Death in the desert: A son dies, a father is deported and a Texas sheriff fights to stop smugglers

Culberson County Sheriff Oscar Carrillo stands by the spot where the body of 15-year-old boy Christian was found on Thursday, June 24, 2021. Carrillo says they received a distress call from a rancher using a satellite phone on June 21st. The rancher said he had found two migrants in the desert of Texas on Chispa Road in Jeff Davis County. Raul, 35, and his son Christian, 15, both from Ecuador, were crossing the border from Mexico to the U.S. when they got lost after their smuggler abandoned them. Upon deputies' arrival to the scene, Raul was showing signs of severe dehydration, but his son Christian was already deceased. (Lola Gomez/The Dallas Morning News/TNS)
