ball of metal. >> the crash happened around 9:35 this morning near exit 68, near mannerville, long island. five people are recovering at stoneybrook hospital. andrew siff with the information. >> reporter: natalie, this one is just awful. in fact, as you'll hear in a moment, firefighters, paramedics describing to doctors that this is one of the worst crashes they've ever seen. police investigators speed as the cause of a crash with tragic consequences. it happened just after 9:30 this morning on the long island expressway. the driver of a sub arue outback went flying across the grassy median, into the path of two cars heading west. the resulting crash killed three people and shocked even the firefighters who raced to the scene. >> reporter: trauma chief said five patients got sent here to stoneybrook. sources tell news 4, two are children. the injured rage from serious to critical and four trauma surgeons spent hours trying to save them. >>. >> when with do get multiple victims like this, we mobilize all our resources. >> reporter: suffolk county police are invette gating initial reports the subaru was speeding. the w four people and a honda with three people. >> we believe speed might have been a factor of the vehicle that crossed bound eastbound over. for whatever reason that vehicle lost control, went into the grassy median and went airborne into the westbound lanes. >> reporter: one factor that seems to be off the table is weather. >> that's what makes it more tragic because the driving conditions this morning were superb. it was a sunday morning. this really caught a lot of hour, the suffolk county police department released the names of those who lost their lives in this terrible crash. 26-year-old carmelo pinales, his sister, patricia of westbury, and scott martella, the communication executive for steve bellone and before that he worked for new york governor andrew cuomo. the governor and county executive bellone called him dedicated, hard working, beloved. a tragedy felt by all, especially out here on long island. so many tragic components to this story as the facts begin to roll in. andrew siff, news 4 new york. >> thank you. the murder of a 9-year-old girl in queens is taking another twist as the girl's step mom is behind bars, another person is being charged. strangling her stepdaughter poor. she was found holed up in a home with her ex-husband. police are looking for the gunman who fired a stray bullet that killed a grandmother in harlem. edesta simms was playing dominos at her apartment. investigators are still trying to determine why someone open fire, hitting simms in the neck. she was pronounced dead at covering the table where she was shot. >> she was a wonderful mother. >> everybody knows ms. odesta. she's the best. why you do that? >> police say two men were shot in the legs a few blocks away from where simms was shot. investigators trying to determine if the shootings are connected. more than a dozen people are recovering from gunshot wound in turned violent. we're joined now by rana from bridgeport. >> reporter: neighbors and police describe complete chaos. the party was going on at the end of this driveway. you can see detectives are there now gathering evidence. more than 100 people at that party. there was a deejay playing loud music when two gunman started firing at them from behind these hedges. in all, 13 people were shot. those gunmen are still on the run. blood stains mark the unexpected it's on shoes, glasses, even the deejay table left behind at a bridgeport duplex. >> i was laying down because of the music and everything. >> reporter: next door hector torres says he could hear the party and then gunshots. >> one of of them knock on my door. i came down and i look outside and there was somebody laying down. >> reporter: 13 people shot, one looking for the gunmen who shot through the bushes. >> it was very dark back there. right now we don't have any witnesses who came forward saying they saw the shooters. >> reporter: police say the party host asked for a permit for the party but it was denied. >> it was denied because they were selling -- they wanted to sell alcohol and charge for the party, so we frown upon that and we do not allow parties to go on. >> reporter: of the 13 victims, most have been hospital, but one is still fighting for her life. >> she came literally within millimeters of death. >> reporter: back live here at the scene where you can see detectives here, they have been here for a half hour gathering more evidence. that shooting happened around 1:30 this morning. police say they'll step up patrols for tonight in this neighborhood and they hope someone comes forward with information. reporting live in bridgeport, deadly new jersey bus transit. er ma garcia says her mother, jessie, was loving, hard working and a loving grandmother to her three children. she was killed friday in newark when another bus ran a red light and t-boned it. when her door bell rang, it >> i want to see the kids. and then she never game. >> she was on her way to work as an assembly line leader at a factory when that crash happened. joseph bartella, the driver the other bus, also killed. we'll go down to the rain moving in. >> you can see the rain already moving into the tri-state area. there might be another line not a lot of thunderstorm activity with this. you can see the lightning strikes to the south but there is one cell in particular that's putting down some pretty heavy rain. i wanted to give you a view of that. it's moving to the north and east at 25 miles an hour. about to move into yonkers, greenburg, and this cell in new jersey is putting down hefty rainfall, 2 inches per hour throughout this stripe of red and orange here. that is in sussex county. high tempere 86 in central park. 888 in morristown. we'll see temperatures sliding down into the 70s throughout the entire tri-state as we head through sunday that reports of a shooting at kennedy airport turned out to be nothing more than a panic attack. today senator chuck schumer called on the department of homeland security to open a formal investigation into what happened there and how to prevent this in the future. schumer says there needs to be better coordination between the various agencies responsible for airport security. he also said poor communication >> why did tsa agents abandon posts and yell things like bomb and someone's been shot? why were the video camera feeds that were available to the airlines not immediately made available to our law enforcement authorities? >> now, schumer also cited a problem exposed by news 4's airport security. take a look at the window behind us. big, fat raindrops out there in midtown manhattan. >> the rain is going to continue to move through as we head through the evening hours. another line of rain and storms is possible before midnight. then once we get past that, it's going to turn breezy. we'll clear out very, very quickly and a very refreshing change on the way. on monday. you're really going to enjoy it, i think. hopewell junction at 77 it's 78 in central park dropping down from the high of 86 we reached today. look at the cooler air, rain-cooled air, 72 in sussex right now but 78 in long branch. on satellite and radar you can see that first initial line moving through. the heavy thunderstorms are primarily over the delmarva pennsylvania in southern new jersey. another line moving through the great lake states could hold together. future tracker believes it will. i believe we'll see another have much dryer, cooler air behind this line. that will provide us with enough instability. look at this at midnight, raining heavily over long island. we can't rule that out happening overnight. if you plan on getting out on the road after the sun sets tonight, make sure you're mindful that it's harder to see, flooded roadways once the sun goes down. you want to turn around and find a different route. if you encounter a roadway that's completely covered in water. then once that line moves out, the wind gust pick up. by the t 234 miles an hour in new york. 22 in asbury park. we could see winds gusting to around 30 miles per hour once you get into some passes in the higher elevations. by tuesday morning, the winds are settling down. tuesday looks like the
