Corpus Christi Caller Times Public schools in Texas can continue current practices on face masks and have the authority to set local mask policies, according to the Texas Education Agency. The TEA's statement on Wednesday announcing the updated public health guidance was in response to Gov. Greg Abbott's new executive order lifting the mask mandate in the state. Under the updated guidelines, a school district's current practices can remains unchanged and school boards have the authority to determine a local mask policy. "While it is not possible to eliminate all risk of furthering the spread of COVID-19, the current science suggests there are many steps schools can take to reduce the risks to students, teachers, staff, and 2 their families significantly," the statement said. "This guidance document contains information on four sets of practices that minimize the likelihood of viral spread, including some that are requirements for all schools and others that are recommendations."
