Chauvin verdict a start but not enough, say some Evansville Black residents
EVANSVILLE, Ind. Twice last summer, hundreds of protesters marched through Downtown streets under the watchful eye of Evansville Police officers in riot gear and members of the National Guard to demand racial justice and police reform. It was part of a national upswell following the police murder of a Black man named George Floyd in Minneapolis.
The killings of unarmed Black men, women and children have popped up in national headlines for years now, but last year felt different. Smaller protests continued throughout the summer. Even local law enforcement took a moment of silence to remember Floyd, and the mayor proposed a change to the civilian committee charged with oversight of the Evansville Police Department.
