The construction and maintenance of a nearby drainage system is under review as part of the investigation into the Stonehaven rail tragedy which killed three people in August 2020. As part of its Interim Report into the derailment, the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) has revealed that it is looking at the construction and maintenance of a drainage system constructed by Carillion in 2012 with design input from Arup & Partners Scotland. The Interim Report adds that the derailment occurred after the train collided “with stones washed out onto the track from the gravel-filled crest drain and from the adjacent ground”. The RAIB will also look at the maintenance of the drain, with no record of inspections carried out in the eight years between its construction and the derailment.
