Today in the capitol, nine democratic president ial contenders are speaking. Joe biden is set to speak in about 30 minutes from now, well bring that you live. Well hear from voters and preparations for these first democratic debate of the 2020 election which is now just nine days away. Twonight event live from miami hosted right here on msnbc and nbc news and telemundo. Joining us now from todays forum. Our friend ali vitali. For those who are unfamiliar of this event, give us an idea of the purpose whos there and what contenders are in the room . Reporter the purpose of the campaign is an event as reverend b barber saying it is not for the poor people but with the poor people. We hear so many of these 2020 candidates talk about of the wealth gap. Nine of them are taking the stage today. This Group Released their policy ideals last year, today they are coming out with a moral budget. Their suggestion of how lawmakers could get tho theo th policies thatll help with america impoverish we were listening to some of the things that activists were mentioning of 15 minimum wage and spending less on defense spending and more on things like education. It did sound like a Bernie Sanders or elizabeth warrens rally. Talking to activists and voters, those are the people who they are looking to hear from. Ali, thank you so much. I look forward to hear what joe biden has to say. Poll numbers have rattled President Trump and the campaign is cutting ties with some of its own pollsters. Cutting ties because they are mad of the leak. Washington post were reporting maybe the leak were on purpose to get to the president. No one wants to give the president bad news. He did not seem to be accepting the news that the polls actually had. It was like he never heard it. The president is trailing former joe bid president joe biden. President trump is ahead of biden in one state, in texas. Here is what is the president said in an interview with abc news. Even your own poll shows you are behind right now. No, my poll shows that i have been winning everywhere. You are behind. We have all seen these reports, 15 out of 27 states those polls dont exist. I had a meeting with somebody thats a pollster and i am winning everywhere. How are they that close in the car . Some people think we sit too close. That was stephanopoulos and donald trump. Maybe the way the camera was. Even if you take the president at his words, those polls dont exist, they do exist. The new polling from fox news appears to backup those very same weak numbers. Joining us now steve cornacki who has information on nonleaked polls. These are published polls. These are polls that anybody can see. The new fox news polls. Thats the president s favorite network. If you are looking here, this is reputable public poll. This is what they found and it is consistent of what other pollsters are finding from other outlets who are checking in right now. You match the president s name up against the likely democratic poebt opponents he could face. A lead for biden. You see these candidates early on with an advantage fover trum. Thats been an Approval Rating. You see the average Approval Rating, if you look at every poll thats out there. His Approval Rating is probably going to be trailing for perspective opponents in polling like this. The question with trump as of 2016, can he ultimately if it is biden or sanders, can he make his democratic polling in 2020 as unpalettable to a lot of voters as trump himself did. Trump was able to do that and created the right set of circumstances for him to win. You look at these polls, looks loo i c like the same story in 2020. Walk us through how this could change quickly because when you put the entire thing into perspective, the entire gop, they looked at polls everyday. They gotten in lock steps with the president in fear of not standing with them will cost them the election. So much of this is, 2016. You remember 2016. We dont remember as well from the polling though. Think of where we were at this point. Well, yes. Early on, he moved up at the republican race. We had a poll came out around this time 2015 that put trump around 1 . He moved up very quickly. He got in the race, he got that first debate. He was leading that race by summer of 2015. Thats before the first debate. I tell ya, except for three days in november when he fell behind ben carson. He led wire to wire in that republican race. We say it is early and it cha s changes a lot. Trump was locked in. What are the milestones to you about when people start paying real attention . When the poll matters because people really heard the candidates and giver them consideration and it is not about name recognition. In terms of the primarieprim they are tuning in right now. We saw in 2015, that refers to republican debate. We are looking at 25 Million People tuned in. You will see a level of interest thats on par with that. This one in terms of the general election. To me the question is, trump seems like somebody, the verdict on trump and peoples views on trump, i am not sure how much have changed since 2016. The variable is whats the view of his democratic opponents could be. Hillary clintons 2016 polling, 43 . That was just low enough to give donald trump an opening. After a campaign with donald trump, what is biden . What is sanders and what is warrens . Are they support north of 43 in trump got to change. Has anything changed at all . You are so good at this. I can listen to steve cornacki talk about polls kind of forever. I dont know, it is going to be interesting. Are people going to be enthused . Where will the trumpers be this time . Steve cornacki. We dont want more. Mike pompeo told fox news over the weekend, the United States has undisclosed intelligence provering iran was the responsible of the attack in the gu gulf of ohman last week. The pompeo was pressed on how far the Trump Administration may go in response to this and other attack, including a rocket attack on an american drone. Here is the second interview. The United States is considering full range. Well keep the president updated. We are confident that we can take a set of accs that can return to terms. You say a full range of options. Does that include a military response . Of course, the president will consider everything we need to do to make sure. Joining us now, ali arussi. Trump has said hes opened to direct talks with iran. There was an opportunity for that when the iran deal was in place. The iran deal, the president of the United States pulled out of. So is that a possibility, is that something these two countries are talking about because we are seeing this low level escalation play out on the side, that can get dangerous. Thats right, there was an opening between the two sides. It is always complicated between iran and america. Look, if the u. S. Would standby the jcp. After all the point of the nuclear deal. Give up your pursuit of a nuclear bomb and enjoy economic prosperity. If we were in that situation, then it would have undoubtedly be easier today for the u. S. To talk to iran. There would have been challenge of communications opening. Foreign investment pouring into the country which we were close to happening. Firms from all over the globe lining out and getting into what they saw of the last frontier of the market, inflation was down and jobs number was up here. It would have been very difficult for powers to be in iran to forfeit an economy for ideology. With that said, it would have never been easy whether everybody was in the deal or not to convince iran to give up its Missile Program or regional influence. If the u. S. Was sealing a deal, they may have reach some sort of compromise together. Dialogue and add vaversary is essential. We are not in that situation today now, it is uncertain. Several of our western allies remain in that deal and they want protected. There is news this morning may make it difficult and potential for what they call an unlimited rise. What does it mean . Why will it affect us and how could it affect the Iran Nuclear Deal . Thats a direct reaction to irans reaction to europe. Not being able to protect iran from u. S. Sanctions. They are now taking small but very provacative steps that could have much wider implications in the near future. The countrys spokesperson announced this morning that the iran will break the nuclear limit and set the deal when ten days. And so theyll carry on increasing as and how they need to until they get to that 20 threshold which will then make it easy to get the 90 purity of what you need to know to build a bomb. Ali arouzi for us joining us from iran. We got breaking news from cairo, Muhammad Morsi has died. He fainted in a Court Session and died soon after. Morsi you will remember was a leader in the Muslim BrotherhoodPolitical Party. A spokesperson some what obscure to the world who then ended up becoming egypts president in 2012 in the midst of arab. He was ousted. A major decision from the Supreme Court on your vote and gerrymandering. Why it matters going into the 2020 elections. Well hear from joe biden speaking at an event in washington, you will see it here live as soon as it begins. You are watching velshi ruhle on msnbc. Hi ruhle on msnbc. Oh my, this heinz mayonnaise is so creamy, one day youll tell your grandkids about it. And theyll say, grandpa just tell us about humpty dumpty. And youll say, he broke his pelvis or whatever, now back to my creamy heinz mayonnaise. Heinz mayonnaise, unforgettably creamy. A potential win for democrats today, a Supreme Court ruling taking on gerrymandering. The high court lets stand a 2018 ruling that 11 Virginia House districts violated the rights of black voters. To explain how that happens, you have to explain what gerrymandering is and why it matters to your vote. Every ten years, Congressional District drawing. Based on the census by the way. Thats why it is so important. The legislature draws the district meaning the Majority Party has power over redistricting. Gerrymandering happens when districts are designed to benefit the Political Party thats drawn in the maps. Like these historic gerrymandering district. How do you draw something of a district of that shape or that shape. The reason some districts looked really weird because they are drawn without reasons. There is a reason, it is a concentrated votes. Gin a quick note on the name, stephanie ruhle, i know you loo i c like this one. Massachusetts governor gary, he approved, declaring the s itself district looks like a salamander. They coined the term gary mander. Either way the name and the concept stuck. Joining us now, pete williams. Republican legislatures were accused of racial gerrymander to disadvantage black voters. Explain what happened today. Well, they lost in a threejudge panel. The last census district lines for the state house and state senate were unconstitutional because they took race into account of the disadvantage of minority voters. The court redo its own map and the state basically said okay, we give up. We are not going to appeal that. Today the Supreme Court says sorry. A single house for the Virginia Legislature cant carry this fight on in the states name. So there is not a lot of new ground broken here. For one thing the Supreme Court has years for at least 30 or 40 years, struck down state house and senate and Congressional Districts as unconstitutional racial gerrymandering. That was the issue in this case before it got to the Supreme Court. All the Supreme Court ruling stands for who gets to appeal in a case like that. There is no immediate practice in virginia because they had an election on tuesday using the old map. The state will draw entirely new ones. This is a racial gerrymandering. This is not a partisan gerrymandering. Thats a big one. Is this a surprise . I dont think so, the Supreme Court is asked to put a hold on that court drawn map. It allowed the current map go into effect and that was an Early Warning of the republicans in virginia that theyre not going to prevail. Pete williams for us on the issue of racial gerrymandering. Well discuss it another day. Coming up next, President Trump is trailing joe biden in several polls. Well be in western pennsylvania, hearing from trump voters who may swing back to blue in 2020. Eight other president ial candidates are also speaking at the event today. We are nine days away from the first 2020 democratic debate. Voters are speaking out. President obama if recall won pennsylvania in 2008 and 2012. President trump took the state in 2016, now it is one of the handful states where trump is trailing joe biden. The real clear politics average puts trump ten points behind biden in pennsylvania. It is a long time away. Will joe biden be the contender . Exactly. Our news road warriors are talking to voters across the country. Joining us our friend, host of nbc, savannah, you are in a red district in a swing state. Support for donald trump there, what is it looking like . Reporter last night we came out to talk to voters at the blue festival to see what they thought. People were very, very split. He regrets not having left the party during the 2016 primary in order to vote for senator sanders. Generally people are very split. Take a listen. People were angry. Trump is doing a great job. In district, do you think that most people have been pretty happy or are ready for a change . I have spoke to people thats disappointed and have one set of values in mind and they seen those set of values not come to be. I think because of that, i think theyre disappointed that their vote did not turn out. Reporter so that gentleman at the end there, he says hes ready for a change and for him that change is biden. Right next to him was a friend of his who was a republican and says hes very happy with trump and that value they were discussing at the end. They had the issue on twitter. That gentleman was a dispatcher at a garbage company. He says his truck driver is happy with the situation right now. People are okay in a very calm and respectful manner disagreeing with each other. People that known each other for years, it was a cool event to go out and to talk to voters. Deceacross the board does itm like one issue rising for voters . If it is Something Like the economy, some may say it works for them and others say it does not. Right, we know we heard people, there was a ton of different issues that they cared about. Nothing at the top. You heard there. Other discussed Climate Change and for them thats about hope for the next generation. He said hes guns on the Second Amendment are important to him. I asked him, would you be okay of a moderate plan to restrict some automatic weapons and he says yes. He would be. They run the gamete of issue to them here. Savannah thank you for being out there for us. Stay tuned on snap chat. I am trying to i am not so great on snap chat. Snap chat and facebook. You are Getting Better on instagram. He instagramed things that ended right there. I am Getting Better. I am quite good at instagram. As President Trump getting ready to launch his campaign tomorrow night in florida. House democrats are speeding up their efforts to tackle election security. Nancy pelosi says her members has a package of bills theyll be voting on in the coming weeks. Sumter county, florida reportedly hacked by the russians ahead of the 2016 elections. Ke Kerry Sanders spoke with the democrats and republicans in the ruby red county. Here he is from the big Retirement Community in the country. The villages. They call it the disney land for adults. Disney land for adults. Reporter smacked down in the middle of florida in between orlando and tampa is Sumter County, one of the oldest populations and most republican places in the country. In a county of a high voter turn out. There was some evidence that it could have been hacked during the 2016 elections. According to the miami herald. Sumter giving careful answers about potential acts. Leaving the devine along party lines. Chris stanley runs the Democratic Club at the villages. When it came out. I said there is no way. Why Sumter County . It makes no sense. Now there seems to be strong evidence that Sumter County was targeted by the russians. If i were a hacker and i wanted to see if my plans going to work. I would choose a Little County that nobody would have paid attention to. So it could maybe thought to be off radar. Exactly. Everybody knows this is a red county and it is going to vote red. If you just want to see if your system worked, this is a good county to try it out on. All the voters. Ed need to know. Reporter on the other side of the villages and the other side of the isle are republicans like villagers for trump, board members. I dont think it is a secret thats taken place. I do think it happens here. Do you want to know to what extent . I think anything that undermines the general publics since security or integrity went into the system is going to hurt. According to republican governor rwandan matti ron desantis, the fbi told him hackers did not compromise my election results. Still, longterm of consequences. Four year is a small window and a snap at your fingers. Theyre looking to undermine the confidence on a longterm bases of perhaps everyon generational. Kerry sanders is joining us right now. I want to point out how amazing is the golf course at the villages . It is everywhere. It is the way everybody gets around. Sometimes you will discover that republicans and democrats will cut each other off in traffic because they know each other and it is a very political town. Oh my god. All right, help us through this hacking situation, does it seem that the democratic voters are more worried than republicans . Here is the thing. Those who are hacking could change who they are going after. Yes. Absolutely. I will say this. In broad stroke of republicans and democrats as you heard there. Republicans and democrats are both concerned about the idea that the russians are actually hacked. The republicans believe that the system is going to resolve this i dont need to know too many details. I have trust in the system where the democrats in florida are saying wait a second. Two of 67 counties in the state were hacked, which two . Why dont you tell us . And what is being done to make sure this stuff wont happen again. Republicans with a greater belief that the system will resolve this. Kerry, thank you for joining us in fort lauderdale, florida. Welcome back to velshi ruhle, russia issued a sharp warning following a new york tim times report. News of the russian networks. The times story this weekend, prompted a pair of tweets from none other than President Trump accusing the paper, the New York Times of treason in claiming the times made the story up. Again calling the times the enemy of the people. According to the times reporti reporting, they believe mr. Trump had not been briefed in any details and broad hesitation to go into detail with mr. Trump of operations against russia or concern over his reaction and the possibility that he may count count count count counter you will remember this and the Russian Ambassador of the ambassador and the foreign minister when trump were fed intelligence information and compromised methods necessary to national security. Joining us now, our u. S. Cyber command, hes the chief Security Officer at clarity. A Security Company that specializes in protecting critical infrastructure. We are so lucky that you are here. First, help us understand why put these cyber weapon into the grid and why provoke russia . There is a military interests in Holding Certain targets at risk. Russia has been extremely aggressive and for years dating back to 2012. One of the difference is again if the reporting is accurate we would be targeting what is civilian infrastructure. You have military targets but you also have civilian infrastructure. Russia energy infrastructure, their power grid is massive. We are talking about half a million substations and 500 different Power Generation facilities and 20 different independent power company. To affect that at scale is extremely difficult. What my concern is we may be losing the moral high ground here in the sense that the United States has to date and views and we have been painting russia and the agres sgressor. We cant argue they play dirty. It would hurt the argument. It sounds like the president has some plausible deniable. He is claiming he did not know about this. We know from previous recording that there has been a desire to delegate more. Can that happen that you can be u. S. Cyber forces attacking or targeting the russian grid and the president would not know about that explicitly. What we know is increasingly so the president looked to delegate more and more authority and commander in in the feel. Thats something the side commander called for and that could be a good thing. We dont want too much bureaucracy as special domain moving fast as cyber security. I have no reason to believe the New York Times is lying. They do cite some names as far as current officials. What they are not lying about is that russia is extremely active. By striking back at them and fighting cyber so to speak, are we going to deter future operations from the russians or is this going to embolden their narrative and fit right into the russian Propaganda Machine and be used as an excuse for them to increase their aggression for the United States. Fighting Traditional Land wars is that you can come to a treaty and you know who was on the other side generally speaking. You can count the missiles and see the troops. When it comes to cyber, a lot of it is not done with the label on it. How do you get to a place where you have or said the russians are and you have done it to us, we can do it to you. Why dont we stop doing it . Everybody denies they are doing it in the first place. Everyones denying it. It is not transparent. Right. You cant see the missiles. You cant message. There has been efforts to establish norms and International Levels where countries agree at the state level on certain norms and behaviors of what constitutes right and wrong. My concern of this reporting if it is true is that again we are dealing with civilian infrastructure which is off limits. Not necessarily off limits for the russians but off limits for actors in the west and the United States. Thank you for joining us. Dave weinstein. Double credit for anyone who uses here to forward a daytoday speed. Democratic president ial contender joe biden is speaking at the president ial forum in washington, d. C. Joy reid is on the left of the screen. Lets listen in. Good to see you again. My name is joe biden, today is my anniversary. And shes still with me, god love her. And i am the father of ashleys who runs for the department of justice for a long time and my son hunter. Folks, i am honor to be here today for the poors People Campaign. What you are doing makes a difference, you are picking up where it was left off for dr. King where he decided to go beyond africanamericans and across the nation. For too many years, the animati animating principle of whats happening is with great income and inequality and whats happening is the we pick against black folks against latinos and etc. But whats happening now, the reason why the poor folks are poor because of all those immigrants and all those muslims. The fact the matter is the People Campaign to end this exploitati exploitation. This is extremely than it has been because of the gigantic income. Reverend is not only that but we have less than half of the people of the United States living in poverty. It is ridiculous that we have this extreme change thats going on. Our society and policy discriminates black people and people of color and women and lbgtq individuals, i am going quick because i only have four minutes. Look, they talk about our children, these are not somebody elses children. Theyre all our children. Theyre all our children. They lift our ambitions and law. You cant say their children. Theyre americas children. We have an obligation. Every single one of us should be treated with dignity. Today is the fourth anniversary of the massacre of charleston. The reverend was a friend and he was murdered along with all those parishioners. A clear example of the poison t poisonestest ideology of white supremacis supremacists. President obama stood there and he ended his presentation with amazing grace. The amazing impact it had. I got to stay afterwards the next day. My family and i went to the regular service. I met everyone of those family members. They forgave those who did the horrible things that were done. They put an enormous pressure. It is your time. Thank you very much. Come sit on down. No, come back, sit on down. All right, reverend barber, do you have a question . Amazing when a preacher has a problem with a microphone. Let me ask you this question. The Poor Peoples Campaign is billing a movement to rule out the justice of systematic racism and poverty and devastation and militarisium militarisium. I am from the south, 13 Million People, the Southern States and along with some other states, 26 of them to be exact have all had the worse record on voters suppression. The person that gets elected by what some kourcourts are callin surgical deny womens rights and immigrant rights and lbgtq rights in ways that hurt in raw low white people that 26 million and 66 million lowering i. C. E. In this country. Heres the question. When will you go and spend significant time in the south and the sun belt to put a spotlight on issues . How will you fight to win a new electorate, poor whites, plaques, latinos, rebels and write off the south in the sun belt. Lastly, how will your campaign and administration address poverty, low wealth, healthcare, low wages in a way that undermines the myth that these issues impact small marginalized fwrups of people rather than all of us . First of all, i campaigned in the south. I plan on nominee winning north carolina, south carolina, believe it or not. I believe we can win texas and florida if you look at the polling data now. Its a marathon. Its a long way off. If you may recall i am the only one that went in and campaigned for the senator in alabama. I was the only person invited down there to speak. Not the only. But i was the only one who wasnt a person of color who was invited down. I spent a lot of time campaigning in north carolina, texas and around the country. I have no intention of walking away if im the nominee. If im not a nominee, i have no intention of walking away trying to help whoever the nominee is to win those states. Number one. Number two, as president of the United States, were i to be elected, i would make sure a number of things happen, number one, we have to bring back, you know, what happened with the Voting Rights act, as you well know, when there was this decision, Shelby County case occurred and it said that its going to eliminate the requirement of a pre, you have to get pre clearance to change anything dealing with your Voting Rights legislation, that anything that changes. The truth of the matter is, i happen to be, i thought we had made real progress. I was chairman of the judiciary committee, a ranking member. When we extended the voting act last time for 25 years. It was a fiveyear increment. I was there, did it 25 years. Its the chance that at the time that it happened, we had a unanimous vote, 980. All those southern boys and women voted for it. They went, i saw, maybe there is progress. Maybe things are beginning to change. But what i vastly underestimated was how deep and systemic the racism is and why, in fact, it never gives up. Its like cutting grass, you got to do it every week. You let it go for a month or six months or a year, you got a forest in the middle of your yard. So i would do my best to get a United States senator elected to the senate again and reinsert the Voting Rights act and overrule the shelby case as a practical matter. It would changes things dramatic atly. With regard to everything from education to the prison system, think everyone is entitled to have total healthcare. What i would do is make sure that every Single Person i could pose, every Single Person in the United States has access to medicaid right off the bat. I would triple the number of the amount of money we spent on title 1 for under privileged schools, from 15 to 45 billion a year and i would make sure that we had pre school for every, i mean 3 and 4 or 5yearold and every single state of the union. I would make sure we are in a situation where we need more social workers, more school psychiatrists, et cetera, going into those schools. Guess what happens . Its a long question, you are looking at me like want me to stop. I will just take that moment while he pauses there. We will monitor this joy reed is there asking him a question. We do want to talk about some of the other big ideas that a lot of the candidates have been putting forward. We are now nine days away from that first debate. That will be their first opportunity to set themselves apart from each other. Everybody running wants to beat donald trump everybody running wants some version of better healthcare than we got, a cleaner climate, theyre trying to be specific. Theyre all trying to figure out what is a top issue for voters . Climate scientists have been warning, rising oceans, extreme temperatures, worsening natural disasters are going to impact humans in a catastrophic way, much southeastern than we think. The World Meteorological organization released a statement based on the state of Global Climate back in 2018, showing record see levels rising exceptionally high land and ocean temperatures, over the last four years and rising Greenhouse Gas concentration levels. All that sounds confusing. It may sound confusing. Well tell you, its problematic. According to nasa, the current warming trend is significant, most likely its the result of human activity. Its an intensifying at an unprecedented rate. A new Study Suggests that thousands of americans in major cities could die from the effect of heat waves if there isnt swift action on Climate Change. Nbc news harry smith is highlighting 2020 candidates big ideas. He talked with washington governor jay ainsley, central to his campaign for tackling climb change. What is your big idea . My big idea is America Needs to defeat the current crisis. Reporter former governor and climate author jay inens lees campaign. We know its causing diseases to spread north. We are losing massive wealth and benefits because of it. We met governor inslee at a Des Moines Community college. You know this provides a lot of power here. About 30 mrs. Plus, iowa, its incredible. As president , inslee would use power to restore environment am regulations from the Obama Administration that President Trump ended. Inslee wants to have all cars and trucks to be electric by 2030. There are only a million electric cars on the roads in the United States. We sell 17 to 20 million a year. And in 1940, there were only 70 jeeps made in the United States. And within four years, weve made 640,000 jeeps. What if even some of your goals are not achieved in say the next decade . Well, if we do not in the next administration make this job one, we are going to be in for a world of hurt. But my time is up. I want to be able to look my grandkids in the eye and say i did everything i could to prevent the Climate Crisis from degrading their lives. Defeating the Climate Crisis. Thats jay inslees big idea. Harry smith, nbc news, iowa. Lucky us, joining us now, nbc news correspondent harry smith, himself harry, welcome. A new nbc news poll found that the third most important issue for democratic voters in 2020 is Climate Change. Governor inslee wants to make it number 1 and then when you get yourself down to republicans, its a much lesser priority. Right. Can he use this to get himself to the top seat . He sure has devoted a good portion of his life to this. And you hear him talk. He speaks about these issues in a very informed way. In a very passionate way. Personal way. From a personal way. Especially, when you think about how serious it actually is, lots of other issues swimming around out there. He is the one with the clarion call like no more than the green if you deal, weve got to act now. Do this quickly, or else. So is there a problem in the back that all the other candidates accept the reamiowe reality that reality that this is important . Others say healthcare is more important. You have to beat donald trump on a Climate Change message because a number of republicans dont think this is crucial . From some ways. Its also interesting, because this is such a long run. Right . Here we are in june. Caucus will not happen until there is snow on the ground, after the 1st of the year. So a lot of this will be about the retail. I think its been interesting to watch who has been out. Who has been working hard. Think about elizabeth warren, who people are how could she probably e possibly have a chance all those months ago. She has been out there day after day, day after day, issue after issue after issue. This is a long play. Right. As some candidates polls erode, others begin to rise. Thank you for seeing you. You can hear more of governor inslees big idea at my big idea. Watch these, it will give an idea of why these candidates are different harry will talk about corey booker tonight on nightly news on leicester holt. Thank you for watching velshi ruehle.
