A temporary scheme to replace the former Cross-Border Directive was described as a ‘sticky plaster’ at the Oireathas Brexit Committee yesterday, by Mayo Senator Lisa Chambers.
The scheme provides reimbursement of private healthcare for patients travelling to the north to undergo outpatient surgeries, due to long waiting list across the region.
Senator Chambers says that there are plans to extend the 12-month continuation of the directive, in the form of the new Northern Ireland Planned Healthcare Scheme, and put it on a statutory footing.

A Co Galway company has announced the creation of 70 new jobs over the next 6 months.
Xerotech, a battery manufacturer and integrator based in Claregalway, has announced a number of developments to provide the additional capacity required for its planned business growth over the coming years.
This includes the acquisition of an additional three units in the Claregalway Business Park, next to their current design centre.
Xerotech is also in the final stages of selecting a site in Galway for its European Gigafactory Complex, which is due to come online in 2024, and will increase the company s manufacturing capacity by 20-fold.
