trooper wesley brown was shot dead just after 12:30 this morning just outside the front door of the applebee's on donnelle drive in forrestville. investigators say at least seven shots were fired. >> he was shot in the upper body. he was wearing a vest and the bullet missed his vest and hit his -- basically hit his heart. >> reporter: wesley brown was a four-year veteran ever the maryland state police force, born and raised in seat pleasant, recently engaged to be married. witnesses say after being shot, brown stumbled back into the restaurant and died in the arms of its other security guard, a retired maryland state police trooper good the senseless killing of trooper brown hurts all of us deeply and our objective is to go ahead and try and find this person that killed our trooper. >> reporter: investigators say they're looking for this man in the light blue shirt seen here in images from surveillance video taken inside the restaurant. he's a crowning man who was kicked out of the applebee's about a half-hour before the shooting. they say he was a patron who had become unruly after refusing to pay his bill. police say trooper brown was shot after stepping outside the restaurant to use his cell phone. >> this person is dangerous. anybody that would take a shot and kill an armed police officer, a guardian of society, will have no questions or qawms about harming -- or qualms about harming anybody else who gets in his way. >> reporter: the person of interest is seen wearing glasses. he's small in stature, with short hair and wearing a hugo boss shirt. >> we have to focus our energies on this investigation, on identifying the suspect, and bringing this person to justice. >> reporter: before dawn brown's body was taken to the medical examiner's office in baltimore. officials say he was planning to take members of a youth group he founded on a field trip to new york city today. now police sources tell us investigators are looking for their person of interest in nearby apartment communities and also in the district tonight. so far he has not been found, shawn. >> it's a tragedy. bob barnard, thank you. let's check in with fox 5's wisdom martin live outside trooper brown's home in capitol heights. wisdom, how are his family and friends coping tonight? >> reporter: all night long people have been coming here to the home to deal with their satness and express their condolences to the family members. we've been talking to a lot of people here tonight. everyone we spoke to has a story about how this one manmade such a huge impact on this community. tonight his mother, brother, sisters were all here, very emotional about whammed. they were -- what happened. they were surrounded by family members and other people in the community who say this manmade this big difference in his life and well as the lives of others. he's known also for having a number of events here in the neighborhood, especially for kids. you're looking now at some video that was shot back in april of brown at a neighborhood cookout. he's wearing a white t-shirt and sunglasses. he's smiling in this video and interacting with the people in the video. that's the kind of person they say he was. tonight his friends talked to me about what kind of man he was and what he meant to this faked. -- what he meant to this neighborhood. >> everybody going to be hurting in the community. but we're going to recover. got to stay strong. the kids he was working w they was strong -- working with, they was strong. he made them strong. he was like a father figure. >> there are no words to describe what he was, who he was and what he did. he touched so many lives in so short of a time. you can't count it. i just wish i could touch, you know, at least one-quarter of the people that he touched. >> reporter: in a final note, trooper brown's fiance is set to become a police officer. he was also set to be married next year. >> thank you. >> our coverage of the woman, they found five children in her car ranging in age from 9 to 13 years old. the kids were released to a family friend unharmed. she's now being held on $15,000 bond. the hunt is on in maryland tonight for a peeping tom. montgomery county police say they've had several reports of a man peeping into apartments in north bethesda. fox 5's roz plater has the news edge on this one. >> reporter: first floor windows, sliding glass doors, even a balcony, all places montgomery county police say a peeping tom has been spotted. five times since late april, all in north bethesda. >> it's pretty crazy, especially in this area. you live in bethesda, rockville to get into a safer neighborhood. >> reporter: investigators say the peeper sometimes dressed in a shirt and tie seems to be targeting apartment buildings late at night and early in the morning striking twice on both marinelli road and edson lane and once on montrose avenue. >> i hope they find him for the safety of the neighborhood. >> reporter: he even struck in a gated community where security cameras are clearly visible. neighbors tell us their building has posted warnings and they've seen more police patrols good i just feel like the police, they would drive through the community a couple of times and that was a surprise. >> he's getting bold. that means that it's reaching a point where it's getting a little serious where the authorities have to pay attention to it. >> reporter: he may be using some sort of camera. one ever the witnesses was getting undressed when she noticed a small red light through her bedroom occur continue. then saw a man standing next to her window. her neighbors say they're on alert for anyone suspicious. >> it's just a matter of keeping your eyes open and seeing anything that's different and anyone that you don't recognize. >> reporter: police are asking you if you spot someone, don't hesitate to call 911. it could give them their best chance of catching him. >> that's usually how we will catch someone is great citizens being vigilant and looking around their neighborhoods, keeping an eye out and giving us a cal. >> reporter: i'm roz plater, fox 5 news. the news edge on maryland now. a montgomery county police officer has been found not guilty of perjury and misconduct. officer dina hoffman was indicted after testimony in a dui case was contradicted by surveillance video she didn't know existed. officer hoffman claims her mistakes were the result of a bad memory. the dui trial took place a year after the arrest. now to a developing story in arkansas. rescuers have stopped searching for the night. they are looking for dozens of people missing in flash flooding. at least 16 people were killed in flood waters as they rose through a campground. maureen umeh is live with an update. >> reporter: the flood waters came fast with little warning rising as swiftly as 8 feet an hour. at least 40 people are still missing in the flash flooding at a recreation area near caddo pike. it poured through the valley with such force t peeled asphalt off roads and bark off trees. the state's governor doubts anyone saw the early morning flood coming. rescue crews spent the day in canoes and kayaks looking for bodies and survivors. so far 60 people have been rescued and at least two dozen hospitalized but many more are feared dead. campers who survived say they are lucky. >> around 4:00 a.m. my mom woke me up and said pack your stuff. the water is like right outside the cabin. i didn't believe her at first. so i looked out and the water was right next to the car. it started rising really quickly. we grabbed everything we could and came down here. >> i just can't believe it. it's so surreal that we all got out, my family, my cousin's little boy was missing but they found him. they had to tear the tents apart to get him out and everything. >> tonight family members and first responders are holding a candlelight vigil for the victims. president obama and the first lady offered their condolences and also issued a statement saying fema would help with the state and local response. in the newsroom, maureen umeh, fox 5 news. >> thank you. president obama meantime will spend part of his weekend doing damage control in the wake of the massive bp oil spill. the president will call new british prime minister david cameron tomorrow to talk about the spill. the u.k. has criticized the white house about its treatment of the british oil giant. mr. obama is also scheduled to sit down with top bp executives at the white house next week. it will be the first time he's spoken to them directly. >> the president in the fairs 50 days -- first 50 days of this ordeal never spoke to the c.e.o. of british petroleum i believe is very telling. >> i think everybody thought it was an appropriate time to sit down and talk about the issues and that's what we're going to do. >> president obama is also gearing up for his fourth trip to the gulf region since the april to experience negative emotional states and men who are extoe verted -- extroverted are likely to have a higher number of children. working moms could be contributing to the rise in childhood obesity. researchers studied 8500 kids and found more than half were obese. the one common factor? their moms worked full-time. researchers believe working moms may prepare fewer family meals and possibly less healthy meals because of time constraints. number three, twitter is responding to several service crashes this week. on a service blog twitter claims that networking equipment is responsible for the problem. today the site posted that it was seeing a higher increase in errors and is now working on the problem. number two it may get a lot easier to get out of metro's 22 parking lots. a metro test the toilets. that's where all the students you saw came in. they volunteered. they walked around the complex flushing the urinals and the toilets. >> the standard flush. >> we practiced before we came. >> practiced flushing. well good. in all 386 toilets were flushed simultaneously. the massive flush is a requirement for all new buildings. the task allows crews to calibrate the pumps. same tabluous flushing. >> i wish i had something witty to say but i don't. >> you just have to say we're going to have a pretty decent weekend forecast. >> it's not going to go down the drain or anything like that. >> there you go. >> we didn't have to work too hard to find that one. it isn't going to be all that bad but it is going to be a lot warmer. we will have this return of humidity which we haven't had for a little while. we had a nice break from it around here but it's going to come back out of saturday and sunday, the worst humidity day is going to be sunday. it looks like that humidity will linger into monday too. not that you won't feel it tomorrow. it's going to be a little bit sticky out there but it definitely looks like sunday is going to be the more humid of the two. not bad today, though. 86 degrees. lots of sunshine. nice blue sky. relative humidity stayed in check so that was nice and comfortable. dulles was 84. bwi marshall was only up to 83 degrees. if you were lucky enough to be close to the bay, it was even cooler than that where temperatures stayed in the 70s most all day today. 89 tomorrow for a high. i think some of you will crack 90 degrees. it's certainly going to feel warmer than 90 about the humid -- with the humidity out there. it will be up to 90 on sunday. a chance of scattered thunderstorms late day and into the evening both days. it doesn't look like we're going to have widespread strong or severe thunderstorms. it just looks like some garden variety typical summer type thunderstorms late in the day. i should say too where we get some of those thunderstorms, there's going to be potential for some heavy rain. 89 for a high tomorrow. just about the same on sunday. 90 degrees there. 90 on monday. but notice for tuesday and wednesday of next week, we do begin to get a little break from the heat as some cooler air is coming down. high pressure is shifting off shore. we're still protected by the high pressure tonight. but as it scoots a little bit farther to the east, we begin to get return flow so it reaches down and pulls the humidity out of the southeast so that's coming in. big thunderstorms out here in the plains tonight. one complex moved out this morning. another one is building late this afternoon and this evening. very, very unsented weather is coming out of that area and humidity well to the south of us. and that's what's going to come rolling in here over the next 24 to 36 hours. a few clouds overnight tonight. fairly mild, though. temperatures will stay in the upper 60s to right around 70 degrees. a little bit more humid tomorrow. you'll definitely feel it and we have the chance for the late day and evening thunderstorms. high temperatures upper 80s and the lower 90s. and once this warm front comes through tomorrow night or late tomorrow night into tomorrow night, that's when i really think we're going to begin to get a lot of the humidity surging into the area. the higher dew points, it will feel much more muggy on sunday. again scattered thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening both days, even into monday, too. and we'll be waiting on that relief next week. we get a little bit
