Holyoke Community College will receive $13.3 million in funding, while Mount Holyoke was allocated $3.9 million to address the financial impacts of COVID-19 on students and institutions. U.S. Rep. Richard Neal announced the funding as part of a total of almost $90 million in assistance to 13 western Massachusetts colleges and universities in the 1st Congressional District on Monday.

The program runs July 5 through Aug. 12 and is for incoming students pursuing a science, technology, engineering or math major. Those who are accepted into the program can earn free college credits and a $500 stipend upon participation and completion. The deadline to apply is June 11. Applicants must be a Massachusetts high school graduate in the class of 2019, 2020 or 2021; a Massachusetts resident; an incoming STEM major student registered for fall 2021 classes; have a GPA of 2.7 or above; and submit a STEM Starter Academy application with a transcript.

The campus was closed “out of an abundance of caution,” according to an email sent to students and staff Thursday night from Kathryn C. Senie, assistant vice president of human resources for the college. Each of the employees reported testing positive over a 10-day span. “The college is collaborating closely with the local Department of Public Health. All individuals who had potential close contact with the confirmed cases have been notified, directed to quarantine, and encouraged to contact their primary health care provider,” Senie said. “Local public health officials will oversee the formal contact tracing process.”
