months, the "occupy sf" camp is clear. it all started with a big raid early this morning a little after 1:00. morning 100 san francisco -- more than 100 san francisco police officers in riot gear moved into the justin herman plaza. "occupiers" were given five minutes to clear out before crews moved on in. 70 were arrested, more than 100 tents were removed and justin herman plaza declared a public health hazard. gil diaz is at the plaza now, where police are standing by. gil. >> reporter: hi, frank, good afternoon, that's right. police have been standing by guarding the plaza all morning preventing people from reoccupying the plaza. as you see here, the plaza is free of tents and free of "occupiers." where are they? look at mobile5 camera. they have begun congregating outside the federal reserve building a few blocks away. a crowd probably more than 40 of them beginning a rally. but, you know, no matter where they gathered this afternoon, one thing is for sure, the city is taking control. police tore up everything in their path during the predawn raid of the "occupy sf" camp at justin herman plaza. >> i was getting ready to go to bed and somebody said hey, there are riot cops. >> reporter: christopher sullivan said they had five minutes to leave. the cops wouldn't budge from their formation lines around the plaza and along market street seen here on chopper 5. other protestors failed to rescue their things. >> i was on that corner. i asked for them just, give me the medical supplies, please. and they wouldn't give it to me. >> reporter: police chief greg suhr says the raid occurred today because negotiations talks between the city and occupy leaders had deteriorated. they had been offered an abandoned school in the mission district. >> yesterday e-mails weren't returned even though department heads tried to finalize the site. we weren't getting any further negotiations. they had broken off. >> reporter: but occupy leaders tell cbs 5 they gave their latest proposal to the city on monday, that a majority of the demonstrators would move to the mission site but a smaller camp would remain at the plaza. police arrested over 70 people, mostly peaceful. two officers were assaulted, one with flying furniture. >> i know the one a metal chair was thrown over some bodies that were in front of him and it hit him in the face mask of his helmet, broke his face shield and was pressed into his face, but he's okay. >> reporter: maintenance crews worked throughout the morning. operations director from recreation and parks surveyed the damage. a new beginning is in store for the plaza. >> it's going to be a long evident to bring the park back -- it's going to be a long effort to bring the park back, but we have a plan to replant the back and to redo the bocce ball court. we'll bring it back. >> reporter: and mayor ed lee issued a statement this morning. he said that from the beginning of the current "occupy sf" encampment, i have made it clear to protestors that overnight camping at justin herman plaza and on market street is not a sustainable or safe environment for protestors, the general public or city staff. we expect people to continue their "occupy" protest movement and the city will continue to respect and facilitate everyone's fundamental right to peacefully assemble and protest. we're also hearing from the department of public works saying for the belongings of those protestors, they can start getting their things at the department of public works yard located at cesar chavez starting at 1 p.m. today. back to you. >> gil, is the plaza all clean now and open to the public? >> reporter: it's clean but not open to the public. cops are standing by. they have not allowed the general public to even have lunch here. they are standing by because there's a lot of damage to the park as you heard from the director of parks and rec. there's a lot of cleaning up and a lot of replanting to do here at justin herman plaza. >> they had been there for over two months. it probably will take time. thank you, gil diaz live in san francisco. and the city of oakland ditching a plan to hire private security to keep out "occupy" protestors there. the decision saves the city nearly a quarter million dollars. they say it's not necessary now that they have shifted away from the tent cities in oakland. a week after an attack, hiram lawrence, jr., a toddler in a liquor store parking lot when his father and he were shot by a gunman. today his parents tell us doctors want to take their son off life support. anser hassan with a push for more time to safety little boy's life. anser. >> reporter: yeah, frank, good afternoon. as hiram lawrence fights for his life here at children's hospital, his family is fighting with doctors to keep their son alive. the doctors can pull the plug at any time on life support. his mother says he is pleading with doctors to give her son a little more time to put up a fight. this surveillance video shows it all. three gunmen open fire leaving 1-year-old hiram lawrence with a bullet in his head. >> but i think that if hiram had more time to recover and to come out of shock that he will make it and they'll be coming home. >> reporter: doctors at children's hospital in oakland say preliminary tests conclude that the little boy is brain- dead. they now want to do a second round of tests as required by law to confirm their findings so they can legally "pull the plug." but the family isn't ready to do that. they want the hospital to delay further testing hoping to buy enough time so they can get a second opinion. >> the family has no recourse. they can't say, wait. they can't say give us more time. the hospital will determine that. >> reporter: alameda county sheriff's department says one of the possible suspects was attacked by hiram's family when the suspect was spotted at children's hospital two days after the shooting. the family says right now they are not concerned about who did it, just that hiram stays alive. >> right now, that's not my main focus. the officers will handle them. my main focus is my baby. that's nobody else's baby but mine and hiram's. that's our focus. anything else it doesn't matter right now. >> reporter: now, what complicates the matter is the family doesn't have the money to move the son to another hospital. they are only able to raise $405. it's in the hands of the doctors as to what happens next. frank, i should add we reached out to children's hospital for comment. they weren't available. we'll have more at 5:00 and 6:00 as to what the doctors have to say about the situation. >> it's very difficult for both parties. thank you, anser hassan in oakland. former penn state coach jerry sandusky was arrested on new sexual abuse charges today. two more accusers claim sandusky assaulted them. the victims were both part of his second mile charity for underprivileged children. he was arrested, arraigned today in pennsylvania. the new charges raise the total number of alleged victims now from 8 to 10. and former syracuse university assistant basketball coach accused of sexual abuse will not face charges. prosecutors say the accusations are credible but too much time has passed. two former ball boys for syracuse say bernie fine molested them back in the 1980s. 14 years behind bars, that's the sentence a judge handed down to former illinois governor rod blagojevich today. blagojevich was found guilty of trying to sell the senate seat vacated by president obama. he is the second illinois governor to be sentenced for corruption. bail is half a million dollars for a san jose cheerleading coach accused of child molestation. 23-year-old anthony loza was arrested at his home. he coached at andrew hill high school and at energy athletics. police say he recently abused a minor associated with one of the groups. they have no evidence though of any other victims in the case. a $263 million budget deficit is being viewed as good news here in san francisco. that's the latest projection from mayor lee's office for the next fiscal year. the deficit was originally estimated at $350 million. there was an unexpected increase in revenue from property and sales taxes. san jose city council agrees to place a controversial pension reform measure on the june ballot. reforms include increasing contributions for current employees and limiting report. the job market in the area grew by 3.2% over 12 months ending in october. compare that to the east bay's .1% growth. the south bay's job growth outpacing the national rate by three times. so that's great news. experts believe the surge will power a bay area-wide job expansion. producers of the popular tv show "mythbusters" are trying to figure out what went wrong in dublin as an experiment sent a cannonball ripping through homes in a neighborhood there. the 5.5" cannonball moving as fast as a bullet made several holes in this home on cassata place. you can see them there. it then hit the roof of another house, finally landed on top of a minivan. nobody was hurt. the discovery channel show fired the cannonball from the alameda county bomb range yesterday. that's nearly two miles away. >> this cannonball was supposed to go through several barrels of water and through a cinderblock and then ultimately into the side of a hill. >> "mythbusters" has used the firing range dozens of times without any problems. but yesterday, they had a problem. how about some baseball news? san francisco giants may have a new lead hitter. they have traded andres torres along with reliever ramon ramirez to the new york mets. torres's production dropped off and was not expected to be a starter in the outfield in 2012. had a big world series year though. the giants get outfielder angel pagan. he stole 32 bases, hit .262 and will likely be the new leadoff hitter. the fight will continue. why the health department is saying no way to an over-the- counter morning-after pill. a ball of fire went about 57, 100 feet in the air. >> survivors of the attack on pearl harbor gather in hawaii today. the special event marking today's somber 70th anniversary. >> a cold start to the like t east coast? >> she likes the change of seasons. oh, it's 25 degrees in santa rosa. >> that's los angeles. that's southern california. >> it's been cold and dry around the bay area. outside now we have a lot of sunshine, hazy sunshine. you see that in the atmosphere, "spare the air" day as we're seeing a lot of the pollutants trapped down below but it's not too bad right now. the temperatures just beginning to warm up after another cold start to the day. 54 in concord. 56 right now in oakland. and 54 degrees in san francisco. you know, as we head in toward the afternoon, looking pretty good. but we may see a couple of patches of fog developing, some of that ground fog may develop around the bay area tonight and into tomorrow morning. overnight lows because of that ground fog probably not going to be quite as cold. still, we are looking at this high remaining in place, just some minor fluctuations over the next couple of days and then on the weekend things are going to change. today seasonal temperatures and "spare the air" day in the area and into tomorrow. the temperatures are expected to be okay. 59 in livermore. 60 degrees and sunny in san jose. and about 58 degrees in vallejo. i think as we head toward the nighttime, though, those temperatures are going to be chilly again although not as cold. about 36 degrees in the napa valley, 36 in santa rosa and about 37 in livermore. as we look toward the next few days, minor changes as we'll see lots of sunshine today and a little hazy side. tomorrow picking up a few more clouds in our forecast but by the afternoon, temperatures in the 50s and 60s. over the weekend a system in the bay area will bring with it a few more clouds. and it looks like for the most part that system is going to miss us. but otherwise, we'll watch those temperatures cooling down. speaking of cool, i'll tell you what, it is wide open getting up to the snow report if you want to check it out. high country looking good. a lot of sunshine and, of course, no fog in the central valley now. that may change though. heavenly no new snow. they are waiting for it. but it's cold enough that they are making plenty up there so enjoy it. couple of feet of base there. also, northstar looking good, 18" of base. partly cloudy skies. not bad to get up there if you are headed up there this weekend. >> it's 20 in some of the hollows around the bay area, it's chilly up there. >> frigid. very, very cold in the morning. >> skiers will love that. >> they will be able to make the snow and it won't melt. >> thank you. the plan b morning-after pill will not be available to teens without a prescription. the fda was preparing to lift the age limit of the pill currently only available to anyone 17 and older without a prescription. but in a rare overruling, the health and humans secretary overruled the agency saying she was concerned that young girls would not understand how to use it. new study out of the uc-san francisco says pot when combined with narcotics is a safe effective treatment for chronic pain. it's the first study to look at the combined effects of the two drugs together. if the results can be backed up by further studies, doctors say it could lead to an improved quality of life for those living with chronic pain associated with a variety of conditions. well, today is the 70th anniversary of the attack on pearl harbor. veterans are marker the day in hawaii as they always do at the memorial on the island of owe oahu. sandra hughes report. >> reporter: the event was seared in the mindsful all who were alive. >> december 7, 1941, a date which will live in infamy. >> reporter: it was a time when america pulled together as it was pulled into world war ii. for those were there, pearl harbor can never be forgotten. >> i'll tell their story until the rest of my life. >> reporter: delton watched in horror from the communications tower as ships burned in front of his eyes. >> you couldn't see the ships because of all the smoke. >> reporter: he had fought his own battle just to get there going as far as convincing a surgeon to amputate his bent finger he could enlist. >> i got to get in the service. >> reporter: memories like that are keeping the pearl harbor story alive told by survivors at local clubs and schools. but those with firsthand knowledge are passing away. the pearl harbor survivors association is disbanding at the end of the year. there aren't enough members to keep it going. >> when these survivors are gone, the stories will go with them. but whether history will live on is a question. >> reporter: she is veterans fear pearl harbor will be forgotten and a lesson on how to keep america safe will be lost. sandra hughes, cbs news, honolulu. e a k
