The Jefferson County Coroner s Office has confirmed a three-year-old child died at Norton Children s Hospital Dec. 28 after suffering third degree burns at a Louisville hotel in November. Jeffersontown Police Chief Rick Sanders said West Virginia native Keith Kennedy-McLeod, his girlfriend and her three-year-old child were staying at an Extended Stay on Bunsen Way. When the girlfriend left the residence, Sanders said Kennedy-McLeod put the child into a bathtub of scalding water. The child was taken to the hospital with third degree burns. During examination, doctors discovered the child also had severe head trauma that required surgery and fingernail cuts consistent with shaken baby syndrome.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the inmate as Stephen Tanzel Reid. He was 45 and lived in Birmingham. Reid was booked into the county lockup on Dec. 29 on three counts of arson and possession of burglary tools. Authorities said he was suspected of setting fire to a couple of churches and commercial buildings in Birmingham. Sheriff’s Sgt. Joni Money said deputies were performing their standard counts during shift change at the downtown lockup about 8:15 p.m. Monday when they realized one of the inmates had not exited his cell for the count. Deputies went to check on the inmate and found him hanging in his cell.

Joni Money said shortly after 2 a.m. on Friday, January 1, 2021 Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputies were called to the 1000 Block of Eastern Valley Road to investigate reports that a vehicle had slid off the roadway and struck a home. “Once on the scene, Deputies found a 26-year-old black male inside the vehicle,” Money said. “Once he was removed from the vehicle, it was determined that he was deceased. No one in the home was injured in the incident.”

The fire happened about 11 p.m. Monday in the 1600 block of Trailer Lane in Irondale. Authorities said Moreno was found outside of a mobile home and taken to UAB Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:34 p.m. Thursday. The cause, origin and circumstances surrounding the fire are under investigation by the Irondale Fire Department and the Irondale Police Department. City workers cleaning up the park across the street from City Hall about 8 a.m. found a man unresponsive on the ground near the south side of the park. The location was close to the 700 block of 20th Street North. Officer Truman Fitzgerald said Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service responded to the scene and pronounced the victim dead. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office also responded, and Fitzgerald said evidence suggests the man was killed. The cause of death is pending an autopsy.
