THUNDER BAY - The extension of the lockdown in Northern Ontario for at least another two weeks will be difficult for the business community, but city officials and business leaders say from a health perspective, it is necessary.
The provincial government announced on Thursday that seven northern health units will remain under lockdown until at least Jan. 23. Schools will return to in-person learning on Jan. 11 in northern school boards.
Five new COVID-19 cases reported
Active case numbers have fallen to 49, the second lowest figure since mid-November.

THUNDER BAY – Five new cases of COVID-19 were announced on Friday by the Thunder Bay District Health Unit.
However, the number of known active cases in the area has dropped to 49, five fewer than was announced on Thursday.
The total number of COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began grew to 635, 50 of those cases occurring in 2021.
One of the cases is related to close contact, while another is attributed to travel outside of Northwestern Ontario. Two are pending, while one is from Southbridge Roseview nursing home, where an outbreak that began in November has led to the deaths of 20 residents.
