good evening everyone, thanks for joining us. i'm adam may. the powerful system uprooted trees in carol county and tonight many families are cleaning up. our extensive coverage begins with carol lynne tonight. that's where the storm has killed more than 20 people. >> reporter: this time lapse video shows storms descending on raleigh. one of the hardest hit areas were pertige county where only a couple 100 people live. tornadoes tore houses from their foundation, picked up cars and left only foundations. >> i saw this twister coming. it was just twisting. i told my wife, hit the bathroom. as soon as we hit the bathroom floor, the whole roof just flew. >> reporter: laguedy had prayers of her own when she could not reach her inlaws. >> i had a gut feeling when i could not reach them. i know how close they were to where it hit. >> reporter: the door, the entire home was gone. the tornado killed her inlaws. the storm hit her home and threw them into the floor. she was visiting the couple who had just come home early from their weekend house. it even demolished by box stores like this lowe's. no one was killed here, thanks to the manager who corralled people to the back of the store. >> as soon as we hit the back of the store, everything started blowing. >> it just felt like the whole world had been sucked up in front of you. >> reporter: the governor declared a state of emergency last night. >> some incredible damage there. our coverage continues now with meteorologist bernadette woods. she is tracking warnings that are still in effect throughout maryland tonight. >> you already heard that the part that the the national weather service is investigating two tornadoes in the area. conowingo got 2.10-inches of rain. fredrick 1.83. we had numerous warnings and you see they line the river. we still have to press those these are going to be in effect for a while. things will start to settle down along the patomic. they are above their crest and they have not started to decline just yet. those showers are adding to the already flooded situations. we'll have more coming up. >> thanks, bernadette. a power outage at the water treatment center caused 20,000- gallons of water to overflow. there are reports of possible tornadoes that is under investigation. we're going to check in as soon as they are available later on in this newscast. for constant forecast updates and live doppler radar you can log on at any time. major changes for air traffic controllers after a string of them fell asleep on the job. starting today, the government will force air traffic controllers to take mandated breaks. and also another bill to have air controllers to take sleeping breaks is also in the works. tonight police are searching for a suspect in that case. well if you drive the beltway late at night get ready for some big traffic delays. starts tonight at 11:00 westbound 695 will shut down at charles street. the traffic will be rerouted off the exit. then back on to the freeway from 11:00 to 6:00 in the morning on sunday through thursday. this detour will last about three weeks while construction crews install some beams for a new charles street bridge. after much debate and construction. one baltimore building is now a historic landmark. gigi barnett explains that the decision is still causing controversy between activists and city leaders. >> reporter: abandoned and say cant for year, the old -- and vacant for years, the old the áf drugstore was given a landmark designation. but the construction project designed to revitalize the area near lexington and howard street, also known as the superblock. that means reeds is safe for now. >> the next step would be to make it permanent. >> reporter: that's what helna smith wants. she's one of the college students that put together a sit out more than six decades ago. >> if you go any place in the world you go and you look at its history. dc, annapolis, any place that you go, you have america's diner is always open. a heartbreaking tragedy in ohio, a father calls 911 and admits he killed his family. >> there's been a terrible accident at my house. my wife and three children are dead. >> okay, what happened? >> a gunshot wound. >> okay. >> and i'm getting ready to kill myself right now. >> well when police arrived at the home, alan and don atwater and his three children all under the age of four were found dead in a murder suicide. the incident is under investigation. watch here as the driver of the black car takes off from the gas station after filling up without paying. a 50-year-old attendant holds on to the vehicle. it's actually draped right into oncoming traffic. he only suffered minor injuries. police now are looking for the driver of that car. dozens of crews are trying to reach a man who's trapped underground. a digging machine was brought in to try to help the miner. the university of maryland in baltimore county is making a name in the racing world. tim williams explains the school's off road race car is now competing on the world's stage. it's not your typical classroom. >> reporter: but here at the university of maryland baltimore county technology is moving at an accelerated pace. >> a lot of things in the classroom. sometimes a teacher will explain a concept that seems a little bit obtuse. you don't know what you're talking about. but you come down here and understand how to design stuff. >> reporter: baha is a collegiate design competition with 140 international college teams competing in several events. each must economically design and race cars. >> 100% of the components are designed by team members. >> reporter: that race is in bermingham alabama and is sponsored by ssc. umbc's racing team claimed top honors for a performance in three events. this year with modification, they expect to gain top honors again this year. tim williams, wjz eyewitness news. and that team placed second in the cost event with the least expensive entry in the competition. the final scores are still being tallied. today is palm sunday, and christians all across the world are celebrating. it's we want to go back to our expanded weather coverage. the national weather service is in maryland, they are trying to confirm if a tornado touched down last night. our coverage continues with weijia jiang. what does it look like out there and what's the latest? >> reporter: adam, what you see behind me is pretty typical for this area. a massive tree uprooted and landed on top of a barn. the father family who lives here says it was one of the trees uprooted. other families were not so lucky. thunderstorms were uprooted saturday cutting coverage to hundreds. >> we have 250-pound, 300-pound furniture that was lifted up off our deck and placed in the pool. >> reporter: the weather service is investigating whether a tornado touched down. >> you take everything you can from the ground. any eyewitness reports that might be here. information from the radar back at the forecast office. and you put all that together and you really try to figure out what was the most likely scenario that caused this. carol county authorities say one family is displaced after a tree fell on top of their home in manchester. in other areas across the state from bells point to annapolis. it was flooding that took over. some say it's the worse storm they've seen in a decade. >> this was the worse i've seen it since isabel. sometimes it crests in, but not this far in. >> reporter: so the family who lives in that badly destroyed house was home at the time that tree fell over. but they were not injured, no injuries or fatalities were reported. whether if it was a tornado, investigators say they should know that in the next couple of days. weijia jiang, wjz news. and we're going to keep you updated with that information from the national weather service. and our meteorologist bernadette woods has been following that investigation. what do they look at. >> they like to see what the construction of the house was. because you know some houses aren't made as strongly as others. so damage may look more severe. however that's one of the things they look at is the construction of the house or the structure that was damaged. and they look for rotation. wind damage is wind damage. but four tornadoes has to have rotation. they look at the pattern at the top of the trees if they're twisted. usually a good indication. i didn't see any there that doesn't mean there wasn't one. but if it has all the insulation. >> don't they look at the way the degree kind of falls and whether it spears into objects. >> because if it can go in a rotating condition from different directions. that's a sign that there was rotation rather all going in one direction. >> that was a wild system we had go through here last night. >> incredibly severe weather. that is calming down some. the winds are still high but they are starting to calm down. we do still have winds out of the southwest. but the wind advisory will expire at 6:00 tonight. we'll have your furl forecast when we come back after this break. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,, welcome back everybody. this is how it looks outside right now. we have had sunshine return to the area. but a couple of clouds starting to move in this afternoon. so we're going to move it to live doppler radar and show you there have been a few showers coming out of the northwest. nothing huge out of this. nothing like yesterday. they are fizzling out the further west you go. you may get a few showers out of this, that is about it. let me show you what else we've been dealing with during these afternoon hours. most of the rain has come to an end. but all along the different rivers, it is going to take some time for all of the streams to feed into the river and then all of that to work its way out into the bay. so a lot of these different areas are cresting above flood stage right now and until various times these flood warnings will be in effect. also we have a wind advisory in effect until 8:00 tonight for the winds that have been up this afternoon. generally out of the southwest at 15 to 25 miles per hour. with gusts higher than that. although they are already starting to back off. we see numerous wind gusts up to 45 miles per hour. the high is 35 miles per hour in oakland. now as far as temperatures go, 66 is where we sit right now in baltimore. a lot of 60s out there. 50s farther west. that is our high for today. just above 65 degrees. we're going above the average in the next few days as the next system comes in here. it will be gone by tomorrow but as it does the next one moves our way. as that happens we're doing to see the -- we're going to start to see the clouds increase. small craft advisory through tonight. the forecasts looks like this fortonight. we're going down to 43 degrees. the winds start to die down. we're looking at sunshine and increasing high clouds through tonight. 68 for our high. there is the slightest chance for showers as a warm front comes our way. then on tuesday, there is a chance for a few showers and clouds around. then we sort of pump up that warm air on wednesday and get some sunshine before the cold front part of the storm comes through. when it does we start to drop once again. 68 on thursday. tpráeud we're look --
