Letters to the Editor, Friday, March 26 Hendersonville Times-News GOP trying to restrict voting To the Editor: Republicans opposing Democrats is no surprise. What is surprising and very troubling is that Republicans are now opposing democracy itself. The most overt example of their opposition to democracy was the efforts by the former president to convince Republican state officials to overturn the will of the voters, and the attempted insurrection by rioters incited by the former president at the Capitol on Jan. 6. Having failed to win the last election, Republican legislators in several states have filed more than 250 bills designed to restrict voters they don't like from being able to cast ballots. Similar to the previous attempts at voter suppression by the North Carolina legislature that were overturned by the court, these newly filed bills have almost no relationship to making voting more secure, but target the disenfranchisement of minorities with "almost surgical precision." The Republicans have apparently given up on trying to win the battle of ideas and policies. They realize that their only path to regaining power in Washington is to rig future elections.
