STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. The borough’s coronavirus (COVID-19) hospitalization total fell sharply once more, although four more disease-related deaths were recorded here.
At the same time, less than 70 new confirmed coronavirus cases were added to Staten Island’s tally, city Health Department data shows.
As of Wednesday afternoon, 64 coronavirus in-patients were being treated in the borough’s two hospital systems. That number was down eight from Tuesday’s tally of 72.

It is May 6, and – well over a year into a global pandemic that has impacted every member of the Staten Island community – it is time to pause for National Nurses Day 2021, part of this year’s nurse appreciation week.
It is difficult to send our thoughts back to last spring, when New York City was the epicenter of an emerging global pandemic, PPE was in short supply, the hospital beds were full, and morgues were working overtime to manage those who did not survive.
Police reveal new details in weekend West Brighton shooting that injured 28-year-old man

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. A shooting that took place on a commercial strip in West Brighton Sunday night left a 28-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds to his legs and chest, police said.
The shooting happened at 8:22 p.m. near the intersection of Henderson and Campbell avenues, said an NYPD spokesman.
The victim suffered numerous gunshot wounds to his legs and a graze wound to his chest, police said Monday. He was transferred to Richmond University Medical Center in West Brighton in stable condition.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. Coronavirus (COVID-19) hospitalizations in the borough plunged yet again on Tuesday to a new low this year, after a brief one-day upswing.
At the same time, two more residents have succumbed to the disease, while 70 new confirmed coronavirus cases were added to Staten Island’s tally, city Health Department data shows.
As of Tuesday afternoon, 72 coronavirus in-patients were being treated in the borough’s two hospital systems. That number was down 13 from Monday’s tally of 85.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. At 2%, Staten Island has the highest seven-day average of positive coronavirus (COVID-19) cases across the five boroughs, just above Brooklyn’s 1.98% positivity rate.
However, the borough’s 2% positivity rate on Monday is lower than Sunday’s 2.05% and Saturday’s 2.10%, according to state data. Citywide the seven-day average of positive test results is 1.65% and 1.76% statewide.
