Last night President Trump said any deal was off but then backtracked just a few hours later. Our washington dc correspondent Trevor Shirley is live for us now with details on where things stand and also has new information on the president s health, good afternoon hey good evening, thanks for having me so with this point we know the president spent at least part of his day in the oval office, white house chief of staff mark meadows said they took extra precautions to make sure that environment was as safe as possible given the fact that the president is still being treated for covid19 but there is a lot of confusion that remains between the white house and capitol hill as to where things stand exactly with these ongoing covid relief talks. President trump returned to the oval office this afternoon with the white house says he was briefed on stimulus talks and hurricane delta. Earlier doctors released an update on his health they say feels grade remains fever free and has been symptomfree for more than 24 hours. Were pleased his progress and white house chief of staff mark meadows says the president continues to work weve got a number safety protocols with full mask goggles and the for any a direct interaction with the president , but the focus of the president s health took a back seat when he announced tuesday night a full stop on covid19 relief negotiations until after the election. Then backtracked several hours later after the stock market took a dive obviously were looking the potential for standalone bills the president tweeted that those could include direct timulus checks to taxpayers and money for the nations airlines speaker of the house nancy pelosi said a deal will happen we will have the sooners down and he wont win the election in the meantime President Trump says he intends to go ahead with the next president ial debate. Although joe biden says that should be up to the doctors. I think the show had covid we should have a debate the debate is scheduled for thursday october 15th. So we also dont know whether or not theres even any appetite over on capitol hill for some kind of a compromise or a negotiation that would allow for the passage of any of these standalone bills that the president talked about the president though has made clear his top priority. At least for the Senate Remains getting the confirmation through of Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court back to you. Thank you so much trevor and now to a big story. Good afternoon justine that thats new record a Million People registered to vote here in Santa Clara County and as you said the election still a few weeks away and that is easily a new record lets go inside the Registrars Office here for a closer look. And in my 25 years of working at the register voters. I have never had a line outside the door at 08 00am when we open. At a News Conference registrar of voters shannon bush and wednesday haley news of a record 1 million registered voters for the upcoming november 3rd election is a milestone moment for Santa Clara County of course you know we watch our voter rolls fluctuate up and down. But it was really exciting when we saw that the million mark was on the horizon and we realized that we were actually going to be able to hit that target. 1 million voters reflects 83 of the total 1 million 204 thousand 687 eligible voters in the county. Thats up from 67 for the 2016 general election. The sharp increase is attributed to registration through the department of Motor Vehicles and high interest in the president ial election. Among those registering to vote for the first time is 18 yearold student on of are so soft and the fact that we have a million voters it gives us a more accurate representation. Of our needs and our our wants and the things that affect us on a daily basis. And there are still another 200,000 or so people could still registered to vote the deadline is october 19th, but even if people miss that. They can still come down here in person to the Registrars Office and fill out an affidavit and get what they call a conditional Voter Registration and that led them to getting a provisional ballot they could go ahead and vote and then once the information on that affidavit is a corroborated then their vote will be counted. The story here today a million registered voters here in Santa Clara County just team back to you. We go now to our wildfire coverage, the glass fire is still burning in the north bay and just scorched more than 67,000 acres. It is 58 contained more than 600 homes have been destroyed and more than 20,000 structures still remain threatened. And the glass fire is leaving dozens of homes wineries and Historic Sites damaged or complete loss in napa county a historic retreat site suffered some tremendous damage and kron fours Maureen Kelly shows us now whats left behind. Its a piece of california history that is now mostly in ruins, this is one of 17 buildings at the White Sulphur springs resort thats been burned down to its foundation. All thats left is charred wood twisted metal. Some such left standing. Now im told often institute whove been running retreats here for the past 25 years that this is californias. Oldest resort clark, gable has stayed here mark twain has stayed here it was established in 1852. Now there were a few buildings that that did survive this is one the in right here. One of 3 of 20 that was on touched by the fires. But obviously this is a huge loss to the people who have been. Working they say they will be coming back. Sadly they had just been cleared by the county to begin holding retreats again obviously being closed sense. March because of coronavirus now they will be looking for a new place to hold their retreats and they say you know they were insured and they have reserves and they do plan to bounce back. But a lot of this now gone. A piece of california passed. Mostly wiped off the map. Reporting from san only 9 Maureen Kelly kron 4 news. Lets talk now about our 4 zone forecast as we take a quick live look over downtown San Francisco, a mix of smoke and fog covering the city right now and theres a slight chance of rain coming our way this weekend meteorologist strom is here now with those details good afternoon america. Just seen good afternoon. Yes, were definitely seeing a little bit of haze around the bay area you can see it here this hour live camera overlooking the north bay, its in tehran on a clear day we can normally see and the Golden Gate Bridge in the background cant make it out today though, but yes were seeing a lot of fog. The marine layer starting to deepen and thats bringing us so some cooler conditions around the bay area. Winds have also died down versus what weve seen over the last week or so and that red flag warning was long expired over the weekend. So that is some good news for firefighters just a breezy conditions though especially across the north bay, the air quality still not great those still not where we want it to be that spare the air alert has been extended into tomorrow and were still going to be seeing those moderate support levels out there but that cooling trend definitely going to help matters and it could also possibly bring us some rainfall in the forecast details coming up a little bit later just tv. Thanks so much and here is what else is coming up on kron 4 news at 3 oclock today people in one east bay city say a lot of people do not wear masks when theyre out in public. What the Police Department is now doing about it. Plus the impact of wildfire smoke could have on a billion dollar industry here in california and were not talking about the grapes. And after the break the one and only Vice President ial debate kicks off in just a few hours so happening tonight, california senator Kamala Harris will face off against Vice President mike pence in the one and only Vice President ial debate. The event is happening at the university of utah in Salt Lake City and reporter Nikki Laurenzo is there for us now she has a preview of tonights event good afternoon nikki. Good afternoon to you just seeing yeah very highly anticipated event here tonight has really been that way. Joe biden taps Kamala Harris to be his running mate and i think we can expect fire discussion back and forth between these candidates tonight and really the debating started before the candidates even taking the stage here tonight it was over safety protocol, the Biden Harris Campaign they want to some extra measures put in place with all of the positive coronavirus test coming out of the white house the pence can kind of push back a little bit but overnight last night they did agree. So tonight viewers will be seeing the plexiglass going up between the 2 candidates and they will be seated. 12 feet apart now in terms of the atmosphere here in salt lake. If you walk around the city. You really with no a Vice President ial debate was happening here lets you came up to the campus here at the university of utah to the campus is closed all that you see here or Law Enforcement and staff running around doing the finishing touches here. But we did manage to come. After up with a couple of voters to get their perspective on what they want to see tonight. The road to the november election runs through Salt Lake City tonight, the university of utah the site of the one and only Vice President ial debate between the current Vp Mike Pence and california senator Kamala Harris and even though its a scaled back event. Trained as a boost for the economy. There is excitement for both the debate and the election i think people in my generation, my age group are like really riled up right now and like i think the best way to express yourself is by voting like thats how were going to get things done. But tonight, its the candidate who will be expressing themselves and some are hoping it wont near the meeting between President Trump and former Vice President joe biden would want to see a more formal and my respectful debate which i think will be possible and when it comes to what voters want to hear from both henson harris. Well it depends on who you ask, but i want to hear from parents is to hold the line. This keep doing keep on keepin on. And what id like to hear from kamala is what she actually believes and his views flipflopping one thing hes like son. Biden is the worst person on the planet. Now as you say is the greatest thing since you know raise a red i dont know how important it is to see. President themselves having like different ideals as much as they are supporting their candidate. To me its more important to see that like theyre going to be upholding their candidate theyre going to be theyre going to be respectful one another and that theyre somebody we can trust if something ever happens to the regional candidate. And the last part of that comment. There is key expect a readiness to come up tonight considering the president of the United States was diagnosed with covid19 is being treated for right now as well as members of his staff and also lawmakers in washington. The senator from the state that im in right now senator mike lee also tested positive for covid19 one more note though we do know both of the candidates were tested for the virus ahead of tonights debate. Both mike pece and Kamala Harris have tested negative. Live in Salt Lake City at the site of the Vice President ial debate. Im Nikki Laurenzo. Thank you mickey, there is so much to watch tonight. Now low switch gears and talk about our Weather Forecast as we take a live look outside. Here at the Golden Gate Bridge is starting to feel more like fall outside and our meteorologist Rebecca Strom, us here with a look at the cooler temperatures and also the chance of rain coming our way by the end of the week good afternoon rebecca afternoon just see me at the senate rain can you believe it we might see some of it. As though we are tracking a storm system headed our direction but right now, yes, outside were seeing a little bit of hazy skies around the bay area that spare the air alert in effect through tomorrow, but were seeing a lot of fog and cloud cover as well as the marine layer continues to deepen over the next couple of days, its going to bring us cooler conditions like where were seeing right now outside for the afternoon but coming out of the Pacific Northwest we are tracking a storm system of the could be giving us some rain drops across the bay area. Late this week into this weekend so keep that in mind especially across the north they
