severe thunderstorm warning for areas across northern hampshire county and eastern virginia and northwestern mineral county doppler indicated a severe storm pushing its way through there with strong wind. along the i-95 corridor a lot of heavy rainfall as well. we still have a flash flood watch in effect until 11 p.m. and although some of you didn't see much rain today and many of you did, we're not out of the clear. we're still anticipating storms and rain moving in tonight because there's a lot more well out to our west. it's 82 degrees right now at national, 85 dulles, 95 at baltimore. here's a look at some of the areas did that receive a fair amount of rain. it's not over yet. the death toll now stands at five after staging at the indiana state fair collapsed in a huge gust of wind. the crowd there waiting to see the country super group sugarland. a gust up to 70 miles per hour brought down the stage sending all of that metal and lighting right on top of the crowd in front. today indiana governor mitch daniels says while he is heartbroken by the tragedy he's proud of what citizens did in the face of disaster. here's more. >> the individual who ran to the truck, not from but also people who simply pitched in. >> governor daniels says the wind gust was a freak thing that couldn't have been predicted or prevented, but we wondered how do fairgrounds handle threats of bad weather to keep you safe? we go to the montgomery county fairgrounds in maryland to find out. >> reporter: a horrific youtube video captures a fun night turning into a nightmare. >> we looked to the left and you could see the dust rolling in. about the time i turned my head back to the stage the cover on top of the stage started falling and it took about five seconds and it was down. it was down. people just freaked. >> reporter: the ferocious winds that ripped through the indiana state fair saturday night came in a split second and had fairs from around the country reevaluating their safety procedures. the month of august is one of the busiest times of the year for fairs in our area and organizers that plan for fairs like in montgomery county do everything they can to prevent an accident like the one in indiana. >> through every moment of fair operations we have folks monitoring the weather. the fire department monitors our weather patterns as well as the police department to ensure that the weather patterns around the fair are not compromising generally speaking in the summertime, the patterns moving very quickly in and out, so we're very vigilant to make sure we see these things before they happen and as they happen and respond appropriately. >> reporter: the montgomery county fair does not have the stage setup like in indiana, but fairgoers are noticing the methods that are in place to keep visitors safe. >> it seems really safe. i mean everything is strapped down. i have a lot of faith that the state and county inspect it. >> i think the most tedious part is being consistent and persistent. safety is nonnegotiable. >> reporter: indiana state fair staff had received a warning about the oncoming storms and were working on evacuation plans. unfortunately the storm hit sooner than expected. paul rafael, fox 5 news. >> paul just mentioned warning. we understand the national weather service predicted a storm would hit the indiana fair grounds about 9:15. that's 25 minutes after the gust that took down the stage. i'm going to be ending my campaign for president, but i'm very grateful for the people of iowa, the people of this country who i had a chance to make my case to and for my supporters and staff and friends who have been so loyal and helpful. >> tim pawlenty's surprise announcement came this morning after a distant third place finish in the iowa straw poll. he viewed iowa as a must win state after laying the groundwork for a presidential campaign nearly two years ago. the former governor says he would have made a good president, but voters apparently are looking for something different. making that something different is michele bachmann? fresh off her win in iowa the minnesota congresswoman made the rounds on the sunday talk shows touting her victory as a sign voters are ready for something new. she believes she has what it takes to beat president obama. >> people want us to get our house in order financially. it's not happening. they want someone who is going to stand up and do what they say and say what they mean and that's what i've been doing in washington. they really sent a signal yesterday in a strong message to washington that they want someone who is going to fight for them. >> the straw poll is nonbinding and it involves about 17,000 voters this year. it generally does not predict a nominee but is usually a good indicator how well a candidate is organized and how much financial power they have. top democrats didn't waste any time knocking the entire field of gop candidates. dnc chairperson debbie wasserman schultz saying president obama didn't have much to worry about and none of the gop candidates have impressed her so far in her opinion. here's more. >> his numbers are so strong, he still has widespread support. if anyone is in trouble it's the republican party. right now they have a collection of candidates for president who are busy out trying to outright wing each other, essentially all so similar that they might as well be legos they're that interchangeable. >> president obama kicks off a bus tour tomorrow covering some of the same areas his potential opponents are visiting, minnesota, iowa and illinois. turning now to a developing story involving a local man kidnapped in pakistan, we received this photo from his co- worker. warren weinstein is a development expert who works with an arlington-based development contractor called j.e. austin associates. tonight the search for clues have turned up no leads, but authorities are questioning guards and other staff who were inside his house in pakistan where he was abducted. did the kidnappers get some inside help? we'll hear now about the investigation. >> reporter: the fbi is believed to be looking into the case, as it usually does when u.s. citizens are abduct overseas. while kidnappings are commonplace for foreigners in pakistan, abductions in this style are actually quite rare. in the early hours of saturday morning ad of as many as eight gunmen appeared at weinstein's house which he uses as an office. they tricked his guards into letting them in by saying they had food as a gift for the holy month of ramadan. they were hand tied, blindfolded and their mouths taped while they were taken up to weinstein's bedroom. no group has claimed responsibility. no one has claimed ransome. there are active anti-american gripes there but they were wearing western style shirts and trousers and it's not believed that is who had taken him. warren weinstein is from maryland and had been living here seven years and was expected to relocate home tomorrow monday and police believe it could be an inside job with people having prior knowledge to his movement. his 25 staff are being investigated. their phone records are being checked but police have no definitive leads so far. a lawyer for a gaithersburg man suspected by aruban officials in the disappearance of this woman in bethesda was where she lived says he should be allowed to leave the island. michael lopez, his island lawyer, represents gary giordano. he was vacations with robyn gardner when she vanished august 2nd. lopez says giordano has fully cooperated with investigators and there's no evidence against him, but prosecutors are planning to ask authorities to hold him at least eight more days when they go to court tomorrow. the struggle for change in syria is being met with overwhelming force tonight. how things are spiraling towards deadly results. plus a man 100 feet in the air in a standoff with police. see him dangling there? they're trying to get him down and it's happening right now. we'll take you to the scene as we continue here on the 6. a standoff between police and main who managed to climb up a tv tower in tulsa and he's been up there now for four days. police don't know why he climbed up there 100 feet or so, but they do know he suffers from mental illness. the man has refused all attempts to come down. philadelphia's mayor ordered a curfew crackdown after several violent flash mobs went on the attack. in the first night under the new rules philadelphia police say they picked up about 50 teens. the city hosted events to help keep the teens off the streets and the mayor thinks it's working. >> i guess like 50 people out of, you know, a couple hundred thousand who apparently either didn't get the message or maybe for some reason then the didn't take it seriously. we're as serious as a heart attack. if your child is out after curfew, tall, short, nice, not so nice, the curfew is the curfew is the curfew. buy a watch. >> here's the curfew. it bans teens under 18 years old from being in center city and university city after 9:00 at night. the fighting in syria is getting more deadly tonight. anti-government protests have been met today with brutal retaliation from government forces. we'll here what's happening. >> reporter: the syrian president seems to have taken a page from his father's playbook and rather than negotiate with protesters or arrest them, the regime is finding it easier to just destroy entire cities that are in revolt. today the death toll was about two dozen, but in reality that number could be a lot higher because syrians, even those not protesting, are scared to death of going to government run hospitals because often rather than being treated by doctors, they're met by government thugs who arrest them, thor tour them and then often kill them. steaming through the blue water of the mediterranean this syrian naval gunship made quite a statement to the people of latia. reports say it blasted away at the protesters' main strong hold, the supported tanks that had moved into the city. it sounds much more like a war zone than any type of civil disobedience. protesters often assemble in the mosques. loud speakers call out for change. assad forces pounding away until they were silenced. the navy shelling today marks an escalation by rat jeep but also perhaps a little bit of desparation -- the ra veep, but also perhaps a little bit of desparation -- regime, but also perhaps a little bit of desparation. a base is scheduled to be completed sometime next year for assad, but the syrians are getting hit by the other side as repulsion is growing and traditionally friendly arab governments are dressing them down for their brutal up. >> we do over areas of the northwest starting to get warnings and all of that is heading right towards the east. so we have to keep a close eye on it. let's have a look outside, some of you seeing blue skies, but some of you dealing with some wet what cross our region. today there were many areas that really didn't see anything, but then there were a lot of areas that certainly did. so with the sunshine that's helping make the atmosphere a little bit unstable. as the evening progresses and the storms move closer to us, we'll have to keep an eye out for potentially severe weather. in the meantime here's a look at some of the totals over the past 24 to 31 hours across our neighborhoods. prince george's county 2.19 inches of rainfall, almost 3 inches for charles county, montgomery a little bit over 3/4-inch so far for the storm totals and these are just buzzing right along here for you. i'm going to reset this so you can see it a little bit better. this is actually the yellow are the areas where we currently have our warnings right now and those warnings are in effect right through until 7:00 tonight. that's what we're talking about, 7:00 tonight in terms of those warnings for you. they are going to continue through for mineral, allegheny as well as new hampshire and morgan county to our far northwest. getting it back up for you now, i on a palagis. but here to the north -- i apologize, but here to the northwest is where we currently have those storms heading towards us moving in during tonight. i want to tell you this has a lot of heavy rainfall. a closer look, these storms actually even have hail in them. so they're fairly strong and as we move into this warm sunny atmosphere we have becoming very unstable, over here where we don't see anything happening, that's 0 we have to watch very closely don't -- what we have to watch very closely tonight. these also have pockets of very heavy rainfall in them. here's our 3d live sentinel radar. you can see the storm tops of these as they push their way towards us. a lot dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning in these as well. you do have to be careful and that severe thunderstorm warning? effect right through until 7:00 tonight -- is in effect right through until 7:00 tonight. we have a flash flood watch until 11:00 tonight. the potential for us seeing our streams and creeks rising well above where they should be is very real. temperatures today 85 degrees at national, 88 dulles, 80 degrees at baltimore. it's pretty muggy outside right now and down right uncomfortable with all the moisture in the atmosphere, 84 national airport, 82 fredericksburg, 82 winchester, 82 degrees at hagerstown, 80 at baltimore, up the mid-atlantic 74 boston, new york only at 68 degrees. as this frontal system pushes its way east into the course of tomorrow, on the backside we're still looking at storms starting out your monday, could see a stray one early tuesday, but this ridge of high pressure builds in behind it and by tuesday, wednesday we start to clear out and get back to some drier conditions and some sunshine at least. so that's not all bad. here's a look at the widespread rain as it moves its way from the east. this it is what we're talking about well, well out to the west we'll still be dealing with those storms. let's look at the five-day forecast and we are talking about again a chance of storms moving into monday, stray chance tuesday. wednesday we get some sunshine back. thursday into friday the next system hits our way, but i really want you to pay attention to what's happening tonight because some of those storms could really blow off with some gusting and damaging winds. >> anything severe we'll break into programming and another update tonight at 10:00. school is right around the corner as you know and it's time to stock up on supply and clothes. maryland's tax free week begins today. you pay no sales tax on clothing or anything that costs less than about $100 this week. sales tax in maryland is usually 6%. tax free week runs through next saturday, the 20th. for decades a few rockville high schools remained segregated. the nation has since turned a corner seoul rights as you know and a few hundred students noted the changes at a class reunion. fox 5's karen gray houston takes a closer look. >> reporter: inside the baptist church they're saving souls. outside are relics of the past. this bell at no. 595 stone street avenue is a reminder of the building's history. from 1935 to '51 this was lincoln high, one of three montgomery county high schools for queen, seen here in this 1956 year book. these aging graduates followed the high school. this book chronicles how negro students were treated differently from whites, but the memories were not all bad. >> we had qualified, very competent teachers. everybody had a degree, at least a bachelor's. some had masters degrees. >> reporter: the focus on segregated schools in rockville comes when there's a lot of buzz about a new movie, the help written by a white author about black maids in the segregated south. >> i'm just wondering exactly how much insight she would have into what life was like for us. >> reporter: segregation was all they knew then, but for these alumni here now this is all about nostalgia. >> when i was the next to last one to graduate because back then we did it by height. so speaker at today's reunion. coming up in sports the redskins were back on the practice field after friday night's preseason win. lindsay murphy is up next with all the news from redskins park including an update on the health of quarterback john beck. stay with us.  good afternoon. i'm lindsay murphy. after a day of rest the redskins return to the practice field today and some of the usual stuff, sitting out again including malcomb kelly, brandon banks, ryan torain who will visit a hand specialist tomorrow and chris cooley. mike shanahan said they don't know if cooley will be ready by september 11th for the season opener. john beck appeared to be full go for the first time in nearly a week. he missed parts of practice this last week after tweaking his groin and he did not play in friday's preseason opener. beck did participate in the 11- on-11 drills and said he felt pretty good afterwards. mike shanahan didn't think he was bothered by the groin either. beck does expect to play friday against the colts, but there has been no announcement as it to who the starter will be -- as to who the starter will be. >> the trainers were asking me hey, you know, like are you good? are you thinking about it? i feel good about it right now. coach shanahan was doing the same thing during practice, just wanted to make sure you're doing all right because we tried to be as smart as we could last week because you want to play. >> it's good to be back. a couple days last week i wasn't able to take a lot of team rest. it wasn't fun. so it's good to be back out practicing doing the full 11-on- 11. in other redskins news third most accurate kicker in nfl is now history with the redskins. the team has parted ways with shayne graham just two days after he missed both of his field goal attempt in the preseason opener. the redskins haven't decided if they will bring in another veteran or battle with gano. last night donovan mcnabb made his preseason debut with the vikings taking on the titans and completing four of his first five throws. overall donovan played two series throwing for 40 yards to complete six of 11 passes including three to convert 3rd downs. after the game mcnabb said, "it felt good. i thought we had a great flow with the offense." the vikings fell to the titans 14-3. the nationals lost to mother nature today, their game in philly postponed by rain. makeup date is september 20th at 1:05. the nationals have off tomorrow before starting a series at home with the reds on tuesday. today's scheduled starter will pitch them. buck showalter and the orioles able to play looking to avoid a sweep by the tigers. nick markakis gets the inning going early and hits the big fly off doug fister. that was just getting out of the park, his 12th home run of
