This wasn’t the plan. This wasn’t his dream. Since Ben Skowronek was a boy in Fort Wayne, he watched the NFL Scouting Combine and fantasized about running the 40-yard dash, wowing scouts and draft analysts across the country. He often pictured it: On the green turf of Lucas Oil Stadium, in front of millions of fans watching on TV -- not to mention 32 potential employers -- he was going to show everyone, once and for all, how fast he is. You see, all his life, and Skowronek isn’t exactly sure why, skeptics questioned whether he could run. Maybe it’s the height? A lanky 6-3 receiver, the 220-pound Northwestern and Notre Dame product sometimes doesn’t look like he’s covering as much ground as he actually is.
