Even before this, though, what was once the obscure choice of a few families has grown in popularity over the past decade. In 2019, the Children's Commissioner for England estimated that around 60,000 children were homeschooled. A persistent concern over homeschooling as a result of COVID-19 has been that it is causing new inequalities in children's education . The closure of schools means children's learning has relied increasingly on their family's social and domestic circumstances. The pandemic has shown that the poorest families in the UK do not have access to the resources necessary to educate children at home.
