We want to hear from you. You can also make a comment via twitter cspanwj is our twitter handle. Alex rogers is with the National Journal. Mr. Rogers, can you explain what is going on in the senate and what is going to happen today and perhaps over the weekend as well . Alex the send it is in a race against time. They are trying to figure out a few matters. The first on the schedule is a trade legislation that is not time sensitive but that the Republican Leadership wants to pass before leaving for memorial day recess. After that, there is going to be a time sensitive deadline. The end of the month, the nsa bulk collection of telephone meta data will and by midnight, may 31. The administration has there could be some lapses if the senate does not pass a house passed bill by the end of today. Then, of course, there is a third item. A Highway Trust Fund authorization the house has passed a temporary two month bill there as well. So, they have a lot on their plate. The jet fumes, the senators are starting to smell them. Theyre trying to get home for the parades this weekend. Host alex rogers, what kind of negotiations are going on right now to get these things past . Alex well, what has happened so far is the senate has pushed for this trade bill and got it advanced only with some lastminute maneuvering on the Chamber Floor yesterday. You had a aband of senators who really want to get the Export Import Bank passed. That also has a time sensitive deadline at the end of next month. They got mccollum got the senators on board. That bill was advanced. And so now they are trying to push through today a bunch of amendments and maybe final passage on this trade Promotion Authority which would pave the way for future trade pacts by limiting congressional debates congress is not going to be able to tinker with these major trade bills down the line. After that is going to be the debate on the nsas bulk collection of telephone meta data. There are two Different Things that are going to go through. First a vote on the house usa freedom act which passed overwhelmingly in the house. Theres going to be a vote on that. We are not sure if that has 60 votes. It seems they could be nearing 60. Right now does not seem like they have enough votes. If that fails then theyre going to go to a clean twomonth extension which the gop leadership wants to increase their leverage later so they can come back and have a compromise with the house. The house is already gone. The house has already left. So they are going to have to be called back in session if there is going to be a reauthorization of this nsa authority. So what is going to happen after trade is these two votes on the nsa bulk Collection Authority to the question is up in the air if either one can pass. Host this is all happening today and potentially saturday as well, correct . Alex yeah. Although senator mccain told me yesterday theres a new spirit of reconciliation and compromise. He said the day of the week determines the degree of bipartisanship. They are hoping the senators of the able, all be able to consent and move forward on these bills in quick order. As you saw with senator rand paul earlier this week, some senators may be will take up floor time and talk about these issues. That was not an actual filibuster because it did not delay the schedule. But maybe some of these senators will actually do that when push comes to shove and we may be here through the weekend. Host alex rogers final questions. What is the role of the Export Import Bank in some of these negotiations . Alex sure sir. That was a kind of a latebreaking twist to all of this. Yesterday on the senate floor, you had washington senator Maria Cantwell patty murray, and South Carolina senator Lindsey Graham in a tight circle formed around Senate Majority leader mitch mcconnell. And then rings of other senators around them. It was quite a sight to see. What they have been pushing for us to try to get assurances from the leadership that theres going to be a vote in june on the Export Import Bank,w whose charter expires at the end of the month. What that bankd does, it helps ensure loan guarantees for American Companies exporting their goods abroad. Those three senators all have boeing as a Major Company in their state. They want to be able to see that companys success continue into the future. And boeing thinks the Export Import Banks updates to be reauthorized. The problem is there are house conservatives and some of the gop leadership who would not mind it all of this chart expires and think the bank is an example of crony capitalism. So there has been a debate on whether or not there is going to be a vote to let the charter be reauthorized. So what happened was after mcconnell gave his assurance to these three senators they all started voting one by one to advance debate on trade. Boom, boom boom. You had six senators in a row all vote aye. The trade bill advanced and now we will may be see this trade Promotion Authority passed today. Ior maybe into the weekend. But the Export Import Bank was a key factor in getting these senators on board and moving this major trade legislation going forward. Host alex rogers, National Journal. Thanks for the update. And, of course, the senate will be on cspan 2 throughout the day and perhaps over the weekend as well. We want to hear what is on your mind public policywise. 202 is the area code. Well begin taking your calls in just a few minutes. New york times editorial rand pauls timely takedown of the patriot act. He may have annoyed Senate Colleagues on wednesday but senator rand paul did americans a Singular Service by forcing attention to the fact that their civil liberals remain at stake as congress drifts toward a renewal of the patriot act that is likely to do little to rein in government surveillance programs is the opening sentence in that editorial. Lets begin with a call from larry in mississippi on our democrats line. Good morning. What is on your mind . Larry iraq is on my mind. I would want to know why some democrat did not understand what sneiorenior bush and colin powell did not kick hussein out of iraq. Dictators earl over the place over there. Dictators are all over the place there. Our dictator was mubarak. When i was in the military, i remember him about all that stuff. What is going to happen over there, the middle east and colin powell and senior bush knew exactly what they were doing when they did not kick them out of there. Look what is happening. Host that is larry. Here is the washington times. Obama considers more military advisors for iraq. It would consider sending more military advisors to iraq, although president obama does not believe the Usled Coalition is losing the war against the Islamic State here is how the New York Times. Defending issa policy, obama acknowledges flaws. Peter baker writes that that is the New York Times. The president spoke at the coast guard Graduation Ceremony in connecticut. Here is what he had to say. President obama constitutes a serious threat to global security. A risk to our National Security. Make no mistake. It will impact how our military defends our country. So we need to act now. After all, isnt that the true hallmark of leadership . When youre on deck stand in watch, you stay vigilant. You plan for every contingency. If you see storm clouds gathering or dangerous shoals ahead, you do not sit back and do nothing. You take action to protect your ship to keep your crew safe. Anything less is negligence. It is a dereliction of duty. And so, too with Climate Change. Denying it or refusing to deal with it endangers our National Security. It underlies the readiness of our forces. Host that was the president talking about Climate Change and National Security when it comes to the military. Senator john mccain responded to what the president had to say on the floor of the senate. Senator mccain the secretary of state of the United States of america said ramadi was a mere target of opportunity. Have we completely lost are we completely lost our sense of any moral caring and concern about thousands and thousands of people who are murdered, who are made refugees, who are dying as we speak . And the secretary of state says that we should not light our hair on fire. And what does the present have to say today . The president says, well, its Climate Change we have to worry about. I am worried about Climate Change. Do we give a damn about whats happening in the streets of ramadi and the thousands of refugees and the people, innocent men, women and children that are dying and being executed and their bodies earned in the streets . Host that was senator mccain this week on the senate floor. George is calling in from san antonio, texas, on our independent line. George i got a quick email from richmond, california. From the Surveillance Organization represented by derek robertson. Dr. John hall and also a few other concerned individuals. My question is why are cities and states adopting the Dennis Kucinich act of 2001 . Why is that still in existence . Why is Social Security given to people who are being torchedtured and if the preservation act is a true thing . Host this is jimmy in florida another independent. Jimmy i just got a comment with the question. I think i kind to figure out the Republican Campaign strategy. We all seem to know the Republican Party represents the party of exceptionalism, which represents whirtete america. Not the view of all immigrant countries, what unites us as america. My strategy, you know they got latinas, they got black, and a female, but they all got the same republican agenda. They are in bed with big money. It has corrupted this government. We need government. To keep civil order. Without government, there is no reason for our capitalism, free market to exist within the boundary lines without overstepping the smaller worker, the low wenend wage worker. The one that produced all the wealth or receive. My my question is, is it me or am i being too cynical figuring out the Republican Campaign strategy for this election . Host jimmy brought up the fact about money in campaigns. And that was doug hughes cuaseause when he flew his gyro copter to the capital. Here is a picture of him in todays Washington Post after his arraignment. You can see them holding up a fake stamp of himself. M. Rr. Hughes will be joining us for a call in and 45 minutes. If youre interested in talking to doug hughes known as gyro copter man, you can call in and 45 minutes. Joe, virginia, republican line. What is on your might . Joe first of all, does anybody on earth actually believe that Climate Change is more important to National Security and world peace than isis rampaging around the middle east and committed christian genocide . That is absolutely ridiculous. My second point would be that first caller was absolutely correct. We have a completely failed policy in the middle east starting with senior junior george bush when he took out Saddam Hussein and ending with Hillary Clinton and obama taken up qadhafi in libya and destabilizing mubarak and destabilizing assad in syria. We have replace secular dictators that cap control in the middle east and were not murdering the minority population. We replace them with isis. We have enabled radical islam to grow and gain power and try to establish their islamic caliphate. It is ridiculous. Host next up is peggy in morsel, pennsylvania. In morrisville pennsylvania. Peggh y i totally agree with the man on the phone. There are some problems in this world cannot solve. You cannot block people from doing things. And present obama is blocking things that should not be blocked. He should. You know, sometimes you have to fight for what you want. You have to fight for world peace but we cannot solve the problems of the World Without solving small problems. If everybody in their own home did what they were supposed to be doing, there would be no problems. And first off if the parents took care of the children instead of letting them run wild in the streets. Then when there would be no problems. If everybody did with they were supposed to be doing. Host what is one thing that everybody in your view should be doing . Peggy they should zero in on their own education. And not depend on everybody to pay for it. Host that is peggy in mi orrisville, p. A. John is next. In gatlinburg, Tennessee Republican line. John on this tpp trade deal, there is no trade deal to ever works in america with other countries. You trade with the country wanted a time. You do not do multicountries to get the better for our country. If we want another half million jobs lost in this country, this tpp bill, it goes through, that is what is going to happen. Peoples got to understand something. Usda stickers on meat in this country. Were going to have meat coming in from all over the world and we are not going to know what we are getting. They are going to say it is beef and its not going to be. As far as this caller from virginia you had, he hit it on t he head. America created taking care of business like we should do now and come home. Host one of the issues around the trade bill and trade treaty has been lack of transparency, the fact that nobody can read it. You have to go into a private room in the senate. The senate cannot bring phones or take notes if they want to read the treaty itself. Here are senators mansion and hatch talking about the transparency issue. Senator manchin the view of the documents they are technical in nature. Oftentimes without a trade staffer with out appropriate clearance. Here i am, i am not able to take staff are only staff with security clearance. It might not be the staff on my. Staff that had the expertise in this so that takes that equation away. We are unable to take any notes to consider what we saw unless we have a photographic memory. I do not. I tried the best i can to remember and look at things i knew i was looking for, but still yet it is almost impossible to walk out of there having the ability to evaluate what you just saw. Then were unable to talk to anybody about it. Even to my staff that i would like to get their input since i have them basically looking at the details. Especially the public, too, have no idea about any issues that concern them. The secretive nature of the largest freetrade deal in americas history lacks common sense. Senator hatch we need to keep in mind that every senator complaining about the secrecy associated with tpp has had an opportunity to read to the current text of the agreement. And the agreement has not concluded yet. They will not be until we pass tpa. I would be surprised if the same senators decrying the secrecy of the negotiations also believes that contract negotiations between unions and management should be made public or that it would be a wise negotiating tactic for a private citizen negotiating the sale of their home to post all the offers they received on the internet. My point, mr. President is that in the midst of any high stakes negotiations some level of confidentiality is essential to getting a good deal. Host from the health. From the hill. Senate Majority Leader Mitch Mcconnell is turning up the pressure on senators to make a deal on three bills, vowing to keep the chamber in session until its work is done. The senate is approaching a weeklong memorial day recess but it still has to finish work on a fasttrack trade proposal, expiring provisions of the patriot act, and highly legislation. I want to remind everybody we are going to finish the bill before we leave,he told senators on the floor. We are going to deal with fisa and highways. The senate could be in session over the weekend. They will be in today at 9 30 on cspan 2. If they are in session over the weekend, of course, we will carry that as well. From baton rouge a. J. Is on the line. Independent, go ahead. A. J. good morning, cspan. It amazes me how the liberal press lets old ldayady clinton get away with anything she wants to do. She answers how many questions and said she would run for president. How many questions has she answered . 25 or 30. If i was peter spicer, the guy who wrote the book cash clinton, i would get me some bodyguards and let other people start my car in the mornings. Youre dealing with the clintons. Theyre strange mean folks and she is now the head of the clan. Host ramona is in georgia. Democrat. Ramona good morning, cspan. It amazes me that mccain and all the government officials host turn down the volume of your tv. Otherwise you hear a delay and it stopped the program. Ramona better . Host go ahead and start talking. We are listening. Ramona it amazes me how passionate mccain is about people in israel, passionate about people here that pay his actual salary. They have not written any kind of laws that killed black men in the streets. But they mention the people dying in the streets in the middle east. I think that is detrimental to us. On our elected officials. Host sam is in manassas. Sam is a republican. Sam most of the people in this country do not follow the bible but the bible says they will not be a stone left in iraq. That means isis probably take over baghdad. And iran or israel will drop a Nuclear Weapon on them. You know, people need to read the scriptures. Christ said will always be with you. We spent billions and billions and billions of dollars and they are still her how does that relate to thise. Bush had to go into iraq so that prophecy could be fulfilled. No matter what we do, it is not going to work. So i would say dont send nobody over there and let it play out and then see what happens. Host sam in manassas. Usa today reports fbi expanded Data Collection under patriot act. The amount and types of Business Records available to investigators has expanded in recent years under terms of the patriot act who were not associated with the subjects of authorized investigation. The programs disclosure caused calls because of concerns it violate the privacy rights of innocent americans. Jay, charlottesville, virginia independent line. What is on your mind . Jay i was thinking, talking about the isis situation. What i saw happening there i thought was a good idea in my mind, i think what could happen there is a somebody could help their media, because of it was, if they counted themselves, you know good people then maybe they could integrate isis into their police force. I think that is where the problem was coming from originally. I think that is an iraq situation. If their media to control or whoever is over there to control the media not forcefully but recommendively, they could find peace over there themselves with very little military intervention at all. The only thing i would recommend for that is just let the media kind of say, hey, look, we do not want any more violence. Maybe you guy is starting police. We could set you up with a house. You can find a true purpose in life other than a military option. That is what i was going to recommend for the people in iraq. It seemed like the media. We could help giving them ideas or maybe some Media Technology to actually allow them to do th at. Host front page of the wall street journal is this map that show how the Islamic State has expanded its reach. If you look at all of the orange areas, here is baghdad. And the orangeish areas are areas of Islamic State controller support. Here is baghdad, here is to create takrit. And ramadi. Over here we get into syria. Palmyra fell to isis as well. That is on the front page of the wall street journal. On and off this morning we have talked about rand paul and his filibuster regarding the nsa. And Data Collection. Here he is from this week on the senate floor talking. Senator paul the Washington Post look at this and found that nine of 10 intercepted conversations were not the intended target. I think there was one estimate that in the last year we had 89,000 target. But if you multiply that and say that is only 1 10 of what we take, youre now looking at 900,000 records of people had nothing to do with terrorism. Did not even talk to the person. They incidentally talked to a person who talked to the person. It could be the terrorist called poppa johns and you called papa johns, youre now on the same phone tree. It can ripple out. That information should not be collected or put in a database and should not be stored. Because ultimately we are collecting so much information that it is all of your information. One thing that should concern us about simply going from a system where the government collects these records and stores them in utah to one where the phone companies are going to do it, it is some people in the nsa are acquiescing. That concerns me that the nsa is saying not so bad. It concerns me were still going to have bulk collection. The debate we need to have is whether or not your records, if someone else is holding them, if you still have any privacy, any private it privacy interest in your records . Whats in the water in d. C. . Obama wants the tpp. And rand paul hates the patriot act. Or they are smoking pot. Host nancy. Nancy you are my favorite moderator. Nancy you i have to get up early to watch you because you seem to take charge more than any of the other ones do. I wanted to say that the gentleman from virginia and that called was spot on about taking out the dictators. And i you stand back and get a Bigger Picture of what is going on, i believe that we have went into the middle east to satisfy the zionists. And for the benefit of israel. And people need to take a look at that. I am one of those people that thinks that we need to reopen and investigation of 9 11. And why building 7 went down. We have been bamboozled for a long time. America is being fleeced. It is getting harder and harder to eat. And to throw in a side bar here, i have to get a new refrigerator. Am i still on . Peter yeah, what about the refrigerator . Nancy well, the gentleman told me that a new one will only last me 7 to 10 yeasr. Rs. And the reason i will not be able to get it repaired after seven years is because of nafta. Nafta has because corporations to not have to make parts after so many years for these appliances. So we have to buy new ones. And i just think that is terribly wrong. I think we need to get money out of politics. We are being sold out. Peter nancy, you have covered a lot of topics and tied a lot of things together. Number one, do you not think that israel is an ally of the United States . Anancy no nancy no, i do not. Peter why . Nancy because we are feeding them billions of dollars. Mccain gets up there and wants to know where our moral compass is. Why are we allowing israel to kill palestinians . That was their land. Peter number two, why do you believe that 9 11 did not happen as the majority, the vast majority of people see it as happening . Nancy i do not believe the vast majority saw it as it happened. I believe they were told that was what was happening. And they have been told it and told over and over. Peter do you remember we did a segment on this program on the architects of 9 11 wh agree with youo . That it was an inside job. That is Available Online to watch. Nancy yes sir. Peter have you been personally affected you come from a manufacturing city. Have you been personally affected by nafta . Nancy yes i believe i have. Peter has your city been affected . Nancy most definitely. There are no jobs here. There are no jobs in toledo. Peter who do you like in 2016 for president , anybody . N[nancy laughs] nancy no, no. I thought i was going to vote in the primaries for Bernie Sanders. I am learning that Bernie Sanders has dual citizenship with israel. What is wrong with that picture . What is wrong with that picture . Why are there so many people in congress and the senate that have dual citizenship . Why is there some way people in our government that has dual citizenship with israel . Peter you know what . That is the first time ive ever heard that Bernie Sanders has dual citizenship. I knew he was jewish. Where did you see that read that . Nancy i read that online. I think counterpunch has it. Peter counterpunch . All right. That is nancy and toledo ohio. Our producer is up that story as we speak. And judith is in Pilot Mountain north carolina, republican line. Judith thank you. I want to speak to you about the usda and the trade act. People in the United States to not realize that the usda, the bml, are taking horses out of the United States and taking them to mexico for slaughter. And we dont know if that meats not coming back to the United States and being sold. And with the amount of medication that most horses that are shown in the United States receive the American Public, they dont know what they are getting. And the usda and the bml need to stop sending horses to canada and mexico for slaughter. Peter why is this an issue that concerns you . Judith it concerns me because there are wild horses in the western states that are being sent for slaughter. Theyre a tennessee walking horses who are being sent to slaughter. And some of these horsews are two year olds. Peter if people are interested in what youre talking about where can they reference this information . Judith uh there are a couple of bills that were in the house and in the Senate Last Year on slaughter. And there are articles on the internet. My main concern is that i along to the allamerican walking horse life. We are trying to get more support for the horse protection act. The act that senator burr and senator thom tillis are right now putting in the senate. Peter that was judith and north carolina. Irish eyes tweets in. I believe what nancy was referring to is the ability of all American Jews to get instant israeli citizenship if they so chose. Gabrielle is calling in from puerto rico. Independent line p review are on q a. Gabriel good morning, cspan. In regard to the first caller, the democrat, she questioned whether 9 11 was a perpetrated act by her own government. And this is actually a very very, very tense topic. When searching and googling my studies i found out that the government and the u. S. State of defense actually approved a measure to instate terrorist acts within the United States on its own people in order to rise up political dissidents against cuba in the john f. Kennedy days. So if the government was going to pass those and actually to get an invasion of cuba, it does not seem that far off that they would do it as recently as 2000. The second point i wanted to make was, again, the first caller stated. Is israel and ally of the United States . Is israel our best buddy in the middle east . That is another question that can be answered through history. There was an incident called the uss liberty were israel actually shot down, sank and killed a bunch of u. S. Sailors and sank the uss liberty. Again, these are all things, but they happened. Those who learn from history are doomed not to repeat it. Host what do you do in puerto rico. Gabriel i am a student at the university of puerto rico. I study anthropology. Host omaha, nebraska, democrat line. Hi. Caller thanks for taking my call. A nonnews story really because the republicans are actually agreeing with the president on something and that is that trade deal, the pacific trade deal. And obviously there must be some dirt in the details with all secrecy. I do not know why it has to be so secretive, you know. That kind of scares me a little bit, that secrecy, because if everybody does not see what is going on in this world you know, there is a new definition of slavery they are shooting for. It is not based on color or anything like that. It is based on the discrepancy from the top and the bottoms and the middles as far as income disparity. Its also based on the constant, what you see as influxing cheap labor and the outsourcing of good paying jobs into cheap labor markets. I feel it is a redefinition of the term of slavery. It is not based on that. I dont know why anybody cannot see it. Host shoe lady tweets in. We are getting a lot of this type of chatter responding to the callers. When i listen to the washington journal, i weep for my country. The internet feeds the low information types with garbage and youre hearing it today. Is her view. Victor says, i cant argue with rand paul on the bulk collection of data. Very valid. Lead story in the wall street journal. Major insurers are proposing hefty rate boosts setting the stage for a debate over the laws intact. In new mexico host manu is in l. A. Please go ahead with your comments. Manu isis and iraq. Iraq is the infiltrating by is is. The army of iraq. So, all of the weapons and equipment go to the hands of i sis. Second, our Prophet Muhammad said life of a muslim is sacred. [clock chimes] our Prophet Muhammad. Thats it. Host next up omar in terre haute, indiana. Omar good morning. I wanted to give a shout out to nancy in ohio. And tell her i love her. She made six or seven points and hit the bullseye every single one. I have called in and said that israel is going to be the destruction of the United States. Host omar, why, why . Omar because it is using u. S. Moenney. We pay israel 8 billion poor day, every day month after month. Host 8 billion a day . Thats 365 times 8 billion. Somebody do the math. Omar maybe it is 8. 5 million a day. Host 50 of our budget. Omar in terms of isis, here is my point. You need to go back to a guy named oded yinon. Theh plan the plan from 1982. And israels plan to break up every state in the middle east they consider a threat. You notice, peter isis has not fired a single bullet in israel. Isis is the brainchild of israel and the United States and turkey and saudi arabia. Jordan and turkey allow these spiders to infiltrate into syria and iraq. The United States give them the ok. They train in turkey, they train in jordan. Who pays for it . Saudi arabia. Somebody pointed out yesterday we were able to destroy iraq in a month or so. Yet here isis has no air force no navy, yet here we are giving them plenty of play. Yet, at the same time, making it seem like it is impossible to deal with them. Host omar, give us one website where you go to get your information in case people are interested in reading what you are discussing. Omar information clearinghouse. Info. Peter information clearinghouse. Info. What do you do in terre haute . Omar i am a retired schoolteacher. Peter what did you teach . Omar element tree school. Elementary school. Hank i think we started out with cspan has the most handsome men and classiest. Moving on to the real your story. There really is not a Real Center News story, because there are so many to choose from. It is like a chinese restaurant. Secondly that woman that called earlier about israel and the palestine. Palestine was an ally of ger many. That is why they lost their land. And you know, i think we should mind our own business and let europe, which isis is on the march to, take care of their own problems. We have our own. When is the last time you saw a palestinian or a person from sy ria that worried about a problem in the United States . Good luck and keep going guy. Peter v. A. Texas. I always forget what the v. A. Stands for. It is time to cut off all taxpayer aid to amtrak. Let it stand on its own or fall or soul of its assets to the highest bidder. Another tweet from tj. Some people do not believe in the scriptures. You have the godless left versus the christian right. I choose the right. Nb says let benghazi go. It is nothing there to see. Mark in dover, delaware p review are on. Mark you are on washington journal. Mark im calling about rand pauls filibuster about the patriot act. When he stood up and spoke, in my head it was an historical moment of the United States. This is the second time he has held the senate to its rules of actual debate and he has tried to make it so that they can actually talk about things, foe one for one. Number two the nsa is collecting bulk data of all american citizens. If they were collecting data on one citizen, that one citizen would have an issue and everybody would be pissed off. Because they are spying on one citizen. Because they are spying on ones on everybody, who cares . Everybody can have their information. There are clear guidelines and the rule of law on what a warrant is. Before the start an investigation they are supposed to have a warrant to get evidence. They are doing everything backwards now. They are going and getting the information and trying to find the evidence to start an investigation. If cops did this in every day local Police Authority we would have enough people. They would go to your house looking for people to for things to charge you with. That is what the government is doing to people would be mad. 50 of americans believe that the patriot act should be shot down. They should not have been renewed as many times as it has. The democrat media is saying, ran paul bet his 2016 president ial chances on this filibuster. It was a flop. He stood up for american civil liberties. Peter this is National Journal this morning. Obama administration. Senate needs to pass nsa reform to avoid National Security uncertainty. Senior officials made a last second push for the senate to pass a surveillance reform bill in order to avoid imperiling critical National Security tools due to expire. The officials taking their plea to reporters. The senate must end its print mentioned over the house passed usa freedom act and approve the measure before the Upper Chamber breaks for its scheduled memorial day recess. Any action other than the Senate Acting on the usa freedom act will result in very uncertain future for these National Security authorities, a senior official told reporters late thursday. The senate has been locked in a highstakes showdown over how to extend the expiring surveillance provisions of the patriot act due to cents at june 1. The Mass Surveillance Program was exposed publicly by Edward Snowden two years ago. Sam in crystals brings mississippi, on our public in line. What is on your mind . Sam good morning kurt how are you . Peter good. How are you . Sam good. I want to know why the media is not challenging Hillary Clinton more than tehhey are doing. The woman is line purchase has not been challenged with anything that happened on benghazi. They are leaking all the emails that supposedly was her personal stuff. I really believe there was a lot of information i nthere pertaining to benghazi and, of course, anything else she is involved in. Im just really, really, it just goes back to the fact that i guess she things everybody and United States are really stupid and, based on some of the callers ive heard call in, that is pretty well the case. We have got a lot of low information out there. I think the thing about hillary is shes someone that is going to lie chateat, whatever she can to get the presidency. Peter sam who do like on the republican side . Sam i like scott walker. I like the way he dealt she is in a blue state. Hes handled their Democratic Legislature pretty good. I just like what he does. And he is a conservative. Hes got christian values. His dads a preacher. Plus hes a green bay packer fan, which i am, too. I work for a National Lending company. Linen company. I am a sales rep. Peter sam, thank you very much for calling in and for watching washington journal. Big news. Hillary clinton took a question from a reporter this week. Hillary i have said repeatedly i want those emails out. Nobody has a bigger interest in getting them release then id than i do. I respect the state department. They have their process, not just for me, but anything they might do to ask that to expedite the process, i support. I want the American People to learn as much as we can about the work we did with our diplomats because i think it will show how hard we worked and what we did for our country during the time that i was secretary of state where i worked externally hard on behalf of our values and our interests and our security. And the emails are part of that. So, i have said publicly i am repeating it in front of all of you i want them out as soon as they can get out. Reporter but will you demand it . Secretary clinton they are not mine. They belong to the state department. As much as expedite the process that is what i am asking them to do. Please move as quickly as they can to get them out. Peter carroll tweets in, hillarys questionable conduct brings a revelation a day and is becoming overwhelming. Gop congress is now getting things done. Senate majority leader mcconnell says fasttrack authority is the centerpiece of president obamas second term agenda by promising democrats who would allow a vote next month to reauthorize the Export Import Bank. The panel mcconnell promised support to a group of Bank Supporters who huddled around mother floor before that presiding offers gavel to a close a vote to promote fast track. Once mcconnell pledged a vote on the reauthorization, a group of protrade democrats including senators cantwell, murray, coones, mccaskill and shahennen voted to cut off debate on fast track and advances to a final up or down vote. In politico, they have a related article. Canceling will test his power. Canterling will test his power. A highstakes vote this summer will test whether they have the cloud and the power to back up their threats. It scared Government Back lender which has sharply split the Republican Party, is slated to shut its doors june 30 unless congress acts. In exchange for votes on an unrelated trade bill, Speaker Boehner and majority leader mcconnell have separately said that legislation to rescue the bank is likely to come to vote. That is an political this morning. Justin i s in indianapolis independent line. Justin good morning. Peter hi. Justin i just want to say that im talking to the most patient man in the world. Peter if youre referring to the john oliver stuff, thats the other white guy on the network kand hes sundays. He does sunday. Thats who john oliver always plays. Justin speaking of john oliver, i wanted to talk about chicken farmers. She tried to get a bill passed. Dropped the mike talking to other senators in congress. Im 27 years old and i am not too involved in politics, but watching that episode of john all of her inspired me. It is pretty interesting seeing how the corporations like tyson chicken they give the chickens to the farmers, they give them the feed. They have all the control. And the farmer only has control of the thing that costs money like land and the labor towhat shes trying to a conquest gives the farmer a little more power and the ability to speak out and maybe have more negotiating power against these corporations. So that was my big new story of the week. I wanted to share with you. Thanks for being patient. Peter justin in indianapolis. Ronald is in philadelphia. Ronald how you doing today . I want to know why we are so interested in hillarys email. I want to hear emails from george we have got 6000 soldiers killed. I want to hear the emails from george bush, netanyahu, and Condoleezza Rice about how we got into this big mess in the first place that you have to enron disappeared and claim to be dead. Peter joshua, deer park washington, last word. What is it . Joshua a government of by and for the people shall not perish from the earth. The problem we had presently is we have analog politicians in a digital world. They do not believe believe that these two they are creating a surveillance will be used against them when any 12yearold with time on their hands can get a hold of data they dont think exists. We were warned by george bush the daddy that if the American People ever find out what weve done well to have the ability blood will run in the streets. Those were his actual words. Hillary clinton thinks 2. 5 billion and 32nd blurbs will get her a presidency when she is a huge pile of garbage. And the idiot republicans think the same thing. Rand paul has his fathers army, he has his army. They have the young ones between 18 and 25 who know how to put together teleconferences. And the thing is, wont matter anymore. It is coming to an end for the old oligarch. They need to quit stealing with two hands. They need to quit. I mean, give it up already. Let this country go. Let us go back to the constitution. Host that is joshua. Deer park, washington. Coming up next, we will have a chance to talk to doug hughes their gyrocopter pilot who landed on the capitol lawn. He cant come over to the studio because he is on ankle bracelet locked out. But he will be joining us from the pink coat house, which is, oh, maybe 10 blocks from our studios. After that, well have a chance to talk to Michelle Malkin. A new book out, and talking about some of the contemporary issues of the day. We also talk about some of the contemporary issues of the day with johnny isakson. A senator from georgia. He was talking about he is chairman of the Veterans Affairs committee. And he was talking about some of the news, cost overruns and cost of veterans care. [video clip] they are trying to build a va hospital and it is more than 1 billion over budget, which is really for hard for some folks to believe that something can be that much over budget. What do you think about the problems out there . Visits and belies the fact that the v. A. Has trouble getting anything done . It is a disaster. I took the Senate Committee to denver. We met with the contractors review the progress over the last 14 years. When the press in denver asked be what i thought, i said i thought the hospital was the camel. A camel is a horse built by committee. That is exact what that hospital is. There are too many crooks, not enough people in the kitchen. And the v. A. Does not need to be building anything. Their job is to provide health care and benefits for our veterans. I can promise you we will remove authority for the construction away from the v. A. And to the corps of engineers. Following up on that, the Senate Version of the spending bill for the a does include language the the a does include the v. A. Does include language on that. So you think that will definitely become law . It is not just denver, new orleans as well. Yeah, there are four hospitals where the cost overruns are substantial. As much as 125 over run. The v. A. Has agreed to accept construction limits up to 250 million. I think you ought to be reduced down to 25 million. Anything over 25 million is done by the corps. Washington journal continues. Host it was april 15. You might remember the scene when doug hughes flew onto the capital ground. There he is in his gyrocopter. There he is landing on the capitol grounds, flying over the capital by the Washington Capitol by the washington monument. Yesterday, the man was back in washington. He is still here in washington getting arraigned. There he is outside the courthouse. Mr. Hughes, what was yesterday like for you . Guest well, it is it has been nonstop for the last month. And the charges were pretty serious and grim to read but i am confident overall that im going to come out ok in court. Host so you were charged with six counts, correct . Two felonies and four misdemeanors . Guest yes. That is correct. Host so, what happens next for you . Guest well, this morning, i will be leaving to go back to tampa, florida. And they will work out my next court date and appearance. If we cant have a plea bargain, the net that point, they will set the trial date. Host we are going to put the numbers up, if you what to talk to doug hughes, we what to make sure you get a chance to. 202 is the area code. Divided by affiliation. You can see the numbers there. I think that is a video that mr. Hughes shot of himself flying his gyrocopter. Mr. Hughes, argue worried are you worried about going to jail . Guest i avoid mostly for my country. I knew that there would be consequences and i flew. And i am not eager to go to jail but this is part of a process that i knowingly set in motion. And i dont have any great fear about going through it. What a half therefore is the trajectory that this country is on. Where big money has got a lock on congress and Congress Loves it because they are getting paid off good paid off. We have to erect a wall of separation between big money and government. It has to be that their source of funds is funds from the regular people. When that is their only source of money, that is the only people they are going to serve. Host are you paying for your own law advice and for your lawyers . Guest right now, im using a public defender and that is all. And i am quite confident in my lawyer. Host what kind of support have you heard from the American People or what kind of opposition . Guest i have heard a few read a few emails from people who were angry misunderstand where i am coming from. Some of them have objected to the by john kerry and they misinterpret this as being a democratic proposal. What we are looking at as a movement that crosses all political bounds. I have gotten huge support from republicans. I did hannity just a few days ago and i got really strong reception from that. People understand that the whole idea of of a representative republic or democracy, whichever phrase you happen to like, is that it is government of the people that is supposed to serve the people. It is an overused quote, but it is completely correct. Right now, there is virtually no doubt that our congress is first and foremost answering to the special interest vans. We dont get anything unless it is something they are not interested in. They being wall street or the lobbyists or the big banks. We dont get any attention unless it is a small issue that is not going to cost them any money. Host lets hear from our viewers who want to talk to you. Doug hughes is our guest. About 10 blocks from our studio because he is not a lot to travel over here because he is wearing an ankle bracelet and being tracked. There is the ankle bracelet that he is wearing. We took a picture of that this morning. Roger in wake forest, north carolina. Democrats line. Go ahead. Caller yes, sir. I wondered if you are familiar with patty hearst host . Host why do you ask that patty hearst . Host why do you ask that . Caller because they thought they would do some change, too and blow up some bombs and shoe shoot cops. What you have done is terrorized a community. I hope that you appreciate the door of opportunity you have opened up. And there are countless ways to express objection to bigtime financing and campaigns, but with having children in d. C. , i glad none of them died while i am glad none of them died while Law Enforcement protected what they might have thought was a terrorist attack. Thank you, sir, so much. Host doug hughes . Guest yeah. In the first place, what i did was i sent word ahead. The secret service had checked me out the year before, so they had a file on me and they knew i was nonviolent. Ok . It was part of my plan that the government would know who i was in advance. Everybody is entitled to make up their own mind on whether ime kook whether i am a kook or a patriot. There are some really great groups that have been working on this for years. One of them headed by a harvard scholar another one headed by a media celebrity. And these groups havent been growing at the rate at we need for them to grow if we are going to actually resolve this problem. Everything that i am doing is intended to advance the entire cause of democracy for the people. And to continue to support those groups. But what i did in a spectacular way has really kicked the conversation into high gear. I respect the people who dont like the way i did what i did. I got a letter from one conservative who felt the same way about my stunt and he was opposed to it. And he said he 100 for my Legal Defense fund. And said, i would have shot you down. It is fine if someone disagrees with how i brought my message but lets get behind the message. Host a tweet have publishers approached you yet about writing a book about this adventure . Guest no. So far no publishers have shown any interest in it. It is a possibility because the story is an awful lot bigger than my flight and the issues are enormous. The stakes for america is a norm is. I am going to take whatever soapbox i can stand on to shout about this issue. If it turns out to be a book, i might do that. Host steve wants to know i twitter, why are you wearing an ankle bracelet if you have not been convicted of a crime . Is your alternative nobel . Bo bail . No bail . Guest no. The day after i flew, i was released on my own recognizance with a no bail and nobody. No bond. But they want to know where i am. Again, this was a month ago. They didnt know who i was or whether or not i was dangerous. So this is a part of a release on my owner cognitions. My own recognizance. Since i am in d. C. , they want to know where i am. I understand their point of view. Host lou is a republican in topeka, kansas. Caller good morning. I dont have a big issue with the reason you did this, but i do have a complement to you. You poked a hole in the security of our Nation National capital area. Big enough to fly an aircraft through. I had a letter to the editor three or four days after you did that saying you are to have a reward, a reward rather than a penalty. I still believe that. I am glad that you are on this morning to talk about the other things. Host mr. Hughes . Guest well, thank you. It occurred to me that if they had hired a Specialist Company to examine the possible defects they might not have found what i found because of my flight. But i watched the hearings on it. And the fa exley tracked me faa actually tracked me from the point of takeoff. I am pretty confident that the whole has been plugged and i dont hole has been plugged and i dont think anybody needs to be word about the security of the country. Host david, massachusetts. Good morning, david. Caller good morning. Thanks for taking my call. I definitely agree that there is too much money in politics. It is absolutely insane. I applaud your guest for what he did and the way he delivered his message. It brings attention to it, which i think we need as much of as we can get. Special Interest Groups have been gnawing away at the gnawing away at our laws, and they have gained all kinds of control. A simple example would be the fact that the new york Security Industry in 2014 earned roughly twice as much as the total income of all minimum wage employees in america. And that was just their bonuses. This didnt count their regular salaries. So another group of people buying their way into having total control while the people get nothing. Host lets get a response david. Doug hughes . Guest well, i obviously, we are on the same side. And the whole objective here, although there is a lot of ways that special interests are getting in the system so the problems are complex, but the solutions are simple. If we limit the source of money that can go into the government whether it is Campaign Funds or we limit the opportunity that retired members of congress have and half of them are going to work as they few blocks up burning a couple Million Dollars per year after they earning a couple Million Dollars per year after they retire, how can that be legal . I am not going to look into somebodys soul and say i know what youre thinking, but it needs to be illegal. We can erect a wall of separation between big money and government, then these people will work for us. It is that simple. Host how long have you been active on this issue . Guest i was active on the perimeter, as a person who reads about politics, for a lot of years. I kept coming up against the same wall. Things werent happening in congress because money in congress controls. And regardless of what your pets passion is, what your cause is whether it is Climate Change seniors, veterans, ok . You are not going to get fair representation on these and then you have to recognize it is going to be loud, it is going to be noisy, it is going to be contentious and you will not agree on most at the time on what Congress Comes up with, but it will be for us. Host just to give people a sense of your own politics, can you tell people who you voted for president . Guest i am a registered democrat. That is public knowledge. But as far as i know, the secret ballot is still in place and im not going to say who i have voted for or what my opinions are on the president ial race. Host a call from chesapeake, virginia. You are on the air. Caller yes. I am calling to say we are not talking about what should be talked about. The gyrocopter is an invention and that is something that is fantastic. I would not have known about that unless he came onto the white house lawn. [no audio] im like, i wish i had something that could go read about the wires and fly over everything go right above the wires and fly over everything. When i saw that, i was like, oh, my god. That is being deficit. That is what we need to be talking about. And i what one host doug hughes, have you heard about other people who wanted gyrocopter . Guest i have been careful to point people to the website pra. Org, which is the association for people who are curious about the planes and how to fly one. It is a fun line machine. I am an advocate of recreational flying and ultralights. One of my concerns was that what i might what i did might damage that. But by all means, it is a great thing to check into. Host up until your flight, could anyone find a gyrocopter and not have to worry about being licensed . Guest yeah, the i am not going to argue with what wind up what may wind up being an issue in court, but you can find an ultralight aircraft without it being registered and without having to have a pilots license. It is one of the opportunities that weve got four people to get into. Weekend, when the weather is good flying. And it is fantastic. Host cecil. Spring, texas. Guest the average person host im sorry, mr. Hughes. Go ahead. Guest i was just going to say the average person can get into recreational flying. Host cecil in spring texas on our republican line. Caller hello. I was just calling to say that i am praying for mr. Dark. Mr. Dark mr. Doug. Although i dont agree with his message, i do agree with his action. I dont think he ought to face nine years in jail. I thought he ought to get i think he ought to get a traffic citation. Thank you. Host doug hughes . Guest how do i get him on my jury . Host is the jury going to be here in washington . Guest yes, as far as i know. It obviously, this is one of the areas i disagree with the prosecutor is i think the penalty needs to fit the crime and i dont think the charges meet that criteria. But i am going to see things differently than the prosecutor, obviously. Host kim is an littleton colorado. Tim is an littleton colorado. Caller thank you. I, obviously, agree with you. Hillary is going to be the nominee because of those 2. 5 billion that is stacked up at citizens united. So, and we are indeed attached to the money. So i am behind your cause. My question to you is before you embarked on this, did you or even now, have you a line Public Relations agencies or has anybody step forward the aclu or any groups to try and put some muscle behind your message . You are the one that took all the risk. Is there anybody that is stepping up to try and support your cause and take this further so you are not just a martyr . Guest yeah, that has been one of the most heartwarming things. Shortly after i got back down to florida after the flight, i was contacted by someone who is considered to be the grandfather of the movement, lawrence of harvard. He asked me if there was anything he could do to help. Through his contacts, i have been able to get into the network of professional media firms and the network of leaders, groups that are working in various ways either through the idea of doing a constitutional amendment or other groups who are pressing for legislation, like the anticorruption act. So i have gotten into a network of supporters at it is something that is working both ways because i agreed to support those groups without the clearing for any one of them, i will support all the groups that are trying to move the movement forward. Host wayne is in chicago. A democrat. Caller i am sort of losing confidence in my fellow americans. I have been listening all morning and you have had the crazy side on today. And then youve got this guy on. This brain surgeon. You broke the law. Most patriots that believe in something believe in anything are willing to give their life for their freedom for their cause. So take your medicine and stop whimpering like a little coward, ok . Host doug hughes . Guest well, even before i flew, i declared on my website civil disobedience carries with it cost. And i dont think i have been doing a lot of whimpering. I could have gotten shot down and i acknowledged that when i took off. I knew there would be legal consequences and i havent whined about that. I am not asking for a free ride as far as the legal system is concerned. My comment has always been that the punishment should fit the crime. There was no Property Damage and there was no injury. If you go look at what people are serving for crimes, night and half years, in my opinion is excessive. That has been muscle complaint. Host what is your status with the post office . Guest at this point, they are investigating the incident and they are trying to see whether or not it affects the post office in some way. I am currently on a paid status and networking. Host have you heard from people on your regular route . Guest no, i havent. Except indirectly. But some of the carrier france that ive got have stopped by carrier france carrier friends that ive got have stopped by. One of them stopped by with a clipping somebody wanted me to autograph. Host what does your wife think about all of this . Guest she alternates between being thrilled over what i did and being anxious about the future. So, she is pretty much where any wife would be. Host vicki is calling in from west sacramento, california on our republican line. Vicki, you are on. Caller ok, thank you for taking my call. Yes, doug. Are you a veteran of any military like the air force, marines, or anything like that . Guest navy. I am a veteran. I was offshore for the evacuation of saigon. Caller [cheering] first of all, i want to thank you for having the courage to do what you did because the way i feel about the way things are going on in washington i dont feel like anybody is paying attention to what we are trying to tell them. And they dont seem to hear us. Sometimes youve got to hit the mule upside the head with a two by four. And that is a good idea, but if i dont feel like our government representatives anymore, they are not listening. And i think you have a lot of guts to do what you did. If only they would listen to us. And it is just really sad the way things are going in the country. Host that was vicki in west sacramento. Any comment for her . Guest yeah. She makes a couple of really good point. Number one, it is not just that they are not listening, it is that now that the subject is up there, they are trying as hard as they can to talk about everything except what they are doing, ok . It is going to be our job to push them, to push the media to ask the questions. One of the things that bugged me the most is that nobody is coming out of any of these congressional hearings is being asked where they stand on corruption. And im talking about the inside the beltway media. This is going to be something i am doing over the next few years. I am going to push the people at the local media, in particular, to hold feet to the fire and make the candidates declare where they stand. I would like to see that the voters have a clear choice in the next election, regardless of party, that they can identify the reformist candidate and they can tell that from the nonreformist candidate who is shoveling smoke. But that is going to happen if the media does their job. Host bill in myrtle beach, South Carolina. Go ahead, bill. Caller good morning, peter. And good morning doug. They say that america is just a Sleeping Giant waking waiting to get woke up. I think he is passed out on all the pharmaceuticals. But what you did a splash water on his face and that is a great thing. You didnt go out there and do Something Like Timothy Mcveigh or anything like that. You got a point across and you did it without hurting anybody. And you represent the aviation thing quite well. I called up to find out what it would cost to get one of those things. It is truly an honor to talk to you. You have a good day. Peter, i mean, handsome, you have a good weekend, too. Host last call for doug hughes comes from don in sumter, South Carolina. Caller good morning, peter. Good morning, mr. Hughes. Like the other caller, i am going to take my hat off to you sir. You displayed great courage and what you did. If there is justice to be just, it at times has to be subjective. I only wish i was on your jury. I hope care what poppy cat the prosecutors threw at you, i would find you not guilty. I did think the Supreme Court made a horrendous decision with citizens united, and you have my full support. If there is anything i can do for you, please contact me. And have a good day. Host doug hughes . Guest well, i think if i have it, i need to recognize the courage of the people who have been in the trenches working on this issue for the last few years. The problem is the solutions have not been properly recognized. They have not been covered in the media. I didnt fly to bring attention to the problem, i flew to bring attention to the solutions. What this viewer who said i will do anything i can my website which is democracyclub. Org points at a few of the groups who are doing stuff. I intend to continue to promote the movement. Go out, find one of the groups, find a solution you are happy with. Getting gauged. It only takes a little bit from a lot of people and we can get this done. Host you referenced the defense fund earlier. If people are wishing to donate to it, can they go to the website you just gave . Guest yeah. There is a place in the Democracy Club where people can contribute. Right now, i am using a public defender and im satisfied with my representation. So there isnt a Legal Defense fund and i dont anticipate going that route. There is a place were people can contribute. Right now, my future does hang on a thread, but that is not the point. I will find a way to survive. You may have noticed i am pretty stubborn and fairly resourceful. Host doug hughes, where did you grow up . Guest i grew up in santa cruz, california back in the 1960s and before the university was built there. Beautiful place. Host what are the rules for you to drive back to florida today . Guest well, i have got and i will continue to have the gps. And i am allowed to drive down, and they havent set a strict limits on how many miles up the highway i can go, but im staying within two or three miles of 95 south. Once i get there i will be able to travel around Hillsboro Academy in florida. So i will be able to get out and mow my mind. Host when will you be back up in washington . Guest there is a date set if you look at the docket, but my attorney has indicated that probably by mutual consent, they will extend that beyond where it is to get give everybody a little bit more time to regroup. And if at that meeting we havent reached a negotiated settlement again, let the punishment fit the crime, then it will go to trial. And i am comfortable with what a jury would decide. Host doug hughes, gyrocopter pilot, Campaign Finance reform advocate has been our guest here on the washington journal. Just fyi, if you remember a couple years ago, the gentleman who was referred to as tractor man, dwight watson, who drove his tractor into the pond and set it in there for quite a while sat it in there for quite a while, a tobacco farmer, he was sentenced to six years in prison for making threats and terrorizing parts of downtown washington. That was back in 2003. Just fyi. And mr. Hughes has been our guest from the pink house. He is not allowed to come from the 10 blocks over there to hear ghost of the restrictions. Host columnist and author Michelle Malkin is our guest for the next hour on the washington journal. The first line in this book many of you know me as that angry brown lady on cable tv who is always yelling at liberals. Why did you start their . Guest well, you know, i have built up a persona, obviously. Not only over the last quarter century that i have worked in print journalism, but to to make over the last decade that i have been on tv. You know, as a natural result of those appearances, people have derived at a site that i am always that, you know, that they want a person who is always yelling, always mad. This book, obviously, was inspired by the phrase you didnt build that from obama. But it is not an angry book. So, i wanted to sort of jar people right away and then pivot because, ultimately, it is a celebration of American History. Host lets go back to 2012 when at comment was made by president obama and what you built off of that comment. [video clip] president obama there are a lot of wealthy, Successful Americans who agree with me because they want to give something back. They know if you have been successful, you did it get there on your own. You did it get there on your own. I about struck by people who think, well, it must be that i was so smart. There is a lot of smart people out there. It must be because i worked harder to let me tell you something, there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there. [applause] president obama if you are successful, somebody along the line give you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable american system that we have that allows you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you have a business, you didnt build that. Somebody else may that happen. The internet didnt get invented on its own. Government Research Credit the internet so that all the companies can make money off the internet. [applause] president obama the point is is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together. Host listening to that, you have been shaking her head. Guest yeah. I am ending up with a smile on my face only because i feel pity for the president. Because i felt that entire diatribe to be both historically ignorant and demagoguery. I think people often forget, and im so glad you paid that passage in its entirety, because it wasnt merely about our drink that other people helped you really about arguing that other people helped you. You can hear the contempt that he has in the ultimate news who firmly believe, and rightly so, that is their initiative. It is the individual conception and drive of these makers and builders that provide innovation. And i am chilled and i hope every entrepreneur who is responsible for he for a business he or she has built is also chilled by the fact that there was a round of applause and clapping when he said in that sneering little tone of his, you think you are so smart . You think you work harder . Well actually president obama, there are certainly people smarter than him and smarter than me who have done good we think they are responsible for innovation in america. Host from the book, profit is not treated as a profanity in todays class warfare poisoned this course. Those who seek financial enrichment for the fruits of their labor and creativity, you write, are cast as selfless parent and tasteless beasts. Guest yes. And that kind of wealth shaming this idea that people should be shamed by the fact that they pursue profits, is something that hasnt just laid there dormant since the statement that you just read at Georgetown University that you just read. At Georgetown University just a couple of weeks ago, there was president obama showing contempt for people who had become financially successful. He was talking about Hedge Fund Managers, but he might as well by talking about anyone who is in the 1 or the 10 or the 20 . And he argued that somehow these people were, quote unquote societies societys lottery winners. In this passive aggressive way of his the degenerates their individual achievements. And i just feel very compelled to make sure that the parents and grandparents can get this book into the hands of their children and read the stories aloud. It really is a treasury of stories about unsung american inventors and tinkerers. I came up with this new middle word for it. Tinkerpreneurs, which is very distinct from it sort of the grant, great inventors that we all know. The Thomas Edisons of the world who get, i dont know, five minutes of attention at least in the Public Schools, but many of the people that i highlight get no attention at all. I have been marveling with a lot of fellow he asked i geeks that it is very rare that kids in school today learn about the George Westinghouses of the world. And you think about the fact that many of these businesses are still in Business Today which is what makes them even more remarkable. So, i think filling that vacuum and providing some sort of a vaccine against this this this disease of collectivism was very important. Host we are looking at a picture of him. Guest tony is the president ofm ag instruments. Of mag instruments. And i think the prototypical businessmen. Of course, i would imagine that a lot of your viewers are familiar with this product, the iconic maglight flashlight. Used not only by Law Enforcement and First Responders in this country and around the world but one of those Household Items that is essentially a necessity. He really did revolutionize the flashlight industry in the late 1970s. I got to go out to his headquarters as part of my research and boy, i still get tingles and chills up my legs thinking about the fact that this 84yearold man, every single day to this day, goes to his headquarters at 5 00 or 6 00 in the morning, he is the last employee to leave, he employs 800 people, an immigrant from off the coast of a tiny Little Island off of croatia. I tell his personal story and i tell about his ongoing battles against stupid government regulations. And stupid government taxes and the entire scheme, you know, that prevents him from innovating even further. But ultimately, i think, the takeaway from his story is is the sense of persistence and perseverance. He has made hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars. He could stop. You think about obama a couple years ago saying at a certain point you have made enough money. He actually said that. But he he misunderstands what drives so many of these American Business owners and makers. It is not merely about making money. Certainly, they want to make a profit, but they have this drive, this drive to continue to make things better. Host who built that, this is about the roeblings. San franciscos majestic Golden Gate Bridge celebrated its majestic 50th anniversary in 2012. The George Washington bridge marked its 80th bridge. 80th anniversary. And the covingtoncincinnati suspension bridge turned 148 and 2014. Who built that . Youre right you write. Guest i loved this. It is a soap opera and a historical thriller all rolled into one. The storing of the roebling family. David wrote a fabulous book about the brooklyn bridge, which of course the roebling family was responsible for, but i wrote this chapter what inspired it, what the catalyst was was another quote by Vice President joe biden. I quoted it in the introduction, where he claims that every, you know, major, great thing that has been done in america was a result of government. And, you know, it is almost like a major talking point of these progressive democrats to refer to infrastructure. That is why you had obama talking about roads and bridges. My alternate lesson was to talk about how it was private capitalists who provided all the Building Materials for the bridges that they are always claiming as government innovations. And John Roebling was the innovator behind wire rope. So there is the story of his coming here to america from germany. The harshness that he faced. And in particular, the reference that he had not only for american exceptionalism, but for making a profit. Yes, he was in unabashed an unabashed catholic, and i want children to know that you but it seems like some know that. But it seems like such a simple thing. And that is why pick the flashlight, the wire rope, host and the bottle cap. Host and root beer. Guest yes they are such mundane things that we take for granted. I think that in the 21st entry internet age, when kids are so enamored, they have their noses stuck in their devices and the only things they seem to revere our high tech things. We only talk about the rock stars of Silicon Valley. Well, these are the rock stars of the industrial age. And having an appreciation for these, you know, small conveniences that we dont give a Second Thought to, that was a real inspiration. Host Edwin Christian treats in i agree, success comes through a lot of sources. You may be very smart, but someone taught you. Innovation comes from multiple ideas. Guest it certainly does. And i pay Great Respect and give great credit to, you know, the ultimate shoulders that we all stand on when it comes to innovation. And that is the founding bothers. Certainly, of course, all of the tinkerpreneurs that i mentioned would give credit to other people. But i think that if you do not give ultimate credit to the original sources of the ideas, then it is it is it is an absolute defense to, you know, the idea that the Founding Fathers have, which is embedded in article one, section eight of the constitution, which is that the fruits of ones mind and the fruits of ones labor should be rewarded. That this idea that an individuals intellectual Property Rights should be protected, that there should be the fuel of interest for the fire of genius is a recognition that ultimately comes from one source, not from any. Yes, we can all grant that somebody has helped us along the way, but it wasnt government that is ultimately responsible progress and innovation. Host Michelle Malkin, before we go to calls a couple of policy issues. We just talked to doug hughes on the program. What you think of the fact that he landed right over here on the lawn and his message . Guest well, i think as a geek, the gyrocopter is pretty cool. [laughter] but stepping apart from that, i think we have had a lot of alarming security incidents right over there. And i still think there needs to be some ultimate scrutiny and accountability for many of the botched handling of these breaches. You know, certainly from a political , it is not political perspective, it is not a problem that is isolated under the obama administration. I wrote a lot about these kind of breaches under the Bush Administration as well. Host 2016, right now, who do you like . Guest i always hesitate to answer that question because what will happen is they will be some isolated soundbite of one positive thing i said about a candidate, and all of a sudden it turns into an endorsement. It is always a tricky thing particularly on the right side of the aisle where obviously, i come from because there are so many people particularly here in the washington bubble who are so vested and get so mad if you Say Something other remotely positive or remotely negative about the candidate. I am a team conservative, ok . I would like to have the most conservative candidate possible. I have been fairly outspoken about many of the candidates who i think absolutely fail that test. I am not a fan of jeb bush. I am not a fan of mike huckabee. I am not a fan of marco rubio. I am not a fan of a lot of these people who have either dipped their toes in the water or are brazenly out right there running already. Mostly because i have a lot of core signature issues. And to me, these are litmus tests of where people stand on important issues of Education Limited government, and National Security. If you are for the gang of eight, i dont like you. If you, at any point in your political career, have endorsed the abomination called common core, i dont like you. Then we get, of course, to the people who have made these convenient had these convenient changes right around the time they are about to announce the reform of a exploratory committee. And this to me is a litmus test of character. Really . You really expect me to buy your change of heart that is cynically timed to when you need to get donations from from grassroots conservative donors . You know, i have also said that i have liked a lot of what ted cruz stands for. I think that whether you agree or disagree with him, this is somewhat who is very passionate about his principles. I have followed his work for a long time. He, i think, most closely mirrors many of my views although i have to say on some core immigration issues, i am concerned not only with regard to, you know, the socalled path to citizenship for the 13 to 30 million illegal aliens who are here, but also in terms of work visas. In that regard, we have scott walker who has come along and said some things that have boiled up some people because he has finally acknowledged some of the abuses of the program. It has has paid explicit attention now to some of the issues that Jeff Sessions has talked about. I wish sessions would run for progress president. Host who built that is the name of the book. The republican line. You are first up. Caller yes michelle . Guest hi caller god bless you for what you do. You are the voice of reason for us conservatives. You support of American Values and you stand up for common sense. I wanted to praise you for that. Talking about the the gyrocopter thing. It is scary to know that the government has been, like, take for instance, the man went to a ahead of time of what he was going to do and they did nothing. The underwear bomber the underwear bombers father went to them ahead of time and told him that he was going to board a flight. What is going on . Guest those are great examples to cite. It is actually host no, no. Go ahead, michelle. Guest it is actually an extension of some of these Security Breaches and failures to share intelligence that i wrote about in my first book invasion. Not only is there a lot of stove piping and lack of communication between many of these interagency databases, but obviously, one hand doesnt know what the other hand is doing. If they cant capitalize on intelligence that they are actually handed on a silver platter, how can we do anything else . It is these are grave matters of National Security and it certainly doesnt help when you have many progressives and open border types in both the republican and democrat parties who are doing things to block basic kinds of information sharing. When we talk about these databases on, you know criminal and alien databases and sharing that is supposed to be going on between local, state, and federal authorities. Host Michelle Malkin, the effect of Marijuana Legalization idaho state of colorado. Guest it is still up in the air. I guess, literally. [laughter] i have lived in colorado now for eight years. We live in colorado springs. When we first arrived, of course, there were plenty of medical marijuana shops. It is i guess you could say there is almost one hundred recorder. Not just a starbucks. From a parental standpoint, that is definitely a concern. With the advent now of recreational shops, i can certainly see you know from the war on drugs standpoint, why many conservatives are concerned and always joking about it. But i i actually think it is a good thing we have these living laboratories. Of course, our referendum passed and then Washington State followed. In each case, it has been, you know, quite a bit of work for the state legislators to craft legislation to make it work. And i have been outspoken as a huge critic of the war on drugs. My eyes were first opened when i was first working as a columnist at the seattle times. I had firmly opposed a medical their Water Initiative there until i opposed a medical Marijuana Initiative there until i became exposed to medications. My mind was opened and i changed my mind. People always ask the, have you ever changed your mind on any issue . Yes, i have. And on this one. I would help heartfelt column last year. My motherinlaw was dying of melanoma and my husband and i took a chair to a pot shop in pueblo you can actually look it up on my blog and i talked about how i was rather impressed with the way these businesses were conducting themselves. The amount of security, the professionalism. And it seems to me when the Republican Party talks about wanting to do outreach to nontraditional constituencies, judy have mostly here you have mostly libertarian Business People who now i talk to the girl at the pot shop and she sounds like she could be a cardcarrying republican. I think there are a lot of republican to see opportunity here. Again, with the caveat that there hast to be consequences for breaking the rules and regulations and i think that colorado is a model for how other states will be doing this. I know there is a similar debate in d. C. About the issue. Host some strange rule that you can buy it or on it, but you cannot it is an odd rule. Kathy is in albuquerque. She is a democrat. Caller i know you are a lot smarter about some things, but you see so focused and divisive it is funny how we proceed the perceive things. I think obama says we acted do all this together. I dont think he was trying to disparage the wealthy and i dont disparage them either. I think sometimes people focused too much on the money and as you said, when you give credit to the people. It seems like you are focused on getting credit to a person that develops something. But what about the doctor, the one person that invented he didnt want a patent for the antibiotic he created. He was more concerned about the community. Host are you referring to john assault . The polio vaccine . Caller yes. I think we focus some its one that it takes all of us together. That is what i feel obama is saying. I dont see him disparaging the wealthy at all. Host lets get a response from Michelle Malkin. Guest i think the context is important because the context of his remarks back then in 2012 and the context of his remarks disparaging wealthy people with lottery winter winners just two weeks ago, it was his push to levy more punitive taxes on the wealthy. He said explicitly that families that belong to the Hedge Fund Managers had more than they needed. More than enough. The context of all these remarks is that wealthy people are selfish and that they need to get back more so that obama can redistribute the money and invest it in poor people. Because somehow people who pursue their own self interests are not benefiting anybody else. That is exactly the philosophy that im pushing against. It is interesting that you mentioned jonas salk and the polio vaccine. He would not have been able to pursue that in his benevolent way which you talk about if not for other private capitalist intervening to it. Ensure meeting to it. Contributing to it. The company that he and irving while builds and profited from and made lots of money on and put all their blood, sweat, and tears and equity into because their airconditioning business allowed the conditions in climate for jonas salk to preserve those vaccines and bring them to market. Yes, we perceive things differently. I think it is important in particular that children have more of a balance in their diet when they learned about how things come to market, how things become successful, and he was really benefiting the public interest. Yes, i know obama cares. Capitalist care about bringing products to market and that benefits everyone else in the world. Host james is in pennsylvania on the republican line. Go ahead. Caller this is for michelle. I am proud of your fundamentalist attitude towards our country. I grew up as a marine majors son and i was a flag waver back in the day. I go to the fourth of july parade and watch the marching band and i realize that growing up that our country is the greatest country in the world. I think the message should be spread and you are doing a hell of a job that. I would to thank you so much for your fundamentalism and american greatness because were the greatest country in the world and people that look down on us and speak badly about us or how we are doing wrong and how we cannot step up on around and do well for ourselves are, in my eyes idiotic. I am not a rich man. I am a lower middle class person. I am proud of my country and the opportunities that i have. I just want to say thank you for standing for those values. Host that was james in pennsylvania. Guest you could hear the emotion in his voice. I guess there are a lot of cynical people out there should just do not have the same kind of feeling. You certainly see that antiamericanism merit in hollywood and elite circles and academia. I agree with them. Him. Yes, it is stubbornly worth reminding people not to take for granted what we have here. Obviously my and perspective is i think that sharing your own personal stories is very important. The obama and the left are very good at telling stories. I think freemarket conservatives and procapitalists conservatives need to tell their stories more as well. That is why i told all of the stories in the book. Host you also talk about tom perkins in the book. Guest he is a very famous San Francisco area venture capitalists. I put him in the internet into the book because i was struck. I was moved an oped and that he wrote in the wall street journal. A letter to the editor where he was defending the 1 . Tom perkins is not some fox news firebreathing republican. He is a friend of al gore. He is on the opposite side of the aisle as i am, but he was sick and tired of the occupy wall street demagoguery against the rich. He compared what he it seen in San Francisco and oakland during the heyday of the occupy wall street protests. Remember they were hurling molotov cocktails at corporate buildings in oakland, setting things on fire. He compared it to kristallnacht. Of course, he riled all the circles. The punditry circles. All sorts of people were demanding apologies for the analogy he made. I thought it was absolutely apt. He was warning about the danger of demonizing a minority of wealthy creators Wealth Creators in our country. Fortunately he did not back deck back down from his main point. I think this was this idea that that somehow private venture capitalists are the enemy and need to be punished for their success. It was insidious to meet. To me. His letter really did say at all. Host and is in anaheim california. You are on with Michelle Malkin. Caller yes. I am very Ross Perotian in my politics. I believe in truth, fax, results. I made my judgments based upon the results mostly. Ive listen to you before years ago and when i go for my walks in the morning i thought about you said. The smallest unit of measurement is a micron. You need to have a micron of understanding of what youre talking about. The people that you admire, the rich, when you go down and see how they made their money, the y lie cheat, and steal. The mag light was a pirated military design from the 1950s for a waterproof, shark proof flashlight. From edison to bill gates, they did not do it edison did not create nothing. He pirated mostly neglect teslas ideas. Bill gates said he would give it to the colleges circuits could learn how to program computers. He ran straight to ibm and told them you have exquisite rights to dos. He got sued for that here. Host do you want to put a period on your statement . Caller i believe in the free market but a wellregulated freemarket. The purpose of government is to protect us from the excesses of the greed. Guest host we are going to leave it there and get a response from Michelle Malkin. Guest anthony maglika first patented the mag night in 1979. It is an amazing story of individual achievement. I do not know what he is talking about. I would say that certainly there are many big businesses and crony businesses that act in an unethical manner. I believe in protecting the intellectual property that Business People. That is why i support our what used to be our strong patent system. That has been turned on its head under the obama administration. There are efforts this past week to enrich big business cronies and lawyers at the expense of garage tinkerers and small inventors. There have also been cases, and i talk about some of them in the book where unethical Business People try to prevent the true creators of their work from pursuing their best interests. That certainly happened when George Westinghouse and nikola tesla teamed up against edison. Jpmorgan and j. P. Morgan. I dont actually see where we disagreed. In many cases i been very outspoken about this businesses that want to rely on government as a crutch. I have long been on opponent of an opponent of corporate welfare. I would recommend that he actually read the book. That always seems to be a problem with people when they jump to conclusions about what lessons i am trying to teach and what they should draw from it. Host wonderful tweets into you. I can take pride in two by business without denying the impact along the way of so many people in the benefit of roads and cetera. Host guest great. Maybe it bears repeating because i dont of people are understanding that the context of obamas public remarks about millionaires and billionaires is really important. Because of the hypocrisy. Here is somebody who for political gain will demagogue the wealthy and turn around and get on a private jet and raise money for them in manhattan or hollywood. Host dee dee, do you think oligopolies stifle Small Business creation . Guest absolutely. The chapter on westinghouse and tesla is particularly interesting because here was George Westinghouse who was trying to conduct his many incredible businesses in an ethical way. I am a champion of ethical capitalism where people do not rely on government rigging the game for them in any way. That does not just mean opposing the kind of greedenergy hands out that obama was responsible for. Just a possibly satisfy the lefty viewer get out there viewers out there, ive been critical of the gop backed crony capitalism are crony socialism if you want to call it that. Venturesocialism when it comes to handing out government subsidies for stadiums and such that obviously benefit big businesses. I also do not like the h1b program because it benefits the big tech corporations and big Silicon Valley interests at the expense of american workers. I think if you actually listen to i am saying and read what im writing, you will find you agree with you more than you disagree. Host nsa bulk collection and the freedom act, the patriot act . Your view . Guest once again, we come to one of those interesting issues were on the right there is a lot of disagreement. I was a supporter of the patriot act under the bush and ministries and. Administration. And because of the work i had done on world war ii and the need for the kind of intelligencwe gathering that took place during world war ii to fight that war. I have been much more supportive of the nsa than a lot of might libertarian friends. And to the extent that the courts of rules that they overstepped their bounds, i agree with that. I think the idea of abolishing the nsa is very foolish and you hear that from some of the extreme circles of the libertarian wing of our party. Host grace in memphis, democrat, things for holding. Guest thank you very much caller michelle really needs to get her facts straight because the fact of the matter is that Elizabeth Warren saved, not the president , because as noted on fox news, she is divisive and she does not like this president. There are many things he has done that i dont like. In the meantime ever think of as happened in our eyes and apparently she is negative. Positive people put forward. I dont like her. Thank you for letting me have my say. I really dont like her. That smile on your face is an ignorant smile. You are ignorant. Host that was grace in memphis. Guest i hope she has some cookies and milk and feels better. Host im kind of going to the tweets here and there are several i cannot read or will read [laughter] host do you ever get tired of the backandforth . Guest no, i dont. I love it. I have been in this business for a quarter century in with the advent of social media and immediate responses you can get now on twitter, it is a flood where it used to be a trickle. You had to wait for the actual mail to come in. It is funny. She says im so negative because everyday i wake up in the morning and i cannot believe that i can do what i do. Only in america can i make a living and put food on the Table Running my mouth off. That is an amazing thing. I marvel at that. I have a fierce appreciation for the First Amendment in this country, particularly as a woman of color. I have been in other parts of the world where i have been reminded of what my place in station would of been but for the fact that my parents decided to risk it all and come here. This was a place that embrace people that had our work ethic. In embraced the principles of the american dream. So, you know, the hate tweets and hate mail they counsel the territory. It is interesting because over the last several months now you see these pieces appear about the poison that spread on the internet and what should we do about it. In particular there have been a lot of leftleaning women live sort of blown the whistle on the sexism, racism, misogyny that is out there. A lot of us that have been outspoken conservative women who have absorbed so much of this with nearly a concern from the New York Times Editorial Board are wondering hello . My answer to negative speeches always been more and better speech. That is why i have not stopped doing what i do. Host lee from sterling virginia. Republican line. Caller good morning, michelle. I am a republican but at the same time i think i know what you are saying. I kind of wish that because it is coming from perhaps an aggressive way and hear me out when i say this. For me personally i do appreciate innovation and hard work. That is how i been able to be successful and a lot of my friends have. I grew up in brooklyn, new york. Very poor. My mom immigrated from russia. I got to learn what it means to work hard to get what you need and the opportunities this great country can provide. If it wasnt for the navy to accept me, to go to boot camp and to learn the craft and then get the g. I. Bill. I was iraq and afghanistan and they got the g. I. Bill to get my degrees and i when a man to get a masters, etc. I do not want to say was a handout. I worked hard for it. It was a little boost, a little nitrous that the government provided me for my effort to say hey, now go ahead and get your degrees. Its her education. Frankly, that is the reason i am successful today. I think i do agree that hard work supports innovation and when obama was saying that, i do not think he was knocking that per se. I think he was saying the government can play a role to provide a little nitrous to folks that have that want to innovate and work hard. I think that is a point that is lost in translation with what you are saying. I think that is something you are saying, but it seems like youre coming from a very aggressive perspective. Host lets leave it there leave. Michelle . Guest i think it was because i was listening to the town. Tone. A lot of people respond very aggressively on obamas a half the half. Behalf. He talks about people that help that along the way, Public School teachers. If you look at the plain words on the page, sure, i agree with that. Obviously help other people help along the way and there are stories in the book right talked about people who helped along the way for each and every one of the innovators i celebrate. But remember, go back and listen to that. You played the clip at the very beginning there. You think you are so smart. You did not work as hard. You did not build that. I bristle at that. I think there is an underlying demagoguery that has festered, particularly in ivory tower circles about a very basic debate between individualism and collectivism. And that is what im responding to. Host you earlier referred to your onair person as a persona. People that made you in the green room or no you outside of the studio often say nice things about you. You are a nice person. Is there somebody different that comes on the air . Guest when i say persona, i dont mean to say that it is some kind of stick. Schtick. If you put beyond tv and have some sort of leftwing person on the other side saying something i actually disagree with and we only have three minute to get a point across, yes, im manager going to grab every last breath of fresh air to say what i need to say. Particularly when it is some issue i am passionate about whether it is common core amnesty or amnesty or whatever is put in front of me at the department of justice. All the things that of it happening in places like baltimore in ferguson. I have built up a well of either outrage or passion about it. Yes, you can turn me on and i will just go. But outside of the cable tv box in the bubble, it helps to remind people that first of all it is always funny because when i do speeches people are like oh, you actually have a bottom half. You have legs. If youre doing this on a weekly basis, and that is what people see, i get it fixed in their mind that there was that that is all there is cheap. Its good to get out of the box and remind people were a real person which is why social media has been such a part of my life. I have been known as a wretch for most of my career as a newspaper columnist and a writer. But on social media people get a fuller sense of for you are. You get to show your full self here your sense of humor your what interest you beyond politics. I played dungeons dragons in high school. We are big gamers now with our kids. I love sonic cherry linemates. Limeaaids. Host walter in eureka, california. Please go ahead. Caller thank you cspan for present in such an intelligent young person. It is a pleasure to see. Michelle, could you tell us a little bit about your educational background and what road did you take to get your books published . I will take my answer off the air. Guest sure. I grew up in southern new jersey. I want to Public School through eighthgrade. I would you holy spirit high school. I was a proud spartan graduate in 1988. I went to our Berlin College which is been in the news of late for many per rocksisms a political corrections correctness. I mentioned on fox news that i was a classmate of Stephanie Rawlings blake, the mayor of baltimore who invoked an infamous phrase of a concept that oberlin perfected having safe spaces where students should be protected from ideas from which they disagree. Oberlin was also in the news recently when Christina Hoss summers, a hero of mine, and outspoken conservative scholar and critic of much of the excesses of feminism came to campus. And once again all the lefties in the faculty protected the students from the awful, awful conservative speech by invoking not only safe spaces, but trigger warnings. Because now you need to put a sign up that it is a trigger warning whenever you hear ideas that are anathema to your being. In terms of books i wrote, my first book was invasion. Ive host a few years ago she did indepth with us. You can type in her name at www. Cspan. Org and be able to learn more about her. Why would somebody who leans the way you do politically choose oberlin . With its reputation . Guest im a lapsed classical pianist and its a great mother had higher ambitions for my musical crew than i did. I did study music theory and did not do very well. The conservatory is very well known. Fortunately, Political Correctness has not corroded the conservatory. After i gave of those ambitions i just decided to stay on at the liberal arts college and study government. Host rockville maryland, rockville, maryland. Democrat. Caller i would like to say two things. First of all, i dont believe for one minute that people like ted cruz for the conservative right wing of the Republican Party really care about funding education, the debt ceiling fixing medicare. I dont believe that. I believe that thereir point is to sabotage and continue to impede instruct abstract and destroy the president s legacy and i do have a question. The question is why would anyone vote for a republican to run the government when they are so obviously antigovernment . Guest there is a lot to unwrap their. First, again, this idea that republicans dont care. Maybe it is a function of the republican marketers failure to really impress upon people what needs to be done to allow people to lift themselves up. To get themselves out of poverty. We spent 22 trillion on the war on poverty and yet baltimore interrupts in the same way it did in the 1960s and 1970s. I started my journalism career in los angeles at the height of all of the rodney king. How much money how we poured into the inner cities that has been, by the way world by democrats for decades and decades, and somehow with the Republican Partys called that these places are still in ruins. The message of limited government conservatism is that money should be spent efficiently and wisely not that it should not be spent at all. I just want to say one thing that i think illustrates the fact that there are conservatives who can reach across the aisle and agree with people on the other side about how to best how to best benefit, for example, our children. And that issue is common because i find myself on the same side of many local Teacher Union leaders progressives who are very, very upset on how common core has come into a boondoggle to get billions of dollars of public money to big businesses like all of these tech companies, the pearsons of the world. I am on the same side. I was talking about it before a lot of people on the left who are criticizing it. The question isnt whether we care less are more but how we achieve our goals. Host final treat final tweet, she hates Big Government and regulation but trust the nsa not to overstep and spy on u. S. Citizens. Uhhuh. Guest i can see why after many, many years of distressed, particularly of National Security agencies and our Border Security agencies, why she would feel that way. I acknowledge that. On the other hand i think a sense of history and perspective about how we have waged war in the past and now we have in and how we have been successful and these functions are vital that that is the problem i think that washington creates with their sense of incompetence in other areas. You had that caller earlier in the show who talked about the underwear bomber case. To me that is a compelling reason to put somebody in office who can act like an adult with a sense of seriousness about protecting our sovereignty. Host Michelle Malkin has been our guest. Here is our most recent book, who built that . It is called and one subject we did not get to, glassmaking. Thank you as always. Guest thank you, peter. Host half hour to go. Friday before memorial day weekend and we talked about a lot of topics. Just something we wanted to point out to you. Priscilla and west hills california, republican line. What is on your mind this morning, priscilla . Caller what was on my mind and i missed michelle by a split second after she left, but i just wanted to say how proud i am of her. She speaks her mind, she is not negative like a lot of people say she is but she is a brilliant woman and i just think that she should run for president. Host i meant to ask her that and i wish i had. I wish we would have gone that in there because i would love to know if she is ever interested in elected office. I think that wouldve been a great question. Is west hill in Southern California by the way . Caller yeah, it is in san fernando valley. Host she will be at the reagan library. Caller oh, my goodness host in the next month or so and you might want to check the calendar. She will be there in case you want to see her up there. Bonnie is next right here in washington, d. C. A democrat. Caller yes, my name is can you hear me . Host go ahead and talk. Caller regards to Michelle Malkin, she has done great work in publishing books but i think she is very cynical about our president barack obama. I dont think that should have been she should not have make in that phase. She was making faces when talking about our president. Secondly, our president is perhaps going to wear i would like to see journalists bringing out more of what it is all about , not only about terrorism and should bob that but kenya has to offer and how can you and how can you and how kenya works with United States. Michelle obama has done great work and her husband, they have been good to the environment in nairobi and i think it is nice that perhaps barack obama should run for general of the United Nations or be inactive player when he leaves office. Host bonnie, are you originally from kenya . Caller i am originally from kenya and im here with my four children. All of them are going to college and into environment. Environment science and i have covered lots of those units. Host thank you, bonnie. Carroll is in a late on our republican line. Carol, you are on the air. Caller hi, good morning. I am so sorry i missed michelle. I wanted to tell her how much i appreciate her i listen to her all the time and im miss her from fox news. Anyway i listen to someone who called in this morning. I would say the hate speech or hate whatever it is that michelle and it is so undeserving. I just wanted to tell michelle that she is loved. I myself am a strong conservative and i believe and michelle supports some of the things and talked about some of the things obama was doing in regards host carol, you turned up the volume on your tv and you can do that and we get a delay and we have got to move on. This is from the National Journal this morning. Fcc prepares to become the internets privacy cop. They are warning internet providers to get in line as he prepared to enforce new privacy regulations. The Agency Issued an enforcement advisory wednesday outlining for the first time how it plans to decide whether to crack down on the company for violating its customers privacy. The statement offers few specifics, leaving critics to warn that the agency is claiming expensive new regulatory powers. Internet providers, the fcc says should take reasonable and good faith steps to protect customer information. That means is that internet providers should comply with their own privacy policies and the core tenants of basic privacy protections. That is from the National Journal. Walter is from new york city and a democrat. Caller hello. I am a first time caller. What i wanted to say to Michelle Malkin and others and supporters of her, one of the things in theology of christian theology is that people who have money and are very successful and have often thought of themselves as being blessed by god. That is that is not an idea that i think is true. I think they are lucky or maybe they worked hard and maybe they made it all themselves without any help. But i dont think god is necessarily favoring people who have more money. Host walter, what do you do or what did you do in new york city . Caller i worked in michigan no, im sorry. I worked mostly on long island as a guidance counselor and teacher. Host and what do you do now . Are you retired . Caller i am retired. Host may we ask how old you are . Caller 80 years old. Host do you watch washington journal every morning . Caller a lot, yet, most mornings. Host and still at 88, what do you read on a daily basis to keep up with Public Affairs . Caller umm, the New York Times mostly and a lot of books that go along with the ideas or names of the men who team who are on cspan. Host all right. Caller uhh, i cant even think of the names of them now. Joseph carol oates is one ive got. Host her newest novel . Caller yeah. Host yeah, ok, all right. Walter, thank you for calling in and sharing a little bit about your own soap with us. We appreciate that. Either way, for that caller that called in right after Michelle Malkin left, our person who works in the green room and helps out with a guests out there, her name is also michelle and we got the word to her and michelle from cspan asked Michelle Malkin if she would ever run for president and answer was an emphatic, no way. Maybe a relief to some and maybe disappointment to others. Richard in missouri, democrat. Richard, hi. Caller hi, i am just talking about the government. I hope the government is able to help us clean up that oil mess out there in california. It looks like a real tragedy again. There are bad people, i guess host you called Michelle Malkin a progressive . Caller [indiscernible] at least they did that for her dont lock them down too hard. Nobody is perfect, that is for sure. These conservatives in the senate want to send more troops to iraq. We have learned our lesson in vietnam, why do we get the hell out of there. Im sorry to say that but thats the way i feel. Host the senate has come into session. A reminder if you have been watching the show on three hours, you saw stock with alex rogers the National Journal a little bit earlier and we talked about legislative strategies the senate is using to deal with the nsa patriot act bill along with the trade bill, along with the highway funding bill, the export and import and how they roll together www. Cspan. Org. You can go to you can go to www. Cspan. Org, type and alex rogers and you can get the whole package of what they will be doing today and potentially over the weekend. And that will all be live on cspan2 whenever the senate is in. Next up is leanne in michigan. Leeann, what is on your mind this morning . Caller does everybody accuse the Republican Party or conservatives in general to be opposed to education . We are far more for education then the democratic side. We are part we are for superior education. There is a movement in this country to outlaw all private education and believe it or not i mean france it is illegal to have private education but it is not just private education. What really matters to us is what is taught and how it is taught in it seems like in a Public School, and i went to Public School, that we always get taught about the wonders of all the liberalism and downfalls of all the conservatism. You know what . Some of us conservative parents present that. We care about what is taught how it is taught, we care about theories, we care about math, we care about all the things you care about it but we care about it in a different way and we had different ideas. The only ideas are being taught are the left lane to our children and that is what we care about. Host leeann, do you have children in school now . Caller i have i am a grandmother and 13 grandkids and they are in school now and i see all sorts of crazy things being taught. It used to be you could sing Christmas Carols and out they cant sing christmas it is just ridiculous. I dont care if they think jewish songs i dont care facing all sorts of songs from around the world. I love music and he does not have to be all one kind. You know what im saying . Its just like, everything that is good and decent and honorable is trying i care about i want the left side being taught, idea, but i also want conservative thought taught. I went independent thought taught. I went all different kinds of thought taught to my children. So they can make their own decisions. Host rhiannon grand ledge michigan. This is kenneth in florida on the independent line. Caller hello. Host hi, kenneth. Caller how are you doing . I missed Michelle Malkin. I wanted to ask her a question but since she left, i just maybe want to pose it to you. In the aftermath of the slaughter of the family in washington d. C. The other day, will there be any outcry or white demonstration in ferguson or the baltimore case . Or will the President Administration suppressed the issue as if it wasnt a race matter . Host do you think it was a race matter question mark caller race matter . Caller i dont know. Im just posing a question to get an opinion. Host this is charles and charlotte, north carolina, republican line. Caller good morning. Every morning you can count on certain people from certain states to call in and defend the president. It is the president s right, shell has done a great job, i called the lower information voters. What really drives this country and this economy is the Free Enterprise system and its the people who wake up every morning, go to work. Its the people who clean Office Buildings at night to make extra money so the kids can go to college. Its the people those are the people that really pay the tax and i am sick and tired of talking about progressives. If people do not get up in the morning and go to work to earn money, didnt pay the tax, there would be no money for progressives to squander in washington. I think the president has done a great job in his x number of years of driving a wedge between a lot of different people, races, he is trying to drop a wedge in ferguson and demagoguery about Police Officers and drive a wedge from white and black. Also between people that stay home every day and people that get up every day and go to work. I think he has missed the boat on being honest with people who have no education that basically have children and they basically put those children, those are the kids he needs to stand up and say, look, take responsibility is the and all and be all in this country. If you cant earn learn a skill that makes important and viable to someone else, you are going to have a rough life. Host what do you do in charlotte . Caller i own my own company. Host what kind of company . Caller i get up every day, i would rather not say but i get up every day and work. I pay an awful lot of money in tax. I came from nothing and there is other place on the face of the planet where you can start out being nothing and be something other than america. And memorial day God Bless America and god bless cspan for letting us talk. Thank you. Host charles in charlotte, north carolina. This is the Washington Post. Jeb bush, seeking more distance from his brother, offers some rare criticism. This is from new hampshire, i think that during my brothers time, republicans spent too much money, jumpers, said. I think he couldve used the veto power john, you are on the washington journal. Caller good morning, peter. How are you . Host im doing well, how are you . Caller im doing well. Earlier in the program when you are discussing Bernie Sanders run for president , someone had made the comment that she was one of those people who propagate the conspiracy theories like the United States or israel was responsible for she referred to Bernie Sanders having dual citizenship with israel and you kind of let that go except for a comment that we would put our people researching that and it never came back. Was probably no time left today but please leave a note for somebody to come back for that on a future washington journal and fix that. Host did you go online, john . Caller no. Host did you find something relevant . Caller yes, i went online and i found an article on and not to website called storm front and lots of other sites quoting that information, so there is actually a Facebook Page which talks about congressman with dual citizenship and what it does is it listed random jewish people claiming host if you noticed, we read the twitter, and from another viewer saying i think that refers to the fact that a lot of Jewish Americans can get dual citizenship. And i think we did not just leave it hanging out there, i dont want you to think that. Its important for viewers to know. Caller its important for viewers to know that it is similar to germany or england, i cant remember, but if both their parents come from there you are entitled to citizenship. I am jewish and i know probably thousands of jewish people and i dont know a single one of them with an israeli citizen ship. Im sure there are. This woman and the like are clearly believed that kind of thing. I think its important to fix that. Host john, thank you for calling in and making that comment. James is in natchez mississippi, independent. James, you are on the washington the washington journal. Caller i said i was an independent democrat, i kind of lean toward Bernie Sanders. I would like to make a comment about ms. Malkin. I had not really heard of for until i saw her just a few minutes ago. In her demeanor, she seems to be filled with a lot of hate herself. She seems to be like a mirror image of an coulter ann coulter. I believe in free speech. The type of speech that these type of people are doing is not free speech. They are making millions and millions of dollars over, what i call hatetype things. Hate speech. It is also on television. I just leave you know, we know that a fishmonger makes money off of fish and a warmonger makes money off of four and a hatemonger, which i think these people are, they are spreading hate, making millions of dollars off of spreading hate. The conspiracy theories and i used to be a republican until i saw theat these hatemongers have adopted them. The republicans have adopted christian thing. If you look at the main thing about christianity, it is to love, not to hate. It is not to be suspicious. It is not to do things just for the sake of making money, money, money. And that is my comment. Host all right james in natchez, mississippi. Just want to point out in case you are interested, the lead editorial in the Washington Post this morning is critical of the obama administrations approach to russia. The lead editorial in the New York Times entitled, the escalation of unauthorized wars. It is critical of the u. S. Congress and its approach to declaring war. Paul is in lafayette, louisiana. Republican. Caller thank you for cspan. You had a caller who asked Michelle Malkin something to the affect of how can republicans ask for your vote when they want no government . Let me add to michelles response. Conservatives want much more limited government. We want a smarter government. One with less wasteful spending. My question to that caller is how can you continue to support president obama with trillions that he and the democrats have wasted . We are broke and we have no money. Host paul, what who do like in 2016 right now . Caller undecided. I am very conservative fiscally and we need to do something to cut the size of government. Host dwight is in kentucky. Dwight is also a republican and light is on the air. And dwight is on the air. Caller yes sir. I retired military and work for a defense contractor and i worked on uav on predator and drones. The American Public has no concept of the technology that is out there now and what is coming down the pipes. They got a little taste of it with that uav got sent to the white house property. We were working on stuff like that 10 years ago. The American Public has no idea what the surveillance and never that is going on. Also in germany and i was i did surveillance in German Military operations and that was 20 years ago. The technology, people are not talking about that. They have no idea they have no concept and the press has no concept of what is coming down the pipes. Host dwight, do you think Edward Snowden did a good thing by exposing a lot of this or a bad thing . Caller bad thing. There are some things that the American Public just dont need to know. I mean that sincerely. They did not need to know about the Manhattan Project and that was a weapon of war and they dont even know about some of the other stuff. The American Public deserves to know how their money is being spent and that is a job of the committees in congress. It starts there. Host that is dwight in kentucky. That will wrap up todays washington journal. I went to remind you is memorial day weekend, i dont need to remind you of that, but on big threeday weekends like this, on cspan2 every weekend is but to the. This is a day when you get three days of book tv. Authors for three full days, go to book tv. Org to see the schedule on the righthand side. You can click on that and look at some of the folks who will be on. It is also a three day weekend on cspan3 which is American History tv every weekend
