Our top story. This morning is that 1100 people and i believe to have been killed on both sides of the Israeli Palestinian conflict. Well, the fighting which israels officially declared to be a war, started with a massive air and land assault by hamas from the gaza strip into southern israel on saturday. It has been a very, very disturbing and busy weekend. And since then, israel has conducted a heavy bombardment of gaza in retaliation. But hamas, which retaliation. But hamas, which controls the gaza strip, has continued to fire more rockets overnight. Meanwhile, many israeli families continue their for search missing loved ones, feared kidnapped by armed palestinians who broke the security cordon and entered israeli communities. And these are these are pictures which are very, very disturbing on the front of the papers. But people who were at that Music Festival on saturday and then abducted , kidnapped, and then abducted, kidnapped, goodness knows what has happened to them, which adds a particularly sinister aspect to all of this. Well, questions are now being raised over how the renowned Israeli Intelligence services was seemingly caught so off guard. And gb news pip tomson reports on an attack thats become known as israels 9 11. Become known as israels 9 11. Its one of the longest running conflict in the world. But the scale of whats been happening is unprecedented. And happening is unprecedented. And it was a religious holiday. Israeli families were relaxing or praying. No one saw this coming, not even , it seems, coming, not even, it seems, israels sophisticated Intelligence Services as videos and photos of dead israelis emerged on social media, so too did images of armed men from hamas , taking soldiers and hamas, taking soldiers and civilians into captivity in gaza. Israel is at war. The response from its Prime Minister. Graham what happened today has never been seen in israel. And i will make sure that it does not happen again. The entire government is behind this decision. The idf will immediately use all its strength to hamass capabilities to destroy hamass capabilities. We will destroy them and we will take mighty vengeance for this black that they have this black day that they have forced the state of israel forced on the state of israel and citizens. And its citizens. Within hours, airstrikes on gaza killing many palestinians. Gaza killing many palestinians. As this footage released by the Israeli Air Force claims to show hamas targets being destroyed. A hamas targets being destroyed. A mosque, blocks of flats being reduced to rubble in seconds as tensions between israelis and palestinians have been rising since the start of the year. But in the west bank, the territory between jerusalem and the jordanian border that israel has occupied since 1967, no one expected hamas that controls gaza to intervene. Israel has gaza to intervene. Israel has not been a priority for the countries that still officially call for peace via a two state solution. Now it is impossible to ignore Barack ObamasAmerican Administration was the last to try and help create a separate palestinian state. Today, the people of israel under attack, orchestrated by a terrorist organisation, hamas is in this moment of tragedy. I in this moment of tragedy. I want to say to them and to the world and to terrorists everywhere, that the United States stands with israel. States stands with israel. I want to express my absolute solidarity for the people of israel. Now is not a solidarity for the people of israel. Now is not a time for equivocation , and i am equivocation, and i am unequivocal. Unequivocal. There is a peace plan to end this century long conflict between palestinians and israelis for control of land. The violence of the last few daysis the violence of the last few days is a deadly reminder of what happens when a push for peace is shelved. For too long. Pip tomson, gb news speaking to gb news Israels Deputy ambassador to the uk , he held ambassador to the uk, he held back tears as he discussed the scenes after the attacks. And scenes after the attacks. And she has blood all over her body , grabbing her by her hair and the terrorist shoved her into a car and her eyes petrified , my car and her eyes petrified, my eyes thinking what theyre going to do to me , what kind of people to do to me, what kind of people commit these atrocities to other people , to children , these lets people, to children, these lets go to robert foulkes. Robert is the defence editor of the Evening Standard on all of the Evening Standard on all of this. And robert , i know you of this. And robert, i know you know this situation. So many know this situation. So many commentators obviously well frequented with it and journalists, but not the general pubucin journalists, but not the general public in the uk. They havent got a clue who the good guys are and who the bad guys are. With all of this and this push by the palestinians over the weekend, why now . Why the timing of this . Because it was a brilliant piece of deception. Its one of piece of deception. Its one of the most extraordinary pieces of deception carried out in the very difficult history of israel as an independent state since 1947. For 48, the last really bad breach of or lapse of Israeli Intelligence was exactly 50 years ago over this festival of yom kippur, where our syrian and Egyptian Forces attacked. This time, it was much closer to home. The palestinians, it now appears , had prepared this appears, had prepared this attack. Bring valiantly. They had given no intelligence leaks. This is the most important thing that this was coming. And thing that this was coming. And there are various revelations, particularly by the Reuters Agency, that have done an in depth investigation on that. This was trained for and prepared for, for up to a year. And the israelis hadnt a clue that it was going to happen. It was for prepared even to the extent that they built up an artificial israeli settlement inside gaza to train their commandos in how to assault this. Yet none of this was seen. And there was a full phase operation in which civilians were the targets. They were targets for killing and of course, for kidnapping. And thats the big problem for israel now, can go on attack , israel now, can go on attack, but it doesnt want to endanger the lives of this 100 or so or possibly even more hostages now dispersed throughout densely populated gaza , which youre populated gaza, which youre looking at now right. And that is the ace up the sleeve, which i suppose the palestinians have. And why why palestinians have. And why why risk poking the bear . I mean, risk poking the bear . I mean, israel would be a much superior force and can strike back at will here with air power, for instance , the American Fleet. Instance, the American Fleet. The mediterranean American Fleet is now off the coast of gaza. So so its an unwinnable situation for the palestinians militarily, surely. Its something that they surely. Its something that they can do in the coordinates of new warfare, new old warfare, because theres also the political subversion lviv diplomatic streak. Diplomatic streak. Sorry to go back to 1973 again, 1973 led to one of the biggest oil crises and crises in the western economy that theyd seen since world war ii. What happens next . It is quite clear that hamas is saying to its allies and the arab world seems quite divided on this. Youve got to come and help the 2. 3 million arabs in gaza living in very difficult situations. But its big ally this time , which its big ally this time, which obviously wasnt around in 1973 because it was an entirely different regime. Is iran when we look at this, its the main piece that ive written overnight for the standard. It overnight for the standard. It has moved iran to absolutely centre stage. It is the crucial centre stage. It is the crucial suppuer centre stage. It is the crucial supplier and agitator both in the ukraine conflict and in this conflict because of a lot of the weaponry and possibly the know how came from iran for this one. And it is on a scale in guerrilla warfare by the palestinians that hasnt been seen before. Seen before. Robert, just finally , what robert, just finally, what happens next . We will see a lot more bombard payment by israelis i there will be rockets fired out as long as they have them. They have quite a deep supply. They have quite a deep supply. And the big question is if when and how the Israeli Ground forces go in. And by doing that, by going into the gaza strip, do they automatically endanger the lives of those hostages, by the way , the hostages werent an way, the hostages werent an incidental they were the main aim it now seems, of the battle plan of the palestinians that theyve been working so very cleverly. And part of it, by the way, was to knock out all the local intelligence since the electronic means by by the israelis. They locked and they israelis. They locked and they knocked out the Main Communications centres of the southern command, just opposite the gaza strip of the Israeli Defence force. Robert, really appreciate your take on things. Well talk again. Robert fox is the defence again. Robert fox is the defence editor of the Evening Standard. Lets take another look, if we can, at that live image that was coming in to us this morning from the gaza strip. We were seeing of smoke seeing pictures of smoke billowing from the billowing up there from the latest its latest israeli strikes and its worth just reflecting really that be speaking to that we will be speaking to people within jerusalem and people from within jerusalem and indeed from inside palestine throughout the course of the morning. Course, the morning. And of course, the latest is very much latest situation is very much evolving. 100 hostages still evolving. 100 hostages still being held inside gaza by hamas, different locations , as were different locations, as were being told. And of course, hugely distressing for the families and loved ones of everyone involved there as i say, we keep a close eye on that developing picture for you throughout the course of the morning. Morning. Shani, look, who is 23 years of age, had been attending an outdoor Music Festival near kibbutz urim when the terrorists stormed the area. Stormed the area. Well, the time is 612. Youre watching breakfast on gb news with eamonn and isabel. Lets ang with eamonn and isabel. Lets bring you up to date with the latest developments in israel and gaza. Prime minister has expressed his solidarity with israel. He said that terrorism will not prevail. He promised the uk will help israel in the wake of the attack. So far, more than a thousand palestinians and israelis have been killed as the escalation continues. Escalation continues. Well, number 10 has projected the israeli flag onto downing street to show support for the people of israel. There are similar displays of solidarity across the world, including keith berlin and in new york. The government is working to establish the whereabouts of two british citizens who have been reported missing. Shortly after hamas raided the musical festival at the weekend and israeli communities near gaza , israeli communities near gaza, its been confirmed that another briton , 20 year old nathaniel briton, 20 year old Nathaniel Young , has been killed. He was young, has been killed. He was serving with the Israeli Defence force and the london mayor, sadiq khan says that extra Police Patrols are being carried out to reassure jewish londoners. It comes after social media videos circulated of people in the centre of the capital appearing to celebrate hamass attack on israel and the metropolitan police says it has increased patrols across the capital. Speaking to gb news, the transport secretary mark harper also condemned what is going on. Matters , of course, matters, of course, a proscribed terrorist organisation in the United Kingdom. So anybody expressing support for it is committing an offence. And i would hope that offence. And i would hope that the metropolitan police will investigate carefully any reports of anybody doing so and well take all the necessary steps aftennards as. Steps aftennards as. Now to other news this morning and a cautiously confident keir starmer has been speaking at the Labour Party Conference saying that his party are bang on schedule to win the next general election. Next general election. Yesterday, deputy leader Angela Rayner said that labour will act as a stark contrast to the conservatives as never been so unified, so focussed around one aim to give britain its future back. But the tories also have one singular focus focus to desperately cling on to power. Desperately cling on to power. Thats why the tories levelling up project was dead on arrival. Up project was dead on arrival. You cannot level up from the top down. The tories only know how to centralise power and hold wealth where it benefits them. Wealth where it benefits them. Well , what can we expect well, what can we expect today . Our gb news deputy Political Editor tom hannood is in liverpool and can bring us up to date. Good morning to you, tom. Look, obviously wild events probably overshadowing for conference labour a little bit today and well talk about that in a second. Ed, but who are we going to hear from today and what are the latest lines coming out of the conference . Well, the set piece, the set piece speech will take place at midday its the shadow midday today. Its the shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves, turn to take to the stage where shes to take to the stage where shes to going or at least is expected to going or at least is expected to announce a pretty sizeable package of plans and reform to do with energy infrastructure. Do with energy infrastructure. Now, it all sounds a bit technical and perhaps a little bit dull, but it is quite important. It seems that the labour party is going to strip out the need for the same sort of Environmental Impact assessment that that that is mandatory now for green infrastructure. So its a way of infrastructure. So its a way of speeding up, getting that sort of Green Energy Infrastructure going, getting spades in the ground, getting stuff built thats a big, big theme of this labour conference this week. Labour conference this week. Its about how can we get rid of the red tape to get stuff built in britain . In some ways its interesting. Its what interesting. Its what economists might call a supply side reform policy. Thats the sort of stuff that liz truss was wanting to do last year. How do you get the economy growing faster . And its certainly what Rachel Reeves will be talking about today. Its interesting to look at those parallels. Of course, in a time when budgets are stretched, when were not expecting the labour party to be able to spend much more money, although there are some reports that they might be looking to do a little bit more borrowing. Its likely, however, that the central growth agenda of the labour party will be needed to be done without tax and spend measures. But with regulatory reform. Um, okay. Reform. Um, okay. Interesting. And i touched on it before tom, but the issue of whats happening with israel and palestine is a sensitive one for the labour party. Not that long since they were in special measures for being instituted, anti semitic sir keir starmer has worked really hard to root out this problem. And yet here you in liverpool and out you are up in liverpool and out on a fringe event, not part of the official labour party organisations. But hamas was being and jeremy being applauded and Jeremy Corbyn who of flirted corbyn also who sort of flirted with supporting hamas in the past, attending those conferences and raising a few eyebrows. Eyebrows. Certainly now its important to stress that, of course Jeremy Corbyn is not currently a labour party mp. He has been suspended from the party, but it is true to say of course he was leading this party for quite some time. Sir keir starmer sat up on stage with him as one of his key shadow cabinet members, and i remember a couple of years ago at this Party Conference under a different leadership when the floor of the plenary hall was stormed by palestinian flags. And it really was quite a different atmosphere. I have to diff
