The U.N. statistics show that the war has forced 2.7 million Afghans to flee the country and another 4 million to be displaced within the country. Afghanistan has a total population of 36 million. On the other side of the conflict, 2,442 U.S. troops have been killed and 20,666 wounded, according to U.S. Defense Department. It's estimated that over 3,800 U.S. private security contractors and 1,144 personnel from the NATO coalition that trained Afghan forces died because of the war.
