my personal opinion. I think that the hearings are purposely being held in secret so they can control the narrative. Chairman schiff with leak selectively parts of the transcripts that reaffirm his prejudice. We have no idea who is leaking just for the record. We have no idea who is leaking who okay. Okay. I think he intentionally leaks certain parts of the transcript to friendly moneys of press who suck it up like a hoover deluxe. I think it is a mistake to close the hearings off from the American People and so they cant judge the evidence. I believe that democracy dies in darkness. There are no opposing witnesses. If your a member of the committee, you dont get access to all of the documents. The president s counsel with not be there. The president s counsel cannot but it is that is what this trial will be for in the senate. The trial in the senate, that is when the president s counsel will be there and opposing witnesses will be there. And let me ask you, because were running out of time. But the Senate Intelligence committee run by your colleague republican senator richard burr also has a great many hearings and depositions completely in private. Completely in private. Thats true. Thats true. And democrats are allowed to participate that is the information they are dealing with classified information. Not everything almost all of it is. There is no there is no classified information here. Look, jake, i respect your opinion. Im just telling you how i see it and i think how the average fairminded american sees this, not the wellintentioned crazies on each wing. I think the average american is looking at this and theyre saying, look, were going to annul an American Election and impeach a president of the United States and were going to do it in total secret and not let the American People see the evidence. Sir, thos not what is happening. Can i finish this thought . Sure. Yes, it is. Yes, it is. Yes, it is. How many members of congress suffer from Mental Illness . None. They seem to enjoy it. That is what the average american is thinking. Well this is going to annul a president ial election and behind closed doors. What happened to democracy dies in darkness. So just two points and i have to bid you farewell, one this is the beginning of the process. Sure. There is a public part of this and then there will be a public vote on impeachment and then it goes assuming the impeachment passes the resolution, then it goes to the senate and then there will be a trial so this is not the entirety of the impeachment process just the beginning and then second of all, it seems like there are different standards when republicans are in charge, whether it is senator burr or trey gowdy, they could have depositions in private but when democrats do it, then it is nefarious and conspiracy and even though House Republicans are in there too. Well, i think it is conspiratorial. I think that Speaker Pelosi and chairman schiff have decided theyre going to give the president a fair and impartial firing squad and they want to keep the proceedings secret so they can selectively leak portions that support their predisposition and make it available to friendly members of the immediata who i said suck it up like a hoover as they did when republicans were in charge during benghazi.
