In the Stormy Daniels saga. The lawyer for Stormy Daniels whos real name is clifford. This picture comes from a polygraph examination when she was asked about her relationship donald trump. All of this comes on a day when nbc news also confirms the administration is beefing up its legal team just as special Counsel Robert MuellerPresses Forward with the russia investigation. Reporter we have asked and there is no response, but it appears the president is in the mood to make changes to his legal team, as the russia probe continues to cast a shadow over his presidency. The Washington Post reported earlier this afternoon. To join the president s group of lawyers and as we were trying to confirm that, olsens legal partner tweeted that only less th than olsen would not be he was apprehensive at best. That was the phrase he used. Yesterday President Trump added the fox news regular to his press steam. He is the target of an elaborate fbi conspiracy and that in itself is a sign that the president isnt backing away on what are now personalized attacks on robert mueller. In yesterdays press briefing the Sarah Sanders was asked why the president didnt just shut d down the mueller probe. She was also asked why the president in his conversations today with russian president Vladimir Putin failed to bring up russias meddling in the election, instead congratulating him, putin, that is on his victory. Does the white house believe that the u. S. Election but free and fair . In terms of the election, theyre refocused on our elections. We dont get to dictate how other other councountries opera. That prompted this scathing response against john mccain. He put this on twitter. America does not lead the free world by congratulating dictators on winning sham elections and by doing so with Vladimir Putin. All right, jeff, bennett, thanks very much. As i mentioned, a former playboy model is taking the same route as Stormy Daniels and is suing to tell her story about her relationship with donald trump. The Company Reportedly paid mcdomcd mcdougle. Its a very well pointed out story, jim, that in this particular case, she thought she was selling her story to an organization in exchange for some things she was going to get plus money . Yeah, Karen Mcdougal, this is all in 2016, the context is the president ial election and she engages in talks with ami a couple of times, but the key in this lawsuit is, basically shes told by her own lawyer they are going to buy your story to not publish it. This is the leading tabloid company in the world, not to publish it and in return youre going to get a certain number of columns printed, youre going to be on the cover of some magazines and what she and her lawyer now are contending is that she was led to believe that that was absolutely an obligation and it was not the obligation she says she was led to believe. And she was represented by a lawyer whos in this type of business when youre trying to sell your story to a group Like National enquirer. And in the lawsuit, she alleges that she may not have gotten good advice from her lawyer at the time. Reporter her daughter, dala said interestingly, this same lawyer also represented Stormy Daniels in her initial deal with michael cohen, the president s lawyer for her silence, which shes challenging now in a suit as well with a different lawyer. What is likely to happen in this case . There are some similarities in the stories she alleges to be the case in her relationship with donald trump, what she says trump offered her and in terms of the money that was involved. There is also the question of michael cohen, whether he played a role in this deal with this playboy model. The suit alleges that mr. Cohen was in contact with American Media during these negotiations, we already hat the times had previously reported that ami did talk to her during the course of the reporting. We lost learned that there was some outreach between the lawyer and michael cohen. But where this goes from now, well see, like the Stormy Daniels case, the question is does it get into open court . Like stephanie clifford, there was an agreement to have this hashed out in confidential arbitration, in secret proceedings, shes taking it to open court, to the question is will the court hear this. What does this all mean for the president . Ari melber, msnbcs chief legal corporate and the host of the beat with ari melber and i know you were on tv when all this broke so i know you have chewed on some of this. Talk to me about what you think this means. The president , does he have to respond to this . Does this start to unfold the Supreme Court ruled that president s do have to respond to civil cases even while in office, and that was part of the scandal that bedeviled bill clinton. So he does have to response and he also entered the Stormy Daniels litigation under his own name on friday. The mcdougal case with an also known as . A. K. A. Donald denison. There was a suit that people may not have connected. It would seem to be in that case, and that goes against to how far and how fast we would move, because the white house was denying i think we have that point you raised, i can read from that, it says donald j. Trump, a. K. A. David denison, and it goes on to say that mr. Trump will pursue his rights to the fullest extent permitted by law, that yes, he would be part of the Stormy Daniels case. Whats most interesting about this breaking news today is the suggestion that maybe the deal was built on a die or a fraud, that would allow this new woman Karen Mcdougal to say she was miss l misled or didnt understand, maybe legally she gets to speak. The legally misled or didnt understand . Were getting into deep, and were getting into whether there was legal malpractice in the case we just received with the New York Times reporter. The bottom line for folks whose heads are turning is, today, all of a sudden, the president of the United States has three cases that are moving head. Stormy daniels, also known as Stephany Clifford and Karen Mcdougal. Some sort of evidence that a polygraph examiner said that when she testified or she spoke about her affair with donald trump, there was a 99 likelihood that she was telling the truth. Yeah, msnbc investigations obtained the photo youre looking at. Whats important about this is that its from to2011, and that goes to her argument that shes not just showing up while hes president or during the campaign but rather there was an earlier dispute and thats where this all started and second that she told the truth about these allegations which now are being held out of court based on what i mentioned, trump basically suing her on friday saying she cant talk. How accurate are lie detectors, theyre not allowed in court. Theyre generally believed to be 70 accurate. But would you want the biggest thing in your life hanging on 70 odds . Thats a 30 chance it could be wrong. Tonight be sure to catch a special edition of the beat. Ari is going to be reporting on the mccabe fighting as well as the comey firing a year after comey first revealed that the fbi was investigating the Trump Campaign. Thats at 6 00 p. M. Eastern on aris show. Ari, thanks very much. There are new details this afternoon about the scope and impact of russian meddling in the 2016 election from the senate intel committee. As the chairmans indicated, there were 21 states that were attempted to be intervention in and at least one state that was full hacking, that got through the protections. That was democratic senator mark warner, speaking after members of the committee released a summery of its first report on u. S. Election security. Lets go to casey hunt who has the latest on this investigation. Reporter ari, in a somewhat amusing twist, one of the top recommendations is that perhaps states should return to simply using paper ballots. But in 2018, all these devices that run our lives, that really the safest way to keep our elections safe is to go to those paper ballots. I apologize about the noise behind me, theres a rally going on in the rotunda. But there was not necessarily a lot of blockbuster headlines out of this press conference, there was a reaffirmation on all members of the committee. That russia is the problem here. Take a look at what the chair had to say. Casey, im sorry, we cant hear you very clearly. Capabilities, and probably not the only one that has intent. It but clearly the russians had intent to cause chaos in the u. S. Election system and they had the capabilities to do it. And its all of the above, its a good defense that we work with states to try to implement the ability for the federal government to look inside the cyber system and to see when attacks take place. Reporter so alley i think its hard to hear me. Breaking this hour, cambrid cambridge an lit can has suspended its ceo. After a full independent investigation, hes the one secretly reported by channel 4 talking about the role that the company had in trumps election. Have you met mr. Trump . Many times. You have . All the data, all the an lit ticks, all the television, and i basically formed stratehis stra. Cambridge analyitca never claimed it won the election for President Trump. Now this is a complicated story, you want to statake a closer lo at the timeline of it all. It begins in 2013, it began when publish behavioral Science Company scl group. He financed a 1. 5 million pilot group led by scl elections director Alexander Knicks and that company would later become. This practice stopped in mid 2014, but some apps were given a short grace period. In june of 2013, then scl employee, found Alexander Cohen to develop a personality mapping app that wileys team deployed on facebook. About 270,000 users took the personality test. That month, Robert Mercer invested 15 million to formally create cambridge analytics by breitbart analyst steve bannon. Warning them that knicks was not a u. S. Citizen or green card holder and therefore could not be in active management. According to Christopher Wiley who left the company in late 2014, Cory Lewandowski visited cambridge an lalytics in 2015. Lewandowski denies that claim. But later that year, facebook discovered coburns app captured data from up to 50 million profiles. Cambridge said it destroyed the data at facebooks request. But the data still existed on the servers in june of 2016. They we asa a assange Trumps Campaign schedule was determined in part by Cambridge Analyticas data. In november, trump won the presidency over hillary clinton. Over the past weekend, facebook suspended Cambridge Analyticas profile for the date that that was taken nearly a year ago. This is new video from Cambridge Analytica executives. Channel 4 obtained it by having reporters pose as prospective clients in the undercover video. Executives brag about just how influential they were to the Trump Campaign and how congress doesnt understand their technology. But turning now to texas where residents are hunkering down in their homes as officials there search for a serial bomber. Overnight another bomb exploded at a fedex location in san antonio. In the latest atalattack, the suspect mailed the package via fedex. Reporter were actually here at a fedex location, we see a fbi Computer Analysis Response Team here just a short time ago, we saw investigators looking for fingerprints at that fedex store right there. Now fedex has released a statement that as far as this investigation, fedex sent two packages, a source who briefed us on the investigation said that two packages, one of them ended up at the facility in san antonio exploded overnight. Fedex would not specify what facility was were told by sources that have been briefed on the investigation that police were planning to detonate that explosi explosive. The source told us that the package that exploded near san antonio had nails inside the package, there was one worker who suffered minor injuries, just some ringing in her ears, but no one was seriously injured. But the concern is, could this bomber be trying different tactics here . We know in that fourth explosion that happened on sunday evening, that that one involved a trip wire, whereas the first three had been deliveries that were dropped off on peoples doorsteps, we are still awaiting the latest in this investigation from austin, police, right now, there have been hundreds of federal agents the atf and the fbi, and this is a very fast moving investigation, again, we are told that the bomber may have dropped off two packages at this fedex facilities and then at least one of them ended up at that fedex facility near san antonio on the Conveyor Belt and thats when it exploded overnight. Were there more packages that have been dropped off . Were looking at this surveillance video, the computer response Analysis Team looking at video from these cameras, perhaps looking at if they can find out who this suspect was. So far investigators are not been able to nail down a motive, but theyre working very hard to do that right now. This is a fast developing story, well stay on top of it with you. Welcome to the party. Another story we have been following all day, another shooting at a school, this one at Great Mills High School in great mills, maryland about 50 miles southwest of d. C. Police say that the resource officer fired at the gunman in the hallway. One of the students, a 16yearold girl is at the hospital with lifethreatening injuries, another student, a 14yearold is also in the hospital and the gunman died. Reporter this was a situation where you have a school that was very well prepared and still this was a shocking, terrifying moment as it would be anywhere, the school does lockdown drills and shooter drills, but this happened just as students were arriving at school, just after 8 00. Police say this 17yearold shooter pulled out a hand gun and fired at that 16yearold girl. They think that the two had some kind of relationship, although thats something thats under investigation right now. Just that single shot set off pandemonium, one student described to me running for his life. Take a listen. I heard the shot, and i just we just was thinking we got to get out of the school. We ran away from the gunshot and i like glanced behind me and i saw a girl with like a blond pony tail, like, fall forward, im not sure if she like probably fell from panicking or something or if she actually got hit. Reporter other students we talked to hid in bathrooms, they hid in classrooms. The school went on lockdown, but it turns out the entire incident was over in just a moment. From the first shot to the last shot, likely less than one minute. The School Resource officer happened to be in the right place to intervene in this case, he fired a shot and we dont know if thats the fatal shot that took down this shooter but was able to intervene in less than a minute and save lives in this case. Coming up brandnew undercover video showing executives from Cambridge Analytica, thats the company collecting millions of americans data and using it during the campaign. We are going to return to our top story, the Data Collection company Cambridge Analytica,. Earlier we showed you video of him bragging about shaping the Trumps Campaign message and strategy. In a new video, he mocks american lawmakers on the House Intelligence Committee to whom he testified just last year, listen. Have you met mr. Trump . Many times. You have . We did all the research, all the data, all the analytics, we ran the digital campaign, the Television Campaign and basically formed the analytical strategy. In response to this latest fooda fooda footage, Cambridge Analytica says it had never claimed it won the election for President Trump. And in a statement on the Cambridge Analytica situation, facebook said, quote, we are committed to vigorously enforcing our policies. Facebook has had an all hands meeting, Mark Zuckerberg was not there. I want to bring in Anna Scheckter whos following this for us. Its mindboggling, all these things that are happening so fast. Two days ago, nobody knew the names of all the people involved. Whats at the crux of this . Cambridge analytica is financed by somebody who was financing donald Trumps Campaign and certainly in an article in fortune last year and in other instances, they have claimed a good deal of success of the campaign. For those people who have been following it, these people were central to the strategy that led to Donald Trumps victory . Reporter thats right, the americans that Cambridge Analytica hired to go work with pascual says that they did great work. Now that Everyone Wants to distance themselves from Cambridge Analytica, they dont want to undermine what they did do. Cambridge analytica was born out of a uk form. Has the technology been largely the same, they mine data and then develop strategies around how to distribute that . The digital revolution and the social media revolution we have all been experiencing has changed the way all of these political operative companies are working. So now, Cambridge Analytica has shifted to use social media data just like everybody else. Cambridge analyticas Parent Company back in the uk has been going political work around the world for years and whether it was disseminating rumors about opposition candidates or what have you, they know this game well. As you research this more and more, and as you investigate this, what are you thinking about what happened . In other words, is it very clear that anything here was done illegally or not . Have they been skirting around an industry that really hasnt been able to develop rules around what is legal and what isnt legal about social Media Information . I think we have to bring in facebook, we need to ask ourselves as a society, do we want all of our personal Information Available for companies to mine and use . Here in particular, we have a political operation that is using that data and so it becomes a little bit more sensitive. I think american laws have to pick up the pace and catch up to where we are and what we are dealing with. Generally speaking, theyre a little more ahead of this in europe and particularly the regulation of media companies, now in this case, facebook continues to insist its not a media company, but uk authorities are looking closely at Cambridge Analytica and its use of data mining. In fact Mark Zuckerberg has been asked to go and testify. They are looking at facebook with theyre strongly looking at facebook. There are other things that we need to look at and that is whether or not any election laws were broken in the United States, the federal election commission, are they looking into this . Well, i think they should, the Parent Company in the uk was set up scl. Scl, so the people working at scl who then transferred over to Cambridge Analytica to launch that u. S. Branch of the company, theyre really the same people working together. They did hire a group of americans to work on the ground, but this is essentially a uk company. All right, this will be interesting to continue to follow. It is a complicated story, thanks for the reporting youre doing on this. Anna scheckter is with nbc newss investigative unit. The big question is how Cambridge Analytica got the information they used to help spread fake news. A new first of its kind study by m. I. T. Shows that fake news reaches people faster than real news does. They studied 126,000 news stories and found that users shared false information 70 more than they did with real information. Im joined by author and researchers of the study, a professor at the m. I. T. School of management who has worked closely with Many Companies including facebook. Professor, good to see you, thanks for being with us. We heard this anecdotally, we heart that the 20 most prominent fake news stories on facebook were distributed more than the 20 most real 20 real stories. I guess the question is, when you build a fake news story, you can do so with an eye to what is going on read and what is going to be spread, when youre reporting the real news, youre constrained by facts. Absolutely, so the fake news stories are more salacious typically, they attract attention, they are taking advantage of known things that human beings tend to focus evenion as well as sharing the status that other people dont know. And in those ways they travel further, faster and more broadly than real news. And they are today laylor. We now know enough by what is considered the truth that your story may be more attractive. There could be microtargeted stories for different populations that have different types of things they are looking to read online. The combination of these two things could be potentially very dangerous. I will say we dont really know enough, this study was a very large comprehensive study over ten years, but the Scientific Evidence is currently very scarce, theres not really a lot of knowledge talk to me about this microtargeting of stories, the idea is that i know that i can get people to believe that a ufo landed in central park, but i could actually talk about any park in america. You can make the stories available to smaller and smaller groups of people. And you c we also dont see necessarily which stories go to which people, so its very difficult to know what type of messaging makes it to whom. So it makes it difficult to regulate and control even if you are the platform. So there are a number of things we need to look at when looking at these two stories. Whether its Cambridge Analytica, or its russians or troll farms, it all depends on people, consumers, reading, not discerning that theyre fake or false or not caring. And then spreading it. Ultimately we are the spreader of the virus. Yeah, absolutely. So theres been a lot of congressional testimony in the house and the senate, as well as a lot of Media Attention for instance on the role of bots in the spread of false news, in our study, what we found when we compared the bottl ed the bots. So human beings are more to blame than we might have previously thought. So is the solution to somehow stem this at the root or is it to immunize us against false news . Because there have been few and scant efforts to do so. I think its a little bit of both. So there is certainly an economic incentive to create false news because the social Media Advertising ecosystem benefits those that get more eye balls to content. And as Roger Mcnamee says when he talks to me about this, this is not an abuse of this platform, its what it was intended for. Cambridge analytica is the idea that essentially, you know, more eyeballs attracts more advertising dollars is the business model. But thats also in some sense good because people who are then spending time on facebook are seeing stories that are relevant to them. The thing we have to do is wide out whats false and whats true. Now youve mentioned at the root or immunize us. I think the answer is that for instance by giving us more education, more labeling of information, like we label food extensively, we can immunize us to be better at sharing news online. But did disincentivizing the spread of false news, you can actually get it at its root. If there is less of an economic in incentive. If algorithms dont pay for stories that get the most attention, we can change those algorithms. Trump suggesting to reporters in the room he may scrap the agreement all together. The potential repercussions of that after the break, youre watching msnbc. Thou hast the patchy beard of a prepubescent squire thy armor was forged by a feeblefingered peasant woman. Earlier today the president welcomed saudi arabias crown prince mohammad bin salman to the white house, hes the son of the king, but he basically runs things in saudi arabia. Its the second time the two leaders have met at the nations capitol. He had this warning. Translator saudi arabia does not want to acquire any nuke career bom clear bomb, but if iran got a nuclear bomb, we would have to follow suit. Saudi arabia is the de facto leader of opec, its the largest exporter of petroleum, oil and gas and things like that among the organizations members. The company has committed numerous violations of humanitarian law. That is a war that is basically been kept alive by saudi arabia. Joining me now is Nbc News National Political reporter Vivian Solana who knows a lot about the region. We have always had a close relationship with saudi arabia, but it does seem that the saudis and their somewhat destabilizing activities in the middle east these days have got the blessings of the Trump Administration. It seems like the Donald Trump Administration really tries to say no to the saudis. He said saudi arabia is a very rich country and because of that wealth, they do have a lot of clout. President trump really resting his hopes on the fact that saudi arabia brings some of that wealth into the u. S. In the form of investments, Business Opportunities and of course jobs for americas and so for that reason, you see that in a lot of cases he really tends to give a little leeway to the saudis for their domestic affairs, of course thats not exclusive to the saudis, President Trump talking about the russians and they tend to do that with a lot of companies so on the one hand you have these sweeping reforms that bin salman has been doing in the country. And there is concerns that some of these reforms may be problematic, have as you just m the military offensive against yemen. The white house now starting to raise concerns about it but not in a way that is too forceful, and the saudis ultimately saying this is our domestic affairs, this is a matter of our National Security and so back off, essentially. The Trump Administration is. With iran, though, because, you know, while the president is a big supporter of israel, israel and iran are archenemies, iran and saudi arabia are also archenemies for a lot of historical and other reasons. So the president who has not liked this iran deal to start with, has got israel on one hand, netanyahu whispering into his ear about how high should end it, and hes got Mohammed Bin Salman doing the same thing on the other side. That can be a little bit destabilizing in that region. Absolutely. You just saw that clip that the cbs interview where the crown prince ultimately said if iran is left to its own vices and allowed to pursue a nuclear bomb, we are going to do the same thing. That is concerning for a lot of people, concerning for the United States, its very concerning for israel. Yes, there are warmer ties between israel and saudi arabia these days. The United States has a Good Relationship with them. But the last thing they want is an arms race in the middle east among foes and you have that situation going on now. Now the United States is pushing very, very hard to strike a deal with the saudis. Something called the one, two, three agreement, in which it essentially agrees to comply with peaceful uses of any kind of nuclear activity, but the saudis refuse to do it. They say its a matter of their own sovereignty and theyve really pushed back on signing this one, two, three agreement. At the end of the day the United States wants to build plants, power plants, in saudi arabia. According to u. S. Law, they cannot do that unless the saudis agree to comply with the peaceful use and so thats where we stand right now. And its why rick perry, our energy secretary, was seated right next to the president. Yep. During that meeting today at the white house. About money and energy. All right, vivian, thanks very much. Parents arent perfect, but then they make us Kraft Mac Cheese and everythings good again. Reuters reporting the president is expected to announce this week up to 60 billion in new tariffs on imports from china, targeting technology, telecommunication and intellectual property. I want to bring in ian bremer, hes the president of the eurasia group. I ian, look, people who know about u. S. Trade with china know the intellectual property, the failure of china to protect u. S. Intellectual property, is an issue, and, in fact, if youre going to target something, thats something you should do. My concern is the way this administration handles trade, has tended to be so hamficsted. Could there be unintended consequences in doing this . Sure. Lets keep in mind unlike nafta, unlike europe, unlike australia, south korea, all of those American Allies where you have republicans and Business Leaders together just hammering on trump and saying, dont do this. Right. Its going to hurt. You dont see them doing that on china. Right. For precisely the reason you said, the average corporate ceo right now, not only has ip issues, they dont have the access they want into the chinese market. All the things that trump generally complains about with trade, many are valid for china. Thats right. Now, also lets keep in mind, theres a lot of mutually assured economic destruction so when we hit them, we cost them a couple hundred Million Dollars on a solar panel, which we did a couple months ago, they hit us on feed for animals. If we hit them on aluminum and steel, theyre going to hit us back. Same thing will be true with intellectual property. We will take that cost. Right. They will target red states. Right. Because they understand this is coming from the republicans. The thing that concerns me more meaning theyll target them by putting tariffs on things that are made in or that are use workers in red states. Yes. The thing that concerns many he more is that this has the potential to get beyond just trade. You may have seen trump recently signed this taiwan travel act that really sets the stage for highlevel american officials to travel to taiwan and vice versa, something we basically have not done since 1979. Right. That is absolutely more important to the chinese than anything on trade. Right. And its more likely to lead them to overreacting, yet im fairly certain that most of trumps supporters dont give a dam h damn about the taiwanese. A sophisticated argument we have to deal with in a so dig sophisticated way. The chinese abuse certain things with our relationship with them. How do you fix this without going down the road of a war, a trade war, the context is we need need china for help with north korea. Yes, we do. The fact is the chinese dont want a trade war with the u. S. , our economy is considerably greater. The ability to push them on trade and say, if you dont take this seriously, and here are our demands on trade, we will hit you, then you hit us back, i think does lead to more flexibility. Right. He had no idea what he was doing. Right. The chinese went ballistic. Right. I wouldnt be doing that. Id be actually focusing on all of the lack of level playing field. Right. The president today speaking on the phone with russian president Vladimir Putin two days after putins landslide victory in russias president ial election. An election widely condemned by critics as rigged. And five days after the u. S. Imposed those sanctions against russian nationals for meddling in the u. S. Elections in 2016. So you can imagine, the president of the United States would certainly have a lot to say to his russian counterpart. Heres what he did say. I had a call with president putin and congratulated him on the victory. His electoral victory. We had a very good call and i suspect that well probably be meeting in the not too distant into up to discuss the arms race which is getting out of control, but we will never allow anybody to
