SHIVA KUMAR as its newest member of the board of advisors. Kumar previously served as chief strategy officer and head of business development for Watson Health at IBM from 2015-2020, worked for the consulting firm McKinsey & Co., and was an associate professor at Yale University’s Physics Department. As senior executive at IBM since 2003, he has pioneered analytics use to improve its revenue and profit performance, and co-founded and led teams at IBM Research to develop the capabilities of IBM Watson Health.

HOLYOKE Area colleges and universities in Hampshire County and Holyoke are in line to receive millions of dollars in emergency funding from the American Rescue Plan, the $1.9 trillion economic stimulus bill signed into law in early March.
Holyoke Community College will receive $13.3 million in funding, while Mount Holyoke was allocated $3.9 million to address the financial impacts of COVID-19 on students and institutions. U.S. Rep. Richard Neal announced the funding as part of a total of almost $90 million in assistance to 13 western Massachusetts colleges and universities in the 1st Congressional District on Monday.

Springfield Technical Community College has opened registration for its free STEM Starter Academy’s Summer Bridge program, which will allow incoming fall 2021 students registered in a STEM major to earn college credits.
The program runs July 5 through Aug. 12 and is for incoming students pursuing a science, technology, engineering or math major. Those who are accepted into the program can earn free college credits and a $500 stipend upon participation and completion.
The deadline to apply is June 11. Applicants must be a Massachusetts high school graduate in the class of 2019, 2020 or 2021; a Massachusetts resident; an incoming STEM major student registered for fall 2021 classes; have a GPA of 2.7 or above; and submit a STEM Starter Academy application with a transcript.

SPRINGFIELD Springfield Technical Community College will be closed through Sunday, May 9, after four employees tested positive for COVID-19.
The campus was closed “out of an abundance of caution,” according to an email sent to students and staff Thursday night from Kathryn C. Senie, assistant vice president of human resources for the college.
Each of the employees reported testing positive over a 10-day span.
“The college is collaborating closely with the local Department of Public Health. All individuals who had potential close contact with the confirmed cases have been notified, directed to quarantine, and encouraged to contact their primary health care provider,” Senie said. “Local public health officials will oversee the formal contact tracing process.”
