Reporter he is, marcus, because the Health Experts are saying the president s original deadline to have everyone out and about by easter will not work. As they often have put it, flatten the curve. In other words the numbers theyre seeing, the projections theyre seeing, suggest that we have not seen the worst of this yet. President trump is abandoning his plan to get the economy going again by easter and extending guidance to practice social distancing until april 30th. The better you do, the faster this whole nightmare will end. Reporter the u. S. Death toll from the coronavirus doubled in two days. The latest projections show millions will be infected and up to 200,000 could die. The death rate isnt expected to peak for two more weeks. We just cant move on it until the health and safety criteria are satisfied. Reporter more than half the cases are coming from new york, new jersey, and connecticut, so the cdc issued a 14day travel advisory asks residents in those states to stay home. This is not a lockdown, it is a travel advisory. Reporter President Trump is in a battle with some governors accusing states of hoarding supplies. They are holding ventilators, they dont want to let them up. Reporter while states accuse him of playing politics, delivering masks and respirators more slowly to states run by democrats. This is not something we should be fighting each other on. Reporter the federal government promises help will come quickly since Congress Approved 2 trillion to fight the virus. Its money desperately needed with jobless claims soaring and the economy in standstill. So heres a little bit of good news, just a little bit, especially for people who may not be working right now. A couple of the countrys biggest insurance companies, Health Insurance companies, cigna and humana say their patients will not pay one dime for treatment. No coinsurance, no copays, no bills. Theyre going to cover it all. The president is urging other companies to make sure people dont have to pay a copay if they have to go in for treatment for this virus. The latest data we have from the Public Health department and the state. You can see the number of daily cases statewide spiked last week at just over 800. Again, those are 800 cases per day. Now were just under 700 daily cases. So just before the number of daily cases spikes again or the start of a downward trend. Stanford epidemiologists who we spoke with last week told me we might be seeing a touch of flattening the curve but we need more data points. Thats the issue in california, we havent been testing as much. Right now statewide there are about 5,600 confirmed cases of covid19, 119 deaths. Now be prepared to continue to stay inside and for nonessential businesses to stay closed. Sources tell nbc bay area news all nine bay area counties plan to extend the order until may 1st to help slow the spread of the coronavirus. Yesterday President Trump echoed the need to extend nationwide social distancing guidelines. The better you do the faster this whole nightmare will end. Reducing the inmate population to stop the spread in the jails. The chronicle reporting a District Attorney has cut the number of inmates by 25 since the start of the month. The courts have granted probation for many lowlevel criminals and those who have served most of their sentences. Happening now visiting California State Parks by car just got even harder. The state has now shut down vehicle access to all 280 sites across the state. Previously all parking lots were off limits along with some state parks and beaches. The latest response comes after another surge that they saw in visits over the weekend. This week on friday well get the number of new jobs created as we wrap up the month of march. That number is down near zero. As bob and tracie have been reporting President Trump announced in the press conference on sunday he would extend the federal guidelines until april 30th instead of opening up the economy earlier. A reminder as many of you debate this online with the exception of federal jobs the president cant order the economy to reopen especially if state governors are ordering people to stay home. Its our understanding Governor Newsom will extend the orders to april 1st, a day after the president s guidelines are scheduled to end. The rain for today will only be in the north bay. The rest of us will have a chance to dry out today. And so were looking at a mix of sun and clouds and a mild start this morning, but as we get a live look outside at walnut creek were going to see those clouds remaining with us but also later on today the sun peeking out from behind those clouds. There is another storm system approaching and thats whats going to bring the rain to the north bay. You can see the showers approaching far northern california. As it moves into the north bay a lot of the rain will fall apart. Were looking at as it approaches, it moves in, and the rain kind of dissipates before it moves south of the golden gate bridge. The whole week, the rest of the week, is all dry. Then well see a new storm approaching between saturday and sunday and looks to bring us a little bit more rain but today once again rainfall totals will only be at about a quarter inch of rain for ukiah, santa rosa, barely measuring anything. For the sierra, no snow for most of this week but then this weekend were looking at a decent storm coming in that could bring up to a foot to a foot and a half of some snow. Our temperatures are going to be much warmer over the next couple of days, up to about 65 degrees for the inland areas. 70 on thursday and this weekend as the scattered showers arrive our temperatures come down a little bit and for San Francisco some 60s throughout the week with a lot of sunshine especially starting tomorrow.
