spiral in the pacific, a decent amount of moisture. the other thing we're noting which is unusual at least for bay area standards is because this is pulling in so much moisture from the south, a little bit of humidity, look at the cloud tops. those are very high once again indicating the instability. we could get a few lightning strikes on the lightning detection network as this rain starts to build. right now we do have showers offshore but as that rapidly approaches what you're going to notice is it starts to dissipate because we have a lot of dry air across the bay area. so eventually tonight we may get a stray shower at the coastline, but we're going to hold off as you'll see here in the highlights real quickly on some of the most rain for sunday. that's the worst weather day for jeff. he could be a giant for life. the giants locked up franchise star buster posey with a massive contra contract. the national league mvp signed an eight-year extension for a cool $157 million. nbc bay area's jean elle is live where he just answered questions about the largest contract in giants' history. >> reporter: well, the giants and buster posey are now locked into a very expensive long-term relationship. and everyone appears to be very happy about it. posey and the giants were all smiles making the announcement just a few minutes ago. it's an eight-year contract extension for posey worth $167 million. that means posey will be a giant until 2021. there is a no trade clause. now clearly the giants believe in posey. he is, after all, the 2012 national league most valuable player and the batting champion who was a key player in the world series victory just to name a few of the catcher's accomplishments. he thanked the giants, wife and family for all their support. he also thanked the teammates for creating a winning environment. posey is the $167 million man. >> and, again, just to reiterate what is so exciting about this to me, this is a very family environment. you very much. another 20-something making big money news. mark zuckerberg could be facing a huge tax bill. the ipo will likely cost zuckerberg $1 billion in taxes. zuckerberg sold more than 30 million shares of facebook to come up with the money. he made more than $3 billion off the sale, most of it taxable. impossible to say exactly what he will be paying. experts say his final tax bill will be more than a billion dollars. the jobless rate fell for both the bay area and california last month boosted by a rapid hiring in the tech industry. the labor department says 41,000 jobs were created in california during february. the biggest single category was technology. they each saw nearly 9,000 new high-tech jobs added last month. california's jobless rate now stands at 9.6%. new at 6:00, morgan hill police say they busted a huge marijuana fwroe operation hidden in an office park. 32-year-old daniel siegel was charged with marijuana cultivation. they say he was using more than 6,000 square feet of rental space on caputo drive to grow pot. the operation was sophisticated with elaborate filters and irrigation. a 1-year-old boy is recovering tonight after being shot in his own home in richmond. his family is thankful saying it could have been much worse. nbc bay area's jodi hernandez is live in richmond at police headquarters with the latest on the investigation. jodi? >> reporter: we caught up with baby elijah's grandparents here at the richmond police department late this afternoon. they shared the ordeal their family has been dealing with. the baby is out of the hospital. we are told he is laughing and playing, but his family is still very shaken by what's happened. >> he is a wonderful child and blessed to be in our family and we're blessed to have him. we can't wait for him to get we well. >> reporter: ali and his wife couldn't be more grateful their 1-year-old grandson is out of the hospital and doing well. little elijah was shot in the neck by a stray bullet yesterday afternoon as his grandma fed him bananas inside their richmond apartment. >> first i hear two shots on the street. then i heard my window and i felt something flying. >> it took us several minutes when we saw the blood in the hands and we realized that he had been shot. >> reporter: they say they saw the bullet longed in the boy's neck but fortunate ly it didn't penetrate his throat. doctors removed the bullet fragment and released him this afternoon. tonight the family is thankful to have him home and hopeful the shooter will be caught. >> somebody knows who this person is. i just hope they get him some help. i hope he realizes the value of life for him and everyone around him. >> reporter: the boy who likes to dance gangnam style and play with his thomas train is a gift and they're so happy he survived. >> that baby is more precious to mae. that is the grand son i've been waiting all these years to have. >> reporter: richmond police are doing all they can to find the shooter. they're following several leads but so far no arrests. meanwhile, the family says they're just too traumatized to return to the aaron triangle neighborhood. they're staying with family in nearby east bay city. contra costa county supervisor says that his office is trying to secure some county housing funds to help the family relocate. report i reporting live in richmond, i'm jodi hernandez, nbc bay area news. jodi, thank you. police are crediting a vigilant parent with helping to arrest a 19-year-old man they say was caught photographing children at a gymnastics school. investigators say a parent noticed the man hanging around the san mateo facility. the parent called authorities after seeing the man taking cell phone pictures of the children. police confirmed they found images of kids on the man's phone, even more at his home. teachers at the jim ngymnastics school are grateful that parent was observant. >> i think parents are relieved someone who could be a problem to their children is off the streets and cannot be around our facility any longer. >> reporter: police are investigating whether the man had contact with any of the children. stepping into a bone marrow transplant. so far hasn't found a match. the bone marrow registry going on in san jose may help him find one. marianne favro live at the registry in san jose and, marianne, i understand there has been overwhelming community support for this. >> reporter: well, it's been tremendous. this afternoon more than 350 people have come out here to re register to be a bone marrow donor and it has just been absolutely amazing and still people, hundreds of them, are pouring in tonight. this registry lasts until 7:00 this evening. many of these folks you see here are hoping they will be the one to save the life of a first grader here at river glenn school. hundreds came out to join the bone marrow registry in san jose. many are here because they want to help first grader eduardo who was diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukemia. he desperately needs a bone marrow transplant. >> yes, there is no other way to cure him. >> reporter: for the 6-year-old who loves angry birds, finding a match is more difficult because he's a minority. >> 9 million people, 11 million people are registered. 70% are caucasian and only 30% make up the rest of the registry. >> reporter: registering is simple. fill out a form and get a cheek sw swab. doctors say if you are a match donating bone marrow is much more simple than it used to be. >> you get at most a one-day procedure. you check in the morning. the doctor sedates you and extracts bone marrow from your pelvis. you wake up, you go home. you can resume normal activities and within three weeks you are complete completely recovered. >> reporter: the doctor's own son, luke, was diagnosed with leukemia at 18 months. a bone marrow donor in seattle saved his son's life. >> without the donor, my son would be ted. >> reporter: which is why he hopes more people will come here to this registry to embrace the chance to save a life and hopefully give eduardo a chance to return here to his school and friends. there is also a new california law which requires your employer to give you seven days of paid leave if you do end up being a bone marrow donor and you go through the procedure. here this registry will last again until long home improvement project. mark cliberg began remodeling his home in 2002. his neighbors began to complain after the yard was filled with junk and construction materials. the city sued him and red tagged his home. he started living in a tent to protect his things. the city now has given him until monday morning to clean up the mess or face a $25,000 fine. >> when you're doing it with money out of pocket and i haven't worked in over a year now, so it makes it tough. my wife lost her job. the place she worked at for 25 years ended up going out of business. >> the city says they tried to work with him but ran out of patience. he is a contractor. says he's complied with most of the demands in the court order and thinks the city should leave him alone. the problem of distracted driving has gotten so bad and so deadly that california highway patrol is calling april distracted driving month. now a piece of tech swri is trying to curb this danger. our business and tech reporter scott and a plea for the public's help. the injured animal found in the south bay and why wildlife officials say it was no accident. a judge is asking it for more information before deciding whether a sexual abuse lawsuit against an east bay school district wi district can go forward. a swim coach at cal says in the 1990s she was sexually abused by two teachers. a whistleblower has since come forward saying she was a teacher back then, tried to alert the district after students came forward with similar accusations but the district did not respond. the attorney says the district was concealing information. >> as the case progresses another damning story, more damning evidence that this was an intentional cover-up. the district knew a pedophile was in their midst and yet they deliberately concealed it and did nothing to protect the students. >> an attorney for the district argued there may be an issue with the statute of limitations saying there are other remedies but they aren't in this lawsuit. a woman who confessed to lying about being raped put an ad on craigslist to find someone to beat her up. that's what prosecutors revealed as 20-year-old morgan triplett appeared in court. they say she posted two ads on craigslist the day before the alleged rape hoax. one ad offered sex to anyone who would shoot her in the shoulder. when no one responded she posted a second ad asking someone to punch, kick, and bruise her and she promised she would not file charges. investigators say one person did respond to the ad, beat her up, and then she called 911 to report the rape. mental health problems played a role in the attack. >> as far as the investigation is concerned, posting these ads was thoughts of suicide, depression, wanting somebody to hurt her so that -- almost to bring her back to life. >> the judge said she can only go online to complete schoolwork and must attend counseling. a wildlife rescue center is looking for the person or persons responsible for committing an act of animal cruelty on a seagull. some of these photos might be hard to look at but we'll have a happy ending. images of the gull found yesterday, its legs covered in foam caulking and then wrapped in packing tape. rescuers say the bird was emaciated and dehydrated but they expect it to make a full recovery and to be released back into the wild. whoever harmed the tonight's reality check. north korea has been talking tough for years. but is the country's latest provocation bound to lead to violence? we evaluate the risk next. on the brink of war or just testing our patience, north korea is reportedly ramping up its military activity to get ready for confrontation. >> leaders around the globe from russia to china are urging restraint and warning of a vicious cycle that could get out of control. tonight's reality check, sam brock looks at claims the latest threat will lead to war. sam? >> the request question is will north korea directly attack the u.s., the u.s. target or one of its allies? no one can answer that question definitively. if you frame the question does this round of confrontation pose the greatest risk as of yet, the answer is fiery videos. even the threat of cyber attacks which a quick web search would show are more talked about now than ever. >> can they do cyber attacks? can they interfere with the south korean banking system? that's a real threat as oppose ed to the rhetoric. if you look at the overall pattern putting together what they're doing in the nuclear program with the rhetoric and the threats right now, yes, it's very serious. >> reporter: while experts like duffy predict north korea's ability to launch a global nuclear missile is still two to three years away the country has evidence ofri risky behavior in the past especially to south korea which could easily escalate to war. >> the risk taking is what's re really threatening. when you do those activities, those provocations, you can never be sure what the response is going to be and this is how wars start. what we're seeing in the past couple of weeks and in the days and weeks ahead is a really dicey situation. >> reporter: now recent reports indicate that kim jong un is preparing his military and steadying his rockets. whether that leads to direct confrontation, experts will tell you, is anybody's guess. what's not speculative is ever posed to our safety. i'm sam brock and that is today's reality check. new tonight at 6:00, nasa says a pair of bay area residents bilked nasa and the national science foundation out of more than a million dollars in phony grants. ali kashani and yang zhao have been charged with wire fraud, conspiracy and money laundering. the pair received newmumerous grants totaling $1.2 million. they face 10 to 20 years in prison, res it at this tugs and a quarter million dollar fine. a member of the navy elite's s.e.a.l. team six has been killed and another injured. the accident happened yesterday during routine training in arizona northwest of tucson. the spokesman says the unidentified s.e.a.l.s were practicing free falls when they collided midair. they receive extensive parachute training. oakland police are redeveloping photos of a bank robbery hoping the public can help identify the suspect. just before noon on tuesday this man approached a teller at a bank on harrison street and follow-up. controversial singer michelle shock turned her show into a protest performance in santa cruz last night. she staged a sit-in wearing a mask across her mouth with the message silenced by fear. the santa cruz club mo's ally canceled after a performance in san fr san francisco earlier this month. the jazz club turned off her mike after the crowd became angry with her anti-gay statement. she wouldn't answer questions last night instead inviting bystanders to sign her white jump shoot. earlier on twitter she called it an art project. >> you may not recognize him by name but chances are you know vic stevenson's song called "you're still a young man." >> stevens was once the front man for tower until drugs got the best of him. he spent the last 36 years in prison for murder. he's now free and making a comeback. nbc bay area sat down with him recently and brings us his story. ♪ >> reporter: after being gone almost four decades, singer rick stevens is back once again but not before living half his life locked up. >> it changed me physically. it changed me spiritually. it changed me mentally and emotionally. i had to go to prison to grow up. let's go back in time. >> there we have rick and the ravens. >> reporter: the baby faced stevens dabbled in several groups before becoming the front man of tower power in 1969. it wasn't long after that the group from oakland caught period of time or at a young age. res researchers reviewed data involving 256 kids with autism and 752 without. they compare the two groups and concluded that neither the number of vaccines a child gets before age 2 nor the number of vaccines a child gets in a single day were associated with developing autism. there's a new treatment option for the 24 million americans who have type 2 diabetes. coastline. mainly cloudy here as we head throughout 11:00 p.m. tonight. your forecast for tomorrow morning shows plenty of cloud cover. and then as we head throughout 11:00 a.m., a chance of showers at the coast and also by the bay. let's get you outside to our live hd sky camera network and you can see in san jose cloud cover on the increase. marine layer is building back up as the storm is pushing in more of an onshore flow and we'll take you off to the north at the golden gate brimming and, yes, it is fogged in. even a little bit of drizzle getting squeezed out. you drive 20, 30 miles and you'll find dramatically different weather for tonight. here is this area of low pressure situated offshore that will pull in some of the moisture which, again, is going to make it feel slightly humid for saturday and sunday and also may bring us a possibility of thunderstorms. there are a few caveatcaveats. just a slight shift and it's more to the north. we could see more rain to the south. overall a tenth of an inch to a half inch and we're looking at the best chance of some of the heavier pockets of rain as we head into easter sunday. here is the time line. tomorrow, well, not a real big deal. cloudy across most of the bay area. as we head throughout the evening hours, a chance of scattered showers. we'll hold off on some of the heaviest rainfall until easter morning. at 7:00 a.m. scattered areas of rainfall, computer models picking up on and that will continue as we head throughout the evening hours. that is coincidentally when the core of the low pressure is going to be passing over and will have the highest instability which could produce a stray thunderstorm here once again as we head throughout sunday afternoon. let's get you into the morning forecast, 49 in santa rosa. also low 50s down in the south bay. 53 in los gatos. 50 in santa cruz. cooler after those widespread 70s today. we're going to go with upper 60s to near 70 in the south bay. humid again, 68 in [ male announcer ] call to get u-verse tv starting at $19 a month for 2 years with qualifying bundles. rethink possible. with two more exhibition games to play before the giants open the regular season in l.a., giants gathering took place in downtown san francisco this afternoon with the team of giants fans. lots of hugs. a lot of excitement this year around the annual play ball l lunch benefiting the giants community fund and the junior giants program. tons of smiles all around as giants players past and present were joined by around 1,500 giants fans at the union square hilton. as you would expect fans giving a huge cheer for the man of the hour bs reigning national league mvp buster posey who signed a long-term contract with the giants today. >> a nice way for us to kick off the season and get to see the really excited fans and get to play a game at at&t parng last night we were packed house for an exhibition game. it's pretty crazy. >> 0 our annual preseason, a bunch we love, really helped a lot of kids and give them a chance to play sports or any kid that a lot of us have. players love coming here and we're overwhelmed by the support we get here. it's a great thing. we're having a lot of fun. yeah. and the name of the annual event says it all for giants players and fans. it's time to play ball. it's tame to get to sports. >> it's time for feldy. and there he is. >> in the comcast sports newsroom. hi, dave. >> recapping our top story in sports, the reigning national league mvp signs a deal that will likely keep him in orange and black for the rest of his career. that's right, posey agrees to a new mega contract. we bring in mindy bach live. >> reporter: hi, dave. yes, buster posey's eight-year, $167 million contract is the most lucrative deal in the giants' franchise history. the team ceo and president called it the boldest and largest move the team has made and that's saying quite a bit when you consider barry bonds used to be on the roster. but the sentiment around the league not only among the giant community is for a player of buster posey's caliber this it deal is worth it. >> as special a player as he is, he's more than numbers, more than with about any kind of stats or numbers. it's what he is with about. he does things in the right way. he prepares himself. he has work ethic. the all these things. he's really an amazing talent and person and i couldn't be happy for for him, myself, our staff. he's a pleasure to work with. we saw what he did in 2010. for a rookie to come up and change a ball club and help us to win a world series, we're very for ttunate to have a specl talent and person like buster. >> i don't see is how you can play here and not want to spend your career here because a good example is last night in an exhibition game. we had a packed stadium. it just goes to show you the love these fans here have not only for giants baseball but for baseball in general. >> reporter: and posey is catching barry zito tonight and will bat cleanup as he normally does. he's only 26 years old. the giants say what else they like most about him he continues to get even better and posey said despite all he's accomplished already in his short career that he is not resting on his laurels. now with more on the a's side of the three-game exhibition, i turn it over to buddy brazil. >> reporter: the name of oakland's game has been offense in the last seven days. and, yes, this technically still is spring training exhibition baseball. oakland has put up a grand total of 52 runs. guys like eric hitting close to .500 this spring. he's at .480. he says the way oakland is hitting the baseball right now sets up a lot of confidence going into the regular season. >> this is the time we want to prepare from game one. those games count and those will be big games when it comes down to the end of the season. >> i think there's a lot of encouragement. we feel like we're a different team offensively, you know, come the second half of last year to where we are now and we've been scoring runs in spring training. that hasn't been a problem, so we feel like, you know, we have a good 0 offensive club. i'm very encouraged by our offense. >> reporter: tonight the a's are set to face former athletic barry zito who is left-handed. that means a lot of oakland's lineup is going to be right-handed with the exception of smith. he will be oakland's designated hitter. you say what dh? we're in a national league ballpark. remember, are this is still exhibition baseball. in san francisco, brodie brazil, nbc bay area sports. quarterback flynn who was a backup for the seattle seahawks is reportedly heading to the oakland raiders. multiple reports say the s seahawks have agreed to trade flynn in exchange for compensatory draft picks meaning carson palmer's days with the raiders appeared to be numbered.
